The scene starts by focusing on a full-body shot from the side view of a man that is sitting at his desk in his home office. In his home office, the man was catching up on some work for his job, there was a stack of paper that was next to his computer on his desk. He is doing some work on his computer, with the angle of the shot, the man is checking some emails from his job. The lighting in the home office is slightly dim, the light is mostly coming from a lamp next to the man at the desk and from the ceiling light. There is no natural light coming into the home office making it clear that this video is taking place at night. He is wearing a button-down shirt and khaki pants, with a medium-length brown hair cut, the average kind of dad haircut. The clothes that he was wearing were from his day at work and was wearing them until he got ready for bed. In the background of the shot, there is the corkboard behind the father and there are different pieces of paper on the wall. The paper on the wall holds a specific amount of value to the man, he feels a need to hang them on the corkboard. There are drawings, two photos and some papers on the board. Throw the door, there is a kids size bike in the hallway, you can only see the seat and back wheel. The frame of the bike is pink and the seat is mostly white with a strip of pink thought in the middle. This indicates that there must be a child or two that are living in the house with the dad.

The man picks his head up from his work that he is doing with a look of confusion and concern on his face. He heard his head a little to the left to hear where the noise must have been coming from. He must have heard a noise that was coming from outside of his home offices. The movie must have been coming from the kid that owned the pink and white bike. After realizing what the noise was, he sighs and turns his attention back to his computer.

After hearing some kind of noise coming from upstairs and turning his attention back to his computer for a bit. He lifts up his are putting his right on top of his laptop to close it. After closing the laptop he turns in his chair to get up from his desk to see where the noise might have come from. The chair seems to be a black swivel chair that the father is sitting in. With his turning his chair the man is now facing the front of the camera. With his facing the camera now, he had his left arm on the armrest to help him stand up in front of the chair. The look on his face is less conduit now, but more of the look that a father gets when their child needs his help. A determination and caring look are on his face to make sure that his child is ok.

As the father is standing up from the desk, he is starting to walk out of the office, but before he even gets a foot away from his desk he turns around. The man turns back around to his desk and leans over to grab his computer from his desk. He unplugged the computer  and grabbed it to take care of where the noise must have come from. After leaving the from of the shot. The camera starts to slowly focus on the corkboard. This causes your eyes to look to what the father must have put on there that holds a specific value to the man.

With the man leaving the view of the camera, we have a full view of the corkboard that was benign the father. As the camera starts to slowly zoom into the corkboard, we can see what the items on the corkboard are. With the items on the board, In the lower-left hand corner is a photo of a man and a woman, this is the man and his wife in the picture. Next To the picture there is a purple and yellow sticky note. There are different forms of lists on the corkboard. There are two in the lower middle of the corkboard. Above the list and sticky notes, there is a hand print on a paper plate that is hanging up, it looks to be a hand the size of a child’s. There are two other pictures on the corkboard one in the middle of it and one in the upper left corner. There is a monster-like drawing on small pieces of pink paper. Above that pink paper there is a larger drawing with some type of creature on it moving towards an object that is on a bed. This drawing looks to be down makeup from a colored pencil or crayon that was done by a child.

Timestamp 0:15:

Over the last 5 seconds, the camera is zooming closer to the large drawing above the pink paper one. The large drawing is of a large monster, that its whole body is black, with blue spikes that go down from his neck to the end of his feet. The monster also has very sharp teeth and a scary look on his face. The monster is drawn towards a bed. Something is protecting what the person drawing called Papa. The papa is drawing what looks like a lion that is scared of the monster. This must represent that when the child has a nightmare that her father will protect her from any of the bad monsters that might either be under her bed or in her closet. In the upper left corner of the shot, you can see the man is moving up the stairs to where the noise must have come from. He has his hand on the railing as he is moving up the stairs.

