The Battle in the Pool

Anxiety is a type of mental disorder that can affect each person differently; it can be something that is developed over time or a person can have natural high anxiety. With swimming, anxiety can muster into something that can turn from the love of a sport into something that causes a large amount of anxiety for an athlete. Over the course of a swimmer’s career, the pressure that they face will start to build as they get further in their careers. From turning the success based on how they are performing into having to perform everything to help their team win a championship, their anxiety can be dismissed as nothing but nerves. Without getting proper help, athletes’ anxiety could have a negative effect on the outcome of their performances.

The Pressure of the Swim

Each athlete has a different approach when it comes to their sport. With swimming, it is as much of an individual sport as it is a team sport. When you race, the goal is to score points to help your team win the meet. The pressure of succeeding and performing well for the school can lead a swimmer down a dark hole that will fester into anxiety, which will affect their performance in both their sport and school. Some swimmers are not as deeply affected as others, but at some point in their career they will have to deal with some type of anxiety. It is often overlooked in athletes that anxiety can affect their performance, but that is an idea that is very far from the truth.

Safer Saws- Icedcoffeeislife

  • Manufacturers (Steve Gass, Bosch, others):
  • “SawStop still makes the only saws with skin-sensing technology, and accounts for a tiny fraction of total saw sales. Tens of thousands of digits have been sliced off in the past decade, but the rest of the power tool industry has snubbed the technology and carried on as before.” This is an example of comparative claim because it is stating how Sawstop technology works and how it is different from other types of table saws. This shows what Sawstop technology looks like compared to Bosch technology for their saw.
  • Customers:
  • “The invention of the SawStop technology, power-tool makers could argue that table saws were just an inherently dangerous product, and customers accepted the risk when they chose to buy and operate them. But now that technology like SawStop exists, plaintiffs have begun to argue that the absence of the technology constitutes a dangerous design defect.” This is a categorical claim because it is listing the saw that the sawstop technology can help a person who is looking into buying one of their saws.
  • Industry Spokespeople:
  • “When Bosch chose to introduce the Reaxx saw in disregard of our patents, they left us with no alternative but to take action in court. We have defended our innovation, our hard work, and our investments in developing SawStop technology, and we are pleased that the ITC ordered the exclusion of products that use our patented inventions without a license and confirmed the strength of those patents”. This is an example of Evaluated Claim because Glass is speaking out on how Reaxx saw and how it was copying the idea of the safesaws, he put into question the motives of why the Reaxx saw was made.
  • Consumer Safety Advocates:
  • “Ten people every day – according to the CPSC’s own data – have their fingers amputated in power saw accidents. 10 a day!  I’ve wanted to push the CPSC for a mandatory standard ever since hearing a story on NPR in May of 2006.” This is a factual claim because it is explaining a  situation with how many people that are being injured with saws and how with the safe saw technology that the number of finger amputations can be lowered.
  • Injured Plaintiffs:
  • “In 2015, 4,700 people in the US lost a finger or other body part to table-saw incidents. Most of those injuries didn’t have to happen, thanks to technology invented in 1999 by entrepreneur Stephen Gass.” This is an example of factual claim because it is stating the number of people that were injured by a table-saw, but with the new technology from Gass it has helped lower that number.
  • Personal Injury Lawyers:
  •  “Each year, more than 67,000 workers and do-it-yourselfers are injured by table saws, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (PDF), resulting in more than 33,000 emergency room visits and 4,000 amputations. At an average cost of $35,000 each, these accidents lead to more than $2.3 billion in societal costs annually including medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.” This is an example of a factual claim because it is stating the amount of people that get injured by table saws each year and how much the injuries will cost to fix and try and get the person’s hand back to normal.
  • Government Officials:
  • “The US International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled in favor of SawStop and effectively halted Bosch from “importing, selling, marketing, advertising, distributing (except for exportation), and soliciting United States agents or distributors for imported table saws.”  This is an evaluative claim because it is stating why there is a halt on when Bosch can modify their table saws due to the court ruling in favor of sawstop.
  • News Reporters:
  • “Sure enough, the blade came to a dead stop in about three one-thousandths of a second, leaving the dog with only a minor nick.” This is an evaluative claim because it is showing how fast the blade will stop if it senses a finger near the blade.

