Low income families are more likely to suffer from mental health disorders. Most low income families cannot afford health insurance, even if they can the insurance companies do not always cover the full cost of medicine. It can be very expensive, so families struggling financially cannot afford to get the treatment they need. The underprivileged Americans are suffering and nothing is being done to help.

Psychiatric medication is difficult to obtain without a prescription. Many of the medications that are used to treat mental illnesses are abused and used recreationally, and are not given out easily. There is little communication between physicians and pharmacys, leaving the patient isolated. Many steps are required to obtain the right treatment and it can be a difficult process.
