It seems counterintuitive that Apple had people eavesdropping on their friends’ phones while facetiming. Apple allowed that by having a design flaw or “Face Palm” bug that allowed callers to listen in before the person even answers the facetime call. 14 year old Grant Thompson and many others, was who encountered this weird security flaw, and his mother has tried to reach out to the apple software team, but only was told to create a developer account to be able to send a formal bug report. After more than a week,  Apple didn’t really jump to fix this bug. That being said, it only seems the company reacted after seeing a complaint on the apple fan site that went viral regarding the bug. Regardless of whether it is fixed or not, the fact that this even existed is so scary for people to understand since it really is a huge invasion of privacy. If the company really cared about this bug, don’t you think a big corporation should have caught this bug prior to it being released around the world? With that in mind, it really makes you wonder, what else don’t we know about these devices that the majority carry constantly.

It seems counterintuitive that dogs are adopted by the majority of people based on their looks. The golden retriever and Australian shepherd are perfect examples of this concept showing people ‘shop’ pets by cuteness instead of personality, or their ability to work. The golden retriever was really intended to be bred to hunt waterfowl, and the aussie was for herding. When people buy off looks instead of jobs, that can actually cause obesity and more underlying health issues since they are not working like they are intended to. The fact pound dogs are usually overlooked due to how most look rugged (and may act rugged based on past interactions) is a very sad reality people tend to ignore, leaving the dogs to die alone in kennels. Personally, I feel that if people actually really care about getting a dog, they would be more intrigued about the dogs in shelters in their hometowns that are usually dirt cheap in kennels that they practically give away, but the people would rather have the dogs sometimes poorly breed for looks (often inbred) with pretty eyes and a beautiful coat.

It seems counterintuitive that we park on the driveway, and drive on a parkway. The english language is one of the most difficult languages to learn because we have so many contradictions. Another example that makes your head hurt is that the word ‘inflammable’ meaning that something is flammable, regardless of the prefix ‘in’ implying ‘no, not’. Now that I got your brain gears grinding, let’s go back to the original statement. If the word ‘Driveway’ refers to the public being able to use this road to get to a building, why would we deem it to only being the little section of road next to our house? On the other hand, the ‘parkway’ implies “a broad landscaped highway”. When breaking down the physical words though, drive + way, or park + way, how could such words be flipped, yet make sense to the American public?

My hypothesis- profs22

  1. Mental health
  2. Mental health treatment should be taken seriously
  3. The treatment of mental health should be taken as seriously as physical health.
  4. If treatment for mental health was as easily available as treatment for physical health, it would significantly reduce the rates of suicide, depression, anxiety, etc.
  5. If medicine regarding mental health was as prioritized as treatment available for physical health it would significantly reduce the rate of suicides.
  6. Making drugs easier to obtain for mental health disorders, would significantly reduce the rates of suicide.

7. Requiring health insurance corporations to cover the cost of mental health treatments would make medication easier to access for people struggling with depression and dramatically reduce the rates of suicide.

My Hypothesis – cfriery

  1. Popularity of esports
  2. Popularity of esports vs. real sports
  3. The effect on real sports due to the popularity increase of esports
  4. Esports popularity will overshadow the popularity of real sports.
  5. Esports will be the downfall of real sports.
  6. The popularity of esports will be the downfall of real sports due to it’s accessibility, marketing schemes, partnerships, and through the gaming industries’ backing.

I feel as though for #6 I’m just listing points and that I could do better to word it in a more counterintuitive manner. If any of my other numbers are lacking in the process please let me know!

  1. The popularity of esports will be the downfall of real sports due to it’s accessibility, marketing schemes, partnerships, and through the gaming industries’ backing.
  2. Esports popularity will soar with ever-improving technology that will make real sports irrelevant.
  3. Virtual reality and esports appeal will combine with ever-evolving technologies to change our idea of real sports.
  4. Esports and cost-efficient VR tech will thrive off of its accessibility in the new modern era to provide the world with a new definition to the term “sports”.
  5. The vulnerability of the human body will lead to an esports and VR tech boom that challenges our convictions of real sports.
  6. Due to the human body’s fragility, modernity of technology and its advances (the term coined), “The Esports Boom,” will challenge the pillars of sports society to normalize esports.

I can probably word Part 6 better but I feel better about this now. I definitely need to go over it a bit more and nit-pick it but it’s definitely on its way.

*Esports will replace traditional sports and become virtual sport because of the worldwide concern for injury.*

Warmup/riddle:

  • spoke about skin color and where we assumed were their origins…point was that what you look like and your skin color is not an automatic giveaway as to where you’re from (Denzel and Charlie)
  • Does not like semicolons so… don’t use them in this class unless it’s correct

Discussion:

  • Writing is all argumentative
  • The opinions of authors are showcased to be in an argumentative form
  • Even stop signs are considered this because of command? *and diaries too*
  • Summaries are imperative. Important to get the meat of the subject without giving too many details or distorting the idea
  • summaries and arguments when it comes to writing go hand in hand but it is important to tell the difference
  • 3 parent baby: may only be accessible to wealthy families (counterintuitive nature)

“Is PTSD Contagious?”