Manufacturers: Bosch estimates that it should take a minute to reboot the system if it is falsely tripped. This is a casual claim because Bosch is claiming that it will take X amount of time for a regular person to reboot their system, which is convenient.

Customers: “Saws cut off 4,000 fingers a year”. This is a factual claim because it is stating a fact , that 4,000 fingers are cut off per year.

Industry Spokespeople: “Sawstop is currently available to any consumer who chooses to purchase it.” This is a factual claim because it is in fact available to consumers. If people choose not to buy it that is their choice, it doesn’t make it any less of a fact.

Consumer Safety Advocates: Each year more than 67,000 workers are injured by table saws according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission”. This is an example of a factual claim because they are stating a fact that 67,000 workers get injured by table saws.

Injured Plantiffs: Resulting in more than 33,000 emergency room visits and 4,000 amputations. At an average cost of $35,000 each, these accidents led to more than $2.3 billion in societal costs annually.” This is a factual claim because it is clearly stating that there are X amounts of emergency room visits and it costs X amount to fix.

Personal Injury Lawyers: “Table saws cause more injuries than any other woodworking tool”. This is a factual claim that is claiming that table saws cause more injuries than any other woodworking tool.

Government Officials: In 2012, California lawmakers tried to pass a law that would require all table saws sold after January 1, 2015 to have flesh sensing technology. The lawmakers are making a proposal so therefore it is a proposal claim.

The wrestlers who worked out during the pandemic and wrestled during the pandemic will be better of when it turns into real competition they will dominate their opponents. Some of the wrestlers during the pandemic were lifting to get bigger for the next wrestling season after the pandemic. 1. Can we honestly say that cancel culture is fixing the social problems our country faces? If you’ve been paying attention to the news or social media these past few years you will have noticed the sharp incline of cancel culture movements of people over actions deemed ” socially wrong”. These people are then targeted by these online mobs and stripped of as much as possible(jobs, college offers, family, etc.) Then rather than perhaps teach them about their wrong doings, they are simply left to rot. Does cancelling someone for something they said or did, really fix the problem, or does it simply just create a potentially bigger menance then before?

2. Anyone and everyone has at one point said or done something socially wrong in their life. If someone tells you that they haven’t they either forgot about it or are a liar. Mistakes and screwups are not only what make us human, but at the same time our ability to learn from our mistakes as well. Cancel culture specifically ignores both of those ideas and simply views someone being cancelled as an irredeemable evil. Thus making the people who cancel them feel justified in their actions. However by painting canceled people in that light, they take away that persons options, and rather give them a chance to learn from their mistake, it forces them to view it as if that is the only thing they have ever done.

Open Strong – mrmba1

Initial Opening-

Drummers are typically viewed as the druggie of the group- the chained maniac behind every great band who is often high and always making questionable health choices. However, that may not actually be the case. In fact, drummers may be the healthiest in most band groups, and the act of drumming itself could actually increase your lifespan and help you live a healthier, more peaceful life. Drumming requires massive amounts of physical proficiency, mental capability, and synergy between the two. It relieves a great deal of stress by acting as a medium for letting out inner frustrations as well as a means of meditation for the musician.

Strong Revised Opening-

Of all the ways to extend and increase the quality of one’s life, few would’ve guessed that drumming would help in doing just that. Drummers are typically stereotyped as the wild card or animal of every band- with little help from the muppets. They’re the one that’s in the clouds more than on the ground, and more often than not making questionable and risky life choices. However, compared to other members of a band such as guitar players and vocalists, the drummer is the healthiest of all. Comparable to the likes of cycling and swimming, drumming is a great means of physical exercise. It is also a great mental workout when it comes to coordination, and a perfect social amplifier and medium when it comes to the community of performing music. Assisting in all aspects of health, drumming is a great choice to lead a healthy, long lasting life.

I’m not sure if I understood the task properly, but here is what I have and I am willing to change it if necessary.

Safer Saws – mrmba1

Manufacturer of SawStop

“…our saws have saved thousands of fingers.” The manufacturer obviously claims good things about their saws, and they even have a testimonial page displaying some of the fingers that they have saved. They believe in the safety of their product and believe that their product will continue to save even more fingers than the thousands they already have.

