Visual Rhetoric–Daphneblake

The Signs | Friendship & Mental Health | Ad Council

0:00

The initial image on the screen is some sort of small animal, appearing to be a possum on a branch. It seems to be just for decoration. The owners might like to hunt or just like possums. The animal is in a house next to a lamp and you can see half of picture frame with a little boy holding up a mug. Maybe the son of a family? There’s a frame above the animal and a chimney that has assorted vases and statues. So far we have a moderately decorated house with a possible child and family.

0:01

The next shot shows a headline that says, “awkward silence presents” so that may just be the name of the people who produced it or it may contribute to the video and how it’s so awkward. Then a guy appears with his right leg crossed over his left and his hands are folded. He’s wearing buissiness casual clothing with white sneakers and black ankle socks. I think he’s trying to look sophisticated. To me he looks like the kid in the picture all grown up, but that’s just a guess. The guy looks to be on another side of the house because now we see a fish tank, lots of books, a figurine duck, some paintings of nature, and some more animal figurines. For me the animal figurines and nature paintings adds to the hunting idea. There is also a yellow letter “H” on the screen so I’m assuming the guy is about to say something that starts with an h.

0:02

The scene is the same except the yellow words now say, “How to know if you should”. The guy’s mouth is moving as the words appear so I’m assuming he’s saying it.

0:03

The scene is the same except the yellow words now read out,”How to know if you should reach out to a friend.” Maybe a video on friends going hunting together and knowing when to call the other for help.

0:04

Now the scene cuts to a close up of the guy and his facial expression has changed from calm and collected to the face your mother gives you when you had too much candy before dinner. The look is of warning and he looks like he’s about to give advice. His facial expression changed maybe because he is about to say something important, hence the close up of his face.

0:05

The guy continues to talk in the close up with the cautious expression until another extreme close up of a beautiful African American woman appears. The scene is no longer in the house and the background is all white. Maybe a bed she’s laying on? She does seem to be laying down, but all you can see is her face and up to the top her shoulders. Her hair is down and curly, maybe she’s taking a photoshoot? You can’t tell if she’s wearing clothes or not from the scene, and she’s staring at the camera as if she’s about to tell a story. Maybe this is the friend the guy from the first scene is trying to contact or the reason he needs to contact a friend. The close up could mean the director wanted something to be hidden and revealed later. This is the second close up shot so far in 5 seconds.

0:06

In this short second, two more people appear very fast back to back. The first is an African American man who appears to be sweating and you can’t tell if he has on clothes either. It’s another close so I can infer these close ups are meaningful to the video. The guy’s expression looks of concern and his background is blurred but looks red, white, and tan. Maybe a basketball court? The second person who appears is a white woman who looks to be sitting down on a comfy chair. Again, the background is blurred and the shot is a close up, similar to the last three. Both people are on the screen for a split second and i think these close ups are going to be continued. I’m having trouble trying to connect the close ups to the original scene.

0:07

The second starts with another close up of a girl who looks like a teenager. The background also is blurred like the other closeups, but I can make-out balloons. I can see a gold “P”, and a gold “R” together, does it spell out Prom? The girl has straightened hair and lip gloss on which also may contribute to the prom theme. Her expression seems very nonchalant. There are two more closeups in this second. One is of a white boy laying in a bed\, similar to the second close up of the video. His lips looks chapped and he also has a nonchalant look on his face. Maybe the morning after a one night stand?

0:08

The next second shows another closeup. The next close up is of another white man who looks to be older and the background is the same as the African american man, with the red, white, and tan colors blurred. He also appears to be sweating. But I can make out flowers in the background, so I no longer think it’s a basketball court.

0:09

The next closeup in this second correlates with the teenage girl from an earlier second. I can make out the top of a suit and the balloons from the background are of a gold “M”, and a gold question mark. This adds to the prom spelling question I had. The next closeup is of another girl who has another similar background to one of the people in an earlier second.