It seems counterintuitive that someone who has not experienced any traumatic experience suffers through PTSD as much or more than someone who has. Caleb Vines was sent to Iraq twice, came back with PTSD and traumatic brain damage. Surprisingly tho, his wife, Brannon Vines suffers the same symptoms as he does where she is sound sensitive and gets distressed as if she were in a life threatening situation. Someone who has not dealt with something traumatic yet goes through the same symptoms contradicts the definition of what PTSD is. It’s possible though, and Brannon Vines is living prove of it.

Brannon Vines is not the only spouse of a war veteran to suffer through this strange phenomenon. There have been studies made that confirm that spouses of Israeli and Dutch veterans suffer through secondary traumatic stress, other studies confirming percentages close to forty percent. While it isn’t classified as PTSD, the same symptoms still apply and sometimes are worse by comparison, causing some to even commit suicide. It can be argued that it’s worse than PTSD, given that the person suffers through stress and abnormalities that are out of their control. As clinical psychologist, Robert Motta mentioned, trauma isn’t just caused by one’s internal conflicts, external forces contribute as well. Those who have suffered through trauma can also affect those around them.

While it doesn’t seem logical to say that those who haven’t gone through the devastations of war, professionals have concluded that it’s verifiable. The symptoms are there, and it’s something that affects these people’s daily lives. Mental illnesses and the classifications of them are to some degree still a gray area, there is still so much that is not known. It can be said though that one does not need to go through traumatic experiences to suffer through PTSD.

“Men Defining Rape: A History”

It seems counterintuitive that it is taught how immoral rape is yet for centuries, laws have been made that are in favor to rapists. It’s been established in society that rape is a serious and still ongoing issue yet news outlets don’t mention it as often and it seems to be more sensationalized in movies/tv-shows. Also, it’s important to note the amount of times the technicality of rape has been skewed throughout history, most of which, were men coincidentally.

The main issue with men being the ones to decide what is considered rape or not is that there is lack of tact for women who are the most common victims of rape. As early as 1780 BC, women were considered property and if a married woman was raped, she was considered an adulteress. Understandably this was in the era BC; however, less than a century ago, in the nineteen nineties, there were still laws claiming statutory rape wasn’t rape if the woman was “impure.” There were still debates on whether it’s rape if the woman conceived or not. According to English physician, Samuel Farr, a woman must feel pleasure or have an orgasm in order to conceive. This claim diminishes rape victims that have conceived, having to be under the suspicion of law officials who are supposed to help them.

If there was a genuine desire to decrease the amount of rape crimes, then why do law officials such as judges and state legislators make it difficult to speak out. They suspect any woman’s report of rape, questioning their state of consciousness and their history of sexual intercourse. For a delicate and serious matter, one would think they would be more supportive to these victims. Instead, they are helpless to a society that deems them to be deceitful.

“Ranking Cute Animals: A Stock Market Experiment”

It seems counterintuitive that people express an opinion they believe others will approve while contradicting their’ own is actually beneficial to them. If one is asked what they thought a certain group of people believed in, they would not go with what their own beliefs. Why don’t they go with their natural instinct? The stock market says to go against your natural instinct.

A study was conducted where about twelve thousand people were asked who they thought was the cutest animal and then who they thought others would think was the cutest. These people were split in two groups where they both answered one of the questions. Seventy-five percent guessed right but the other twenty-five percent picked different animals. The premise of the study was to emphasis an economic theory of Keynes: the stock market is like a beauty contest, you don’t say who you think is prettiest, you say who everyone else thinks is prettiest.

This ideology makes sense when it comes to wanting a new business to be successful. The whole premise of starting your own business was that you would be your own boss, make your own rules and provide any service you wish. In reality, one cannot be their own boss, they must look at the demand of that certain service. If there is no demand, then the service won’t sell. You still have to play into the rules of the market.

It’s been taught that one should be in control of their decisions and they should decide what is best without caring about others opinions. In the world of business, others opinions are vital to the success of a business. If you don’t give the people what they want, then you are merely left with natural instinct and no profit.

There Is More to Life Than Being Happy

It seems counterintuitive that happiness is not something that brings meaning to our lives. But according to Gallup, it’s not possible to be happy looking for happines instead of meaning and gives the example of Victor Frankl, the famous Jewish psychiatrist who survived Holocaust and author of ”Man’s search for meaning”. He also affirms that happines can’t be pursued, it must ensue. As it doesn’t help us find happines, this search may thwart it. During his years in Nazi camps, he could observe other arrested Jewish’s attitudes and behaviors. He also realized the things that kept him alive while being forced to work under Nazi soldiers without any visible and reasonable hope in the middle of the war.

