Stand Your Ground — Jon Gonzoph

The law Stand Your Ground allows a person to kill someone in self-defense. This law encourages a “culture of violence.” Under this law and others like it, people are allowed to shoot first and never ask questions, giving them the equivalent of a “license to kill.” Citizens can now resolve everyday conflicts like road rage and neighborly disputes with their guns instead of their words. It is certainly going to lead to even more unpunished killing when these lunatics escape punishment by using a self-defense excuse. In Florida alone, so-called “justified killings” have tripled since the passing of this law in 2005. When people are allowed to take the law into their own hands, they will naturally believe that they are superior simply because they have the power to enforce their will.

Those who think it will not affect them are dead wrong–and might end up that way literally. Gun ownership is already on the rise, and the passage of these laws nearly mandates that everyone carry a gun for self-defense. Innocents will be killed because some deranged people believes that their genders, races, or even clothing makes them a threat. Compare the killing of an innocent seventeen-year-old in Florida, apparently for the crime of wearing a hoodie, to the deaths by stoning of 90 teenagers in Iraq for wearing clothing emblazoned with skulls and other imagery the “moral police” believed was a danger to society. Stand Your Ground creates more problems than it solves and puts the rights of criminals over citizens’ lives.

Stand Your Ground – Marty Bell

The law called Stand Your Ground says anyone can kill someone in self-defense. This law may create a culture of violence. Under “shoot first” laws like this, anyone can engage in violent behavior in the name of self-defense and basically have a license to kill. When citizens have everyday conflicts, like road rage, neighborly disputes, and suspicion of other races, they’re allowed to resolve the conflict with guns. The “self-defense” excuse will lead to more killings. These laws will increase the number of murders. The number of “justifiable” killings in Florida has tripled since Stand Your Ground passed in 2005. When people can take the law into their own hands, the peoples’ rights often get trampled. My rights come first and if I have a gun you’re out of luck. One consequence of these laws will be more “street justice.”

And don’t think it won’t affect you; people are less safe when they’re not sure whether their neighbor is packing heat. There’s already more gun possession than ever before, and it’s only going to get worse if these laws continue to gets passed. With these laws, innocent people are nearly certainly likely to get shot. In short, Stand Your Ground creates more trouble than it’s worth.

Stand Your Ground (Revised) — Cassie Hoffman

A law currently in effect called “Stand Your Ground” expands the boundaries of self-defense to include the killing of a person who is–or appears to be–threatening. This legislature can contribute to a culture of violence. Under this “shoot-first” law, people are essentially given a license to kill in the name of self-defense. It increases the possibility of typical everyday conflicts being resolved with firearms, such as road rage, neighborly disputes, and suspicion due to racial discrimination — a very drastic measure for such small disputes. This “self-defense” excuse will undoubtedly lead to more fatalities from gunfire because it is so easy for people to defend their intentions when the law provides them with a “right” for self-defense; it can also can lead to an increase in “street justice.” In Florida, for example, the number of “justifiable” killings has tripled since the “Stand Your Ground” law was passed in 2005. When people are allowed to take the law into their own hands, the rights of others often get trampled.

No one is immune to the issue at hand; it affects the entire population because one can never be certain if others — neighbors, friends, family members, etc. — are packing heat. This apparent danger and the fear it causes in people have already increased since the “Stand Your Ground” law was initially passed, and they will only continue to do so if similar laws are passed in the future. This legislation puts innocent people at a higher risk of being shot in the name of “self-defense.” In short, “Stand Your Ground” creates more trouble than it’s worth.

Stand Your Ground(fixed) – Bill Brooks

The “Stand Your Ground” law, which states that it is legal to kill someone in self-defense, can create a culture of violence.  Under this “shoot first” law, violent behavior can be disguised under the term self-defense, giving society a license to kill.  Under this law, everyday conflicts like road rage, neighborly disputes, and suspicion of other races can be solved with guns and classified as self-defense.  This law will permit more cold-blooded killers to use self-defense as an excuse in court. For example, the number of “justifiable killings” in Florida has tripled since the “Stand Your Ground” law was passed in 2005.  When a person is allowed to take the law into his own hands, rights are often trampled.  The rights of the person holding the gun tend to come first, leading to “street justice.”

