Euthanasia For Kids-

It seems counterintuitive that children are allowed to make a decision on euthanasia when they might not by in the right frame of mind to do so, whether that be because of their age or an illness they may be suffereing from.

Belgium has had euthanasia availible to adults since 2002, and in 2014 they ammended that to allow it for children as well. This would allow kids with terminally ill diseases to ceace their pain and put them out of their misery. This would of course also require consent from a parent. The vote was won 86 to 44 in the house, but was opposed by religous leaders and onservative politicians.

It doesn’t seem right for young children especially to invoke this right, as they might not be in the right frame of mind to make it. I’d assume the parents would be against it too, unless they thought it the right thing to do.

Gender Categories in the Olympics

It seems counterintuitive that Facebook has more catgories of genders than the Olympics. We’re now in an age of normalizing choosing your own gender and how you identify yourself. On Facebook besides male or female, there is a third option of “other” where there is a whole well of things to choose from.

I find it interesting how the Olympics, one of the grandest stages in the world, has percieved this new normal. Recently China has had gymnasts who look quite like literal children. Really they could have beeen delayed their hormones, in an effort to keep the athletes fresh as possible.

If Facebook, a social media platform, has all these options for how people identify, shouldn’t the Olumpics do the same thing? Making a whole new category for every event would be tough and strange, but surely it could be done.

Google’s Power

It seems counterintuitive that a search engine like google has this immense ability and power in the world. People my age have grown up with Google. The ability to access anything has always been right there. Now in an age where social media rules the world, shouldn’t google lock down on what is accessible a bit.

It isn’t hard whatsoever to find out anything about anyone anymore. All it takes is a google search. Kids now might not know what they are getting into with all of their info online.

If anyone can use it, that means dangerous people or those with harmul intentions can get info for whatever they want to do> Addresses, numbers, and other personal information is all availible for the world to see. Google should take that into consideration.

Does Using Paper Take CO2 out of the Environment?

It seems counterintuitive that using paper takes CO2 out of the environment, however we keep cutting down trees.

16.7 million tons of carbon was sequestered in wood products and landfills, which is the permanent removal of carbon in the atmosphere. When you cut a tree down it still holds on to carbon. This is why 16.7 million tons of carbon still lies in the landfills. In total, about 61.1 million tons of carbon dioxide is floating in the atmosphere which is equivalent to the emissions of 10.7 million cars. The best solution to help keep carbon out of the environment, is to stop cutting down trees and continue planting more.

Trees are able use photosynthesis to take in water, carbon dioxide and release oxygen as a waste product. Trees will be able to naturally turn CO2 into O2 which will be beneficial to the environment because it will give more oxygen to the humans and take away some carbon in the atmosphere.

Google’s Earth

It seems counterintuitive that google is one of the most accessible sites, but it has a much more negative impact on us than we realize.

Google is accessible from anywhere in the world at any time we need it. Some people ask google for ideas about dinner, movie and food ideas. Others use google to talk and find out what’s going on in the world. Google will know what we want before we know what we want. Through our devices, google is listening to every conversation to gather information on what we want to see and hear.

Google has surveillance on us which is why they always know what option to pick when we ask a question, or always has a pop up ad on what we were talking about 2 days ago. Google has grown and become very powerful but how much is too much? We spend hours on google without us even realizing time is passing. Google has done so much research on each person and has a web of everything you researched all time.

Young people are the most active on social media platforms. They are exposing their private life and letting anyone see it. If google was the slightest bit concerned they would put restrictions on children at a young age. “If you’re not paying for it, you are the product.”

Gun Control

It seems counterintuitive that a mentally unstable man was able to purchase a handgun yet wasn’t able to attend school.

Guns have grown in popularity in America. There are about 85 guns per 100 people in America. That is a crazy number which will probably get bigger unfortunately. Everyday about 80 people die from guns and several are injured.

States that have less gun laws which equals more guns have a higher suicude rate and homicides than states that have strict gun laws. Children in America are 11 times more likely to die in a gun accident than in other developed countries.

To help reduce gun deaths and injuries we can limit the gun purchase for how many guns a person can buy at a time to once a month. The government can also get tougher retailers who sell guns and make it harder for traffickers to try and get an abundant amount at once. Lastly to have stricter and more in depth background checks on people before giving them the gun.

