0:01 This ad starts off with a very up close view of a african american in black and gold religious clothing in nature with the sun setting behind the trees in the view. Looks like the person is praying with how their hands are facing palm up. The image of the first second looks like it was taken precisely and planned. Gives the person who is praying more sentimental effects. The clothing in the video looks to be a muslim outfit with the gold designs and the length. The angle of the camera has a glare on the person which is again done purposely to create a better and more cinematic look and feel. You can assume that the director is skilled and has been filming a lot to capture the sun behind the sun directly shining on the person. Maybe he was trying to show that the sun was like God shining the light on the person who is praying.

0:02 The 2nd second shows what looks to be a caucasian man based on his hand holding a rosary which is most often used to guide catholic in prayer. We can assume that he is catholic. The rosary has brown beads with the cross at the end gold with a silver Jesus Christ. The man looks to be in nature too but it isn’t clear. The director made the background unfocused so we focused on the man in the frame. The man is wearing blue denim jeans and a light blue shirt. The camera angle is zoomed in so I can’t really see if he is on his knees praying or sitting with his hands wrapped around the rosary. I think the director did that on purpose again so we focus on the rosary rather than everything.

0:03-0:06  The next second is a clear and focused frame of an african american praying on what looks like the edge of her bed. Appears to be in a gray room with white curtains that have blue and red designs. The camera view is also the same level as her makes it feel like you are in the room with the woman looking at her pray. She has her hands crossed, head bowed and eyes closed. She appears to have a gray sweater on. Reminds me of my mother and how she mostly likes to pray. The camera shot is very steady and focused, assuming that the director wants us to really look at the woman.

0:07-0:09  The screen went from the woman praying to a bright mustard yellow screen. Then the screen turned black and four words appeared in the same mustard yellow as the screen before. The words stated “Let’s get back to…”. I can assume that the director is about to make a change. He showed three people in individual shots in what looked like praying in three different ways and I think the director is going to switch to a bigger setting. I assume that the three people were praying solo because of Covid-19 and “Let’s get back to…” is referring to getting back to worshiping God in groups and in church or a mosque.

0:10 The next clip shows what looks like an african american family of four; a man, two women, one looks older and one looks younger and then a little kid. They are walking in front of a First Baptist Church and have church clothings in so I can assume they are going into service. The man has an all black suit on with the mafia looking hat. The older woman has a vibrant pink dress, holding what looks like a gold purse and big hat ones that look like they used to wear in the south a lot. The child appears to be wearing a pink shirt with a blue vest and blue denim jeans and he is blocking the other woman in the frame but she also has the same big hats that most african americans would wear in the south especially to church. The frame is very wide and captures a lot such as the trees in the back. It looks like it is spring and the trees are starting to spring and get their color. The sun is out and shining which is probably intentional to show that God is the light and the way through everything.

0:11-0:12 The next frame the camera zoomed in I can see that it is indeed a family. A father who has a goatee, a mother (who is wearing a white dress with black designs and a black and white hat) who are holding hands. Looks like a grandma holding the kid’s hand. The grandma and the kid appear to be smiling and having a conversation. The sun’s still shining on them as they appear to be walking into church.

0:13-16 The next frame appears to be a pastor african american male holding a bible waving at people. He looks to be standing in front of a church I would assume. He has a balck suit with a white clerical collar which is what most christian pastors wear. In the 14th second he is shaking someone’s hand who is walking into the church. Looks like two families walking into the First Baptist Church. I see another woman wearing a hat that most african americans would wear in the south so I am starting to assume that they are somewhere south. The man greeting the pastor also has a hat on which is also more common down south. Everyone looks to be in good spirits having fun and happy to be walking into church. In the 15th second I see the same family of four from before greeting the pastor. The little boy is giving the pastor a high five and the grandma just looks ecstatic to be going to church.

0:17-0:19 The 17th second shows an all black screen with another four words on it in the same mustard yellow form before. “Should I get it?” is shown on the screen. The director hasn’t quite stated what they should be getting but he wants to make it known by putting the color yellow and having the background color black, so it stands out. Then three words appear on the screen saying “Is it safe?” I can assume now that they are talking about the covid-19 vaccine and if it’s safe and if people should get it to hopefully protect themselves. The words on the screen start small and then appear as if it’s getting closer and closer to you. That seems intentional because the director wants to add a more dramatic effect on what he is showing. Then after “Is it safe?” “Should I wait?” appears next, so now I know that it is talking about the Covid-19 vaccine. The words just like the other start off small and get bigger as time goes on to make it look bigger drawing more attention to it.

