Why Keeping Girls Squeaky Clean Could Make Them Sick : Shots – Health News : NPR

It seems counterintuitive that girls are believed to be more likely to develop diseases as they grow older like asthma since they are considered “cleaner” as a complete gender. If you are looking at this argument from a one dimensional point it may seem like a reasonable thing to say , however if your not then you can blatantly see how the idea completely ignores several different factors like the race of the girls, location in which they grow up and their families wealth because each one can impact the girls interactions with the environment heavily . At the end of the day a city girl is going to act very different in terms of to getting dirty(in the sense of the article) than a country girl and the same thing can be applied to boys as well. So to group all girls together and say that girls in general are more likely to develop sickness later due to early childhood cleanliness is ridiculous.

Prozac: What’s Race Got to Do With It? – Mother Jones

It seems counterintuitive that their is believed to be some form of discrimination between people receiving anti depressant medication due to a prescription gap between whites and minorities. This is based on a study conducted in 2008 were it was found that roughly 11 percent of white American patients being treated for depression were prescribed medication while only 4 % of black and Hispanic American patients were prescribed meds for the same conditions. Which when you first hear this stat it does sound unfair until you realize something. In the study they didn’t publish the actual number of patients being treated for depression, but rather they only released the percentages of those groups that actually received medication for depression, meaning that the actual populations of people receiving treatment could be extremely distant from one another making that percentage pointless. Especially when you consider that both Blacks and Hispanics are minority groups(32% of the population) in America when compared to Whites(around 61% ), meaning that they are likely in a much lower demand for these antidepressants than White people due simply to population size differences.

Vancouver combats its heroin problem by giving heroin addicts the best smack in the world (pri.org)

It seems counterintuitive that Vancouver is trying to fix their heroin problem by feeding the addicts some of the best heroin money can buy. Its not even a program to help these addicts quite but rather one that basically promises these addicts free heroin everyday. As of today their are 26 people in this program, and the people in it are the hardcore addicts you aren’t even attempting to get clean or takes alternatives. Vancouver is using taxpayers money to continue to fuel these people addiction in order to as the city views it” keep them docile and keep the sort of demons of heroin addiction at bay…” It’s astonishing that rather than use the tax money to put these addicts through any kind of treatment to at least try to get them clean, they would rather just supply them with more. Which will down the road only influence other Vancouver addicts to simply continue their addiction since there are one, no repercussions to it and two they are getting supplied heroin from the government itself.

May I please get some feedback on this. To be honest I’m not entirely sure I did this right.

thanks

The Universe – carsonwentz1186

It is pretty clear that the universe exists for 3 reasons: sipping iced tea on the porch, Tom Brady winning the super bowl, and humans wasting their lives sitting on the couch watching Star Wars while earth slowly deteriorates around them. The universe was made to be used as a place for humans to sit around and waste their lives away while earth slowly deteriorates around them. Earth is the center of the universe for the rest of the lifeforms out in space as a glorified reality TV show for extraterrestrials to laugh at from their saucers surrounding the planet.

UNIVERSE KOBE BRYANT

I believe the universe exists because God wanted to give others the experience that he had. Freedom, power, and the ability to adapt and change. We are here merely because God wanted us to be. The universe exists because God wanted it to, he felt as though the empty abyss, that is now known as the universe, needed to have some form of cells that interacted with each other. Hence us humans, without human beings, God would have felt as though his existence was pointless. Everyone lives for someone, parents live for their kids, we live for our parents, so on and so forth.

  1. Economy –

It’s pretty counterintuitive that people are saying that Trump had a bad economy because he had the lowest unemployment rate. Also, President Trump had the best stock market in his four years as President of The United States of America. The unemployment rate has dropped steadily from its peak of 10% in late 2009. Over the past 10 years it has fallen to 3.6% and has been bounced between 3.5% and 3.7% over the past nine months. During Trump’s three years in office, it has fallen 1.2% and the decrease was essentially a continuation from the Great Recession’s recovery. Trump’s historic employment rate for black Americans. Even during his three years as president he created more jobs than any sitting president has done in his first three years in office. That’s why Donald J. Trump is the best president when it comes down to the business and how to create jobs for the country.

