Writing Technique Importance

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.
https://rucomp2.com/2019/04/18/casual-rewrite-chavanillo/

This value is important because it gives you away to find information and be open with your writing and sharing it with other people. Like peers, instructor, tutors, friends, etc. For example, in one of my assignment I was assigned to write an essay about teens being obsesses with sneakers. So, what I did was that I started looking for professional articles of how obsession with sneakers are good and bad for teens. Articles by Beth Harpaz, The Family Circle a parent’s clubs website analysis, Marc Bain, Sandra Miller, Chittenden T; Kevin Smith, Elliot R. and Leonard C. They all see different perspective on how sneaker obsession is impacting teenage lives. This professional help me come up with the idea if my hypothesis, obsession with sneaker is problematic or not. I use different kind of research to conclude if I was correct or wrong.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.
https://wordpress.com/block-editor/post/rucomp2.com/4713

This is important because it gives you the opportunity to understand something better and be curious. Also, this core value lets you critique and analyze what the text is talking about and going deeper in interpreting and understanding the text. With this you could evaluate and expand your thinking and having strategies. For example, when I was doing my purposeful summaries first I looked at other ones for reference and to have an idea on what to do, but what really help me was that I wasn’t just observing I was searching for those inner words that really defines how you interpret the article. It helps me understand it in a way like if it’s my own analysis. By doing this you develop a sense of thinking outside the box. It also gives you the opportunity to understand and acknowledge your own unique ideas and thinking. It could help you have a stronger and unique paper.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.
https://wordpress.com/block-editor/post/rucomp2.com/4803

It helps you analyze choices and strategies from other authors. It also creates an effective text of your own. For example. In one of my assignments in class I had to select a video and write about the rhetorical situation (audience, purpose, and context). The video I selected was called “Alone: by an Ad Council.  The purpose of this video was to inform soldiers that they are not alone, and we are here to help them. This video where speaking to everyone to help each other for everyone to fill welcome. You know how many soldiers die for saving the country? The minimum thing we could do is help them. What people might be worrying about is if the soldier has a trauma is considered as a dangerous person. This core value helps us understand the point of a text, video, article, etc. Also, helps you develop an understanding of the massage it’s trying to give and at the same time thinking about everyone when it comes to making decisions. This gave me a better understanding on what I should focus on. This helped me think about the word “Why”.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.
https://rucomp2.com/2019/04/01/rebuttal-chavanillo/

This helps us expand ourselves from our own ideas and thinking and incorporating other people point of views and acknowledgements. This core value helps us find and evaluate sources to illustrate, explain, and find ideas for your writing. It gives us the opportunity to open our mind to other people’s ideas. For example, in my rebuttal essay I talked about how teens obsession with sneakers has become problematic. One of the articles I use was Kevin Smith. I was against him that sneaker obsession is good for teens these days. So, what I did was that I am weakening Kevin Smith argument by looking for other sources. Apart from my own personal thinking I research what other people think about Smith argument and more points or facts about why he is wrong. By putting this core value into action, we could develop a mindset that not only our own ideas count but other people too and it also help us find evidence that support your idea. Also, this core value improves my assignment by giving me more information about why Smith was wrong and because of this it expands my way of thinking to always referred to other people point of view for a more trustworthy understanding.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.
https://rucomp2.com/2019/04/01/rebuttal-chavanillo/

With this core value it could help you to not plagiarize. This gives you the opportunity to read another author’s text and listing to them. Also using their text as evidence but in quotation. So, writers must develop a skill to be able to locate and analyze what source they used. For example, I accomplish this value on my one of my assignment that it was called white paper. I took every source I used during the semester and I purposely summarize each source. Instead on just writing what the author tries to say in the article, I instead summarize the article by my understanding in my own thinking and words. Not only I used my personal point but other articles to support my idea. Quoting other authors ideas and evidence make readers want to read more of your writing because they rust you. It gives me the opportunity to expand my thinking to the next level by using other sources.

Rebuttal- G90

With any economic policy there will always be opposition. As long as any sentient being exists there will always be opposition and conflict. Opposition to a Universal Basic Income (UBI) is no different when it comes to the U.S political machine. Republicans will say its too expensive and that handouts don’t work, while the democrats won’t support it in fear of losing their base and the next election cycle. This system for the U.S political machine is a large problem for the everyone within the U.S. Republicans can get their bills and laws pushed through while democrats can’t get much done on a federal level. A UBI would be no different if it entered the congressional floor, but taking a look at the capitalistic arguments against a UBI one can see the flaws within their points.

One of the first arguments against a UBI is that it’s too expensive. This is true funding a UBI would require a raise in taxes and a rise in the U.S deficit, however this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. A raise in the U.S deficit can in many ways be beneficial. Many countries invest money and provide loans that make up the U.S deficit. Those countries want the best in the U.S as if the U.S defaults on these loans then the other countries will lose money on their investment. This is what keeps the U.S and many countries at peace and afloat. Most countries have invested within the debts of other countries. This encourages trade as a prosperous economy increases the purchasing power of that economies currency. This, in turn, increases the worth of the loan held by the foreign country. This enclosed system is one of the best ways of keeping peace. You wouldn’t want to attack a country that holds a lot of your loans. That would be a loss for you. So claiming that a UBI would be expensive is very true, but this does not mean that it wouldn’t be worth it for the betterment of humanity. This is the fundamental flaw within republican ideology. This tunnel vision on the idea of the individual is extremely toxic for anyone thats not in the upper middle class or beyond. You can’t pull yourself up by your bootstraps if you’re living paycheck to paycheck. It is unrealistic to believe that will ever be possible.