0:20-0:23 The next clip shows an african american family of 8 (6 kids 2 parents). The shot isn’t directly eye level, it’s a little lower and you can see the sun shining on everyone. On the screen in white it says “It’s up to you” and under that it says “covid-19 vaccination”. I think the director used a african american family to try and get the african american community to know that it’s their choice to get vaccinated or not. There must be a lot of african americans not wanting to get vaccines because they are unsure about what is in it and everything.  The 21st second the camera focuses more on the family and moves closer. The other seconds of the ad is showing other families all african american smiling with the sun behind them still in their church clothes happily.

0:24-0:30 The last few seconds on this ad has a the bright mustard yellow background with back words that say “It’s up to you” under it says “Covid-19 vaccination” and says “Get the Facts” and then has a link GetVaccineAnswers.org so people can answer the questions they have.

Safe Storage Saves Lives

0:01: A young boy, probably around ten years old is walking down a hallway. The hallway is dark, and the light is shining from another room. The child appears to be waking towards the light source. On his left there seems to be a picture, but we are not able to see it. This boy seems like he will be the focus of this video.

0:02: He then proceeds to semi look behind him and we get a better idea what the child looks like. From looking at his hair, it is evident that the child is of African descent. The boy is looking back so that no one is watching him from behind. It is possible that he may be looking for someone or something.

0:03:  A young girl is shown in this shot. She appears to be laying on the floor on top of a green rug with many different designs. The girl is around the same age as the boy from the previous shot. She has long blonde hair and wearing purple socks with designs, pink pajama pants, a grey sweater with designs at the top. The little girl also appears to be playing on a phone or another device. The camera does not show the phone or what the girl is watching. The overall environment in this scene is bright and the opposite of what was shown with the boy. The girl appears to be happy and preoccupied while the boy in the first shot appears to be mischievous and looking for something that he should not be looking for. This is intended as it represents two different moods.

0:05: Another child is standing on a red, metal stool looking for something in a cupboard. Inside the cupboard, there are a few shelves that are shown in the clip. On second shelf from the bottom there is a designer bad as well as a few pillows. The overall lighting is darker than the last clip and lighter than the hallway the boy was in earlier. This serves as an in between. The girl with the blond hair is the purest and as the scenes get darker in tone, so do the personalities such as the boy from the first second of the video. Light from the outside is the main light source in this frame. Different ethnicities and types of families are represented in this ad because the message is common in all families of all walks of life.

0:09: In this frame, it turns out the green rug from earlier is a bed. We also see the blonde girl getting off the bed. We also see that the girl is with another child. From this angle, we do not know if the child is a boy or a girl. The producers of this commercial did this purposefully, so each person has their own personalities and differences.

0:11: We then see the boy again in this frame. He appears to be looking for something in a storage room or attic in the house. There are boxes and other items scattered throughout the room on the many shelves. The boy seems to be climbing shelves to get to a box at the topmost shelve. There is a flashlight providing light from across the room so that the boy could see in a dark room. It is possible that someone perhaps an adult is helping the boy in his search. We also get a better look at what the boy looks like from behind. He is wearing a striped shirt and jeans. At this point in the video, we do not know what the boy is looking for. All we know is that he is looking for something because the storage room is the only spot where the boy is searching.

0:14: Here, we see the child standing on the stool again still trying to reach something in the cupboard and as a result, we see some objects falling out of the cupboard. From the angle the commercial is being shot in this scene, we only see that a blanket, a few books, and board games fell out. Again, it is still unclear what the girl is looking for.

0:15: The two children are seen going under the bed, but it is unknown why they are doing so. Their feet are the only things that are shown in this frame. Are they hiding from something, or are they just playing around?

0:17: In this frame, we finally can see the face of the boy in the mirror. He appears to be in a bathroom. The bathroom has a mirror and a picture hanging up next to the boy. The boy is rolling up a towel in this scene but so far it is unclear what his motive is. It is likely that he found what he was looking for and is using the object in a towel to hide it so that no one will know. This is shown in the commercial to make the situation look more realistic and to persuade viewers.