Customers

“This is the Cadillac of contractor saws.” On top of the safety, many consumers also praise the quality of the saws. The saws are built in such a way that safety, quality, and looks are all built into one, much like- as the customer claims- a Cadillac. Their attention to detail and safety make the SawStop like a luxury saw.

Industry Spokespeople/ Opposing Manufacturers

“…they would face liability for accidents with conventional saws.” Manufacturers who do not currently use the SawStop technology could be sued by customers who face injuries. Their customers could make claims of safety negligence by the producers of saws, since the technology to have prevented their injury is out there and readily available.

Consumer Safety Advocates

“…imagine the new defenses they’ll have in injury litigation” With other manufacturers opposing the safety features of the SawStop, customers that face physical injuries could use this decline of safety to their advantage. They could more easily sue and more likely than not, they could win. The claim states that there is a whole arsenal now available to customers that do face physical injury.

Injured Plaintiffs

“It sure is going to be nice having my finger.” The customer claims that without the SawStop technology and the attention to detail and safety, they would not have their finger and in turn it would not be very nice for them. The saw is what was able to save his finger from amputation, acting as a great display and example of real life people who are saved by this technology, and the impact that normalizing this could have.

Personal Injury Lawyers

“Table saws cause more injuries than any other woodworking tool.” Since table saws are the number one cause of injury, it just makes sense that it would be a focal point for increasing safety features. Coming from a lawyer, this claim has to duality of also claiming that with the availability of features that could increase safety, victims who choose to employ them could face an almost guaranteed win.

  1. Bosch: “The saw reacts so quickly that your eye can’t see the blade plummet down into the saw body”. Bosch is explaining that their saws detect flesh so quickly that your finger cannot get injured. This is an example of an Evaluative claim because the manufacturer does not specifically say how fast the saw can detect human flesh. They are using the judgement of a situation. This claim is being made so that customers can be attracted to Bosch’s new safe saw.
  • Customers: “Saws cut off 4,000 fingers a year” This is an example of a factual claim because this quote is a fact and includes an accurate number of human fingers that get amputated a year because of saw accidents.
  • Industry Spokespeople: “The industry is also trying to keep the Consumer Product Safety Commission from requiring injury reduction systems on all table saws—either SawStop or something similar.”  This claim is an example of a Casual Claim because it casually says that the power tool industry is trying to prevent the safety commission from requiring industry reduction systems. I do not agree with this claim because I feel that any forms of injury reduction should be used in all saws so that people do not injure themselves. It is a great way for companies to make a profit and save money because of the reduction of potential lawsuits from injuries from saws.
  • Consumer Safety Advocates: “Each year, more than 67,000 workers and do-it-yourselfers are injured by table saws, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission” This is an example of a factual claim because the Consumer Product Safety Commission is claiming something factual by saying that “more that 67,000 workers and do-it yourselfers are injured by table saws”. This statement is implying that saws are still not as safe to use and that many people have tragic accidents when using these saws.  This group is pushing for even more reasonable regulation and safety on saws to prevent accidents.
  • Injured Plaintiffs: “If your device prevents even one person from going through what I have gone through it is a world class accomplishment.” The injured spokesperson suggests that if a device prevents someone from injuring themselves like they have gone through, it would be an amazing accomplishment. This is a casual claim because it is cause and effect. If there is a technology to stop the cutting a human flesh, it would be an outstanding achievement.
  • Personal injury lawyers: “For more than a decade, flesh-sensing technology has been available that could prevent almost all table injuries. Unfortunately, the manufacturers have refused to adopt it.” This quote is an Evaluative Claim because it implies that saw manufacturers have failed to implement technologies such as the SawStop in their saws. This is reasonable in which many saws do not have injury prevention.
  • News Reporters: “Steve Gass is a true believer in his design” This suggests that Gass is very confident that his SawStop will be very successful in preventing injuries. This is an example of an evaluative claim because the reporter is making a judgement call on the reliability of Gass believing in the SawStop.
  • Steve Gass: “A little nervous” This statement by Steve Gass shows that he is still nervous and otherwise still has a sense of uncertainty when putting his finger in the saw blade. This is an evaluative claim because it is based on judgement and it is arguable. There is a chance that Gass’ SawStop technology might not work and the blade will cut his finger off.