This law will affect all of society; every person will feel less safe, worrying that his neighbor might be carrying a firearm.  There is already more social unrest than ever before, and this law only serves to make it worse.  This dangerous law places innocent people at increased risk of being shot.  The “Stand Your Ground” Law creates more problems than it solves.

Stand your ground – Tyson Still

Stand Your Ground with Caution

A new law, Stand Your Ground, says it is okay to kill someone in self-defense. A culture of violence could be created by this law. Under this “shoot first” law, we have a license to kill someone and declare it self-defense. When citizens have everyday conflicts  such as road rage, neighborly disputes, and suspicion of other races, they’re now allowed to resolve these problems with guns. This will definitely lead to more deaths when it become too easy for us to use the “self-defense” excuse. Because these “justifiable killings have triples since 2005, murders are more likely to increase else where.  When people are allowed to take the law into their own hands, people’s rights get trampled.

All humans could be in danger when they’re not sure whether their neighbor may be packing heat. There’s already more of murder than ever before, and passing this law will only make it worse. When a law like this gets passed, innocent people are more likely to get shot. In short, Stand Your Ground is a law that will create more trouble than it’s worth. We should repeal this law to prove that we respect our citizens’ lives.

Stand Your Ground – Joe Mleczko

According to the law “Stand Your Ground,” anyone can kill someone “found to be threatening.” Unfortunately, this law has potential to create a culture of violence. Under “shoot first” laws, a threatened person may act with violent behavior in the name of self-defense. Now, conflicts such as road rage, neighborly disputes, and suspicion of other races may be solved using firearms. Over time, killings will continue to increase because using the “self defense” excuse is so easy. Since this law’s institution, Florida has seen the number of “justifiable killings” increase by 300%, proving that “Stand Your Ground” leads to more murders. Allowing ordinary citizens to take the law into their own hands increases the chance of seeing people’s rights trampled.

“Stand Your Ground” affects everyone because there is always a possibility someone is packing heat. There are already more people carrying guns than ever before, and it’s only going to get worse if more of these laws are passed. Passing laws such as “Stand Your Ground” will cause innocent people to get shot. In short, “Stand Your Ground” creates more trouble than it’s worth. Repealing this law will prove to the people of Florida that the government is concerned with the use of weapons.

Stand Your Ground with Caution – Tabitha Corra

The Stand Your Ground law states a person can kill someone in self- defense.  The law can create a culture of violence. Under the “shoot first” law, a person can engage in violent behavior in the name of self defense, basically having a license to kill. When people have everyday conflicts like road rage or neighborly disputes, the Stand Your Ground law allows to resolve the conflict with guns. Killing rates are likely going rise because of the easiness for someone to use the “self-defense” excuse . In Florida, “justifiable” killings have tripled since the Stand Your Ground law passed in 2005 making it likely that this law will increase the number of murders. When  people are allowed to take the law into their own hands, the peoples’ rights often get trampled. My rights come first and if I have a gun you’re out of luck. One consequence from this law is there will be more “street justice.”

No one should dismiss this law because no one knows what will happen if he/she aggravates the wrong person. Stories about neighbors turning on each other are becoming more common and are only going to get worse if laws like this one are passed. Innocent people are more likely to get hurt if laws. In short, Stand Your Ground creates more trouble than it is worth. We will determine whether we respect our citizens’ lives or criminals’ by choosing whether to repeal this law or not.

When citizens have everyday conflicts like road rage, neighborly disputes, and suspicion of other races, they’re now allowed to resolve their everyday conflicts with guns. Stand Your Ground with Caution

The Stand Your Ground law says a person can kill someone in self-defense. This can create a culture of violence. Under this “shoot first” law, one can engage in violent behavior in the name of self-defense and therefore have a license to kill. When citizens have everyday conflicts such as road rage, neighborly disputes, and suspicion of other races, they’re now allowed to resolve problems with guns. This will lead to more people killing others using the “self-defense” excuse. Because “justifiable” killings have tripled since the Stand Your Ground law passed in 2005, it’s reasonable to assume that it will increase elsewhere also. When we are allowed to take the law into our own hands, our rights get trampled.

We are all in danger if we’re not sure whether our neighbor may be packing heat. There’s already more danger than ever before, and it’s only going to get worse if similar laws get passed. People are more likely to get shot if this law and similar laws get passed. In short, Stand Your Ground is a law that creates more trouble than it’s worth.
