Working hypothesis #1:
Paying college athletes would help colleges give more academic scholarships and have athletes focus more on their sport.

Working hypothesis #2: scholarships are worth near nothing to athletes and they should get paid as well.

Im trying to further narrow this down into talking about just football and basket ball because they bring in the most revenue out of all the other sports.

3 Counter agrument- College athletes already recieve the benefits of going to school for free as well as living at school for free so their pay is equivalent to being on scholarship for 4 years.

Counter argument- Paying college athletes based on their sports revenue would lead to unfair pay of those athletes of other sports.

4 State of my paper: I am a little overwhelmed but also excited to dive into this paper. I am starting all of my re writes as well as the annotated bib. But i dont have 10- 15 sources, so can i add more sources and add them to my re writes? I think im in good shape, i just cannot fall behind as the work load starts getting heavier and I should be good.

  1. Enrollment in students that want to further their education after high school will decrease if schools don’t lower the tuition. Colleges need to stop hiring staff and focus on the inner circle. Kids are becoming more unlucky when relying on student aid.

1b. In-state tuition doesn’t benefit out of state students, so a lot of students are reconsidering their dream school.

  • I would take this position only because of the fact that some colleges use the higher cost of tutition to benefit the students. Benefit by gathering more student resources and top of the line dorms.

Counterargument- Going to a college in the state is better than going to a college out of the state.

4. My hypothesis has changed from the beginning of the semester. Only because I realized the way I was trying to attack this topic was wrong. I should focus on the way students are being treated and also the inside minds of many of the head staff of colleges.

1a. There are so many mattress stores, but never anyone inside, proving it to be one big money laundering scam, there is no way there is such high demand for mattresses.

1b. There have been many cases of money laundering in the U.S. in recent years. The idea that mattress stores are a big money laundering scam cannot be left unnoticed. Mattresses are only bought 3-4 times in our entire lives, so there cannot be that much demand.

2.

What Is Money Laundering?  https://legaldictionary.net/money-laundering/

Money Laundering is the act of disguising the source or true nature of money obtained through illegal means. Criminals try to disguise the identity, original ownership, and destination of money they collect through illegal action. Much money laundering is done through “drug trafficking” or illegal gambling. When this happens, the money is considered “dirty.” This simply means that it seems suspicious if it directly deposited into a bank or any other “financial institution.” In simpler words, the money must become “clean” to not be considered money laundering. With that being said, the money has to go through various “legitimate businesses” before depositing it. Money laundering is specifically used to hide illegally collected money. In the United States alone, it is estimated that, “at least $300 billion is laundered each year.” More than 81,000 people are convicted for some level of money laundering. The steps to money laundering are actually quite simple. First, you must try and collect the money, obviously. You have to put the money through different transactions without putting it in a bank, and return it to an accepting source so that the money seems legitimate. Ways most criminals avoid it is if you have large amounts of money, and you don’t want it to be detected, you deposit it in small amounts so it is not suspicious when a large amount of money is deposited into your account.

Why Are There So Many Mattress Stores in America?  https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-science-behind-behavior/201509/why-are-there-so-many-mattress-stores-in-america

A student that went from Europe to Houston claimed that there were more mattress stores than Starbucks stores. In Houston alone, there were 135 Starbucks stores, so if there were more than 135 Starbucks stores in Houston, just imagine the number of mattress stores. The student was left to question why there were so many mattress stores. Was it the people, the quality of the mattresses, or something entirely different? Most of a person’s life is spent in their bed, so when picking a mattress once every decade, it is a long, thought out process. When just moving into a new house, chances are likely that you will buy a new bed with your new house. When you raise a family, there is more mattresses you have to purchase. The ongoing question, however, is often are you realistically going to buy a new mattress? In my opinion, there is no way that there could be this much demand on mattresses. There are a lot of mattress stores, yes, but we must also keep in mind that there are too many stores that along with many other furniture, sell mattresses as well, even retail stores. How could so many stores be open for something we only buy maybe 3 or 4 times within our entire lives.

