Safer Saws- profs22

Manufacturer:

“Bosch’s saw establishes a low-voltage capacitive circuit between the user and a sensing device next to the blade. Flesh coming into contact with the blade shorts the circuit and trips the chemical firing mechanism of a cartridge housed next to the blade.” Bosch demonstrates how the saw works and how it can prevent injuries. This is a factual claim because it provides factual evidence on how the saw works. This claim is reasonable and accurate as it provides true information about the saw. However it is not quite persuasive enough because it does not clearly demonstrate or provide an example.

Customers:

“Data supplied by SawStop concerning the number of table saw units sold and the number of reported blade contact incidences, demonstrates that operators are nearly five times more likely to contact the saw blade of a SawStop saw as opposed to the operator of a conventional table saw.” Because the sawstop is marketed by selling its safety features, customers are less likely to take caution when using it, thus resulting in even more injuries. This is a numerical claim as it gives the likelihood of how you are 5x more likely to be injured with the sawstop. This is a pretty reasonable claim but i don’t completely agree with it. The saw is more safe than a regular saw, its just that the customers are using it wrong. This claim makes the sawstop look bad to readers, when really there is no issue with the product, it is the costomer at fault.

Industry Spokespeople:

“Unmatched: The SawStop Industrial Cabinet Saw is the heaviest, most powerful, and highest quality 10″ cabinet saw available.” This claim is the first thing that the reader sees on the official sawstop website. This is a descriptive claim as it provides details about the product. I do not think that claim is persuasive and is very bad quality for being the first thing that comes up on the website. They should lean towards a more factual claim to provide a more convincing argument to sell their product.

Consumer Safety Advocates:

” A man took an Oscar Meyer wiener and pushed it into the blade of a table saw spinning 4,000 times per minute. As the hot dog touched the whirring saw, the blade came to a dead stop in about three one-thousandths of a second, leaving the dog with only a minor nick.” This demonstration shows the audience how safe their product is. This demonstration is so well known that some even call it the hot dog saw. This is an evaluative claim because the reader can assess the demonstration and determine how safe the saw is. I think this claim is very persuasive and accurate because it provides proof and influences the audience to buy the product.

Plaintiffs:

“The latest SawStop Vs Bosch Reaxx ruling has fallen in favor of SawStop. The end game is stop the import and sale of Reaxx saws and parts. ” In court it was determined that Bosch had to stop the sale of their saws because its competitor sawstop had a patent on their product. This is a factual claim because it is providing details about the outcome of the lawsuit. This claim is reasonable and accurate. I do not think it has any persuasive qualities toward the reader because it is irrelevant to the safety of the saw.

Personal Injury Lawyers:

“Every year, there are over 40,000 table saw injuries, resulting in more than 4,000 amputations. Table saws cause more injuries than any other woodworking tool. Although SawStop safety technology has been around for more than ten years, not all table saw manufacturers have adopted it. In fact, the world’s largest tool manufacturers rejected it.” This claim is how the injury lawyers approach their argument to defend those injured by table saws. This is a numerical claim as it verifies the number of table saw related injuries. I think this claim is very useful and convincing because it provides evidence of the injuries and the fact that most companies have no adopted the safety technology on their product. Thus resulting in an absurd amount of injuries due to table saws. This convinces the reader to buy the sawstop to prevent injury.

Government Officials:

” federal regulators are considering whether to make Gass’ technology mandatory in the table-saw industry. The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced plans for a new rule in May, and the rules could take effect in the coming months.” The fact that this safety technology is considered being mandatory is very convincing for customers to buy that product as they may be forced to in the future. This is an evaluative claim because the reader can assess what actions government officials are taking which can influence their decision. The law has a big say in this decision because most people tend to look up to those of a higher status and will listen to what they say. In this case the feds plan to make safety technology mandatory which will persuade the reader to buy saws with the safety features.

