A huge problem exists in Vancouver with heroin addicts committing crimes to support their habits. The “free heroin for addicts” program exists only to help addicts live comfortably and productively. However, Drug addicts are responsible for a high rate of crimes in the area. It is obvious that addicts have a hard time getting through their day to day lives. Daily activities such as jobs, interactions, and relationships are hard to maintain. A heroin addict is willing to do anything(especially criminally) to get their fix. Addicts will break, enter, and steal with no remorse. They will search high and low to feed their addiction. Through this program, however, addicts will receive no support in transitioning off of the drug. The program only serves to reduce heroin related crime. If patients are given heroin, they won’t have to source it through illegal or dangerous means. Hospital visits from heroin overdose will consequently be reduced. Hospitals shouldn’t be forced to take patients that come off the streets dying from their choice to use heroin, and can’t even pay for their treatment. By giving these addicted individuals free heroin, it might reduce the crime rate, but the addicts in question will not reach the catharsis of freeing oneself from the prison that is addiction.