0:10

The same African american woman from the second close-up of the video is seen again, and the white man from the scene with the flowers is also seen again in this scene.

0:11-0:13

More closeups from the beginning of the video are seen in these seconds.

0:14-0:16

The same guy from the beginning of the commercial who was sitting with his legs crossed appears again, but this time it isn’t a close-up. He stays like this for a few seconds.

0:16-0:21

These seconds still show the guy talking but now it’s a close-up of him again. He seems to be wondering about something the way his head shifts to one side. He continues to talk like this for quite some time.

0:21-0:27

The scene shifts to the fish tank with the words “Find out how you can help a friend with their mental health at seizetheawkward.org” written in small yellow font. The words “Seize the awkward” stays on the screen for the rest of the video.

Visual Rhetoric- HazelnutLatte

0:01- The scene opens up on a modern home living room, showing a women who seems to be wearing a robe, and 2 dogs. The robe indicates that she has probably just woken up, which leads us to believe that she lives in the home being shown. There is a bright light coming through the window, shining behind the various plants in her house. It is very sunny so we can infer she leaves in a sunny area, or it is a nice day. The two dogs, and the woman look happy and the dogs look as if they are waiting for a treat because she has her hand held out as if she has something in it to give to the dogs.

0:02- The words that project on the screen, “The shelter pet project presents,” indicates that this is a commercial for animals. This clip also shows one of the dogs high-fiving the owner from the previous shot. The other dog sits behind the black and white dog who is giving her owner a high-five. This leads us to think that the dogs are doing tricks to earn their treat.

0:04- the woman and her two dogs are now outside, in front of what looks like the bottom of a palm tree, so we can conclude that they live in a sunny area, like california. Their names come up on the screen to show that this story is about them.

0: 08- The woman is talking to one of the dogs, the dog sitting on the couch opposite to her. She is laying down and gesturing as though she is venting or complaining about something, and the dog is positioned to look like she is listening to her owner. This shows that the dog is someone that the woman can talk to, like the dog is her best friend or therapist.

0:013- The woman is playing with the two dogs outside, and looks like she is struggling to play tug of war with the white dog. The struggle  in her face shows she is putting in effort which leads us ot the conclusion that this game is a workout for her. The words on the screen “personal trainers” confirm that the dogs can serve a purpose as a fitness trainer as well.

0:019- This scene goes back to the modern living room inside.l The woman is putting on a hat to see if matches with her outfit, and is talking to her dogs as they sit behind her. The dogs watch her and listen as she tries on the hat, and stare at it, leading us t believe they are also helping her with her fashion choices.

0:21- The woman is now playing with the dogs in her kitchen, leading us to believe she loves them and she loves to have fun and play with them. At this point we can conclude that she lives alone with her two dogs because the house seems very empty.

0:22- The woman, Olivia, takes a selfie with her dogs outside. She is holding her dogs to show how she cares for them. The picture is a way to showcase her love for the dogs, and show the world how happy she is with them in her life. From this we can conclude that she posted it on some form of social media.

0:24- She kisses and pets her dogs, showing that she loves them and cares for them deeply.

0:27- The words “theshelterpetproject.org” and “#AdoptPureLove” come on the screen, and we can conclude that the commercial is an add for a pet shelter. They are trying to get people to adopt a dog by selling the image that if you adopt a dog from the shelter, you will gain pure love.

Visual Rhetoric–nugget

0:01-0:02

The video starts out looking like it was recorded on an old camera. We see a lady standing in a doorway in a wedding gown holding white flowers.

0:03-0:04

The scene switches to a view of three women standing in front of a white arch. One women is in a suit and the other women is in a wedding dress. The two women are stood across from each other holding each others hands while the third person reads from a paper. It looks as though there is a marriage ceremony being performed.