News Reporters:

“But as court records and testimony have shown, the companies rejected the safety advance for another reason, too: They worried that if a way to prevent severe injuries got traction in the market, they would face liability for accidents with conventional saws.” This news reporter suggesting that the power industry is too powerful to regulate. This is a factual claim as it explains the issues that have occurred in court. I dont think this claim provides too much information that would influence the reader. It is accurate but does not persuade the reader.

Causal Essay- PardonMyFrench

The Lifeblood of Social Media

Social media platforms fill peoples head with false realities. From the way society is expected to look, how they are expected to act, and what material goods people should yearn for, is a big influence from social media sites. It’s easy to fall into the trap and believe social media isn’t a lie. To believe that it is the be all end all. When you take someone with a mindset such as that, their self esteem can be greatly affected when they see someone who has more than them. When a person’s self-esteem plummets, this can lead to depression, anxiety, and the ultimate worst, suicide.

Sites like Instagram and Facebook rely on heavy traffic to keep afloat. Users of the site use likes and comments to keep the platform relevant and the site popular. Most users fall in the age range of 17-28 years old and are the generation to be most influenced by others. Social media sites now even have people they call “Influencers” who are basically like advertisers. These “Influencer” users wear or talk about a certain product and make it look good in order for the general public to want that same thing, thinking the influencer actually relies on the product in their daily life. These posts just like others receive likes, and with enough likes, it makes the page more popular and generates more users to that page. Many people have started to aspire to be influencers and believe getting “likes” is the main goal. If these likes didn’t exist, neither would the site. People wouldn’t bother to post if there was nothing to compete with making them the lifeblood of the platform. If likes diminished, would the site even exist?

Since likes and comments keep social platforms alive, it could very well be that self-esteem would be affected by such things. Some people are just more prone to need a lot more attention, positive feedback and affirmation from friends, than other users. If these type of people aren’t getting as many likes as they see fit this could tear them apart and not allow them to feel as much self-worth as they typically could or should. The other problem with this is even if the said user is getting a lot of likes, they will always be comparing themselves to others that receive more feedback then them. It’s a never-ending cycle of not feeling good enough. In these situations, it can be easy to see how people who rely on this kind of affirmation could become depressed and anxiety stricken.

According to Pantic (2014) anxiety, depression, psychotic disorders and low self-esteem are all the likely results of social networking sites, especially Facebook. These sites have high probability for cyber bullying with the ability to spread rumors and inappropriate pictures. Social media sites have also been seen to be used to combat loneliness but only lead to becoming more dissatisfied. After viewing other profiles jealousy arises when a user sees someone they see as more superior or better-off than them. As a result, they start to feel more inferior, less privileged and ungrateful. All of these can add up and result in someone trying to take their own life because of it.

The type of satisfaction that social media brings users is a type of addiction. The highs and the lows keep users coming back. Users get hooked on the feeling and need more until no amount is enough. This is no one’s fault other than the standards society has set. The social media sites themselves also have no incentive to decrease the amount of people coming to there sites, or to want to take away being able to view the interactions that take place. They are in the business to encourage users to become addicted to their site. They do not care about each individual, only their sites success.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth aged 10–24 years old globally. Many of these people have never even met with mental health services or showed any signs. Many questions were asked to get down to the bottom of this and figure out the cause. Research showed that there was an association between increased social media/internet use and suicide in this age group particularly. This seemed to be due to the fact that social media sites have the potential to both suggest and reinforce negative thoughts and behaviors. Social medias influence on suicide is a public health problem that was created and now needs addressing. Many organizations are now trying to make that a reality from the internet, how contradicting.