Another talking points that those along the capitalistic thought process is that a UBI is a handout rather than an incentive. This a strawman plain and simple. A UBI is never meant to be a permanent solution for a permanent future. No one can predict how the future will turn out. This is impossible. If we look to what was predicted for today one hundred years ago everyone would laugh. A whale bus for underwater travel is ridiculous in the lense of today. If you look at a UBI in what studies have been conducted you can see that this isn’t enough money to live off of. The ideology behind a UBI is to allow for more economic freedom within a changing landscape with the rise of automation. Most participants in these studies anyway are also on welfare programs. To keep taxes lowered it would be logical to change where taxes are spent. Whether that be taking from the military and/or welfare programs a change in spending would be made. A UBI is a complex issue to just write off as a handout especially when it isn’t meant to be a handout. It is meant to allow for the economic freedom to better themselves. If you look at the trial in Canada that was cut due to regime change you can see just how little they were actually getting. Participants received $12,600 to live on in a year. Now yes you could live off of $12,600, but the life that you would have would be disingenuous. You would be just living above the poverty line. To maintain a healthy life would be impossible to achieve. This money is just a cushion. Not to live off of, but to allow for the creation of mistakes in economic ventures. The strawman built by those of the capitalistic mindset would be impossible given the current economic system.

The final point to be brought up is that welfare, as it is right now, isn’t going anywhere and this is the strongest of the three points. With automation on the rise the biggest challenge to solve is the older population. The older population will have a harder time adapting to the new economic landscape. Specialization training into fields such as computer science and many public service jobs are extremely difficult and mentally taxing. For a large part of the trucking business the truckers don’t have high school diplomas. This is a large obstacle to overcome and a UBI would not solve this. This isn’t what a UBI was meant for and these obstacles won’t be easy to defeat. This is what the future holds in store for us. These challenges will be the forefront of policy making in the given future. There are solutions to these problems however. One could be that we halt the technological advancement of mankind and this is unlikely. Doing so would require state violence and this would not be put up with. The most likely situation would be for some people would fall through the cracks while politicians try to figure out what to do to fix it.

With all these we can only see that one has any real merit. How to solve that problem will require great effort and sacrifice. Whether that be moving towards a more socialistic/communistic economic system or the halt of technological advancement we won’t know. Only the future can provide answers as we move towards further automation. Although a UBI isn’t a permanent fix it is a great step towards the imminent future. The sands of time stop for no one.

Annotated Bibliography-nousernamefound1

A Secret About Ivy League Schools: They’re More Affordable Than You Think. (n.d.). Retrieved from https://www.niche.com/blog/think-ivy-league-schools-are-too-expensive-tuition-is-discounted-more-than-you-think

Background: The author has collected and analyzed on how some of the top schools are often more affordable than lower schools. The author seen a problem with the cost of attendance for a lot of schools. Ivy League Schools should not cost less than a non Ivy League School. The author believes that the price should be cheaper because no other schools can compare to a Ivy League school.

How I Used It: I used this source to actually bash many non Ivy League schools. If you are not giving students the education they need that will match the graduation rate, why is the price so high? The evidence I inserted from the source gave my casual argument start of something great. My only purpose was to get people to listen with this source and I believe I’ve done a good job by starting with this source.

Community college enrollment rates expected to keep falling. (2018, June 21). Retrieved March 24, 2019, from https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2018/06/21/community-college-enrollment-rates-expected-keep-falling

Background: Community Colleges enrollment is starting to decline during this bad economic era. The unemployment is down which makes it a crisis for community colleges. They are not being funded and you can see a lot of people paying more than going to a 4 year university. They are facing pressure from the state to improve graduation, but majority of the people that come there often drop out. The author sees an opportunity to attack the colleges by removing the claim that college is affordable. Colleges can’t be affordable when half of the schools are not being funded. The question is where else can we get money?

How I Used it: I used this in my essay because it helps out my hypothesis. It makes me stand on my hypothesis and not switch to believe that tuition is not a factor to enrollment. I wanted my readers to understand how unemployment effected us and how schools and the state are doing nothing to help us. A lot of students wonder where there money is actually going and the source helps students understand more.

Explore the Top Public National Universities. (2018, September 25). Retrieved March 31, 2019, from https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/slideshows/explore-the-10-top-public-national-luniversities

Background- The author has collected and analyzed all information from the big universities in the enrollment process. The author shows that even some of the top notch schools are lowering tuition for increasing enrollment. Ranks 10 schools for lowest to highest. The author sees a chance to end a lot of criticism about dream schools becoming the most expensive schools to attend. You see no explanation just facts that will make you side with the author and become more informed.

How I Used It: Students believe that some of the dream schools are too expensive, but this source makes them wrong. I use it to make a lot of students change their mind. They are top notch schools because they actually lower tuition, which increases enrollment. The information and data inserted in the source helps me give the readers a number. When readers see a number they often stop jumping to conclusion.

Funding Down, Tuition Up. (2017, October 11). Retrieved from https://www.cbpp.org/research/state-budget-and-tax/funding-down-tuition-up

Background: The authors use a certain type of tone to make the readers understand the issue of state funding. Claims that whatever the state is doing now is not enough for students. States have reversed some funding cuts, but they must do much more. The fact that the economy is struggling makes the situation with tuition harder for students. Rates are at a all time high and need to be fixed now. Authors give a lot of solutions to change the social problem.

