Polio will never fully be eradicated due to fear. The fear of the unknown vaccine and its effects. The people were never properly informed so the vaccines were surrounded by a lot of rumors and misinformation. They were scared it would harm their children or cause more problems like AIDS and infertility. Nigeria’s minister for state and health claimed, “there is a science to polio eradication” but the Global Polio Eradication Initiative spent $10 Billion as of 2014 trying to help eliminate the virus. Since it is truly up to the person if they want it or not, they try many different approaches to get the people to agree to the vaccine. With this comes those who are not willing to cooperate due to what they have heard about the vaccine.

This virus will never truly be eradicated because of the rumors of the vaccine being a political stunt and that it contains contaminates that would harm people. One contaminate that are rumored to be in the vaccine is “birth defect-causing substances,” according to Haruna Kait, a professor of pharmacy at Ahmadu Bello University. Another contaminate rumored to be in the vaccine is AIDS. According to Ibrahim Ahmad Aliyu, “Forceful oral polio vaccinations are an American-planned genocide against the Muslim populations in Nigeria.” With all of these rumors going around about the vaccine, it makes it almost impossible for the vaccination teams to help eradicate the virus.

Polio will never be eradicated due to the lack of knowledge surrounding the disease. For example, Bashar al- Assad, President of Syria, actually withheld vaccines against polio and other deadly diseases from his people. Polio mostly affects children younger than 5; having this disease leads to partial paralysis, and in severe cases, death. Outside of the United States, other countries do not crackdown on these diseases and viruses (such as polio and measles) as well, making leaving America while not vaccinated a risk to contract a deadly disease. Polio is contracted through the mouth, and is grown in the intestines. The virus is spread through fecal matter, making it common in countries where they do not practice good hygiene. On the other hand, the vaccine can be spread the same exact way. 95% of vaccine recipients will be protected from the disease for life off 3 simple doses. That 95% would be enough to eradicate the disease, but only if everyone was required to get the vaccine.

Distrust grew among the Nigerian people when vaccination teams attempted to provide them with the polio vaccine. Rumors spread that the vaccine was a corrupt political stunt and would riddle their population with AIDS and fertility conflicts. All efforts to eradicate polio were hindered by the overwhelming abundance of violence in this area. Not only was it difficult for the vaccination teams to distribute the vaccine, it was nearly impossible to see significant improvements in the population’s health, under such unfavorable conditions. Ranked 152 out of 187 countries by the Human Development Index, it’s no surprise that polio thrives, and will be extremely difficult to eradicate, in this havoc stricken environment.

The virus will not be fully eradicated with the current vaccination efforts until social justice issues are addressed. The mistrust of the American government is a barrier in the success of the vaccine. The Muslim religions strong beliefs makes them hesitant of the vaccination, and the violence and resistance from certain groups only furthers their hesitance. Forcing the vaccination is not completely effective and kids are still being missed when they are unable to convince the family. Until social disparities are addressed the vaccination efforts will meet resistance and mistrust will be prominent in the efforts failures.

The spread of Polio in Nigeria stems from a far deeper issue; the government’s distrust by its own people. Ranked by Transparency International as one of the most corrupt nations in the world, there is undoubtedly a disconnect between the citizens and their government. Because of this, uncorroborated statements of the Polio vaccine containing AIDS or infertility drugs as a method of reducing the Muslim population were enough to have all vaccination banned in four northern states. Although vaccination efforts remain strongly led by Muhammad Ali Pate, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Health, the country faces Islamic Insurgency attacks regularly in its Northern region preventing successful execution of these efforts. With these groups targeting schools, hospitals, and UN headquarters, the country appears to be stuck between two sides, with the children of the nation falling victim to both Polio and politics.

A lack of cooperation regarding vaccination will stop polio from being eradicated. In Nigeria, vaccination efforts were derailed by mere rumors. Anti-polio vaccination groups spread false information about vaccines containing AIDS or harmful drugs, creating resistance against vaccination. An uncooperative attitude also stems from the frustration felt by poor Nigerian communities who wonder why polio workers are helping with only one problem when many problems plague their lives. The opposition even took a violent turn when anti-vaccination terrorists attacked polio workers, killing ten. The failure to vaccinate all children in Nigeria that resulted from this resistance led to an outbreak across the Horn of Africa, solidifying the reality that despite the efforts being made, polio will never be eradicated.

Based on the happenings in Nigeria, it is clear to see that polio will never fully be eradicated from the world. The misleading and false rumors about the vaccination in Nigeria lead to conflict and many people deciding not to get vaccinated. Some of the rumors include that the vaccination can cause many diseases, including AIDS and HIV, and that it can cause infertility. Although Muhammad Ali Pate has been able to make some serious progress with the relatively low polio cases in Nigeria, the standing conflict over the vaccinations will never allow the case number to be zero.

A cut down on routine immunizations and visiting home would prove more effective. The article references that survivors of polio can better spread the message of the fatalities of the virus; they are a physical embodiment of its effects. People of Nigeria live in an environment filled with violence and corruption that manifests suspicion of vaccinator teams. They associate their distrust in higher officials like the government on those that want to help. Continuously trying to help is burdening families more. While it results in more people suffering from polio, families hearing others of their community speak about it would make them actively seek out the vaccine.

Practice Opening:

People are the Polio problem. Due to a rumor, Polio infection has gone from 6 localized places to having hundreds of children paralyzed. Local leaders in northern Nigeria had begun doubting the efforts of vaccinators stating, “that the vaccine contained HIV and anti-fertility agents.” (Prompt) As soon as the local news caught wind it was all downhill from there, and within a few short months, the polio campaign effort was halted. On top of this, the struggle to finally banish Polio is compounded by the major presence of Islamic insurgency groups that attack the relief efforts compounds, and hospitals daily. This hostile Nigerian environment and mistrust lead to a world-altering outbreak for the many in Nigeria.