Many social media sites have teamed up with agencies to try and prevent suicide and increase the self-worth that society and social media platforms destroyed in the first place. The American Academy of Pediatrics warned that social media use can cause depression. Since many negative claims about social media have come to fruition, they are trying to now flip the script. Many social sites teamed with suicide watch hotlines and Facebook made a new feature which allows users to flag posts that seem suicidal. Mental health researchers are also increasingly analyzing tweets and Facebook messages to find out who is suicidal and try to take steps to better understand suicide prevention.  Social media sites will not be going away anytime soon, so it only makes sense to take this as an opportunity to learn about it and improve.

How social sites effect the world around it is a multi-level structure. There are many different outcomes that are different for everyone. Not all people are negatively affected by social media or feel the need to receive likes to be validated. “Influencers” changed the social media game and made receiving likes popular and the goal. For people that aspire to be like this and need this constant affirmation, they can find themselves in a lonely place. Social media can become drug like and addicting because of this therefor resulting in lower self-worth. Lower self-worth then turns into anxiety, depression, and has even been seen in the worst of cases to result in cases of suicide. Social sites will never stop the amount of likes they get because that would be counterintuitive to their mission, so instead they team with suicide prevention to keep the sites popular. These issues will lead to further problems and the cycle will continue on. Social media and its “likes” cease to see an end, so for now the vicious effects will continue on.

#1

Low income families are more likely to suffer from mental health disorders. Most low income families cannot afford health insurance, even if they can the insurance companies do not always cover the full cost of medicine. It can be very expensive, so families struggling financially cannot afford to get the treatment they need. The underprivileged Americans are suffering and nothing is being done to help.

#2

Psychiatric medication is difficult to obtain without a prescription. Many of the medications that are used to treat mental illnesses are abused and used recreationally, and are not given out easily. There is little communication between physicians and pharmacys, leaving the patient isolated. Many steps are required to obtain the right treatment and it can be a difficult process.

A Fair Trade

When coming into high school I had a choice, to go to my local high school or apply for a vocational school in my county, to which I chose the latter. For my four years I was leaving my friends behind and going into a new environment. I got to meet new people, focus on courses that would correspond with what career field I wanted to go into, and most importantly which I value the most, the major head start I have against other students in college and career readiness. Comparing the curriculum of those students who went to my local high school with those in the high school I attended was like night and day. Students who were in the same courses as me the year prior to high school graduated with about the same amount of courses I took in my freshman and sophomore year, and I was given transferable college credits for some of the courses I had taken. In addition to those credits, I was able to attend a community college for my senior year and transfer credits when I fully attended college which with all credits added up, going in as a freshman I had enough credits that I show up as a sophomore because I have completed so many classes. Friends of mine that went to my local high school didn’t seem to have as much opportunity as me. After seeing the disparity between my two choices I am a firm believer that teaching career focused curriculum and early college options results in a great head start for students entering college.

As stated by Joel Vargas,  the author of Blending high school and college can sharpen the focus of each, “Earning a high school diploma is a necessary but insufficient step toward supporting oneself and one’s family”. This is the complete truth. What he is saying is just because you have the high school diploma, doesn’t mean you will be able to hold or obtain a job solely based on that fact. No engineering firm or medical center will hire you just because you graduated high school. There will always be something more that has to be done to prepare for such a position. That is where the blending of high school and college comes in, which I experienced first hand and was very glad I did so, and it wasn’t just my school where the results showed. In the article, early college students were compared to regular high school goers in three different categories, graduation rate, post graduation accolades, and likelihood to persist in higher education. The results were as follows: 90% of early college students graduated high school compared to 78% annually, 30% of early college students earn an associate’s degree or postsecondary certificate with their high school diploma compared to very few nationally, and that early college graduates are more likely to persist in higher education and to earn a degree than those who did not attend early college.