How I Used It: State funding is a key factor on why colleges are so expensive. I used this source because I wanted my readers to also attack the government. When schools don’t meet the requirement of a state then the money goes down. Colleges should focus more on how to get more students to graduate because students can keep suffering from the brutal price of school. This evidence from the sources give me a chance to help out a struggling student.

Hoffower, H. (2018, July 08). College is more expensive than it’s ever been, and the 5 reasons why suggest it’s only going to get worse. Retrieved from https://www.businessinsider.com/why-is-college-so-expensive-2018-4

Background: The author uses claims to gain the attention of the readers concerned with tuition. Inserts claims like College tuition and student loans are higher than ever. The author keeps the readers engaged by asking questions, “Why is college so expensive?” Graphs of data is showed to make his argument more powerful. The author gathers evidence on how the rise of tuition will become even worse throughout the years if colleges find no solution. Author looks to figure out whats the problem from today and the 1980s. In the 1980s, the cost of attendance wasn’t a issue that needed so much attention. Now today you can see that everything flipped and is becoming a crisis.

How I Used It- I actually needed this for my hypothesis. I wanted students and parents to see how the increase of tuition has effected the enrollment. The data gives me a better chance to grab any readers attention. The author caught my eye with this piece and made me realize a lot, so I wanted to make another student like me informed.

In-State vs. Out-of-State Tuition. Retrieved March 31, 2019, from https://www.heath.gwu.edu/state-vs-out-state-tuition

Background- The author gives evidence on how In-state tuition and Out-of state tuition can be a issue for a lot of students that are not living in low income homes. The author wants his readers to see the price difference from many of the Universities. Since a lot of the people see this not a problem, the author wants you to just stay in-state when you are looking for schools. The company gives a brief explanation on how things can become more better for yourself if you do decide to stay.

How I Used It- Students needed to see how they are treated when dealing with a school in-state and a school out of state. The evidence from this piece gives me a chance to help out somebody that believes that the price is the same for students that are in-state and out-of-state. This helped out my paper a lot because if you don’t have many solutions you cannot get people to side with your argument.

Lassila, Nathan E. (2011) “Effects of Tuition Price, Grant Aid, and Institutional Revenue on Low-Income Student Enrollment,” Journal of Student Financial Aid: Vol. 41: Iss. 3, Article 2. Available at: http://publications.nasfaa.org/jsfa/vol41/iss3/2

Background- The author inserts a lot of key evidence to show how tuition is effecting a lot of students, but it effects low income student enrollment more. When tuition goes up it gives a lot of lower income students a less of a chance to make there parents proud or even themselves. Low income students are struggling everyday to get approved for a loan, so when its time to go to school it’s hard to pay for everything out of pocket.

How I Used It: I used this source as a solution for a fair argument for people that don’t believe that my claim, that tuition should be reduced. Students need to realize that tutiton is actually a serious problem and we as a whole must stop overlooking it. This helped my paper alot because it didnt make anybody side with the critics; it just made me try a different angle for people to side with me.

Marcus, J. (2016, July 25). The Hidden Reason College Costs Keep Climbing. Retrieved from https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/07/the-paradox-of-new-buildings-on-campus/492398/

Background: The author claims that tuition is climbing because of the fact that colleges keep wanting new buildings. The author insets a lot of evidence that shows how much money a school spends on just buildings. When readers see the amount of money it makes you jump to conclusion. The conclusion that this is why the cost of attendance is different for many of schools. The author wants you to make that conclusion and wants us as readers to speak on it. He believes that nobody actually cares about buildings more than the actual diploma. Students will not remember the buildings at graduation day or years later after.

How I Used It: I used this source to gain attention from the students and parents. Students need to see where their money is going and why school’s keep rising tution. The answer is all in the source, and i explain it in my argumentive paper. My main purpose was to gain awareness and hopefully i did that with this source.

Rakoczy, C. (2018, February 09). 19 Places to Find Free Money for College. Retrieved from https://studentloanhero.com/featured/free-money-for-college-grants-scholarships/

Background: The author gives a lot of information to save a student. Saving students from paying a lot of money when knowing that we have a tuition problem. Free money is the only solution as of right now to lower the attendance cost. The author shows how Volunteer organizations, Grants, and Scholarships can release a lot of stress from students and their families. The author understands that a lot of students don’t understand how to get free money, so he uses his time to inform readers on how to make things right. The author gave 19 places where you can go to get free money and explains what to lookout for and what to do to receive the money.

How I Used It: Once again as students we should know how to get free money when attenting school. This source gives a lot important resources, which helps me inform my readers. Gaining the attention of my readers can help my argument. My argument needs a lot of people siding with me because of the fact that its so controversial.

Selingo, J. J. (2018, September 01). College students say they want a degree for a job. Are they getting what they want? Retrieved from https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/grade-point/wp/2018/09/01/college-students-say-they-want-a-degree-for-a-job-are-they-getting-what-they-want/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.f85f084d4e74

Background: The author reviews another social problem that is occurring because of tuition rising. College students are relying on school just to get a job. This shouldn’t be the case the author argues. Students should go to school to just learn the techniques and elements, the opportunity of a job will come. This makes a lot of professors feel like they didn’t do enough when students have the attitude to just get by. The fact that your are paying all this money should make you care even more about school, but this isn’t the case. The author want a lot of schools to start cracking down and discuss the problem that is occurring today. They know that they will become broke when its time to pay back the loans, so now they just focus on getting a job. Students should have fun and this won’t happen when they feel like they are going to school for a big job.