0:20: The girl on the stool from earlier picks up a book from the pile that fell off the cupboard. Then she sees something and frame later, it is revealed to be gun. This is possibly the thing that she was looking for in the cupboard all along. Since the commercial is about gun safety, she intentionally was looking for the gun and it just accidently fell out of the cupboard and in plain sight for the girl to notice. Children are curious, if they do not know what something is, they figure it out for themselves.

0:23: The two children by the bed are playing dress up. The two kids are wearing cowboy hats and there is a rifle right next to them. It is not known if the rifle is real or not, but it is used as foreshadowing what will happened towards the end of the commercial.  There also is a board game next to them called “Solarquest” which is a game where you explore the planets throughout the solar system.

0:24:  The boy in the scene looks up as if he heard something. It is evident that a gun shot was fired and before the boy had time to react.

0:26:  The screen is black here and the words “Safe gun storage safes lives.” Referencing the two guns that were visible in the commercial and into the hands of young children. This commercial was created to point out the idea that it is important to keep guns away from children. All the children shown in this commercial represent that accidental shootings can happen anywhere no matter how the children are raised and how good the family seems to be. The message of this commercial is to persuade people that Children do not understand the danger of guns and should not be able to come anywhere near one.

0:28: Then, on the black screen it says, “End Family Fire” and “Make Your Home Safer at EndFamilyFire.com”. This refers to the scenario in the commercial when the children had guns without supervision or knowledge on how to use one.

A Daughter’s Protector

0:01- In the first second of the clip, there is a man hunched over at a desk with the left side of his body facing the camera. He is staring at a laptop and half of his face is visible to the audience. He looked stressed and tired, as if he was staring at the laptop for quite a long time. The man is dressed business casual, with a blue button up shirt and a pair of khakis. The director may have chosen for the man to wear this outfit to show that he is a white-collar worker. The man is young looking, he is probably around 30 years old.

The room he is in is dimly lit, only a lamp and the laptop screen are giving off light. The lamp is positioned directly next to the man on the right side of the desk, where it is not visible to the audience. Although it is not visible, the warm glow of the light creates a drowsy ambiance, indicating that it is not sunlight from a window. The room looks like a spare room that was turned into an office space, there are a couple of cups filled with writing utensils and a cork board with papers attached to it. Papers scattered around the desk, probably from the man’s job. The corkboard has a few pictures on it, with what looks like a man and a child. There are also a few children’s drawings on the cork board.

The door to the office is open and there is a children’s bicycle in front of the stairs, which are visible from the room. The stairs are going up, so the room the man is in must be on the first floor. The bike is pink, so it is most likely a little girl’s bike. His job must pay relatively well, since we see that he can afford to have a spare room, and it is safe to assume the house has at least two other rooms for himself and the little girl. There is no indication of whether this is taking place during the day or at night, but the dim light and lack of windows to bring in natural light make it seem like it is night time.

0:02- 0:15

Suddenly the man appears to have heard something and stares at a particular spot on the ceiling. The camera is at the same height as the man, so when he looks up, the audience cannot see where he is looking. He does not look confused or distressed by what he heard, so it is probably not something out of the ordinary for him. He then closes his laptop and lets out a sigh. As he gets up from his office chair, he hesitates for a moment and unplugs the chord from the laptop, then promptly walks out of the room to the stairs. He takes the laptop with him, so he may be planning to continue his work upstairs, where he heard the noise.

While this is happening, the camera slowly moves in towards one of the drawings on the cork board. The crayon or colored pencil drawing depicts a large, badly drawn dinosaur-like creature labeled, “monstruo” with two small stick figures labeled “papa” and “yo.” Before this moment, there was no appropriate indication of the man’s ethnicity, but now it is clear that he is latin. “Papa” seems to be fighting the monster, while the child who drew the picture is laying in a bed. The director chose to zoom in on this image to show that the daughter is troubled with thoughts of an imaginary monster hiding in her room, and to show the audience that the child feels safe and protected by her father.

0:16- 0:24 The clip cuts to a close-up shot of a small girl sleeping peacefully in bed, with her head resting on a pillow. Her face takes up most of the frame, and is shot from an angle slightly above her, so this angle is most likely representing her father’s point of view. Since her room is upstairs, she probably called for her father from his office to scare away the “monstruo” in her room. It then cuts to a view of the whole room from the doorway, with the camera slowly moving down.