0:05-0:06

A woman is shown smiling and shaking her head while she is holding a baby. The baby’s hand is touching her face. It seems

0:07-0:10

Four people are sitting on a couch, two women and a baby and a toddler. One woman is holding the baby on her lap while showing the baby what is assumed to be a photograph. The other woman is sitting next to the little girl reading a book to her. Both women looked genuinely happy to be spending time with the kids.

0:11-0:14

On screen text pops up “Jamie and Krista’s newborn was denied medical care.” Behind the text is a picture of the two women and a picture of a newborn baby.

0:15-0:17

On screen text says “For having two moms” Behind the text is a picture of Jamie and Krista standing next to each other and smiling.

0:18-0:19

0:01- It appears that a girl is doing some type of math homework. You can tell because she is holding a pencil to a power with math problems on it.

0:02- It is confirmed that it is a girl doing the homework when we see her face. She seems stressed out because she is holding her head while looking at the paper.

0:06- we see a man is with her. He is most likely her dad. He may be helping with the homework or maybe he is working on his own things for work.

0:13- we see the dad pull out his phone discreetly and use the calculator. This may be so that he can help his daughter with her homework.

0:19- she noticed him on his phone so he throws it down on the table to make it seem like he wasn’t using it.

0:23- we see words pop up on the screen saying that if you live your child enough then you will relearn math.

0:25- It basically says that if you love your child then you will go to the website displayed to make sure your child is safe in the car. They use math as a way to get your attention and then guilt you into visiting their website.

Visual Rhetoric- Wazoo

0:01 In the first second I see a near totaled Mini Van pulling into a driveway. There is also a woman watering plants. It seems to be winter time as there is no leaves on any of the trees. This could be a small middle class family’s house.

0:02-0:03 Now I see a teenage girl getting out of the car. The dents are more visible now but she seems not to care about any of the dents.

0:04-0:05 Now The woman calls the girl leia and asks her if she put another dent in the car again. This woman is probably her mother.

0:06 She responds saying, “this one, No” pointing to one of the dents. she sounds careless but her mother also is careless because she just lets this happen all the time.

0:08-10 The mother brings up the argument by asking, ” were you texting and driving again.” she says this almost like its a regular thing. She does have a concerned look on her face.

0:11 The girl responds pretty casually acting like is normal Because her whole car is wrecked.

0:12 Now I see a bulldozer ripping the front bumper off the car

0:13 Now we get a quick shot of a frightened mother.

0:14-0:19 A man opens the door texting. We hear him typing thats how we know. He then says high leia, and she responds hi dad indicating that he is her father.During the conversation both seemed to think of it as a joke and were laughing. He also says sorry about your bumper after he destroyed it.

0:20-23 we hear them both laugh and text then a a black screen with a message comes up. it says Distracted driving is NO JOKE. Also in the background noise of this is the same texting on an iPhone sound. This ad is pretty easy to conclude what they are trying to portray. It is an average family just like mine and the girl thinks its ok to drive distracted and then they show us what happens to your car when you drive distracted. This ad uses alot of sarcasm to portray their argument.

Visual Rhetoric – Halizzle

0:01

The ad starts our with a man running in a yard with his pitbulls. He is holding a football as he runs and then bends down to pet them. – Most dogs in shelters happen to be pitbulls, due to their bad reputation.

0:06

The man is in a room, probably his home, and there are two yoga matts laid down. The dog is sitting to the left and the man is doing push ups on the right. The dog has a gray collar and a light blue tag, in the background there are two windows, a work out ball and a shelf with weights in it. The camera zooms in to the dog and shows that he is missing both eyes, indicating he is blind.

0:13

The scene is now in his living room, there are lots of tall windows, and a double glass door. He is playing a video game while his other dog sits beside him with his head on the man’s lap. This is showing that his dogs are his best friends, they do everything with him.

0:16

They re back in the yard running around with he football ad the dog chases him again. The camera moves over tot eh dog who is now running back with he football in his mouth.

