Stand Your Ground is a law that states someone is allowed kill someone else in self-defense and can create a culture of violence. Under the “shoot first” laws, a person can engage in violent behavior in the name of self-defense and basically have a license to kill. When citizens have everyday conflicts, like road rage, neighborly disputes, or suspicion of other races, they’re allowed to resolve them with guns. It’s definitely going to lead to more killing because the “self-defense” excuse is easy to use. These laws have increase the number of murders in Florida because “justifiable” killings have tripled since the Stand Your Ground law passed in 2005. When a person is allowed to take the law into his or her own hands, the people’s rights often get trampled.

Don’t think that it won’t affect you; people are less safe when they’re not sure whether their neighbors are packing heat. There’s already more social unrest than ever before, and it’s only going to get worse if a greater number of similar laws get passed. Laws like “Stand Your Ground” increase the risk of innocent people to get shot. In short, Stand Your Ground is a law that creates more trouble than it’s worth. Repealing the law will show people respect the citizens’ lives more than the criminals’.