The audience can now see the room fully. It is filled with toys and decorations, and the twin sized bed is placed in the middle of the room with the headboard against the left wall. On the wall opposite from the door, there are two windows, with long blue blinds covering them. None of the covers match the sheets or the pillowcases on her bed, and there is a unicorn stuffed animal at the end of the bed. The director may have chosen to have none of the bedding matches to suggest that they are a middle-class family, and do not care so much about everything looking perfect. As the camera zooms down, we see the man laying underneath the bed, working on his laptop. There is no sign that there is a mother around, so the father is learning to balance work and his child’s needs independently.

0:24- 0:37 By this point, it is clear that the video is addressed to fathers, and that this is not a commercial since the director is not trying to convince the audience to buy something. The words “never stop being a Dad” pop up in the middle of the screen. This is a PSA to fathers that they should always be there for their children, and to not let materialistic tasks like working at home get in the way of supporting their children.

Visual- Thecommoncase

0:01- In the first second of the advertisement, there is a man hunched over at a desk and looking at a laptop, which has a stack of papers next to it. The man is dressed business casual, with a blue button up shirt and a pair of khakis. The director may have chosen for the man to wear this outfit to show that he is a white-collar worker who may have recently gotten home from work. He looked stressed and tired, as if he was staring at the laptop for quite a long time. The room he is in is dimly lit, only a lamp and the laptop screen are giving off light. The lamp is positioned directly next to the man on the other side of the desk, where it is not visible to the audience. The warm glow of the light creates a drowsy ambiance. The room looks like a spare room that was turned into an office space, there are a couple of cups filled with writing utensils and a cork board with papers attached to it. The corkboard has a few pictures on it, with what looks like a man and a child. There are also a few children’s drawings on the cork board. The door to the office is open and there is a children’s bicycle in front of the stairs, which are visible from the room. The director is letting the audience know that this man has a child by showing the drawings, the pictures, and the small bike. There is no indication of whether this is taking place during the day or at night, but there is no light coming from the hallway outside the room, making it seem like it is night time.

0:02- 0:15 Suddenly the man appears to have heard something and looks up at the ceiling, where the audience cannot see. He seems to have heard someone calling him from up the next floor. He then closes his laptop and lets out a sigh. As he gets up from his office chair, he hesitates for a moment and unplugs the chord from the laptop, then promptly walks out of the room to the stairs.

While this is happening, the camera slowly moves in towards one of the drawings on the cork board. The drawing depicts a large dinosaur-looking creature labeled, “monstruo” with two small stick figures labeled “papa” and “yo.” “Papa” seems to be fighting the monster, while the child who drew the picture is laying in a bed. The director is focusing on this image to show the audience that the child feels safe and protected by her father, and that the father is there for his child whenever he is needed.

0:16- 0:24 The clip cuts to a close-up shot of a small girl sleeping peacefully. It then cuts to a view of the whole room, with the camera slowly moving down. The room is filled with toys and decorations, and the bed is placed in the middle of the room in front of two windows, with long blue blinds covering them. The director may have chosen to have none of the bedding match to suggest that they are a middle-class family, and do not care so much about everything looking perfect. To the audience this is pretty relatable, since most people do not have the time to constantly make everything perfect. As the camera zooms down, we see the man laying underneath the bed, working on his laptop. This ties in with the drawing seen before, and shows that the father is achieving work-life balance by stopping his daughter from being scared of monsters under her bed while also getting work done. He does not let his work get in the way of taking care of his daughter.

0:24- 0:37 At the end, the meaning of the advertisement becomes clear. The words “never stop being a Dad” pop up in the middle of the screen. This is a PSA to fathers that they should always be there for their children, and to not let materialistic tasks like working at home get in the way of supporting their children.

Fundamental Trust Needed

Since 2016, the term “Fake news” gained prominence in the United States. A big part of Donald Trump’s strategy for his campaign was trying to pull followers from people who felt disenfranchized from the last administration. Maybe the largest message of his was that the media was lying to these people and trying to silence them. This has been proven false, but the argument was so compelling that it gained a ton of traction, and slowly but surely gaine Trump enough supporters (in key areas, as he lost the popular vote) to win the election and become the 45th President. For the next four years, he continued to drive his narrative of fake news. He used Twitter so he could reach the public directly, and not have his messages skewed through a giant news network. This strategy cause a larger divide down the political aisle than we have seen in decades.