0:23

The camera goes back and forth to the yard, the work out room and the couch. Each time the dogs are there with him, doing whatever it is that the man is doing. The dogs look happy, friendly, and active.

Visual Rewrite-Chavanillo

0:00 – 01

The ad starts with young, white,  male soldier with black  hair coming out of a bright, white hallway with rectangular mirror and windows all over. His smooth face and hairline indicates that he is in his twenties. He is getting closer to the camera that is only letting me see the soldier from the waist up. I could see that he is a soldier because he is dressed in military Camouflage, green and tan, suitable for a place of light vegetation (no dessert, no arctic). With his uniform unbuttoned at the throat it shows a Khaki undershirt with straps across his shoulders, indicating that he is carrying a knapsack. The camera zooms in on the man’s face, showing us all that he is a generic soldier because of all his characteristics.

0:02

Then the camera zooms out making me see the empty airport, like no one is there.  The soldier is in the mid-ground of the shot. He might feel alone because he doesn’t see his fellow soldiers. like if he was in his own world. Now I could see his whole uniform.  He is looking around and trying to see if there are people around him.

0:03-06

Next the camera zooms again to his face making me see that he is moving his head realizing that no one is there. I could see how worried and lonely he feels. He might be thinking where’s everyone. I could see that he is a United States soldier because he has a batch on his right  sleeve that has USA flag. Maybe he came from camp training and now his looking for his fellow soldiers. While the Camera zooms even more you could realize that the camera background angle changed towards the white windows indicating that  is day time.

0:07

He is in the suitcase pickup luggage station waiting for his suitcase, but while he is waiting for the machine to through his suitcase it zoomed out and you could see all this suit cases coming out, but no one is around there. Like if everyone disappears and suitcases were left behind. This shows that he might feel like no one is around him, but I believe that they are is just that in his mind he feels lonely like no one is going to accept him. Like if everyone was invisible in his eyes. Maybe he is trying to look for some friends from the military and he can’t find nobody.

0:08-10

Then he turns out walking across the street, you see that he is in New York because of how the building looks like. Brown and peach block building. New York is fool with this kind of buildings. Maybe he is trying to look for the person that must pick him up. Now he is in the street walking. Indicating that he is trying to see if he could see someone.

0:11-12

While he is walking in the middle of the street the camera focus on his face showing us that he is fool of emotions, loneliness, sadness, lost that he can’t see no one. Maybe he really doesn’t know where he’s going, and he is overwhelmed on how many buildings are there. He maybe is trying to look for the person that is going to pick him up.

0:13

While he continue’s  walking the camera angle changes, I see the soldiers whole body from the back, but it zoomed out enough that we see what he sees, all the big buildings that tell me he is in NYC. You could see how the buildings are shaped and the only place that got this kind of buildings is New York. I could see that he feels like he doesn’t belong and like if he was in a room lonely in the dark. He can’t see no one while everyone could see him. He might feel like no one is going to accept him. Maybe he is a soldier from the USA army but from another country.

0:14-17

Then he stopped walking, stud still in the middle of the street and took of his duffel bag and put it on the floor,  he was mesmerized on how the buildings were. This might be his first time in New York or not. While he is observing a white 40-year-old guy with white hair start walking towards him. Maybe that’s his father, or his tourist. When the guy gets closer the soldier turns his head looking at him with straight face and smiles at him. This is a symbol that he knows this man. The person he was looking for. This old man is also wearing a Khaki shirt with the front of the shirt saying marine. I say this because the shot only captured “arine” because of the open khaki button up shirt covering the rest of the letters of the shirt.

0:18-20

Then they start shaking hands, but the camera is just focus in the hands and I could say that while the camera was focusing on the hand in the background two woman were crossing the street. Showing that people started to pop up when the soldier got in contact with the white hair guy. Maybe this is a friend, but in my eyes, I believe this might be his father or tourist to navigate him. Maybe that is his tourist for military reasons. Them both are marine soldiers.

