White Paper-NYAJ31

1a. The Baseball Hall of Fame should include players who have done wrong in eyes of the baseball world, but put an askrisk next to their name with a description of their wrong doing.

This can apply to Steriloid users or even to players who have committed crimes or felonies. Even though they may have gone against the rules or law, some players still did have many great accomplishments. It is hard to not put players like Pete Rose and Barry Bonds in the hall of fame.

I am extremely confident with this hypothesis. It is not too specific but not too broad. If I were too specific and said just steroid users than people would ask me, well what about a guy like Pete rose? If I were too broad I wouldn’t have a way to incorporate them. I believe an askerisk is he best way, otherwise you would have to put the players in separate sections and then you would have a million sections for something wrong everyone did. Overall I can prove in a 3000 word essay that this is he best way to go about this on going problem in the baseball community.

White Paper- Hazelnut Latte

Working Hypothesis

Andrea Yates, the convicted murder of her five children, committed the brutal crime because of the effects that mental illness had on her.

Working Hypothesis 2

Andrea Yates was fully aware of the circumstances of her actions in murdering her children, but used mental illness to get away with it.

Academic sources- purposeful summaries

Ask the expert: The case of Andrea Yates

Andrea Yates murdered her five children by drowning them each one by one in the bathtub of their home on June 20th, 2001. Prior to the murders, she had a history of mental illness, including major depression, psychotic tendencies, and suicide attempts. In 2002, she was only charged with 2 of the murders, which she was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison. Due to Dr. Park Dietz’s claiming that Yates “could have gotten the idea to kill her children and feign mental illness from an episode of Law and Order,” the case was overturned. His claim was made to be false because it was found that the episode never aired, and the claim could have swayed the jury’s decision. When re-tried, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity, due to postpartum depression/psychosis. Knowing right and wrong is a major factor in determining if not guilty by reason of insanity is a proper verdict, and determining if Yates new this is the real struggle.

Postpartum Depression

Andrea Yates admitted to her killing her children with the defense that she had failed them as a mother. Since her many suicide attempts did not work, killing all five of her children was the only way to get what she deserved for being the mother she thought she was. Andrea said that it had to be done because “The way [she] was raising them they could never be saved.” (Roche 2002). Yates’ diagnosis of psychosis was said to lead her to believe she was being controlled by satan. These thoughts led her to think that her children could no longer be saved by God.

Sympathy for the Devil

Andrea Yates’ story gets told throughout the article, while explaining her various mental illnesses. The main focus of the case was determining whether Yates had a mental illness at the time of the crime, and if it had such an affect on her that it led to her murdering her five children. She was diagnosed with postpartum depression, postpartum psychosis, and schizophrenia. The schizophrenia and psychosis was believed to be the source of her hallucinations and thoughts of the devil telling her to kill her children.

Effects of exercise‐based interventions on postpartum depression: A meta‐analysis of randomized controlled trials

Postpartum depression can occur after complications with birth. This mental illness can takeover the mother’s life, and affect her in so many ways, including affecting the relationship with the child. In this article, the physicians describe some of the effects of this mental illness which includes “…anxiety about parenthood and caring for an infant, identity crisis, a feeling of loss of control over life, and anxiety because of lack of support from a romantic or sexual partner.” This study shows how mothers suffering from this can then suffer from extreme anxiety about how their kids are growing up, and can therefor lead to major depressive disorder. In the case of Andrea Yates, this is exactly what the defense claims happened to her whens he murdered her children because she felt it was the only way to save them.

Murder and Psychosis: Neuropsychological Profiles of Homicide Offenders with Schizophrenia

Patients diagnosed with schizophrenia can be succumbed to violence depending on the severity of their illness. In many cases of homicide, schizophrenia has been found to be a diagnosis of the convicted murderers. The article states that many patients can have suicidal tendencies, delusions, hallucinations, “…and satan/antichrist/demon- or God- themed delusions.” This can include having delusions that the devil is inside of you and the only way to fix what you have wronged is to commit a murder. This leads to extremely violent tendencies, as found in many homicide cases.

Current State of Research Paper

I have collected a sufficient amount of evidence to complete my final research paper. I have written three parts to my paper, and all that is left is to go through each and add any other research that I have found. My hypothesis was able to be contradicted, but also proven to have some evidence to support it.

Honestly, I am still not sure what I want to write about and I feel extremely overwhelmed by this. I am confident that once I can find good ground for a topic and finally get into the groove, I can write an amazing paper.

School is not about learning anymore, it’s about passing and memorization.