2. Euthanasia-

It’s pretty counterintuitive that people are saying Euthanasia is right because they are wrong. First let us begin by stating that death has been and always will be a great enemy to humankind. It is for this very reason that St Paul, in the book 1 Corinthians chapter 15 verse 26 speaks of death as “the last enemy”. However, let’s be clear, although death is an enemy, as Christians we do not fear death, and we NEVER bring it upon ourselves without a divine purpose. Now in the case of Euthanasia, what people often fear is not death itself, but the process leading to death – the pain, the suffering, the estrangement from all that makes life worth living. Therefore, people often will hurry the process of a “quick and easy” death and somehow consider this to be the more honorable way to end one’s life. We will speak to this point of honor in just a minute. For now, let us focus on this idea of death being something that we fight against, we do not welcome it although it is inevitable. Ironically the word Euthanasia comes from two Greek words – the Prefix “EU” meaning good or happy and “Thanatos” meaning death. A good-death for the Christian is therefore not one where his/her last decision as human being, created in the image of God, actively accelerates the process of death. Rather a good death is one where we can say with St Paul “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”. And this, until the very last breath that God has granted me. To better understand what death represents to the Christian, let’s read together from the book of Wisdom chapter 1 verses 12 to 16: “12 Do not invite death by the error of your life, nor bring on destruction by the works of your hands;13 because God did not make death, and he does not delight in the death of the living.14 For he created all things that they might exist, and the generative forces of the world are wholesome, and there is no destructive poison in them; and the dominion of Hades is not on earth.” (Wisdom 1: 12-14). This passage reveals to us that the purpose of our lives in God is to live! Christ Himself says “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) The resurrection Hymn chanted in all Orthodox Churches boldly proclaims, “Christ is Risen from the dead, trampling down death, by death.” Now although our physical death is inevitable, through the Incarnation and the life-giving Sacrifice of our Lord, death itself has lost its sting. Physical death, rather than being a gateway to an eternal death, can now become a gateway to eternal glory. Again, my beloved, we do not ever hasten death as it is totally foreign to what God has created us to be.

It is equally important to note that all life belongs to God. In the prayer of reconciliation written by St Severus of Antioch, found in the Liturgy of Cyril, we call God “the author of life”. Now as He is the author of life, we as Christians leave it to Him to will both the beginning and the end of every life. No other being has the right or authority to take on God’s role – even if they erroneously believe that their life belongs to them alone! After all, scripture testifies that the Lord Himself says in Ezekiel 18:4 “Behold, all souls are mine”.

3. Gun Regulation-

It seems counterintuitive that a mentally ill person can be rejected from school, but is able to purchase a gun and ammunition and hurt innocent people is not right and should be stopped before it gets out of hand. They should do background checks to make sure that they are eligible to get a gun in the state in which they reside. More government regulation will prevent people from buying a gun illegally without a permit to buy a gun. Even if the guns were harder to buy then it’ll prevent mass shootings in the future.

Elderly Animals – A Meditation on Elderly Animals

Staying or keeping someone alive only to suffer seems rather counterintuitive. There’s a conflict when it comes to the elderly- whether they’re human relatives or animal companions- and that is at what point is life too burdensome to continue? At what point does caring and showing compassion towards a dying creature become counterintuitive and shift from care and compassion to selfishness and cruelty? When photographing elderly animals after caring for her own aging parents, photographer Isa Leshko acknowledges the importance of accepting that they are mortal. After making the conscious decision to not photograph her own aging and dying family, Leshko expresses and emphasizes the importance of remaining respectful to the memory of the elderly by displaying who they truly are as beings through pictures rather than ignoring their mortality, and it is clear that she regrets making her decision about her parents.

“These photographs are a testament to… finding meaning and joy in life in the face of physical limitations and challenges.” (Not officially part of the summary, but I liked the quote and thought it summed up Leshko’s work rather well.)

Unemployment Rate – Unemployment falls, but economy only adds 36k new jobs

It seems counterintuitive that unemployment is considered to decrease when those who are unemployed stop searching for employment. A drop in unemployment when followed by the addition of only a fraction of expected new jobs- in the case of the article, 36k jobs opposed to the expected 145k- may make it seem like less jobs are required when in reality it’s the complete opposite. There are so few jobs that a portion of that unemployment decrease was caused by a decrease in job interest and people giving up on finding work, and that is nothing to celebrate.