Students dropout of school and this fact will probably never change. The big question behind this though, is why. Why do these students dropout and what can we do to decrease the numbers of student dropouts per year? Give the students a choice. It is highly more likely that a student in a class they are interested in will produce greater results and efforts than a class they are much more dissatisfied with. For example, someone who loves working with computers will most definitely feel more willing to take a class focused around computer software than one where they are not. As stated in College Knowledge by Sarah Hooker and Betsy Brand “High school dropouts report their primary reasons for leaving school were that classes were uninteresting or irrelevant to the world beyond high school”. Each student is different and like what they like so when what they are interested in isn’t an option, it feels like there is no reason to participate. That is where career academies and early college high schools change the game.

Career academies provide a wide arrangement of different fields to be focused in such as engineering, medical, computer science, and construction just to name a few. The layouts for each career academies across schools is obviously different but they each tend to get their job done. Their job being to give the students a learning environment with concentration focused curriculums for different fields and hands on experience. I can say from personal experience that I am not one who loves the cookie cutter schooling format where each kid comes in every year and takes a math class, an english class, etc, and each year just seems to be a higher level repeat of the last. Whereas, in high school, I had courses concentrated towards different parts of the engineering field and many more math courses that would put me ahead of my peers. This isn’t just the fact that I was ahead of the game, but I was enjoying what I was doing and eager and much more willing to do good in these classes, and the results showed.

This isn’t only for me as the career academy approach has engaged and encouraged students for multiple decades and still proves to be working. As we see in “High School Career Academies: A 40-Year Proven Model for Improving College and Career Readiness”, the author, Betsy Brand states “career academies are one of the very few educational models that has developed “National Standards of Practice” to encourage continuous improvement”. This is a great point and what we need to start doing more of. Putting someone in a position that they don’t want to be in or don’t feel comfortable with and giving them an objective will not produce results comparable to those in their comfort zone. Schools need to be willing to work with the students and cater to their needs and interests. Students will be much more willing to work with their schools to the highest potential if the effort they put in is being matched by the schooling system. A fair trade consists of both sides producing efforts to fit each side of the deal and if one side isn’t following through, don’t expect results of the highest degree because that isn’t a fair trade, that is just a scam.

Causal Argument-Hailthegreat8

Authoritarian Parents

Authoritarian parents get precisely what they deserve: children who do everything they can to resist the control exerted from above and rebel in various, unpredictable ways, including but not limited to failing all their classes as a deliberate rebuke to their parents’ demands. Suppose you have an Authoritarian parent or know someone who does. You should know what those parents expect from their child. Authoritarian parents have really high expectations from their children; they fight for their children to succeed in their field. My aunt is an example of an Authoritarian parent. I remember talking to my cousins, and they said their mom is really strict and doesn’t play any games when it comes to academics, there are no excuses when they receive a specific grade, and if they do receive a bad grade, they receive many backlashes.

To go more in-depth about Authoritarian parents. They expect their child never to follow whatever they tell them; their no discussion. Many parents choose this style, but their many reasons for it; for example, it could be because of their morals and culture or because their parents brought them up that way, and that’s the only way they know how to teach their child. It might be an endless chain, but if you trust this type of parent style, here are some of the rules that they teach. For instance that parents like that think having obedience from their child is a form of love.

Tracy Traunter from Michigan State University stated, “Having strict rules that must be followed. Children are punished if rules are not followed. Punishment is usually harsh and punitive. It can become abusive, physically and emotionally” and “There is typically no give and take, and will exert complete and total control over the family.” Personally, I don’t support these types of parenting styles because it’s unhealthy and can hurt your child in many ways. I understand that these types of parents want their children to succeed but teach your child differently. There is a negative side effect to Authoritarian parents; here are some of the outcomes stated by Tracy Traunter from Michigan State University. “Children are aggressive, but can also be socially inept, shy and cannot make their own decisions,” and “Children in these families have poor self-esteem, are poor judges of character, and will rebel against authority figures when they are older.” Your child could also struggle to think for themselves when their older if they told what to do every day like this by their parents. They can also have some difficulties expressing themselves to other people; this parenting type can really mess up a child mentally. Authoritarian parents’ problem is that they don’t express their feelings to their children, especially when they don’t meet their expectations and that horrible. I understand that your child has to follow the rules you have placed in your household, but if they end up making a mistake, you should sit down and explain to them what they did, don’t just always punish them severely. Your child can end up hating you later in the future. Researches have done experiments on Authoritarian parenting styles and found out that those types of kids have a chance of performing horribly.