Many kids in school struggle because of poor teachers, anxieties, and the lack of care by administration.

To get a good. job in America you need a degree, but it is getting harder and harder every year to send your kids there. Why is that it is so frowned upon in society to not go to college but it is nearly impossible for average income families to send their children due to money issues? So many people don’t live up to their potential because they weren’t fortunate enough to go to college. If it wasn’t so hard to get a degree we would be able to create more jobs, unemployment rates would drop.

1a: Harsh imprisonment and the mistreatment of minorities groups is resulting in socialism in the United States. The United States throughout history misrepresented minorities group through the Justice system and within their democracy. With these tendencies still occurring in small numbers, it is forcing Americans to turn away from liberty and to socialism, within recent years over 28% of Americans identified as socialist and it is no coincidence that is number has been steadily increasing since 2016. It could be possible that capitalism is at stake and this could be catastrophic for the United States economy and ultimately the people in our country.

1b: The rise of socialism could result in a lot more problems than what leftist extremist believe. A very modern day example of this would be the tragedy that occurred in Venezuela and left the country in ruins. “The first democratically elected president was Rómulo Betancourt founded the Communist Party in Costa Rica and helped found the Communist Party in Colombia. As president, he started destroying the economic institutions we had by implementing price controls, rent controls, and other regulations we hadn’t had before. On top of that, he and his allies created a new constitution that was hostile to private property.” All of this corruption haunts Venezuela to today and their inflation is the highest the world has seen in years.

4. The current state of my research paper I would say needs a lot more work in areas. The area that us improvements are my sources because although they are good sources I believe I can find better ones. The other things are providing enough evidence on the topic I chose because these topics are fairly upcoming and might lack some of the necessary data.

Brannan Vines has never been to war, but her husband, Caleb, was sent to Iraq twice, where he served in the infantry as a designated marksman.

Factual Claim- States directly who Brennan Vines husband is and what he does

Even doctors can’t say for sure exactly why he has flashbacks, why he could be standing in a bookstore when all of a sudden he’s sure he’s in Ramadi, the pictures in his brain disorienting him among the stacks, which could turn from stacks to rows of rooftops that need to be scanned for snipers.

Evaluative Claim- Involves judgement and characteristics of Caleb and his flashbacks

You can’t see Caleb’s other wound, either. It’s called traumatic brain injury, or TBI, from multiple concussions.

Categorical Claim- Gives an example of PTSD

“Of course, the Army only helps families of active-duty personnel. It’s the Department of Veterans Affairs that’s charged with treating the problems that can persist long past discharge. But “if you asked the VA to treat your kids, they would think it was nonsense,” says Hofstra’s Motta.”

“Of course”

  • this is a factual claim by itself because it is a phrase that can’t be doubted
  • “of course” means certainly and certainly means undoubtedly

“the Army only helps families of active-duty personnel.”

  • this is a categorical claim because the army only helps families of active-duty personnel
  • they don’t help other types of families

“It’s the Department of Veterans Affairs that’s charged with treating the problems that can persist long past discharge”

  • this is a factual claim because there is no doubt that the Department of Veterans Affairs treat the problems
  • it is their own duty and not any other department’s

“if you asked”

  • this is a recommendation claim because they are saying if you did this, then this would come out of it

“But ‘if you asked the VA to treat your kids, they would think it was nonsense'”

“Like Brannan’s symptoms”

The author uses an analogy claim. In this situation, Brannan’s symptoms are being compared to hypervigilance.

“Hypervigilance sounds innocuous, but it is in fact exhaustingly distressing, a conditioned response to life-threatening situations”

A categorical claim is used in this situation because of the fact that it’s listing all of the symptoms of Hypervigilance.

“Imagine your nervous system spiking, readying you as you feel your way along the walls, the sensitivity of your hearing, the tautness in your muscles, the alertness shooting around inside your skull”

Analogy and categorical claim were used in this situation. The feeling of being nervous, sensitivity of hearing, and the tautness in your muscles are being states as symptoms of PTSD. In fact, the author compares the symptoms of being scared and the symptoms of PTSD.

“And then imagine feeling like that all the time”

The author wants you to actually picture yourself feeling these symptoms all the time when trying to figure out the effects of PTSD on a person. I would say this is a recommendation or proposal claim only because the author wants you to actually picture the feeling. This would be a casual claim also because it claims that the people that have PTSD experience the same way all the time.

“Caleb has been home since 2006, way more than enough time for Brannan to catch his symptoms”

This is a casual claim because the author believes that being around someone for a long time can cause them to catch the symptoms.
