It’s impossible to eradicate Polio if we don’t work on other issues that indirectly affect its spread in Nigeria. Nigeria has the largest extreme poverty population. More than 89 people are living below the poverty line. Although the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals focus on no poverty in Nigeria, there is no visible improvement. The country is known by its government’s corruption, which doesn’t help Nigerian people trust their officials. Education is another problem that has to be solved in order to facilitate vaccine’s application. Even in the most educated countries, some people don’t believe the prevention that vaccines provide, and in Nigeria one-third of children are never enrolled in school. Ending Polio through vaccines is not a reasonable expectation before finding a solution for all these problems.

Strategies to end Polio will never work until trust in vaccines is gained. The world is close to eradicating Polio, and Nigeria still remains as one of the few hot spots left with Polio. Polio cases hit an all time low in 2006, however many of the Nigerian population have suspicions about the vaccine. Some populations believe the vaccine has the AIDS virus or drugs preventing fertility. Some also believe that the virus is a western plan to eradicate the Muslim population. With misconceptions like these Nigerians may be opposed to taking the vaccine.

The eradication of polio seems near impossible after countless attempts to defeat it. Over the years polio continues to diminish down to a minuscule amount of cases, to the point where one would think that the disease’s reign of terror is over. But the people of Nigeria should not continue to get there hopes up. Due to the lack of trust between citizens and government the cases continue to spike. Even though there is a vaccine for the virus it was found to contain AIDS and other harmful drugs. This then led to the vaccination being banned leading to an increase in polio cases yet again. It is an endless cycle of highs and lows of polio. The only way that polio can be eradicated is if the citizens of Nigeria fight their deep rooted issues and come together as a community to create a system of trust for the greater good of all.

Caccine-derived polio spreads in Africa after defeat of wild virus. There has been a new polio outbreak in Sudan that has been linked to oral polio vaccine. The virus will never be truly gone due to the rumors of the vaccine being a political stunt that it contains contaminates that would hurt people. The lack of knowledge of this disease shows us that it will never be eradicated. The virus spreads through fecal matter to the mouth and into the intestines. There are rumors that the vaccine can cause diseases such as HIV and AIDS.

To get rid of Poliovirus we may need to take away personal rights. As wrong as that sounds, to get rid of this once and for all everyone needs to be vaccinated. No excuses. This may not seem as big as a deal to Americans anymore, but third world countries still see cases of this disease year in and year out. This is a global effort to completely wipe out the virus as a whole, and some counties, such as Nigeria, refuse to comply. People forget, that before a vaccine, there were more than 15,000 cases of paralysis in the United States in a single year. It only takes one outbreak. Did you get your child vaccinated?

The social issues and lack of trust that surround the Nigerian people, make it almost impossible to see the end of polio. Nigeria is ranked one of the more corrupt countries in the world according to The Human Development Index. Disease, violence, and terrorism filled this country for many years. With all of this being said, there is little trust between the patrons and their government. A polio vaccine has frequently been offered out but has denied several times due to fear that it causes HIV, AIDS, and possibly infertility. Based on these false suspicions, cases of polio only climbed higher and continue to exist. Due to the lack of people willing to cooperate and take precautions to become vaccinated, it is safe to assume polio will continue to be present in this part of the world much longer than anticipated.

Eradication of the Polio disease seems so close, yet so far away. In recent years, through the support of numerous organizations worldwide, Nigeria, the leading country in Polio cases, has been able to bring their number of cases down to all-time lows. This sounds promising but the deeper you look into it, the more hopeless the eradication of polio in Nigeria seems to become. It is all due to the deep rooted distrust in the country’s corrupt government. According to Transparency International, Nigeria is placed among one of the more corrupt countries in the world. That is why when rumors started that the vaccine carried containments such as the AIDS virus, some northern states banned the vaccine causing a skyrocket in cases in the following years. If the trust of the Nigerians is not regained, the country will never be rid of Polio and if Nigeria is never free of the disease, the whole world will never be as well.

The eradication of Polio will not be able to happen until other deep rooted issues are resolved in Nigeria. Over half of the population of Nigeria is living in grinding poverty, most with no access to clean water or even toilets. Nigeria is ranked 152nd out of 187 countries on the Human Development Index and it all seems to stem from a major issue between the government and the poor, who believe their government abandoned them. This leaves the Nigerian people skeptic whenever vaccination teams make attempts to rid the people and their children of Polio. Rumors roam about the people on how the vaccination is contaminated with AIDS or infertility drugs, leading to the Nigerians refusal. Nigeria is the only country in the world with all three types of Polio still circulating yearly with an abysmal vaccination rate of 13%. There is less than 1% of the population with the virus globally and Nigeria is a big stepping stone to reach that final goal. Each year, Nigeria shows the most cases out of any other country in the world still active with Polio and will continue to be unless a change is made.

With an increasingly cynical world, the task of eliminating polio is nearly impossible without a global scientific authority. Recent events like the COVID-19 pandemic have sown distrust between major nations – such as the U.S. and China. Examining the 1970’s, aggressive local and WHO efforts allowed for  total eradication of smallpox. This was only possible with global cooperation. Yet while polio may be low in numbers, a coordinated and cooperative plan for total eradication is, unlike with smallpox, currently unattainable. A rise in nationalism and anti-vaccination has deepened distrust between nations and their scientists while stunting efforts for polio eradication.

The eradication of polio internationally is a dream that can become a reality if it was not for the lack of understanding of potential vaccination outcomes. With the assistance of many humanitarian organizations, the majority of the world has been successful in decreasing the rate of polio cases within the past thirty-two years; however, their progress can potentially be in ineffective because of doubts created by human worries such as vaccine contamination and other pressing issues in the community. The conversation revolving around the vaccine for polio has brought upon a widespread of fear and suspicion of its proposed effects. In addition, civilians suffering from poverty have indicated their uncomforting feelings and began to question the idea of the need to get vaccinated based on personal beliefs. As a result, Nigeria has become an epi-center of ongoing polio outbreaks; thus, becoming an obstacle for the world’s mission to eradicating polio.