Rachel Sawicki wrote an article about her experience growing up as an Authoritarian parent. She describes how she lost many companions, was in and out of relationships and didn’t enjoy spending time with her family. As she goes mire into her story, she describes her mom and says that she was an Authoritarian parent and taught her everything she knows right now. She remembers always getting yelled at for small mistakes that genuinely weren’t that serious. One of the moments she vividly remembers was when she chose to dress up for dinner one night because she enjoyed dressing up, and thought she would get some happy faces and flattery from everyone, but she got in trouble for not being on time for dinner. Rachel Sawicki stated that her mom shouted at her these words, “Why would you put that on before dinner? There’s no need to get dressed up. That outfit is uncalled for, go and take it off right now,” my mom yelled. I cried the rest of the night.” Rachel Sawicki went more in and described her middle school days and said her phone was confiscated every other day of the week if she even made a little mistake and her mother would go through her phone and scold her anything unrefined; she would we send to her peers that were only supposed to be seen by her and her schoolmate. During her highschool life, Rachel came out bi, and she described how hard it was for her to fit in school; her mother made her stay away from her friends and took her electronics away for around six months, and she was watched ber mother for close to a year after she returned everything to her. Rachel Sawicki stated that those experiences made her life horrible she said, “I was extremely suicidal and wanted to run away. Not once did my mom ever ask me why I felt the way I did nor did she listen when I tried to explain. I was wrong and she was right, end of story”. She never wanted to go to therapy because she thought it was a form of torture her mom wanted to do to her. This story by Rachel Sawicki is an example of the negative side effects of an Authoritarian parent. This type of parenting can lead your child to be depressed and have social anxiety.

I know there are some negative side effects of Authoritarian parenting like depression and social anxiety-like in my previous paragraph and their positive outcomes about Authoritarian parenting; I hope you just make sure you show your love and connect with them emotionally.

Causal Argument-rowanstudent24

Abuse on Animals

Society has demonstrated in a number of different ways how mistreat an animal. It is a growing problem in the world today. It can be hard to identify that an animal is being abused but that’s no excuse for the problem to keep getting bigger. Animal Abuse appears to be more common in dysfunctional homes where people are uneducated in the area of caring for animals properly.

Dysfunctional homes are the main cause of animal abuse. The kids learn from their parents and if they see that their parents are abusing their pets as well as other family members then the kids learn that. They believe that is the way you treat another living thing which isn’t right. In the article, “Animal Abuse, Family Violence, and Child Wellbeing: Review,” the author, Samara McPhedran, states “Consequently, in families where any given form of family violence exists, animal abuse may also be more likely to exist.” When kids see abuse happening within the household, they’ll take that into their family when they grow up because that’s what they learned. It’s like a never ending cycle of animal abuse living in each generation. There are a couple things in the world that just convey this problem.

Vet’s today are supposed to love all animals. That’s why most of them choose the profession. Animals are their world and they always make sure they are being taken care of properly by the owner. Animal abuse should be a big thing to report if they suspect it but that doesn’t happen as often as people would think. There are vets that just don’t report it and continue to let it happen because they’re scared to say something. Georgina Mills states in the article, “Reporting Cases of Animal Abuse,” that a study done by “psychologists at the University of Kent, found that almost a third of the vets asked had suspected at least one incident of animal abuse in the past year, but only half of those had reported cases to the authorities.” Little things like these cause animal abuse just because it keeps the problem going since it’s not being reported.