Extreme Parenting – Is Extreme Parenting Effective?

It seems counterintuitive that in an attempt to give children a “good life” and have them be “successful,” extreme parents completely ignore anything that their child truly wants from life and instead force what they as parents want out of their child. By being extremely strict to “guide” your child to greatness, it’s possible that more negatives, such as a lack of individuality and creativity, could come and overpower the anticipated good.

On the other hand, having a “pragmatic philosophy” where everyone is rewarded for simply participating- easily viewed as the opposite of strict education- can also have negative effects. It can cause a sense of laziness or help children develop a belief that life is easier than it really is and get overwhelmed when faced with the real world, so a healthy medium is important. Sometimes it’s important to also acknowledge that happiness is just as if not more important than a parent’s perceived notion of excellence through academics or performance.

Summary 1, The surprising sciences of happiness:

It seems counterintuitive that when a person makes a decision that they are going to be unhappy with the decision that they make. Throughout a person’s life they have to make decisions. Some are happy with the decision they make in the moment, but later on they may be unhappy later. According to Dan Gilbert, who is the author of “Stumbling onto Happiness”, he informas us on how a person finds happiness in the most unlikely places. He uses an example of how would be happier a person that won the lottery or a person that is parligiect. At the moment the people that one the lottery are happier than the people that just became parapligect, but a year later they are both equally as happy. This is due to them coming to terms with what has happened and finding happiness in what happened to them. This follows  into synthesising happiness, which is where people think they have found happiness, when truly they have not yet.

Damn Gilber tmentions this to educate people on what truly makes them happy. This is counterintuitive, due to that if you decide to do one thing   instead of another, you could have been happier with doing the other thing. Dan explains this by showing a diagram of a photograph class at Harvard, which took photos of their favorite places on campus. After developing the film they were told they had to give their best image to hand in for credit for the class. One group is told that they can change their mind about which image they want to submit, they just have to reach out to the teacher to change it, where the other class is told they have to decide right on the stop and can not change their mind. Overall, the class that was told they could not change their mind, were happier with their picture then the class that could change it out. This is due to people like having a chance to change their mind, where in the long run they would have been happier with their work if they were in the class where they could not change their mind.

Summary 2,  The Cruelest Show on Earth:

It seems counterintuitive that when the goverment punished Feld Entertainment for animal cruelty but let them of if they make a size able donation to a chartiyt to stop animal cruelty. With the conditions that the elephants are living in and how they are beign treated is unexceptable. Feld Entertainment has been video of how they take care of there animals,  they are not being taken care of like the say they were. Under otah Kenny Feld, The CEO of Feld entertainment, finally came clean on how the truely take care of the animals. They use bullhooks, whipping them, and sometimes electric prods to train the elephants, which is complicity different then what they have said in the past. But Fled Entertainemtn was let of with just a fine, becuase the goverment falied to do anything about it. It hard to believes that a counplain that is clearly being abuse is let of with jsut a slap on the wrist.

Even after Kenny the elephansts death, there was still no inforced laws put in to protect the elephants. The treatment of e;lephants has not changed that much sinces P.T. Baurdum started using elephants in his circu, which was in 1850. When they first started using Elephants they would capture them in Africa and ship them over 12,00 miles back to new york city. At least one elephant died every trip. Even thogught this was in the 1800’s it is still upsetign too see know one was doing a think. The reason elephants where benign used were because they attracted a large aduidents do to the faination. Bu that came for a prive for the elephants because they were treated horrible.

Summary 3, Does Using Paper Take CO2 out of the Environment?:

It is counterintuitive when one thing about recycling is said but then told a completely different the next minute. Some say that paper contains a lot of carbon dioxide, where others believe that if you cut a tree and plant another one then it will keep the carbon dioxide levels down. According to the articles, 16.7 million tons of carbon are sequestered in wood products found in landfills last year. This does include all paper products. However, further, in the article, the author is deemed incorrect by Ann Ingerson. Ingerson is a resource economist at the Wilderness society. Ann states that paper is not a good option to store carbon dioxide, due to it decomposing quickly. We are told two different opinions from people that make it counterintuitive on how to use paper to stop the production of carbon dioxide. Paper production is sent to China to show how it can be recycled into boxes that can later be used to send toys and electronics back to America. Paper has helped create a Sisyphean trans-Pacific cycle. This is not the best thing, but it does decrease the number of trees being cut down to create shipping containers.