Happiness is about feeling happy, being a taker rather than giver. The researchers from Stanford University summaries it saying ”If anything, pure happiness is linked to not helping others in need.”Evolutionary psychology says you feel happy when you satisfy your needs. Like animals, humans become happy when they get what they want. Yet, meaningful life is getting joy from giving to others. This is the difference between humans and animals, pursiut of meaning.

Clearly, the life’s meaning is not about being happy. Everything is made for us, incluiding feelings such as sadness, stress, anger. And meaning doesn’t come from stress free, extremely happy things.

Francine Prose Explores Anne Frank’s Literary Genius

It seems counterintuitive that a thirteen-year-old girl expresses herself like an author with experience. Anne Frank is one of the symbols of holocaust who lived in Holland and died in a nazi camp when she was 15. But as she was seen as survivor, her talent has not been recognized like she deserved.

Francine Prose realizes it after reading Anne’s diary again in 2005, keeping in her mind that Anne was only thirteen years old when she started writing it. Prose says it occurred to her that the greatest book ever written about a thirteen-year-old girl was Anne’s diary. Although some authors didn’t agree that her diary was a masterpiece for a young girl and most people saw it as a document, a proof of holocaust, Prose argues her talent as a writer.

It wasn’t just a diary because she wanted it to be read. After 1944, she went back and reviewed her diary, rewrote some parts. Beyond the diary, she comments about other stories that she wrote. She, for sure, wanted to be an author and would like to be considered an author. And her talent is unquestionable for a young girl who was obligated to go to Jewish school and hide for about two years.

Prozac: What’s Race Got to Do With It?

It seems counterintuitive that prescribed drugs may depend on people’s race. Yet, Azeen Groyashi’s article about prozac use and race shows us that your insurance or race may affect the quality of drugs that your doctor will prescribe.

According to a student from Washington State University, antidepressant use is rising and rate among hispanic and black patients from 1992-2008 were less than half that of white patients. David Sclar says that they don’t know the reason behind it, as people wouldn’t feel comfortable easily and because of that, it’s really hard to do a research that would offer reliable results.

While the government is trying to reduce the number of people without insurance and improve their life quality, it’s not acceptable to receive different treatment for similar conditions. Although we don’t know why, physicians are the first ones to be observed, because who prescribe drugs are physicians, and their guidelines should be updated if it’s needed.

Gun Regulation-

It is counterintuitive that a human being can walk into a sporting goods a purchase a gun as easy as 1,2,3. Fire arms are very serious and are not simply a toy. We have seen numerous acts of fire arms being misused in horrific acts of terrorism. Many of these acts have been done by people who have unstable mental issues and not the best backgrounds.

People die by illegal guns everyday and the government needs to put in more regulations to get these illegal guns off of the streets. New Jersey has very strict gun laws that require a gun license and a background check before you can legally buy a gun in New Jersey.

States with very loose gun laws must be regulated and taking under control by our government. They need to crack down on the number of guns one person can buy in a short period of time. If gun purchases are slowed down that would mean less guns people will have in their home or possession. Less guns means less deaths caused from the misuse of fire arms.

Ethics of Three Parent Baby-

It is counterintuitive that a baby can be produced by more than 2 people. Everyone from when they where born knew that they came from a mother and father, never would you think that a baby nowadays can have 3 parents.

The United Kingdom has been given the OK to go ahead and attempt these scientific assistance in pregnancy. The thing that worries me is when science tries to play God, we do not know the long term affects of this because it has never been done on a human. If this does become successful for a long time only the rich will have access to such treatments to allow for their babies to be healthy coming out at birth.

If you could pay to have your baby come out healthy as can be I’m sure anyone would but it will cost a lot of money and make a lot of people upset if they can’t pay to have their child be perfect. This is not a good situation and scientist shouldn’t play God.

How to Armor Planes-

It is counterintuitive that we improve things that do not necessarily need to be improved. when looking at a fighter plane you want to make the lightest and most dynamic plane, you don’t want to make a big heavy plane that can’t move quick. You want to look a where the most vulnerable spots a give those the most protection. It makes sense if the plane makes back with bullet holes in it and did not have any trouble then you don’t necessarily have to worry as much about that spot. You would want to armor up where the gas is located and where the ammunition is stored, those two areas can cause a plane to crash with just one bullet hitting it.

The goal to eradicate the poliovirus to some may seem like an intangible one. However, there are ways that we can come together to combat this disease. There are extremists on both sides to the situation. On one hand people say that the vaccine carries even more harmful diseases and the others saying that in order to eradicate the disease we need to take away the rights of human beings and force everyone to get a vaccine. If we properly inform everyone on the dangers of the poliovirus versus the vaccine itself, most certainly, more people would get the vaccine. This virus not only affects the children in Nigeria but also can spread and make the problem bigger. Now, the decision is yours.