0:21-23

They shake their hands so hard up and down with a strong grip that shows respect. Then he pads him on the shoulders like if he was saying everything is going to be fine. I’m here to help you. The soldier than start picking is bag from the floor like if he was going to leave with him.  This might be showing that he doesn’t feel lonely anymore. Before he saw the guy, his face expression was always a sad one, worried, felt lonely, like he didn’t know where to go and then when the guy came his face changed right way. He felt like he wasn’t alone anymore.

0:24

The camera zooms out showing a bunch of people and taxes in the street. Showing that no one is alone. Showing that he is not alone. the video ended by showing a quote that said, ” If you’re a veteran of Iraq or Afghanistan, you’re not alone.” With this quote I could conclude that this ad was about accepting everybody as they are. Specially Iraq and Afghanistan veterans because their nationality is what defines them. What really defines them is who they are and how they really serve the country. Not everybody is the same. If veterans save our lives the last thing we could do is helping them when they need us.

The Coworker #That’s Harassment

0:00

A man and a women are talking. The Women is wearing an apron and is seen cutting fruits and vegetables which shows the audience that the two must work together. It seems as though they are in a restaurant alone after hours, possibly preparing for tomorrow.

0:02

The man next tot he red headed woman is seen washing glasses and cups. He also has on a apron. The audience can conclude they work in a bar area being that there are glasses of wine and a shelf full of wine and other alcoholic drinks hanging on the wall.

0:05

They both are seen laughing, the man seems to make jokes and the women joke alongside with him. He looks at her from the side and smiles as he continues to talk to her.

0:08

As they continue to speak to one another, he looks back at the woman but no longer at her face, her entire body.

0:10

The audience sees captions that read “based on a real incident”. This shows that although we cannot here what is going on, the result is that something bad between the man and the woman seen int he scene is about to occur. The caption also implies that this incident happens often. Most likely when the store or restaurant is closing.

0:13

The man is seen behind the women and is pointing towards the back area where they will no longer be seen. She seems to not pay attention to where he is pointing, but continues to laugh because she thinks he is joking.

0:16

He lifts up his sleeves and touches the hair of the woman. He looks at her and plays with her hair as she’s working.

0:19

He continues to touch her hair, then he moves closer to he and begins to whisper in her ear. She turns around slightly.

0:21 -0:24

She mouths the word “What” as it comes to a shock to her as to what he whispered in her ear. He whispers again in her ear,, but then he begin to bite her ear and touch her. This shows that he has a sort of sexual interest in his coworker. She turns around and her face shows she is concerned about his actions. She then jumps forward showing that she is scared.

0:25

The hashtag “That’s Harassment” at the end of the video, can conclude that the visuals given to the audience were to show harassment in the work area. The touching and the whispering of the man to the women displayed unprofessional act in the work force that occurs in the work field.

Visual Rhetoric- pomegranate

“Everything You Do and Say”

0:00

At the beginning of the ad, it shows a short picture of a building. The director probably did this so that you get a feel for the setting, so you can understand the ad further. Also so you don’t ask the question, where is this taking place, when you’re watching the ad.

0:01

The next second, we are showed a bird’s eye view of the scene. It looks like an empty lobby. It looks as if two people are dancing in the middle, and a man is recording them. Why is this? There are people around. Some spectating, some minding their own business. The purpose of this is I guess to set the story in place. To show the background for the authors next move.

0:02

The next second we come to find that it is in the middle of a school, and those two people in the middle were not dancing. One boy was actually throwing another boy around, almost fighting. However, the one being thrown was not fighting back. The author shows this as an example of bullying.

0:03

The next second is the bell ringing indicating its time for class but as the the next second rolls around, it shows him hiding in a bathroom, then of people looking at him in the hall with his head in the locker. The author probably did this to show that when one person bully’s you, it’s kind of hard to go out there and actually be yourself.