The Top Money Laundering Cases in Recent Times https://www.allsectech.com/the-top-money-laundering-cases-in-recent-times/

There have been many recent cases of money laundering that have been detected in the U.S. Some of the most recent, big name banks that have been involved in some cases. HSBC, in total, laundered a total of about $8 billion. They offered banking to clients in Saudi Arabia even though there were known terrorist links. They cut off certain links to discontinue any transaction to North Korea or Iran. BSSC laundered a total of $23 billion when they secretly changed their name on the black market for a way to increase their income. The bank had to close without finishing the investigation, but they still owed a pretty big fine. One of the biggest global banks, Standard Chartered laundered a total of $265 billion, this is due to “lack of oversight and lack of checks in place.” Lastly, in 2010, and this was one of the biggest launders of the time, Wachovia laundered a total of $390 million by drug cartels in Mexico through the bank branches. If banks are laundering this much money and it obviously takes a while for them to get caught, what about all the other non-chain businesses, imagine those and how much money they could be laundering and they’re getting away with it.

Why Are There So Many Mattress Stores? https://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-chicago-mattress-stores-0717-biz-20160715-story.html

Melissa Marik was going through her town when she spotted a mattress store, “Mattress Firm”, and a few blocks down, there was yet another. What is the reason? She states that she doesn’t see many people, if any, inside. I, too, feel as though there are so many stores for so little customers. The general manager of one of the stores did agree that there may be too many of these chain stores, and still we ask the question, for what reason? In the Houston area, there is said to be a store for every 50,000 people. After making calculations, there should be only 200. With that being said, there is a total of 235 stores in the Houston area. Even still, 200 is still a lot of stores to buy a product that is only bought, realistically, “once in a decade.” In 2015, Mattress Firm built a total revenue of about $11.5 million. Where is all of this money going? Could they really make all of those sales if they could go days without actually even having customers? It really makes you question where all of this money is coming from, and how it’s being made.

Anti-Money Laundering https://www.investopedia.com/terms/a/aml.asp

In short terms, anti-money laundering is the act of preventing the generation of money through illegal activity. However, to my understanding, anti-money laundering is performed using illegal actions. This is so you can see if there are any illegal transactions, and prevent them. Basically, you could say that anyone who is part of the anti-money laundering team is ultimately a snitch. Anti- money laundering goes over and prevents the acts of: market manipulation, trade of illegal goods, corruption of public funds, and tax evasion. One of the most common ways to money launder is to open a cash-based business owned by a criminal organization. To obey “AML” laws, the banks must report if there is a transaction of $10,000 or more. This can lower the number of embezzlement cases. One of the AML organizations is Financial Action Task Force (FATF). In 1989, the group was created and set standards to efficiently and effectively stop money laundering and promote these standards.

Hypothesis 1
Why teen this day she shoes as if it was gold or money?

Hypothesis 1a
Why tees this day are so obsessed with sneakers?

Purposeful Summary:
TEENAGE BOYS ARE OBSESSED WITH SNEAKERS
https://www.tesh.com/articles/teenage-boys-are-obsessed-with-sneakers/

It seems counterintuitive that teens these days are obsessed with sneakers. This is a way to express their individuality and not be bullied. This is also a way to tell us who they are as a person. This is what happening.

The one pair of sneakers tells people what we are into. Is the base of who you are as a person. It could be basketball, volleyball, skateboarding, hip-hop, and more, but the obsession with sneakers comes deeper because having cool sneakers is a safety issue: You will get beat up and look like a dork. Mothers in the other hand had been under the impression that cool sneakers make you a target for thieves! Teens totally understand this, but they say that is the same thing has if you have cheap sneakers you also will get beat up. What’s the difference, thieves beat you up and take the sneakers and in school teens beat you up just because you are wearing cheap sneakers.

There is way for parents to put boundaries on their kids’ obsession of sneakers by putting them in a budget to set a limit on how much you are willing to pay spend in sneakers. If the teen wants to spend more, he just going to have use his allowance or get a part time job. Another idea to control their obsession is by offering trades. If you trade your rights for your birthday one year, in exchange for helping you buy the sneakers of your dreams. This is a way of offering trades.