How I Used It: Students need to realize that relying on school for a job will make things worse. Students should go to school for the people and to learn, but that isnt the case. I attacked that problem by pulling out some important claims in this piece. I believe that I will change the mindsets of students. I understand that gaining more attention from the auidence is the key to a succesful argument.

Learning from Video Games

Growing up as a frequent gamer, I have heard all the excuses for me to stop playing. Whether it was about how video games will fry my brain to how video games will hurt my eyes, but no matter what I kept playing. At the time, I never thought about the big picture and how video games affected me physically, mentally, and emotionally. All my friends played video games, but we had a healthy dose of outdoor play as well. My diet wasn’t great, but I was a kid. Schoolwork wasn’t a big priority when I was little so as long as I had decent grades (C’s and B’s) I didn’t think too much about video games affecting my school work. What I never realized until I was older was the way video games shaped me and what they taught me about life. As we mature growing up, we start to see how our upbringings affected who we are today. Playing video games frequently not only causes an increase in better decision making but it allows the player to learn different values from each game. Not all games have this effect, but most storytelling or multiplayer games do.

After completing a day of hard grinding on Ubisoft’s first-person shooter game, Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, I know I have honed my skills in the game and also, it’s a reflection of the real world. Whether on the attacking or defending side, the player has to be mindful of every movement they make and what strategy they decide. Working with teammates is the key to survival and victory. One false move and the team could be taken care of by the enemy team or the clock could run down until there’s no more time left. I was able to learn more on competitiveness, teamwork, attention to detail, and deciding what should be the next move under pressure. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is one of the thousands of game titles that keeps people sharp, on their toes, and ready for the unexpected. I was able to translate the skills learned from video games to my football career in high school. Daphne Bavelier and her colleagues at the University of Rochester, New York, have been able to test and show results of how action video games improve decision making compared to non-players. “The researchers asked 11 video-game players and 12 non-players to determine the overall direction of a group of randomly moving dots. In another experiment, the volunteers had to identify with which ear they heard a tone concealed in white noise. In both cases, the players gave accurate answers faster than the non-players. According to the authors, this enhanced ‘probabilistic inference’ explains why video games, unlike other activities that train for specific tasks, can improve performance in tasks not specifically related to gameplay.” This explains how video games can improve our skills without us specifically focusing on a certain skill to work on. The evidence also shines light towards gamers having better reaction times and quicker perceptions.

Developers create video games from their own creative image and take inspiration from others. Video games were made for entertainment and something to do in the free time so it comes as a surprise that we can learn from them and apply what we learned to real life. Whether it’s a multiplayer shooter or an action-adventure telling a story, lessons can be learned from those experiences in the game. It simulates living a different life in another world and changes perspectives from the character and player in the game. Living through another person’s experiences allows the player to learn from their mistakes and define what should be the right and wrong thing to do in life through interactions. Some could say that playing video games can allow us to learn from our failures without true real-world consequences. I agree with that because anybody can translate what they’ve learned from the virtual experiences and apply this knowledge into the real world. Killing bad guys and saving the world can’t really help someone learn or get smarter but it is the skills they use to actually complete the game itself that does.

Communication is a skill that is used all the time in the real world and in multiplayer games. Headsets or microphones aren’t actually required but they are very helpful for talking to teammates. Also, talking to teammates isn’t always necessary in the game to communicate. Nowadays games are implementing default callouts that the player can activate via button inputs or pinging systems that allow the player to mark a certain area of interest. These are substitutions for talking but nothing beats voice communication when a gamer is focused on the objective. Talking and working with teammates strengthens and reflects communication in the real world whether it is working with classmates, teachers or coworkers at a job.

Completing levels or grinding to level up isn’t always as easy as it seems in games. It can get frustrating and being able to be adaptive to situations will help greatly. If the team captured the flag and the player was eliminated while holding the flag, the player has to be able to change the strategy and adapt to win. The real world throws various challenges around in different ways and it is necessary to have an adaptive attitude to overcome them. Video games allow us to test situations out to understand the outcomes so we can reflect on them and learn for the real world. Green & Bavelier explained perfectly how positive video game learning doesn’t just happen in a snap. “Game playing may not convey an immediate advantage on new tasks (increased performance from the very first trial), but rather the true effect of action video game playing may be to enhance the ability to learn new tasks.” Learning new skills from video games is definitely different from getting better at the skills someone already has. Although, being able to learn something new when playing is even greater. From Xbox to PlayStation to PC, all these consoles hold the capacity to enhance someone’s capability in this world without them even noticing. All it takes is one try at video games and anyone could be branched off into another universe. No matter how fictional the game is there could always be something gained from playing.

The Video Game Experience

When I was little, video games were becoming more and more popular in society. Of course, my parents and many other adults would tell us about how much of a waste of time they were or how they were going to turn our brains into mush. I never listened to them because I felt passionate about video games and I couldn’t just give them up. Balancing school work and playing video games never gave me a hard time. Studying would have been a good way to spend my time but I wasn’t much interested in school or what work we had to do. Starting high school, I knew I wanted to find something other than video games to focus on during my free time and what better to do than sports.