0:07

The next frame is the boy standing by a train, almost isolating himself from everyone else. Bullying can make you feel so alone and you want to, again, isolate yourself from everyone. That any thought of getting away from it won’t even scare you. The next frame is a storm, setting the scene for a gloomy, yet kind of scary night.

0:08-0:09

Then, a Spider-Man costume appears, and the boy who was bullied reflection slowly shows in front. The author might be showing the reader that even people that do the most saving have problems of their own. Why Spider-Man, though? Why not any other superhero.

0:10

It then shows him in a whole different costume, showing that he is not exactly Spider-Man, but he is too a superhero and wants to help people along side of Spider-Man. This shows that he cannot be Spider-Man, but he can do and help people just as Spider-Man does.

0:11-0:12

He has a conversation with Spider-Man, who is probably giving the bullied boy advice. It can either be about his personal life, or it could be about the fact that he is too a superhero and he needs help on how and who to save.

0:13-0:16

It shows bullied boy taking off his mask, almost out of breath, giving us the vibe that he almost got caught or that he just did some insane activity that calls for him to take a breather. The author probably does this to send the message of, “even if you are a superhero, and are able to do things out of the ordinary, you still might not be able to keep up with what life throws at you.” The real Spider-Man continues to have a conversation with him and he’s holding up one finger. This could be hes telling the boy he has to worry about one thing at a time. Being a superhero is clearly rough enough, so you have to worry about fixing only one thing at a time.

0:17-0:19

He bumps into a girl at school in the next frame. It looks like one of those moments in a movie where the two people unexpectedly bump into each other and its love at first sight. It then turns to another with him talking to someone who we can assume to be his dad. He is probably asking for advice on what to do about the girl. It transitions to the girl sitting in class, laughing or smiling, showing that he is thinking about her. Then, it goes to the to the bullied boy fist bumping another boy who looks kind of scared. The boy almost looks shocked that bullied boy is a super hero. You wouldn’t expect someone who gets beaten physically, emotionally, or mentally to have the capability of being able to try and save anyone more than himself.

0:20-0:21

We see superhero boy sitting on the side of the building. It then goes to the boys hand punching a window and then jumping, falling, and flying in the air. Looking like he’s almost about to hurt himself, or potentially end his life.Bullying can make people think they are not worth their lives and can lead them to do bad things to themselves that can affect not only them but the people around them.

0:23

It then goes to him and the girl in school. He puts his hand on her shoulder and says something. He has a half smile/ grin on his face indicating that he is either excited or nervous. She says something back, while looking down at his hand. This can either mean she is excited that he is engaging in physical activity with her or she is nervous and afraid of what is going to happen next.

0:24

It then turns back to the scene of him falling, where he shoots a web to save himself right before he hits the top of the building. This can mean that just one person can save you from doing things that can totally hurt yourself and potentially end your life, which is something no one should have to do. Then the information for the bullying foundation appears, and the ad is over.

White Paper- doorknob9

  • Jared Goff is the worst NFC West quarterback to ever make it to the Super Bowl.
  • Jared Goff is the worst post season quarterback to have a bye week in both post season appearances.

I’m trying to prove that Jared Goff is not an elite quarterback, and should not be looked at as one.

Topics for smaller papers:

  1. Poor post season play by a quarterback will lead them to losing at some point in their playoff run.
  2. A first round bye could damage a team later down the road due to the amount of inactivity during that week.
  3. A good regular season performance does not reflect how a team will play in the post season.

I don’t feel amazing about my progress thus far, but there is plenty of time for improvement. I’m having a hard time figuring out exactly what to do in this class but that’s my fault for missing 2 classes. I intend to make the rest of the classes this semester and hope to improve my hypothesis and my sources because I feel as though they aren’t the best outcomes I can provide. My opinions on my hypothesis haven’t exactly changed, but rather narrowed down, or more specific. I anticipate me eventual outcome to be very good as we have a lot of time to improve on these things.