Animal abuse can not only be found in dysfunctional homes but also within public events involving animals. For example, the circus is a big event that involves animal abuse. The trainers want them to perform certain acts but when they don’t do this they hurt them in some way. Deborah Nelson states in her article, “The Cruelest Show on Earth,” Despite years of denying it, Kenneth Feld has now admitted under oath that his trainers routinely ‘correct’ elephants by hitting them with bullhooks, whipping them, and on occasion using electric prods. He even admitted to witnessing it.” Kenneth Feld is the CEO of Feld entertainment who has operated the Ringling Brothers. The trainers are being educated incorrectly on how to treat the animals. The trainers must have abused an animal in some type of way before for them to have the heart to do this to the circus animals.

Another public event that is haunted by the presence of animal abuse is horse racing. Also done by the trainers as well. It was made known about the abuse of the horses in 2012 when an article was published by the New York Times. Bryan Denham, states in his article, “Intermedia Attribute Agenda Setting in the New York Times: The Case of Animal Abuse in U.S. Horse Racing,” that “On average, the Times reported , 24 horses die each week on U.S. race tracks; some break down during competition, while others sustain fatal injuries in practice sessions.” This is mainly because the horses are abused and very overworked from practicing. The abuse the trainers are committing on these animals can again originate from being uneducated in how to properly take care of an animal.

The origination of these trainers abusing an animal again cates back to learning that when they were younger. They most likely have grown up in a dysfunctional home where family abuse and animal abuse were both present. McPhedran also stated in her article, “Animal Abuse, Family Violence, and Child Wellbeing: A Review,” that “In a Utah shelter study, 22 women had children, and 32% (or 7 women) reported that one or more of their children had abused or killed companion animals.” She also states before that children of women in shelters are 20 times more likely to have witnessed animal abuse. The children see it and learn from that. It continues to haunt them throughout their life because they have no idea it’s a bad thing. That’s just what they were taught. The family dysfunctionality is causing these kids to grow up and become abusers.

The conflict of animal abuse has loomed over the world for quite a while. There are a lot of different causes to the different kinds of animal abuse. The abuse within horse racing as well as the circus is because the trainers are not taught to treat the animals with care. They just care about keeping the animals alive and the animals doing what they’re told to do and when they don’t do that they get hurt. Even when the horses are actually racing they’re whipped constantly to get them to go faster. Just little things like that can cause the animal to be in pain constantly. The trainers are taught when they are hired how to treat these show animals as well as learning from their childhood how to treat an animal the incorrect way. All this abuse goes back to the dysfunctional home. Parents fight all the time causing violence on the family members as well as the pets. The children seeing this causes them to be uneducated on how to properly care for an animal and it continues throughout their life until someone tells them that’s not right and demonstrates the correct way to them. This is a growing problem in society today and it’s like a never ending cycle because the abuse gets past on to each generation.

I feel like I am doing good right now but I definitely could use another person for some help. I’d like to get another view point on my research. I feel like I have a good cause and effect with how cars computers can glitch causing a crash and how cars will be able to make ethical choices. I could use a little more help deepening my research.

Visual Rhetoric-JeffBezos

In the first 5 seconds of this commercial, you see a young man running around playing soccer. You see him sweating alot and breathing heavly, indicating that he is most likey tired from playing. I see that the lights are on this meaning that it is night time. Then when you at the players, you see that they are wearing diffrient colors meaning that they play on the opposite teams.

In the 5-10 seconds you hear a voice in the backround that says “when playing football(Soccer) you run about 120 pitches(field lengths) in an hour”. This tells us how tiring and physically hard this sport is. You see a man squirting a bottle of gaterade in his mouth. This seeming to refesh him to be able to go back on the feild and run. The pace of the commercial is fast, in my opinion i think that this shows how quick and intense this game actually is.