Vancouver combats heroin by giving its addicts the best smack in the world

It seems counterintuitive that doctors in Vancouver, Canada are giving patients free heroin, but that’s exactly the point

People who battle heroin addiction spend a lot of their time looking for their next fix. This often means selling their bodies for money, breaking into cars, or robbing people in order to satisfy their need for heroin. What if there was a way to allow them to get their heroin fix without harming anyone else? This is exactly the treatment that is being prescribed for such individuals in Vancouver.

While only currently available for 26 registered patients, doctors are prescribing them with a 3 times a day dosage of heroin in order to allow them to function normally while working or carrying out daily tasks. This practice has its origins in Europe, and is now reaching the west.

For those who do not wish or simply can’t bring themselves to kick their heroin habits, this is the best alternative. This practice allows such individuals to fulfill their need, while being the least dangerous drug addicts that they possibly can be.

Men Defining Rape: A History

It seems counterintuitive that men have been defining what constitutes the rape of a woman for thousands of years. For example, The Code of Hammurabi states that the rape of a woman is simply property damage to her father. Deuteronomy 22:28-29 states that if you rape a virgin woman you must give her father 50 shekels and bring her to the altar.

There are countless examples of this throughout history. Rape has had a very unstable and constantly shifting definition. Dr. Lawson Tate, a 19th century gynecologist, went as far to state that it isn’t rape if the woman doesn’t squirm to escape a man. This man helped the police with criminal investigations, including rape, and was certain that a woman couldn’t be actually raped if she didn’t want it.

Feminists have been fighting to raise the age requirement for statutory rape consideration since the 1890’s. Later feminists proposed to get rid of virginity requirements and and exceptions under marriage, in which they eventually succeeded. They also wanted to make rape definitions gender neutral.

It took until 2012 for the FBI to update its definitions of forcible rape. The new legal definition contains more forms of sexual assault. This includes mental or physical incapacity, intoxication from drugs or alcohol, or age.

That Daily Shower Can Be a Killer

It seems counterintuitive that a daily shower could be viewed as a deadly risk, but that’s exactly what it is for someone who is elderly. Falling is a very common cause of death for older people.

The author proposes that the risk of falling the shower could be about 1 in 1000. However, with a task such as a shower being so frequent as every single day, the risk is absolutely there. At that rate, it would take less than three years to fall in the shower and possibly die.

The people of New Guinean have a kind of “Constructive Paranoia” when it comes to repeated risks. Living in America means that we have a lot of ways to recover from disaster and there aren’t as many threats to us that we really have to worry about. New Guineans don’t have a lot of doctors or security personnel to heal/protect them. Studies show that we undermine a lot of mundane ways to die in preference of worrying about things such as crazed gunmen or terrorist attacks, which are things that we can’t control.

We should develop some kind of “hyper vigilance” but not let it control our lives. We can do this by assessing every situation for what could happen, and how frequently we will be ending up in these situations. The goal is to keep our risk of dying far below 1 in 1000 each time we carry out a task.

1.) There’s No Such Thing As Free Speech

It is counterintuitive that the phrase “free speech”, which is a Constitutional right, actually doesn’t hold much meaning legally. But that free speech is supported when it is applied to justify actions and policies that do follow what societies deem acceptable.

Free speech has lost it’s independent value and has been turned into a political strategy. When it is used surrounding ideas that you believe in, it does nothing but further promote your argument. However, when it is used to advance a position on a topic you do not agree with, it becomes a hinderance.

It becomes an issue of the law when speech crosses the line into action. The significance of the First Amendment is that it makes the distinction that speech is not a type of action and therefore makes it possible to separate speech from consequences. When a court refutes legislation because it defies protected speech, it is not because the speech in question is without consequences but because the consequences have been discounted in relation to a good that is judged to surpass them.

Free speech loses it’s meaning when it is used to argue actions instead of just words. Once speech gets the distinction of being an action it is no longer protected by the First Amendment.

2.) “Humane” Food Lables

It is counterintuitive that humane food labels on packaged animal products, doesn’t always guarantee that the animals are treated better than the ones without the distinctive label. The conditions aren’t better for the animals and the profit is better for the people.