Being physically active was something that I wanted to start trying because before that I was just a couch potato. Blaming video games for my laziness would be silly because that was all I knew and all I was interested in. I really wanted to play a sport but I didn’t know which one to play. My final decision of football was finalized on me wanting to learn the game because I knew it was so popular. Football was very competitive and it was a long and hard journey for me because I knew if I wanted to become great, I would need to be assertive. The beginning two years for me consisted of me getting stronger and learning the game.

Something new was a great change for me but I never could drop video games completely. I believed they helped me escape into my own worlds and sparked my imagination. Not only that, they helped me learn valuable lessons that would help me throughout my football career and life and showed me how to compete. Game designers could easily relate that to staring a new video game. A consistent strategy I would use to learn how to play a video game would be to test out all the buttons to understand the controls to learn as I go before advancing into the game. This is also what I used during football because I would test out certain exercises that would show me limitations and help me narrow down on which position I would play.

Outside linebacker became my favorite position and the grind was hard but rewarding. Whenever I was stuck on a level or mission, on a video game, I’d think it over and keep trying till I beat it. This resiliency helped transition me into the challenges I faced during football. I started small and skinny but I pushed through till I became bigger, faster, and stronger. For the OLB position, I needed to be quick with reaction time or I would be blown off the ball by a lineman. Playing shooters and fast-paced video games helped me react quickly without having to think. Being able to shoot out of my stance as soon as the ball was snapped was important to every play. Multiplayer games helped me with better team communication and gave me the confidence to create better chemistry with my team. A team with great chemistry is a team not to be reckoned with.

Single player games show players different lives and emotions that are reflected in the real world. Multiplayer games and cooperative games promote teamwork and the importance of trusting in your teammates. These skills needed and gained for playing video games originated and real games like dominoes or card games. According to Dr. Randy Kulman, “Researchers in Italy, led by Sandro Franceschini, found that 12 hours of playing action video games (selected action-based mini games from Rayman Raving Rabbids ) resulted in more improvement in reading fluency than 1 year of traditional reading training.” Children can learn basic skills way faster through video games rather than traditional methods. The big difference that not many people acknowledge or see in videos games and board games is that video games are a lot more expansive in critical thinking. Board games are super limited to what the player can do and what decisions you make and video games can be the same. Although, video games add more of a pressure to think about what’s to do next because video games can range from the most linear storylines to the most open world, “the player decides” games.

Choosing from the first person games to the third person games all depends on preference. Those aren’t the only two types of games but they have proved to be the most popular. Choosing either third or first person, changes making decisions for the character either for the story or to gain rewards. Rewards come in experience points, in-game currency, or even more content to play. The entertainment value of gaining a reward is a big part of why video games are popular but what’s not always acknowledged is what the player can learn from it all.

The common mindset adults preach to kids and people becoming more responsible is to work hard for what they want. The decisions one makes in life can not only affect them but the people around them. Nobody’s perfect, as much of a cliche that is, but what helps us is learning from our mistakes and failures to become better or stronger as a person. Video games have a mutual connection to these lessons by making a player grind for what they want. Boiling video games down to the simplest of concepts, the objective is to get better at the said game as well as progress further.

Goals and checkpoints in the games work as milestones for the player to show them where they are at and how far they are to the end. Some games, such as some multiplayer games, don’t have a definite end because the developers want gamers to keep on playing. The obvious reason for this is because it brings them more money but that doesn’t mean consumers can’t take anything out from it. A popular single player/multiplayer game, Destiny, gives the player a story but also allows them to continue playing in multiplayer raids and other missions. This gives players the want for better loot and to play more.

Since Destiny is a single or multiplayer game, it encourages people to play with others to play for better chances of loot drops and to make the mission easier. Destiny greatly promotes the importance of team work.Explained in the Chicago Weekend, “Team work. The game contains threeplayer strikes and six-player raids, requiring communication and teamwork.” Simple lessons like teamwork can help a kid learn to work with people. As long as there is something to play for, there will be something to gain. People don’t just play video games to learn about life but they are great representations of outlets that teach kids and any other gamers important things in life.

The worst thing for placebo-believers to hear is that placebos are a myth. Even if they do work, there is no real consistent scientific results. The only way for this scam medication to do its intended job is for it to be unknown to the patient. If a sick individual really wants to be healthy, they would do everything they can to get what they want. We can apply this to the placebo effect. Patients most of the time want to feel better, free of unnecessary stress and setbacks caused by the disorder they have. The solution to their ills is all about having the right mind-set. Having an optimistic personality would help as well. Only the patient can decide whether they feel better or not. Without the right attitude, it is very unlikely the patient will discover how to end their suffering. Since placebos are based solely on the psychological reaction based on belief, should doctors be involved in the belief-based system.

Placebos are used mainly to heal a patient that has minor symptoms. They aren’t really effective with real diseases and disorders. What I mean by this is that placebos can’t cure cancer or diabetes. They can at most help ease some pain, but not cure these serious conditions fully. In a study involving placebo effects and acupuncture, 12 people were interviewed at the start, middle, and end of a trial for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Each person were to give their thoughts on placebos. The four conceptualizations made were ‘placebos are necessary for research; placebo effects are fake; placebo acupuncture is not real acupuncture; placebos have real effects mediated by psychological mechanisms.” By the end of the trial, the results of the study were nearly half and half. Some believed had “positive conceptualizations” of placebos and others believed that people who had those conceptualizations were “gullible.”