Free Heroin to Battle Addiction

It seems counterintuitive that Vancouver has chosen to cure a heroin addicts addiction, by supplying them with the best heroin in the world. This is a program that in which heroin addicts are supplied with heroin prescribed by a doctor to “fight their demons”. Addiction is merely a psychological attachment due to the repeated use of something.

I feel as though you can’t cure someone’s addiction with the thing that has them addicted, it simply cancels itself. It is almost like giving a serial killer a gun or better yet, giving a thief a code to the bank. It makes you sit back and ask yourself , what good are you really doing. The program is about helping addicts by giving them the drug that they yearn for, it is said to help society by having less overdoses, less prostitution, and just overall much less heroin related crimes. The drug itself is what causes this mass hysteria. They thought that by giving them this drug it would help. It is a perplexing situation especially when it comes to moral.

Gun Regulation

It seems counterintuitive that a man named Jared Loughner was consider too mentally unstable to attend a community college , also rejected by the army. Yet he was able to buy a Glock with a 33 round magazine and nobody sees an issue with that. This goes to show that guns can be possessed by anyone. If someone isn’t able to go the Army, how on earth are they able to purchase and wield a Glock. This would mean that Jared who is a man who is deemed to be mentally unstable, has a dangerous weapon in his possession. This makes very little sense to me. Guns that are used to protect have seen to cause unnecessary senseless damage to the public.

How to Armor Planes

It seems counterintuitive to put armor where it is less needed on a plane. In this situation the obvious is the wrong. The planes would be examined and thoroughly checked out to see which parts had been dealt the most damage.

Instead of repairing those parts, the parts that were repaired were the ones that were least damaged. What I would really want to do is armor up those weak points and make sure I have a well balanced plane. The obvious answer would be to protect the weak points and maintain the strong points. The wrong thing to do would be to strengthen up the already strong points and let the weak ones suffer (which seems to be the situation at hand).

Are Multivitamins Dangerous?

It seems counterintuitive that multivitamins would actually harm you rather than help you. It can be seen that nearly one third of Americans take multivitamins every day. On top of this the amount of people taking them has been increasing each year, but do they really help?

In studies tested it was found that Vitamins really did not do all that they promised such as promoting breast health or keeping a healthy heart. These vitamins are not something that people actually need and seem to be a waste of money.

It seems that the majority of people actually get their needed vitamins from their food. It can seem that too much of these vitamins can actually hurt people. Too much iron in the elderly can lead to heart disease, and Vitamin A in pregnant women can lead to an increase in birth defects.

The Lack of warnings on bottles from the FDA puts unsuspecting people at risk. These vitamins are made to help people but are actually hurting them.

Extreme Parenting

It seems counterintuitive to force your child to work hard just so that they can be average. In China, and even in America, Chinese moms tend to make their children work extremely hard on schoolwork and do not let them participate in certain extracurricular activities. Some of these mothers do not let their children participate in sleepovers, watch tv, or participate in their own desired extracurricular activities.

Making children work hard is good for their work ethic and helping them with their knowledge, but is extreme parenting effective? This extreme parenting does not help the children develop in some ways such as social skills and developing who they want to be as a person.

This parenting style is extremely stressful on students in China and especially the Gaokao exam. The Gaokao exam has pushed students to suicide because of its importance.

In many cases majors in college are chosen by the parents which leads the students to be unhappy. By letting the parents choose the direction of their child it ends with them being average instead of letting them choose who they want to be.

How to Armor Planes

It may seem counterintuitive to armor planes in the spots they come back least damaged. In World War II the question was where to armor planes in order to keep them in the sky?

The idea was to armor the planes that came back in the spots where they were most damaged. This would make sure that these damaged spots would be able to withstand enemy fire.

Instead Abraham Wald said that the areas on these damaged planes should not be areas of concern, as the areas that were hit did not affect the plane and they were able to make it back.

Instead armor them in the areas that they were not damaged as the planes that came back were not hit in these spots, but the planes that crashed were hit in these spots. This ensured that these important spots on the planes were fully protected from German anti-aircraft fire.

Child Euthanasia

It seems counterintuitive that doctors who are meant to aid mentally and physically ill patients would give the option of euthanasia to a patient that is either too young to understand their situation or those who are mentally unstable and are not in the proper mindset and do not fit the criteria to undertake this act.