  1. Manufacturers (Steve Gass, Bosch, others)

“Bosch estimates that this process should take a minute.” This is Bosch on how long it takes for the customer to start there system again if it is falsely tripped. This is a casual claim as it is just saying the usual amount of time it will take a regular person to change the cartridge and get the saw ready to go again. This makes it easier than replacing some of the machine or a large amount of it which can be tedious and expensive

  1. Customers

“SawStop has recorded 2,000 “finger saves”—customer reports of accidents likely to have caused disfiguring injuries with conventional saws.” This is a factual claim as it says that 2,000 fingers have possibly been saved because of the saw. This comes from actual costumers that advocate from actual experience.

  1. Industry Spokespeople

“the market for popular, lightweight saws, which cost as little as $100, would be destroyed by the added expense of SawStop”. This is an evaluative claim because this is not factual but rather based on judgment. We do not know if this market would really be destroyed or just adapt but it is judged based off pricing of this system that it could be destroyed.

  1. Consumer Safety Advocates

“A Table Saw Blade Guard Survey recently completed by CPSC to determine modular guard system usage and preferences concluded 71% of users preferred using the modular blade guard compared to the traditional blade guard or no guard at all” This can be looked at as a comparative claim. This is because it is being used as a source to advocate that customers would want a safer saw with the blade stopping technology as they already tend to want safer saws when purchasing.

  1. Injured Plaintiffs

“resulting in more than 33,000 emergency room visits and 4,000 amputations. At an average cost of $35,000 each, these accidents lead to more than $2.3 billion in societal costs annually” This is a factual and numerical claim as it says how  many people have been dismembered by table top saws and also how much money it costs medically each year.

  1. Personal Injury Lawyers

“Now these manufacturers are facing dozens of lawsuits brought forth by people whose injuries could have been prevented had SawStop or similar safety mechanisms been in place.” This is a casual claim as it says that if these safety features were in place these people would not have lost limbs and also would not be suing these companies. If the safety precautions were put in place people would not be injured as severely.

  1. Government Officials

“CPSC asserted that SawStop’s patents were holding them back — potentially forcing them to pay royalties or engage in expensive patent litigation to introduce their system.” This is a casual claim saying that because of the patents or having to pay royalties it makes it expensive for companies to try to make this change.

  1. News Reporters

“The SawStop story is about an industry’s ability to resist a major safety advance that could have prevented countless disfiguring injuries” This is a casual claim as it says that it could prevent countless dismemberments, but the industry’s involved done want to do it because of a lack of money that could be made.

COVID-19 GYM SHUTDOWNS

Corona Virus has really brought a lot of heartbreak and stress to the lives of many individuals. The virus was/is so bad that they had to shutdown many business for extensive periods of time. One of the many shutdowns that really upset people was the shutdowns of gyms. The gym serves as an outlet for many people to help alleviate stress, anxiety, body dysmorphia and any kind of personal problems you may have, the gym is there to help you out. A 2014 systematic review showed that both aerboic and non-aerobic exercise was effective as an adjunctive treatment for anxiety disorders. The shutdown of gyms had many people in their houses stressing about what they are going to do to stay on track and also pushed people to spend monumental amounts of money to purchase equipment to mimic their gyms. I suffered from stress when gyms were closed because that is my outlet, it is my safe haven. When they shutdown many people I know that were advocates of the gym ended up gaining a lot of weight and completely throwing away all of their hard work. Gym

BUILD UP OF STRESS

The build up of stress was gradual and people started to lose hope in the re-opening of gyms. People are very joyous ad ecstatic when they go to the gym. The shutdowns of gyms caused people to become less happy and more stressed especially gym owners who were gypped out of jobs. Body dysmorphia is a real thing and I wouldn’t doubt people’s mental health were depreciating and they were being upset with their bodies. As covid spread throughout the world more and more gyms were getting shutdown and more and more people were getting stressed. It was a dark time for the world but we can only look ahead and hope for a better future.