In a study, conducted by Brian J. Anderson, Gerald A. Woollard, and Nicholas H. Holford, they recorded effects of Acetaminophen analgesia and placebo in children undergoing outpatient tonsillectomy. Acetaminophen is a brand of analgesic used to relieve pain. These children were randomly selected from a group of 9±3.0-year-olds with a weight of 37.9±16.6 kg. They were to respond with a pain score after taking either the drug or placebo after a certain period of time of 4-8 hours. The results showed that even in high dosage, the acetaminophen didn’t have much of an effect than a lower dosage of the same drug, and that it came with side effects such as nausea and vomiting. The placebo had a higher pain reduction than the acetaminophen. Even when combined, the pain reduction was less than the placebo effect by itself. In this study, placebos are counterproductive to the scientific basis of medicine. It even questions the ability of medicine to heal patients when faced against belief based medicine.

As said by Florida Law Review, placebos should have no effect on a patient’s health. The trust in placebos that physicians have nowadays are increasing at a rapid rate. If it’s cheaper and more efficient to use, then why not use them? The use of deception makes the therapeutic placebo seem like a real treatment. Some physicians believe placebos work and make their patients feel better, but they were not so sure how they worked. It makes no logical sense for medical professionals to participate in the prescription of a treatment which they don’t understand. In addition to this, the relationship between the physician and patient is affected by whether a placebo works on the patient or not. Proof of a powerful placebo will cause the medical world to question the practice of medicine. However, there is an inconsistency in determining if placebos do in fact work. If somehow proven that the placebo effect works, physicians may have to reconsider their methods of prescribing them. Not only does this affect the relationship between physician and patient, but also the legal team is involved now too. Lawyers are going to have to reexamine the degree of deception, these doctors will be allowed to use legally. With the proper consent of the patient, physicians may prescribe whatever placebo they think is needed. However, by definition, having actual consent would prove to be detrimental to the effect of the placebos. It’s up to pharmaceutical companies and even the physician to emphasize the side effects, positive or negative, of the drug given to the patient. Without the ultimate use of deception, none of these scenarios would work anyways.

Reflective Statement

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

The interaction between the student and the professor happens through the students’ writing. For this class, we had many assignments, three of which included a Definition Argument, a Causal Argument and a Rebuttal Argument. With each short paper, we were to post on the blog publicly for all our classmates to see. Not only did they had a chance to see our work, but our professor did as well. The social practices that were embedded into each argument usually happened if the papers were in the “Feedback Please” category. But of course, there were other ways in which our papers were seen, like by our classmates too. This is the spot where our professor was able to give us feedback and subtle notes to help improve our writing on that specific assignment. After receiving a reply from our professor, we were to take that advice and incorporate it in our writing, and also reply back to say if it was helpful. The first ever assignment posted called My Hypothesis demonstrated this value.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

The research aspect of each assignment, and how well we connect each text demonstrates this core value. It also wants us to make sure we get a better understanding of how the text wants us to interpret its meaning by finding inspiration through other pieces of work. When doing the Safer Saws assignment, I looked at other classmates’ posts to help me understand the different types of claims. I also critically read the articles that were provided for the assignment to know that each claim represented a specific type. Everyone had different claims, but explaining why each claim was a certain one were very similar.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

The saying “know before we go,” is essentially the point of this core value. We have to understand who the target audience is and what our main point we’re trying to make. Not only do we have to evaluate our own writing, but take into consideration other points of views and angles that can be made. The point of the Rebuttal Argument was to find a way to refute our best thesis. By doing this, we had to look at other writings than our own to analyze all the possibilities that can come out of one topic. For mine, it was the placebo effect. I wrote about how open-labeled placebos have more of an effect than giving patients placebos using deception. I had to find a source that refuted my original argument about open-labeled which made me explore the alternative options of my main thesis.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

The whole research process is the main idea of this core value. We had to find sources and evaluate each one by breaking them down to its core. One of the processes that required us to look at the articles in depth, was the Purposeful Summaries assignment. Doing this assignment lets you step in the author’s shoes for a little to try to express their interpretation of the topic. Along with the summaries, we were to relate them to how it applies to our main focus of our own writing. Each article may not have the exact information we were looking for, but locating the key parts of them caused us to dig deeper than what was on the surface.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

The importance of giving the proper recognition to our sources is essential to a research paper. It is our responsibility to cite the author(s) of the articles we use for inspiration for our own writing. The Annotated Bibliography does just that. We had to say the background, how we used each source and a proper citation. This gives credit and what exactly we used them for. We shouldn’t twist the words of the authors either because it’s our responsibility to fairly represent the original ideas in our own words. It is important to have the citations in APA format in which we used a link in one of the agendas to provide help. In each of the arguments and the big research paper, there is a references section at the end of all of them. Those sources are just for the specific assignment, but this section presents appropriate citations.

Bibliography-Jets1313

1.Robinson, L. (1998). Professional athletes–held to higher standard and above the law: comment on high-profile criminal defendants and the need for states to establish high-profile courts. Indiana Law Journal, 73(4), 1313-1352.

Background: This article explains how when a celebrity is involved in a crime it brings out the “inequities within the justice system”, meaning it brings out all of the injustice that there actually is in the justice system especially when it comes to celebrities that are involved in high profile crimes.