The only label that is supported by legally enforceable guidelines is organic and even that one has loopholes. An example being that chickens have access to outdoor space but not requiring that the birds actually spend any time outside. Other labels such as all-natural, sustainable and cage free can be justified however the food producer sees fit.

There needs to be an understanding that there are both independent and industry-produced quality assurance programs circulating under the name “humane”. These programs have no type of audit, which allows them to have little input from the public and instead use experts on animal production. This completely eliminates taking into account the animals well fare.

Organic and sustainable farming practices are better for the environment, and many can lead to a better quality of life for animals. In terms of animal welfare, the Certified Humane label and the Animal Welfare Approved are while administered by third parties and not the government.

All of this considered, it is worth looking into what the labels and brands you are buying are actually doing for the animals. Being an informed consumer is the best option when placing importance on the labels of the food you eat.

(Additional source: What Meat Like “Organic” and “Grass-Fed” Actually Mean- And Whether You Should Care. Certified Humane by Moria Lawler)

3.) Men Define Rape

It is counterintuitive that men decide what the conditions are to defining when a woman is raped by a man. History proves that the women’s opinions, thoughts and feelings are not taken into any sort of consideration.

One of the first sets of law written, The Code of Hammurabi in about 1780 BC defines rape of a virgin as property damage against her father. The father would be compensated and the woman was deemed an adulteress. Even the Latin root of the word rape, raptus referred to the abduction of a women against the will of the man that controlled her.

It wasn’t until January of 2012 that the FBI’s definition of forcible rape. The new definition includes other forms of sexual assault, other genders, and instances where the “victim is incapable of giving consent because of temporary or permanent mental or physical incapacity, including due to the influence of drugs or alcohol or because of age.”

The battle for women who are victims of rape and sexual assault continues everyday. The world has been and continues to be male dominated in positions of power and the law for so long it is difficult for history to not repeat itself.

Do Multivitamins Really Work?

It seems counterintuitive that taking multivitamins could be dangerous for you. There is no evidence of multivitamins having health benefits and protection against diseases. Our whole lives, we were told by our parents and doctors to always take vitamins. But now it seems that vitamins have no effect on our bodies. In the United States, a third of Americans take multivitamins daily and because of that, companies such as the Vitamin Shoppe has sales growing in double digits every year. In truth, vitamins could be dangerous for people

Taking in an excessive amount of nutrients from multivitamins could lead to increased risk of illnesses such as an increased risk for heart disease. Taking Vitamin A while pregnant could cause birth defects. The FDA does not regulate supplement packaging warning against potential harmful side effects of multivitamins. This makes you wonder why are vitamins are not being regulated and why they are still on the market if they harm rather than help you? This seems unethical not to warn people of the potential risk of taking Multivitamins.

Clean Girls get Sicker?

It seems counterintuitive that keeping little girls clean could make them sick. Boys when growing up are encouraged to play outside more and in turn are more exposed to germs and illnesses. Girls are often inside more and not exposed to bacteria as much. This is the Hygiene Hypothesis.

Girls are more susceptible to getting sick because they do not have as strong immune systems as men do. This is because they are not outside as much. Being outside and around bacteria will help strengthen your immune system.

This is even more evident today because of the Coronavirus Pandemic. Little kids are inside more. Their immune systems are getting weaker since they are not getting exposed to germs that would otherwise strengthen their immune systems. Therefore, they are more likely to get sick.

Gun Regulation

It seems counterintuitive that a man named Jared Loughner was able to purchase a gun even though he was declared unstable to attend college and rejected by the army. Guns are not as regulated as some toys are. Guns have a higher chance of injuring and killing someone than toys are. Guns were designed to kill, toys were not. So, it is only fair to enforce more regulation of the sale of guns.

Each and everyday, more and more people are victims of shootings. Often, the shooter has a mental illness and thinks that killing people is an ok thing to do and more people are buying guns to protect themselves. People kill people. Guns are just the tool that kills.

To enforce stronger gun regulations, it is proposed that gun purchases should be limited to one purchase per month. Also, it is proposed that background checks should be improved so that people like Jared Loughner cannot get a hold of a firearm. Even though these gun regulations are unconstitutional in violating second amendment rights, it must be necessary to ensure the safety of people in this country.