Purposeful Summary:
WHAT’S BEHIND TEENS BOYS’ OBSESSION WITH SNEAKERS?

https://bit.ly/2BRnscm

Teens these days see sneakers as precious as if it was gold. This is a way for them to be busy and worry about other things. Are a waste of money and you might not believe this, but teens have a pair of sneakers for each occasion?

When it comes to the sneakers and teens they buy them without needing them. Having expensive cool sneakers will take you off the list. Because of this reason kids this day are experts in sneaker culture. Not only teens are obsessed with the sneakers but the boxes also. Is a way to so respect to the brand and sneakers. They see them as an authentic part of the heirloom sneakers collection.

All of this started with basketball starts, and the roots of skateboarders. With sneakers teens can print their own name in the back of the sneakers having a personal unique cool sneaker. This all happen in online orders. This day’s sneakers are a way to express yourself. It tells you who you are and what you like.

Purposeful Summary:
WHAT’S UP WITH YOUR SON AND HIS SNEAKERS OBSESSION?

https://www.familycircle.com/blogs/momster/2014/10/07/whats-up-with-your-son-and-his-sneaker-obsession/

Sneakers are fashion that every teen can relate too. Shoe is a world that parents hardly understand. They just must take the time and really know the reason behind all of this. Sneakers are becoming more than just shoes.

Sneakers is a fashion that teens could participate in without being teased. Everyone have their own unique style therefore sneakers are a big thing. When you walk into foot locker that is a shoe store. The first thing that they are going to ask you what your colors are. I could be embarrassed because is like a thing teen supposed to know. Now sneakers you could look at them as if what teens need not want. A perfect example is food. When you go to a restaurant they ask you what platter you’re interested in. You already know what kind of food they have having the opportunity to know all of it. We need food, but when it comes to picking what you like to eat that already becomes what you want. Same thing with sneakers you need shoes to not be bared foot but when it comes to the type of sneakers that’s when it becomes what you want not need.

Sneakers like Nike and Adidas cost from $170 to $250. Teens especially boys, often judge who has the right to wear these expensive shoes. For teens wearing this kind of sneakers and not having your own athletically, they are going to make fun of you in your face or talk behind your back. As you can see having expensive sneakers or not there always going to be safety issues. One way or another

Purposeful Summary:
1,200 PEOPLE ARE KILLED EACH YEAR OVER SNEAKERS

https://qz.com/554784/1200-people-are-killed-each-year-over-sneakers/

Imaging 1,200 people getting killed every year just because of sneakers. Sneakers being a to save us from being barefooted to becoming a problematic issue. Being obsessed with sneakers causing even more problems than we ever thought was going to happen. How can a fabric, a material could kill 1,200 people each year in a metaphorical way? This is what really happening in the world now.

Americans are willing to kill each other for shoes. We could say that sneakers are motivating and increasing deaths overtime. Companies all over the world tried to fix this problem by changing the time of purchase from midnight to morning to reduce the amount of deaths, but they realize that the deaths are not occurred during the launches is after people buy them.

Most of the victims of these crimes are disproportionately young, black man. As you can see sneakers are taking the role of the same level that money is. This days for teens sneakers are as much important as money and life. They like need it to survive. The thing that hurts more is that there is no good answer to fix this problem.

Purposeful Summary:
SNEAKERS FREAKS LIVE TO BUY, SELL, AND TRADE SHOES: THE HOBBY IS AN OBSESSION, AND SOMETIMES A LUCRATIVE ONE, FOR THIS YOUNG COLLECTORS

https://search-proquest com.ezproxy.rowan.edu/docview/1507641414/fulltext/4B567811E2174256PQ/1?accountid=13605

If you look at sneakers in a educated way you could conclude that is a product that can be change in many different ways. They could be bought, selled, or trade. I believe this i one of the reasons why teens are obsessed with sneakers this days.