How I Used It: I did not use this article as much as I thought I would have but I definitely should have used it more. I used this article in my white paper to try to prove how celebrities, especially professional athletes get much less serious backlash and punishment for their crimes.

2. Furman, H. (1998). Publicity in high profile criminal cases. St. Thomas Law Review, 10(3), 507-536.

Background: This article suggests that high profile lawyers do not always handle their cases in an honorable or lawful manner. It is also explained that the lawyers seek to gain more media attention for their unethical style of defense, bringing media influence to the case itself.

How I Used It: I used this article to explain my thesis and support it. This article helped me because it had evidence that Lawyers of a high profile are known to not be as honorable in court yet still get away with it. And this helped prove what I was saying was right.

3.Morris, J. N. (2003). Anonymous accused: Protecting defendants’ rights in high-profile criminal cases, the Boston College Law Review, 44(3), 901-946.

Background: This article explains how difficult it is to give high profile criminals their right to a fair trial. Because the court system also needs to realize that their jury might be affected by outside sources. The article talks about how our first amendment right allows the media to portray and influence the world in any way they so please. It explains how this is a problem because the jury can be swayed.

How I Used It: This article was useful to me because it helped me to show the counter argument to my thesis. That high profile cases are at a disadvantage in the court room. As opposed to my thesis that they have an advantage.

4. Gibeaut, J. (2005). Celebrity justice. ABA Journal, 91(1), 43-49.

Background: In this article John Gilbeaut explains his theory of a two tiered court system. This means that there is one court system for people of a high profile and a whole separate court system for the average person. In this article he explains the discrepancies.

How I Used It: This article was helpful to me because it allowed me to have more information to support my claim that high profile lawyers make the criminal justice system unfair. This also helped me to prove that I am not alone in believing that the court system is different depending on how much money you have. This is definitely not how it’s supposed to be.

5.Carroll, B. A. (2013). Celebrity adjudication: Comparative analysis of united states verdict rates for celebrity defendants. Entertainment and Sports Law Journal, 11(1), 1-8.

Background: This article explores the idea that high profile cases get the upper hand because a lot of the time celebrities become household names, and people cannot believe they would commit a crime. This article also explains how the verdicts for celerity defendants differ from normal people’s.

How I Used It: This article helped me because it allowed me to prove my thesis and it explained one of the many reasons why people of a high profile get off easy when it comes to their crimes.

6.Brotman, E. C. (2015). Dealing with the press in high-profile cases: How to neutralize the 13th juror. Litigation, 41(4), 40-44.

Background: This resource helped to explain the opposing side of my theses. It also showed me that people of high profiles are more likely to lose their good reputations over a crime. It also helped my claim though by explaining our first amendment right and how it doesn’t matter who we are, everyone is allowed to say anything they want. and that this should be expected.

How I Used It: This article really helped me to strengthen my claim because It was important for me to make it known to the reader that yes, maybe it is true that a reputation will be ruined, however, isn’t that to be expected when being accused of a crime. This article helped me to learn how to back up my claim.

7.Chamberlain, J.; Miller, M. K.; Jehle, A. (2006). Celebrities in the courtroom: Legal responses, psychological theory and empirical research. Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment and Technology Law, 8(3), 551-572.

Background: This article explains how celebrities are treated with more leniency than an average person in a court of law. The author also believes that these celebrities get sympathy form the public.

How I Used It: This article supports my claim that celebrities are treated better in a court of law then regular people. The public thinks of the celebrity defendant as someone that can never do anything wrong and that maybe they are being falsely accused. This helps my claim because it is another reason why the justice system is not fair.

8.Cushner, Q.; Hartley, R.; Parker, D. (2009). Spreading the news: Communicating with the media during high-profile trials. Judicature, 93(2), 52-82.

Background: This article explains in depth how the media is allowed to communicate with people involved in High Profile cases. It explains what is allowed to be released and how they actually come into contact. It also tells the boundaries that the media has in terms of obtaining information.

How I Used It: This source was helpful because it gave me background knowledge about what the limits were to the medias knowledge. Also, I never really understood how the court and the media came into contact and who was allowing this to all be recorded and this article gave me that information.

9.Wilkinson, B. A.; Schulman, S. H. (2002). When talk is not cheap: Communications with the media, the government and other parties in high profile white collar criminal cases. American Criminal Law Review, 39(2 Annual Survey of White Collar Crime), 203-224.

Background: This article explains how usually the second a high profile criminal needs help it seems that everyone is at attention and on their side. It is almost as if everyone is trying to protect this person. It also explains how lawyers often respond to the media without really taking into consideration what they say and how it could effect their client.

How I Used It: I used this article by teaching myself more about lawyers and their intentions on cases of a high profile. Although this article mainly discusses white collar criminals, I think it is still applicable to my claim because these circumstances are similar to those of a normal celebrity criminal where everyone is trying to help the person of high profile.

10.Wetherington, G. T.; Lawton, H.; Pollock, D. I. (1999). Preparing for the high profile case: An omnibus treatment for judges and lawyers. Florida Law Review, 51(3), 425-488.

Background: This article elaborates on what exactly a judge lawyer needs to do to prepare for a high profile case. This includes money, backlash, media and everything in between. This also includes how they will handle it if they lose a lot of money from the case.

How I Used It: This article as helpful in supporting my claim that celebrities have easier times at court because it is less expensive for them to get what they want. So, Ideally this is what happens.