In the next 5 seconds you hear the guy state again how you use all these muscles to play this sport. You increase your adrenaline nearly 3 times while playing the game. This again tells us how physically demanding it is to play this sport. You see these boys still running up and down this feild sweating and making moves on each other. These images fashing across the screen are going fast, this confirming to me that this is a very fast game with alot of movements.

In the following 5 seconds you get told how your heart rate is rising to almost 180 beats a minuite. During this time you see a close up of someones face with him drenched in sweat. He looks like he is very focused on the game that is being played. This is all showing me how hard these athletes push themselves to play this game.

In the next part you hear them tell you how you lose three leters of sweat just to score one goal. Then you see a boy hit the top right corner and scoring. This showing the elite level that these guys are playing at. When the guy hits the ball with his head, again you see the sweat go everywhere. This looks like the guys are completely exahusted. They seem to be working very hard.

In the last 5 seconds of the viedo you hear the same man say this is not just a game, gatorade works. Then the camera zooms in on a man drinking this and the lights shut out. During this the camera turns black and you see just gatorade. This tells me as the viewer that after a game you need to drink it. This makes you play at a higher level and is very health for your body.

Safer Saws – Mhmokaysure

Gass
“Within a few thousandths of a second, the blade slammed to a stop.” This is a quantitative claim as the Gass, the manufacturer, is using data collected in testing to describe the speed with which the product he has created works. This claim is used to bolster his pitch of the safety benefits his product provides, enticing consumers to believe in his product and eventually purchase it.

Customer
“SawStop’s blade guard is very low-profile and convenient”. This is an evaluative claim, as it comes from a customer judging the product that Gass and SawStop have created. It’s made to compliment the product, focusing on the efficient design of the blade guard itself. In making this claim, the customer tells other’s their opinion on the design of the product, bringing attention and possibly encouraging others to invest in it.

Industry Spokespersons
“putting profits before the safety of their customers.” This is a combination of evaluative and numerical claims, as the claim is judging the lack of putting consumer safety first by alleging that other companies find profits to be more important. Although not backed by specific numerical data, this claim acts as an attack on the industry for failing to put consumer safety first. Comparing this action to that of other industries protesting against implementing a more expensive safety feature, the claim calls out the group fighting against the implementation of this feature.

News Reporters
“it could be that brands want this rulemaking to pass.” This is an evaluative claim, as the author is suggesting that the lack of strongly formed opposition to the safety regulations being proposed could mean that the companies do not truly oppose it. This is because if the regulation was to pass, the brands would not have to start creating this technology until SawStop’s patents expire, which is years away. The strength of the patents that SawStop possesses prevents other brands from creating similar technology, so although the regulations would pass, they would not really be required to do anything about it until the future.

Outraged Plaintiffs
“would have been limited to a 1/8-inch cut on only one finger” This is a claim made by an injury lawyer who is saying what could have happened had the technology been mandatory. This is a hypothetical claim as it is saying what could have happened. In doing so, the lawyer puts the blame on those opposing the regulations, citing the damage that is caused by the lack of safety requirements.

Government Officials
“In 2015, 4,700 people in the US lost a finger or other body part to table-saw incidents.” This is a numerical claim, factually citing how many table-saw incidents resulted in someone losing a finger or other body part in 2015. Showing the dangers of table-saw incidents, this claim is aimed at informing consumers of the dangers that table-saw accidents may pose. By doing so, it informs the reader that these saws must be used carefully as they can be very dangerous.

Manufacturers
“…many consumers won’t want to pay for the SawStop technology” This is an evaluative claim, as it takes the other side’s perspective saying that the technology is too expensive and should not be used. I disagree with this claim, as it is placing the financial implications over that of potentially saving thousands of people from accidents. Health and safety is more important than an increase in price, therefore the justification that it should not be implemented due to an increase in price is invalid in my opinion.

Industry Lawyers
“medical bills they may never be able to pay so long as they are unable to work.” This is a causal claim, stating that victims of table-saw accidents will not be able to pay the medical bills associated with the accidents due to their inability to work as a result of their injury. With many injuries caused by these saws resulting in amputations, some victims may truly never be able to continue their jobs, making this claim accurate in saying they may not be able to afford their medical bills.