Hype is a big reason why people are buying shoes from other customers through Facebook, eBay, and other social media. By doing this they be getting a approximately of 18,000 to 20,000 by just reselling the shoes in this social media pages. Making them win more money by customers having debate of who going to get it. So, it leaves to the owner’s choice to put the price up and who is willing to pay more money and that’s how you find a winner. Therefore, is called a hype up because at first, they put it as cheap, but because everyone wants it at the end it could even turn more expensive than if you would’ve bought the shoe at its original price.

This sneaker obsession is more common on males then on females. Is like boys is sneakers and girl’s obsession in make-up. Sneakers in this age has become a symbol status than any other product for urban males. Michael Jordan was the start of sneakers obsession. He was the father of the sneakerhead culture.

The hype of preceding online purchase as decrease on going to stores, but this doesn’t stop kids or teens from lining up early in the morning for sneakers. Especially is they are limited or there only an exact amount made. It could be a first come first serve situation.

Purposeful Summary:
Digital dressing up: modelling female teen identity in the discursive spaces of the fashion blogosphere

Teens have dedicated their life to the internet web. Making blogs that will show their personal life and say all of their thoughts.

White Paper: Nina

Hypothesis: The diagnosis of a short term- terminal disease sets the age clock in children higher than the age clock in other children and adults not affected by a terminal disease.

Article 1: Child euthanasia should be allowed by Luke J. Davies

Davies, L. (2015). Child euthanasia should be allowed

http://go.galegroup.com/ps/i.do?p=OVIC&u=rowan&id=GALE%7CEJ3010134276&v=2.1&it=r&sid=summon

It seems counterintuitive that doctors assist in the euthanization of children but also can decide the terms of which children can be euthanized. In this article the author describes the two opinions of child euthanasia. First, in many cases when a child or individual is diagnosed with a terminal disease that has no cure, parents and or guardians refuse to point to euthanasia as their second option, especially if a child is involved. Secondly, others would rather allow euthanization to be the alternative opposed to allowing someone to suffer from an incurable disease.

The author argues that child euthanasia should be allowed, but only under strict criteria and approval by professionals. There will be a narrower set of criteria for children then there would be for adults, for children won’t be accountable to decide life or death. But, this also holds a barrier over a child’s input to make decisions.

Lastly, the article highlights the emotional pressure that euthanasia endures on not only the patient but on his or her family. A child who is told they are qualified and meet the criteria and can be euthanized might feel obligated to agree. Where as a family may suffer emotional and financial set backs due to euthanasia.

Article 2: Organ donation after euthanasia in children

Bollen, J. A. M., Ten Hoopen, R., van der Hoeven, Mark A H B M, Shaw, D., Brierley, J., Ysebaert, D., . . . van Mook, Walther N K A. (2018). Organ donation after euthanasia in children: Belgian and dutch perspectives. Archives of Disease in Childhood, , archdischild-2018-315560. doi:10.1136/archdischild-2018-315560

https://adc.bmj.com/content/early/2018/08/27/archdischild-2018-315560

It seems counterintuitive that individuals who argue euthanasia shouldn’t be allowed in children nor adults, wont want the organs of the deceased to be donated to others to prevent death in other children or adults. In this article, many authors agree and argue forth that after euthanasia is complete, the organs should be donated to save other lives. The article describes that the steps taken to proceed in euthanasia is caused by a coma injection and muscle relaxant. After about five minutes of allowing the organs to set, they can be recovered in an immediate surgery.

The audience must also take into consideration the laws surrounding the requirements for the procedure in different locations. For example, in Belgium the individual must be mentally competent adults and emancipated minors. Where as in the Netherlands, children that are twelve or older are able to choose if euthanasia is an option for them.

The maleficence of the option is the emotional outcome from the individuals family. But the procedure and the steps to take afterwards will be discussed to ensure the family well if euthanasia is an option. The benefits of this is that those who suffer from other health conditions could be saved if organ donation occurs after the procedure.