In the country of Belgium, euthanasia has been legal since the year 2002, but has been prohibited for patients under the age of 18. Belgium is now the first country to lift all restrictions on the act and has even been opened up to children with disabilities.

The act gets abused in the country and to “pass a law like that which allows termination of life for minors with disabilities is unacceptable” says Alex Schadenberg of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition. He fears that the current practice instituted for Euthanasia has now simply become an easy way to cover-up medical errors.

Paul Saba of the Physicians for Social Justice has said people are already being euthanized simply because they are “tired of life” whish has already showed that despite the government and their assurances of setting a very strict criteria has not worked and is already being taken advantage of.

Professor Tom Mortier’s mother was euthanized in 2012 without any consent from the family simply because of her chronic depression and they were alerted by the hospital of this occurrence the day after it was carried out.

The Euthanasia situation in Belgium is out of control and it is only getting worse as time goes on.

Free Heroin to Battle Addiction

It seems counterintuitive that in order to solve a massive drug problem and get these drugs off the streets, that instead you set up a safezone where addicts can safely do their drugs without fear of being arrested or punished by law enforcement. What’s even worse is giving the worst addicts the best doses of heroin on the entire planet.

Downtown Eastside is a port town in Vancouver which has allowed for shipments of drugs to come in by boat which in turn has turned the whole town into an epicenter of drug usage in the city. In order to stem this problem, Vancouver has set up a safe zone where addicts can safely take their drugs without any fear of being arrested.

Heroin addicts that did not take the alternative to heroin in order to get clean have been given prescriptions to receiver their daily dosages of heroine instead in an effort to “solve the problem”. The basis of this method in order for it to work is a method called “harm reduction” which means if you give these people their doses of heroin every day to keep them docile and comfortable, they are less likely to end up dead or selling themselves sexually or in other manners in order to purchase drugs.

One of the 26 men taking part in this program has said that it has helped him hold down a job, stay calm, and not waste time trying to find a way to get his next fix. However, the man also said that he needs this free heroin or else he will potentially break into somebody’s car or even worse.

This program has been described by Allen Schauffler, a Pacific Northwest Correspondent, that the program is essentially a form of blackmail as it essentially tells these people there is no way to get you off heroin, so lets give you more so that you are the “least dangerous drug addict you can be” said Schauffler.

There are however, people who object to this in the city rankings, as essentially the city is, for a lack of a better term, “putting a bullet in their head”, but just in a much nicer way.

Surviving the Shower

It seems counterintuitive that bathing yourself by essentially taking a simple shower and keeping yourself clean would indirectly cause one of the leading causes of death in the elderly population of our nation, falling.

The life expectancy for a healthy American man in his 70s is about 90. In order to achieve that life expectancy, it would take near 5,500 showers in order to get to that point. Slipping in the shower is about as high as a 1 in 1,000 chance which would equate to becoming crippled 5 times before reaching the age of 90.

This has been brought to the attentions of many the importance of being attentive to hazards that are low risk but are encountered frequently.

The author of the article, Jared Diamond, proposed a situation living in the forests of New Guinea, that adopting the bad habit of sleepign under trees whose odds of falling on you are only 1 in 1,000, you will be dead in a few years. Ever since his experience Diamond has adopted this attitude of being cautious towards everything he does on a daily basis like taking a simple shower.

According to studies, we exaggerate the risks of events that are beyond our control and we severely underestimate the risks of things we can control over something as simple as paying attention when hopping in the shower. In other words, remain alert to your own possible mistakes in every situation you encounter in your life, especially simple tasks with seemingly very low risk.

Eradicate. The word eradicate means to get destroy completely; put an end to. I feel like eradicating polio isn’t something that will be done anytime soon (at least in my lifetime). Putting an end to this disease would require immense cooperation from EVERY country in the world. My parents are from Nigeria and they tell me how corrupt and poorly funded the government is. The Nigerian government lacks the funds to complete such a task as eradicating a disease. If things were different over there this wouldn’t even be an issue. If their government had a stable health care system they would be able to properly issue vaccinations with no problem, which in turn would help in the fight to eradicate polio.