The left and right have never been farther apart, and a large part of it is how the sides consume their news and media. In an age of social media ruling the world, less of the younger generations are sitting down and watching news networks, which older generations still tend to do. The problem is, people on both sides only consume the media they want to hear, or that which fits their narrative. The left largely following sources such as CNN and MSNBC, and the right going with Fox News and for the past four years, reading Trump’s twitter feed. Because too many people are seeing only seeing biased media, they are not getting a real picture of what is really happening. This divide in our country happened in large part due to the fact that a lot of citizens feel that they can’t trust the media as a whole. In the long run, a huge step (not they only step) towards healing this political divide is to regain public trust in the media.

Although this has been amplified in the past four to five years, the problem has been their for a long time. In 2000, Daniel Sutter wrote a piece on media bias, and he cited that, “The documentation of media bias has become something of a cottage industry since Edith Efron’s (1971) pioneering study.” He also wrote about how the myth that all media is liberally biased is pretty much false. His claim is that while there really is not a way to specifically see is the media leans one way or another, you can see where these news networks come from, and base claims from there. This is a good point because when you look at the most popular news giants, they come from even larger coroporations. CNN is owned by the Turner Broadcasting System (TBS) and Fox News comes from the Fox Corporation. In all likelyhood, these corporations are telling these news networks what to put on air and on social media, because they know if they pander to one side or the other, then they will make more money off of all of the views they are getting.

At the start of the decade, we had a Democratic president in Barack Obama. A lot of people say that Obama helped the Trump campaign in the long run because he did not do enough for people in rural little populated areas. While those areas are not populated a ton on their own, all together they form a mass. With most of these areas and states being right leaning, it is interesting to see how they percieve the media. Of course contrasting them against people in maybe a more urban, left leaning population. In 2017, a study was done in Wisconsin, where adults came forward with different “politically devisive” events that they had seen since 2011. In that time, Obama being the president for the majority of it. There were apparently “self- reported patterns of selective exposure to partisan media while accounting for the role of local communication ecology in encouraging or discouraging partisan media selectivity,” according to Mathew Barnidge. This goes to show at least on one side, people are choosing to only listen to one outlet, and that they are encouraged to do so by others around them. One might even go as far as to say that they might be proud of this fact, since this all came self reported.

Media bias is not just a topic local to the United States. The Comparative National Election Project did a survey of 17 different countries. They found that “results (showed) evidence of overall positive relationship between percieved media bias and political action, and they also show evidence that this relationship varies in strength between countries,” according to Mathew Barnidge. It is evident that media bias occurs elswhere, but it does not seem to beek taken as harshly as it is here in the United States. This might also be backed by legitamet freedom of press in those countries. In the United States free speech is of course a right that we Americans hold dear. But this goes back to a previous point of larger companies controlling the media, which just profit off of the people looking for information. This point can then be used as an example in the much larger topic of how much corporations and the one percent control the rest of the American citizens. All in all, media bias in other countries is not as relavent as it is here in the United States because people are not “gas lighting” the situation like they are here.

Media bias cannot be solved in an instant, it cannnot even be solved relatively soon. but it is one of the nation’s biggest problems because it is a doorway to a whole other world of issues. People only consuming one side of things have grown from angry to livid at the other side, which would then lead to electing politicians looking to profit for their own gain off of the anger of people they claim to represent. They will only push the divide even further once they are elected, and only worsen the issue. If Americans learned to trust the media as a whole again, and not just their preference, than we would be much more united than we have been for the past four or five years, and are now.

Politically motivated Selective Exposure and Percieved Media Bias

They way people consume media now, they’re basically expecting it to be biased one way or another. This asks the question, how would be benefit from the media in genreal if there was a positive perception surrounding it? A surevey was conducted in Wisconsin where people submitted their own accounts of recieving biased media. They discussed how they felt politically driven stories since 2011 have had an affect on how they view media.

The article says that the general percepion of the media is that it is biased, but self selected media isn’t. This speaks to why Americans have tried to branch out and find other, non- mainstream, news sources.

The Wisconsin study also found that there were opposite patterns of media bias and selective media. This shows that the trust in the media had been lacking and only grew more divided since that point.