Annotated Bibliography- pomegranate

Reuter, Peter, and Edwin M. Truman. “Chasing Dirty Money: The Fight Against Money Laundering.” Google Books, Nov. 2004, books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=0AVwjC9TDSMC&oi=fnd&pg=PR11&dq=money%2Blaundering%2B&ots=v4Msj-C2Rd&sig=9KHesretWcyK0Vcdza2L1xJOlWA#v=onepage&q=money%20laundering&f=false.

Background: This source is basically an entire background of money laundering. It gives definitions and other terms that are useful when describing money laundering. It also gives techniques and tactics that money launderers use when they are trying to keep a low profile or when they are simply just trying to money launder.

How I Used It: I used it in my essay because of the reason that it had so much background. It used easy terms and detailed sentences so I could clearly get the idea of what money laundering is across to the readers.

Gilmour, Nicholas. “Everyday Vulnerabilities – Money Laundering through Cash Intensive Businesses.” Journal of Money Laundering Control, 2015,http://www.emeraldinsight.com/doi/abs/10.1108/JMLC-06-2014-0019.

Background: This source is to provide a better understanding of the specific techniques of a criminal who obtains illicit funds, moves, transfers, and launders in the financial agreement retained by cash-intensive businesses in the UK and internationally. This also explains ethical approaches from the idea of money laundering.

How I Used It:  I used this source to again show more background of money laundering and how criminals move the money to make it more legit. It gave me a better understanding of the background which helped me to relay the ideas of the criminals.

Dion, Michel. “Is Money Laundering an Ethical Issue?” Journal of Money Laundering Control, 2015, http://www.emeraldinsight.com/doi/abs/10.1108/JMLC-06-2014-0018.

Background: This source offers descriptions of the philosophical positions about activities that relate to money laundering. It gives background on the way it ties in with ethical issues and the law.

How I Used It: I used this source to get a better understanding of how the law looks at it. I was able to relay this message into my paper by taking all of the different ethical approaches and breaking them down piece by piece to give the reader a better understanding of how the law looks at it.

Gilmour, Nicholas. “Understanding the Practices behind Money Laundering – A Rational Choice Interpretation.” International Journal of Law, Crime and Justice, Elsevier, 29 Mar. 2015, http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1756061615000385.

Background: This source uses a criminal’s standpoint of how money laundering is done. It gives different examples and tactics of how the crime is, well, done. It gives strategic activities based on the crime.

How I Used It: I used this in my paper to show the criminals view of how they did it and what they did strategically to get away with it.

Layton, Julia, and Oisin Curran. “How Money Laundering Works.” HowStuffWorks, 1 June 2006, money.howstuffworks.com/money-laundering5.htm.

Background:  This source gives effects from different global effects in social, economic, and security terms. It shows the different effects very descriptively and how it effects the government.

How I Used It: I used this in my paper to show the different effects money laundering in the government. I used the detailed examples of what each end is doing to slowly effect the government. It is used to show how much money launderers obtain every year.

Hamm, Trent. “Why I Keep Cash Under My Mattress.” The Simple Dollar, 1 Nov. 2018, www.thesimpledollar.com/why-i-keep-cash-under-my-mattress/.

Background: This source shows a real person who actually hides money under his mattress. He explains how it is for emergencies and explains how it is always good to have a little bit of cash around because of the simple fact if there is an emergency where he needs quick money.

How I Used It:  I used it to show how the idea of people putting money in their mattresses to hide it is still relevant. People used to do it back in the day, and it is almost unheard of now. This is why I put it in my paper because now that people are so reliant on banks, the last place they would check for money is a mattress.

Dholakia, Utpal. “Why Are There So Many Mattress Stores in America?” Psychology Today, Sussex Publishers, 22 Sept. 2015, www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-science-behind-behavior/201509/why-are-there-so-many-mattress-stores-in-america.

Background: This source was a boost of my idea that there cannot be this much demand on mattresses. It shows the relationship between Starbucks stores and mattress stores. The findings showed that there is a significantly greater amount of mattress stores. This being 225 for every 1 person in the Houston area.

How I Used It:  I used this to support my idea. It clearly shows that there are other people that have their suspicions on why there are so many mattress stores. People also looked further into it and found people that too question why there are so many stores.

McGlasson, Linda. “Confessions of a Former Money Launderer.” Bank Information Security, 14 Apr. 2008, www.bankinfosecurity.com/confessions-former-money-launderer-a-818.

Background: This source gives full background from a money launderer themselves. It is an interview on his techniques and tactics. It truly shows what he does to be successful and a rundown on his successes.

How I Used It: I used this source to get the inside scoop from the mind of a money launderer. I used it to show how it could be done and how secretive it could be. I also used it to show some of the consequences one can face if they were to get caught for this crime.

Ceidotorg, CEI Staff. “Why the War on Money Laundering Should Be Aborted.” Competitive Enterprise Institute, 20 Dec. 2016, cei.org/outreach-regulatory-comments-and-testimony/why-war-money-laundering-should-be-aborted.

Background: This source shows how the wat on money laundering should, well, stop. It shows that people do not understand the consequences of money laundering. It is a way more complex action than it is said out to be.

How I Used It: I used this in my paper to show that money laundering is a more detailed process than said out to be. The consequences are hard to understand and people continue to do this crime. People do not understand the actual idea of money laundering so I put it in my paper to describe what it is, actually.