Article 3: Euthanasia and Depression

Koch, T. (2008). Euthanasia and depression: No surprise. Bmj, 337(7679), 1127-1127. doi:10.1136/bmj.a2479

https://www.bmj.com/content/337/bmj.a2479

It seems counterintuitive that euthanasia is a dominant use for those who suffer from long term incurable diseases, but that patients can also use euthanasia as a solution to depression and anxiety. It is argued that euthanasia should not be an option for individuals who suffer from depression, but it should also not come as a surprise that people would consider it.

Euthanasia has now become a gateway for individuals who suffer from not only chronic-long term diseases, but also for those who face psychological disorders. For example, the woman who requested the procedure during the suffering of anorexia. Doctors and other health professions do not want euthanasia to turn from the end of suffering, to the end of people.

It is argued that means of therapy, psychological counseling, and group sessions with others should be the first steps taken by someone who suffers from depression. Measures of proceeding to euthanasia if the individual has shown no signs of progress, is up to the patient if further signs of psychological illness begin to occur.

Article 4: The sensitivity argument against child euthanasia

Keeling, G. (2018). The sensitivity argument against child euthanasia. Journal of Medical Ethics, 44(2), 143-144. doi:10.1136/medethics-2017-104221

https://search.proquest.com/docview/2157851869?pq-origsite=summon

It seems counterintuitive that ending the suffering in of a painful, incurable disease in adults is more flexible than ending the suffering of an incurable disease in a child. The author poses that children wouldn’t want to see their parents sad and stressed of their death and are too young to understand the process and aftermath of euthanasia. Where as an adult understands the procedure and has no one to hold standards up to and can choose when he or she cannot handle a terminal disease.

Boven suggests that children are more primitive to opt out of euthanasia more than adults. More so because of their family expectations. Adults have a more flexible approach and doesn’t depend on another adult to make their decisions rather than a child. Boven also discusses that if euthanasia is an option, parents might encourage their children to agree to the procedure without considering their child’s best interest.

In conclusion, distinct and specific measures should be taken to decide when euthanasia is appropriate rather than having the option on the table up for takes. A child should fully understand the results and parents must take into consideration the child’s condition and if the criteria for the procedure matches with the child’s situation. The moral lines of the decision for adults to choose euthanasia are very unique from the criteria of a child who has the option to go through the procedure.

Working Hypothesis 1:

The removal of trashcans with the replacement of recycling bins for plastic, composed from the recycled plastic, would decrease plastics from being broken down into micro plastics in the ocean which would reduce ocean pollution.

Working Hypothesis 2:

Creating edible straws, bottles, and silverware would significantly decrease ocean pollution and make the environment more eco-friendly.

Working Hypothesis 3:

using all the plastic waste on trash island, a large building or buildings could be created to decrease ocean and land pollution

This cite is explaining how men named Sanford Weiss and Andrew Wolf patented the edible straw made of fruit in 2006. Mostly all the straws in America are made of plastic and they’re only being used for a short period of time in mostly small drinks at fast food restaurants. But they also explain how people are too lazy and greedy to invest in the straws. it is a bit more expensive, but worth it based on pollution.

Working Hypothesis 1:

The therapeutic and physiological effects that placebos have on a person will ultimately be more beneficial than prescription drugs in curing minor health conditions such as pain relief and depression.

Working Hypothesis 2: ???

Academic Sources

  • The placebo effect should be thought of as only a positive caring effect. Medical treatments relate to words like care and guidance. It all depends on the patient and what they want to happen or expect to happen to them. But there are other factors that contribute to the overall success of the treatment like the relationship with the medical staff or the beliefs of how strong of an effect the treatment will have on them.
  • Blease CThe principle of parity: the ‘placebo effect’ and physician communication Journal of Medical Ethics 2012;38:199-203. Link: https://bit.ly/2H6rdhw
  • A study was conducted to see if placebos worked without using deception. The results showed more improvements when both the medical researcher and the patient knew what the patient was receiving, which contradicts what a placebo is. They are supposed to be intentionally unknown to see the true effects they have. But, people who took the placebo had greater scores than the ones who had no treatment done to them.