Comparative and Corrective Action: Percieved Media Bias and Political Action in 17 Countries

In this article, people in some cases have been known to act out in vvarious ways against the media, if they find that the media is biased against them. There was a Comparative National Election project which gathered data from 17 countries. The evidence showed a positive and trusting relaitionship between people and political action when it comes to media bias. This evidence does vary from country to country.

The results of this experiment can be used to show how effective freedome of the press has been in other countries, as well as trends in political action across the world.

You Are Fake News: Political bias in Perceptions of Fake News

This article dives deep into the term “fake news” itself and describes how harmful the concept can be. The author discusses how much the term grew in regular dialogue since 2016, largely due to the Trump campaign. A national survey was conducted and the consensus seemed to be that most fake news was presented to the public by way of the biggest news corporations; Fox News and CNN. The study also showed that conservatives were the group who used the word more often. This was driectly lnked to a lower trust in media overall, as well as more support for Trump.

Changes in the Perception of Meida Bias

This article takes a close look at how people started to view bias in media differentely following the 2016 election. One conclusion of research in this area was that percieved media bias was something that caused Hillary Clinton to lose the election. The effects of media bias seemed to vary based on how much attention people payed to the campaigns. In the end, it appeared that strong Democrats and more independent Republicans.

Infulence of News Media Bias on American Perspective of White Supremacy

This article takes a close look at the close relaitionship between how we view certain examples of white supremacy and neo- naziism because the media steers away from those subjects. They highlight the other side of that, how people practicing the religion of Islam were vastly targeted after 9/11, and the media covered that largely. The whole people was labled by a threat in the eyes of the media, and that was almost 20 years ago. Now when White Supremacy is still very much active, the media doesn’t put the heat on it like it should.

Mental Illness Through Therapy

There are many ways of noticing that someone is experiencing mental illness other than simply stating the fact. The term therapy is often understood as talking out your feelings to a professional therapist which leads to a possible diagnosis. This is not the case, however, where there are many outlets that one can express what they are going through. One example of this is music therapy. Through this kind of treatment, psychologists are able to find whether or not a patient is experiencing some type of mental illness through this artistic form of expression.

With this type of therapy, one is able to analyze the type of music created to understand an artist’s self-concept and rehabilitative needs. Further, one is able to see those issues in the lyrics of their music. By examining an artist’s work, a professional is able to notice psychological and developmental processes where they may have not been able to notice in other ways. Because of this, there are great benefits for the artists combining analytic approaches of song analysis with an experiential, arts-based investigation.

As stated by the AMTA, “Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.” Not only is music therapy beneficial for the clinician to better understand their patient, it is also helpful for the patient to let go of these emotions as well as receiving the help they need at the same time. Music therapy is especially advantageous for those who experience issues with communication. Activities that are included in such treatment are singing, dancing, creating music, or by listening to music. By doing so, patients are able to express their feelings in a creative and entertaining way.

Music being understood as having healing abilities is not news and has been used as such since the times of Aristotle. However, the first official documented practice of using music for therapy was in 1789 through “Music Physically Considered,” an article in Columbian Magazine. Further, throughout the 1900s this practice gained popularity where there were multiple programs introduced. In 1903, the National Society of Musical Therapeutics was founded by Eva Augusta Vescelius. Next, in 1926, the National Association for Music in Hospitals was founded by Isa Maud Ilsen. Another, in 1941, the National Foundation of Music Therapy was founded by Harriet Ayer Seymour. Considering music therapy as an organized clinical profession truly began in the 1940s. Flash forward to today, there are around 5,000 certified music therapists in the United States.

There is a common link between creativity and mental illness. Many songs reflect the type of life an artist has. Further, one’s mental health is a significant part in one’s life. Therefore, it is more than likely that if an artist suffers from some type of mental illness, it will show in the songwriting of those artists. Meg Hutchinson describes her experience with mental illness and how it affects her music. Hutchinson suffers from bipolar disorder. She explains how in her song, “The Living Side” she expresses how she promises to stay on the living side. This proves that mental illness is commonly displayed in the lyrics of their music.