Safer Saws – clementine

  • Manufactures: “They came back and said, ‘Well, we’ve looked at it, but we’re not interested because safety doesn’t sell,’ ” Gass says”. Gass is claiming here that major tool companies do not want to apply SawStops to their table saws because having one of their products safer, won’t make companies’ profit dramatically increase. This claim is a casual claim because other major tool companies believe that if they applied SawStops to their table saws, it would not affect their money income. The cause would not have a major effect. I disagree with this claim because people who buy table saws would defiantly appreciate the fact that companies are trying to help the customer by making their products safer. If I were a hobbiest, I would definitely buy a table saw if it has SawStops mechanism in it. I think that having this mechanism in a company’s table saw would dramatically increase their sales.
  • Customers: “Even if the Reaxx didn’t have the injury-preventing mechanism, it would still be an impressive tool” This statement is explaining that even though the saw is a limb saver, without the mechanism, it would still be a great table saw. This is an evaluative claim because the customer is judging the effectiveness of removing a certain aspect of a product. This is a reasonable claim because the Reaxx table saw is reportedly one of the best table saws you can buy in genera; mlechanisms aside according to this article.
  • Industry Spokesperson: “If you guys don’t cooperate with us, the industry is going to get together and squish you”. Black and Decker executive told this to Gass because Gass was overconfident in his product and didn’t let the industry have time to think about it. Black and Decker’s claim is a casual claim because the industry spokesperson said that there will be consequences to their actions. Casual claims include cause and effect. I think this claim was reasonable in the industries defense because Gass shoved his idea down the industries throat according to the spokesperson.
  • Consumer Safety Advocates: “What you have is somebody who has invented a dramatic technology that seems to reduce virtually all the injuries associated with table saws”. Bob Adler is claiming that the technology Gass has made is revolutionary and that based on what he knows, he thinks it can reduce the number of injuries from table saws. This is an evaluative claim because he is judging SawStops potential success and its’ characteristics. Since this claim is coming from a Safety Advocate, I think this claim is very persuasive considering that the product helps to reduce injuries from one of the most dangerous tools ever.
  • Injured Plaintiffs: “Table saw accidents are painful, life-changing and expensive”. This man who was injured by a standard table saw is advocating that SawStop would change so many lives by comparing his injuries from standard table saws. This is a factual claim because there is no doubt that being sliced by a table saw is painful. This claim is accurate since thousands of people are seriously injured by standard table saws each year.
  • Personal Injury Lawyers“People who have lost fingers, hands, and arms to table saws have been devastated by their injuries, multiple surgeries, and medical bills they may never be able to pay so long as they are unable to work” The lawyers firm is emphasizing that table saw injuries can seriously ruin someone’s life and ruin their career. This is a factual claim since the circumstances and conditions exist beyond doubt. This claim is accurate because everyone knows that a saw spinning at insanely high speeds can hurt someone significantly.
  • Government Officials“…the mandate could double the cost of entry-level table saws and destroy jobs in the power-tool industry”. Government officials are saying that if Gass’ technology becomes mandatory, he would have a monopoly and cause trouble in the business world lawfully. This claim is an ethical claim because if there is a mandate on Gass’ mechanism it can cause a monopoly which is unethical in itself. I agree with this claim because it will cause the loss of jobs and if table saws prices are doubled, than many companies will be affected.
  • News Reporters“In 2015, 4,700 people in the US lost a finger or other body part to table-saw incidents”. This phrase is the first sentence of this article and is stating that many people have been hurt from standard table saws. This is a factual claim because the article is stating something that can be proven and quantified. This claim in the first sentence grabbed my attention and can grab anyone else’s because the number of people who have been hurt is really outrageous.