Topics for Smaller Papers

  • psychological vs physiological effects of placebos
  • placebo effect on animals
  • Counterargument: prescription drugs are more effective than placebos

Current State of Research Paper

Right now honestly, I am overwhelmed with the whole project, but I just changed my hypothesis to something I am more interested about in learning. It may take a lot of time and effort before I get a solid foundation on this essay, but I am eager to research and create a well developed argument. 3000 words seems very immense, but this whole project is a process, so I’m going to tackle it in sections.

White paper – Jets1313

  1. Working Hypothesis 1: Celebrities obtain unjust special treatment unequal to the average criminal while incarcerated in state or federal prisons, creating an immoral and unbalanced criminal justice system.

1a. Working Hypothesis 2: Celebrities are given unlawful and special treatment in the court of law as a result of high-profile lawyers utilizing illegitimate tactics, creating and immoral and unbalanced criminal justice system.

2. 5 Academic Sources:

  1. This article suggests that high profile cases are more likely to have media coverage and will be very publicized. In turn, this will affect the Jury’s perception of the case at hand, causing them to lead toward the direction that the media is portraying. This could give the criminal celebrity an upper hand in their sentencing. “Celebrity Adjudication: Comparative Analyses of United States Verdict Rates for Celebrity Defendants” By: Bruce A. Carroll. (Link: https://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/entersport11&div=5&id=&page=&collection=journals)
  2. An article titled “Celebrity Justice” by: John Gibeaut explains how when it comes to the sentencing of a criminal there are is a “two-tiered court system”. One of these tiers being for your average person or criminal, and the other tier being for high profile celebrities. These two tears are obvious because these high profile cases are not getting the sentences that they deserve. (Link: https://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?collection=journals&handle=hein.journals/abaj91&id=44&men_tab=srchresults)
  3. “The Anonymous Accused: Protecting Defendants’ Rights in High-Profile Criminal Cases” By: Laurie Nicole Robinson Explains how hard it is to give high profile criminals their right to receive a fair trial, while also realizing that their jury might be affected by outside sources. Our first amendment right allows the media to portray and influence the world in any way they so please, which will influence the Jurys ultimate decision. (Link: https://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/bclr44&div=30&id=&page=&collection=journals)
  4. High profile criminals usually call on high profile lawyers to represent them. “Publicity in High Profile Criminal Cases” By: H. Patrick Furman expands on this topic while suggesting that these lawyers do not always handle their cases in an honorable or lawful manner. It is also possible that the lawyers seek to gain more media attention for their unethical style of defense, bringing media influence to the case itself. Once again, possible swaying the jury. (Link: https://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?handle=hein.journals/hulr43&div=29&id=&page=&collection=journals)
  5. Professional Athletes that are convicted of crimes are also considered High- Profile criminals, mainly because they attract the same amount of media attention as celebrities. Many of these criminal athletes will be picked apart or singled out for their actions, while others are swept under the rug or hidden behind other/lesser allegations. Many of these athletes are still on professional teams even though there is exceeding evidence against them. “Professional Athletes–Held to a Higher Standard and Above the Law: A Comment on High-Profile Criminal Defendants and the Need for States to Establish High-Profile Courts” By: Laurie Nicole Robinson also explores the idea that there needs to be a place established without a bias jury for some of these criminals, as they are not being equally sentenced or given fair trials because of their media attraction. (Link: https://heinonline.org/HOL/Page?collection=journals&handle=hein.journals/indana73&id=1323&men_tab=srchresults)

3. Topics for Smaller Papers:

  1. The public is influenced by what the media displays, and this will have an effect on the perception of the jurors, even though they are supposed to be impartial.
  2. In spite of serious criminal charges, High-Profile lawyers are able to manipulate the judicial system in order to reduce the charges of their client whether in a lawful manner or not.
  3.

4. Current State of Research Paper: I think that my hypothesis has changed since the beginning, I still believe that celebrities receive unfair treatment in the criminal justice system, however, I now believe that it may have more to do with media influence on the jurors than I had originally thought.