There are many songs with dark lyrics that are a result of the artist having mental illness. Eminem suffers from depression and his song, “Stan”, writes “You coulda rescued me from drowning / now it’s too late, I’m on a thousand downers now, I’m drowsy / and all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call.” Another by Eminem, “Rock Bottom” writes “My life is full of empty promises and broken dreams / I’m hopin’ things look up; but there ain’t no job openings / I feel discouraged, hungry and malnourished” Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day suffers from panic disorder and his band’s song, “Basket Case,” writes “Sometimes I give myself the creeps / sometimes my mind plays tricks on me / it all keeps adding up I think I’m cracking up / am I just paranoid or am I just stoned?” Morrissey of The Smiths suffers from depression and his band’s song, “I know It’s Over” writes “Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head.” All of these songs demonstrate how mental illness affects and is apparent in the lyrics of those artists who are suffering.

Another example is an artist with the name of X. Ari. She is a singer-songwriter and suffers from anxiety, depression, PTSD, and insomnia. Some lyrics she has created include, “There was no dim light at the end of the tunnel and every part of my being thought this was the end. If I only knew that so many people have similar struggles, I would not have felt so alone. Perhaps I would been able to recover sooner had I not been so ashamed.” As you can see here, she is openly discussing her mental illness in this song. This is an example of lyrics that describe the current state of their lives. There isn’t much digging needed to find examples of some sort of mental illness here. However, this is a good example of how music is used as an outlet for mental illness and has a significant impact on the lyrics created. Also, this just shows that not only was she able to express her feelings, she is acting as a real life example of someone who has effectively used music as more than just a leisure activity.

Emotional expression includes but is not limited to regular one on one conversation and that is something that must be understood. Today, more than ever, people are experiencing mental illness at alarming rates. For those who do need assistance, they should be aware of the many resources available that can help their given situation. Many are reluctant or apprehensive about classic verbal therapy which stops them from getting the help they need. Music therapy is surely a more appealing type of treatment and if more people knew that this is an option, it can save the lives of those suffering.

Definition Rewrite – KobeBryant

Online learning has taken the world by storm. Since the pandemic hit, it has been harder for most people to go to school and feel safe in school. Corona Virus has been viewed as one of the deadliest viruses to touch earth and since then, schooling has been online. Online school has its ups and downs , but being optimistic and upbeat is what gets you through tough times. People often say that online school is much easier because you can cheat and what not, and some people say that it is harder because some people need to be in school. Regardless of the opinions, online school is a thing and people need to realize that it is happening.

Online school has its pros and cons. One of the pros being that you are in the comfort of your own home , receiving high quality education from decorated professors. Your knowledge will progress and there’s no way that your knowledge stays stagnant unless of course you allow it to be. Being at home makes you feel less stressed and much more at ease. Opposed to being in school when you have to wake up much earlier and end up staying in school for a long time. A lot of people work better when they are at home. Comfort can be a double edged sword, it can either work for you or against you. Another pro is that Online schooling provides asynchronous learning. Meaning that you can take class at your own pace. So let’s say for instance you are having a not so fabulous day. You can hold off on class for that day and pick up on it the next day. Universities and high schools also provide recorded lectures as well so you can always catch up on what was lost. In regular school if you missed a day, you had to copy some subpar notes from your buddy that barely pays attention in class. Online school also allows you to log on to class no matter where you are at.

Online school also has its cons. Online school is said to lack the “real learning experience”, i’m talking, chalkboard and textbooks. It isn’t the same because kids aren’t required to keep their cameras on so they are most likely just laying down in bed while logged into class. Which isn’t necessarily what you’d be doing if you were in class. I feel like online learning also kills your social skills because you are interacting much less than you normally would. Mainly because you are sitting behind your computer all day long and not necessarily talking that much. Online school has kids staying up all night as well, I feel as though the workload increases mainly because we are not in school. It’s kind of a way to try to compensate for the fact that we are in the comfort of our own homes.

Nothing will ever be able to replace regular school because there is nothing that can replicate a classroom. Although online classes have proven to help people get smarter and much more versatile. The learning style is very different. Some people are better in the classroom than others and vice versa. It all depends on your preference at the end of the day. Learning styles and presences differ depending on the person. Statistics show that kids are getting more stressed at home than they were in school, this is a result of someone who doesn’t agree with online learning.

Being in school gives you a sense of urgency and responsibility. You aren’t as likely to procrastinate and you end up having a much better time when you have a consistent schedule. That is an important aspect of being in school, is the responsibility you have. It isn’t easy to always wake up early and go to school everyday but it pays off when you know that you are getting 100% of what is there. Online schooling is what will be going on for a very long time until this virus is under control. So it is better that we get use to it because I’ll most likely graduate with online school still being an option.