Clean Girls Get Sicker?

It seems counterintuitive to let children roll around in the dirt to ensure that they’re in good health, but research shows that children who are introduced to more germs as an infant are less likely to get allergies, asthma, or autoimmune disorders.

Today there is something known as the hygiene hypothesis, which states that little girls are expected to be cleaner than young boys. Boys are encouraged to go outside and play while girls are much less likely to play outdoors. This could explain why women are more likely to develop asthma and allergies than men.

That being said, allergies, asthma, and autoimmune disorders are increasing for both sexes across the North and West. If the hygiene hypothesis is correct, we are decreasing our exposure to germs as a whole.

It needs to be pointed out that even though we have learned so much about how we interact with bacteria, there is still so much we need to learn about the complexity of germs and how we are effected by them, for better or for worse.

Free Heroine to Battle Addiction

It would seem counterintuitive that addicts are being given free heroine, but Vancouver has been using this as a technique to control its heroine problem.

Drugs are smuggled into the city off of its ports, and is particularly popular in a part of Vancouver called “Downtown Eastside”. In an effort to tackle this problem, city officials have a safe zone call Insite where addicts are monitored by medical staff.

This safe zone is only offered to a handful of the worst addicts in Vancouver. Before Insite was put into effect, researchers were giving addicts alternative drugs as a way to treat heroine. This method worked from some, but those who were still struggling to kick their heroine habit now have it practically prescribed to them. Doctors call this ‘harm reduction’, saying that in a controlled environment they won’t be put in the desperate situations addicts often find themselves in.

Some see this as a form of blackmail, pointing out that addicts could claim they need more heroine and threaten to take a stranger’s money so they can go buy it somewhere else. People that work at rehabilitation centers in Vancouver reject this idea of a safe zone, saying that the city is killing these people more comfortably.

Gun Regulation

It seems counterintuitive that a mentally unstable person can be rejected from school, but is able to purchase a gun and ammunition with no questions asked. Anything that could cause harm to people is steadily monitored and tested, ensuring its safety. But it is not as much of a cautious process when it comes to buying a gun.

With more people dying from shootings, more people are buying guns to protect themselves. There is evidence that disproves that families are safer with guns in their homes.

States with more gun owners have higher suicide and murder rates simply because the weapon is already in the home. With the increase of guns in the home, children in America die from gun wounds than children in third-world countries.

To deal with this, it’s suggested that the government should restrict how many guns someone can purchase in a short period of time, which would reduce the number of gun purchases and gun trafficking. Other countries have taken more action in limiting gun purchases and have seen a significant decrease in firearm suicides and homicide rates.

Practice Opening – Capched

Polio is a disease that has been around since 1894. Due to the outbreak in 1952, tens of thousands of people had died from it. It became an epidemic and a vaccine has been found. Scientists would like to eradicate this disease but it will not go away 100 percent. There are a lot of people out there who have fears of the vaccination. Some people do not trust it at all. This is the case with a lot of vaccinations that are going on around the world. It’s just not possible to fully eradicate polio nor any disease out there.

On the brink of extinction, One man pushes to strip Polio from one of its last strongholds.

Polio, a disease that has left millions of children paralyzed, is on the verge of facing its extinction. However there are still a few places on Earth where we have yet to eliminate it. But today possibly marks the beginning of the end for polio’s hold over Nigeria. For Nigeria’s minister of state for health Muhammad Ali Pate aims to accomplish what has been failed time and time again for the past 25 years. To completely eradicate Polio from the country, and he is doing everything in his power to achieve this goal. From persuading boys on the streets of Kaduna North, to personally vaccinating kids in a nomadic community near the side of the road, Muhammad is determined. As he puts it ” There is science to polio eradication, But making it happen is art”

How would eradication of something work? To me this is such an interesting concept because I have not heard of something being eradicated in my lifetime. However we have to acknowledge that it has happened before. Small pox ravaged the globe, and it was eradicated. Polio affected millions for a large part of the 20th century, and now it is only prominentely located in some parts of the world. Now we have a new pandemic on our hands with Covid-19. Scientists created a vaccine in almost absurdly fast time and according to top health officials, all Americans who want the vaccine will have it by springtime. So does that mean covid will be eradicated then? No, because there is still the rest of the world who needs it.