In the next shot, the camera is zoomed in on a little girl’s face. The little girl is asleep on the left side with her head on her pillow. The little girl has dark hair that is tucked behind her shoulders as she is asleep. The little girls now look more than 7 years old. She is wearing grey pajamas with pink and blue shapes on them. The PJ top seems to belong sleeves on her because the sleeve of the PJ goes down her whole arm. Her head is one pillow that has a white background and different illustrations on it. One of the illustrations looks to have a little bit of a blue background with a shape of a bird that is a darker blue and has a little bit of pink in it. There is a little pick of  a stuffed animal what that the girl is sleeping with. In the shot there is one ear of the stuffed animal that is peaking out, the animal’s head means to be a light color of green.

Timestamp 0:19:

The camera zooms out so we can see the little girl’s whole room. The girls need twin sizes. Hse is holding a stuffed animal under her arms, it looks to be either a beard or a dog. On their sheets, there is a dinosaur over them. Some are blue, green, and reddish-orange colors. There is also a quit at the end of her bead. Behind her bed, there are blue curtains that are covering her windows. They look to be floor-length curtains. The room is fairly dark with only like coming from the hallway. There is a nightstand next to her bed. There is a lamp on it that has a white base and on the over, there is pink trim on the top and bottom of the lampshade. There is also a follower pattern on the lampshade. In the right-hand corner of the shoot, you can see two pictures that are hanging up on the wall. You can see a little of a bitten shelf that seems to be holding some of her toys and important items in it.

Timestamp 0:20:

The camera stays as a wide shot of the room, but it slowly starts to move down towards the floor of the little girl’s room. This is leading the person watching the ad to move their eyes to the bottom of the scene to see what might be on the floor of the scene.

Timestamp 0:22:

At this point, we can see that the father is under the little girl’s bed. He is finishing the work that he was doing downstairs on his computer. The little girl is still sleeping well and her father is doing his work. On the floor with the father, we see that there is a soccer ball that has rolled under the girl’s bed as well.

Timestamp 0:25:

After panning down to where the father is under the bed. Four words that pop up on the screen are “Never stop being a dad”. With the phrase popping up, it ties together what the ad is supposed to be about. Even though the dad had work to do, it still means that he has to take care of his kids at the same time. Just because you are doing something else does not mean you can stop being a dad.

A couple of your classmates have also selected this video to analye, Iced, so I’m becoming familiar with the descriptions. I still haven’t watched the video, deliberately, so I have only your description to help me understand what you’re watching. Since you’re my guide, and since I have no alternative to asking you what WE are watching, I have some questions about your first observations at 0:01.

The ad starts by focusing on a man that is at his desk.

How do you know this is an “ad” and not the beginning of a TV show? We’re watching TV when we see this video; that’s where they appear, so if it comes on the screen, do we know right away it isn’t a commercial for a new car? If so, what is it we’re seeing that first tells us what we’re watching? Also, are we looking at the man from above, below or to the side? Do we see his face, his profile, the back of his head? In closeup or from a distance? Is the camera moving toward him or away? These choices the director might have made all have purpose. We can both learn a lot by paying attention to those choices (but you have to tell me what they are since I can’t see them).

The lighting in the room is slightly dim, there is light mostly coming from a lamp next to the man at the desk and from the ceiling light.

That’s helpful, but it could describe a sentimental family drama or the buildup to a horror movie equally well. Do you get a sense that the man is comfortable in this setting? And about that room, is it an office or a bedroom? How can you tell?

There is no natural light coming into the room making it clear that this ad is taking place in the night.

I like that observation. A man is at “his” desk at night. So he’s either working late at the office, or he’s home and catching up on work, or he’s an aspiring novelist who writes best when the kids are asleep, or he’s repairing a broken lamp socket. You haven’t said what he’s doing at the desk. Do any of these seem more likely given the atmosphere the director is creating?

The man is sitting at this desk on his computer, he is most likely doing late night work for his job in his home offices.

Ah! He’s on his computer. What is it you can SEE that leads you to believe he’s doing employment-related work instead of searching his ancestry online? I’m not saying your conclusion is illogical; I’m only asking what you based it on.

He is wearing a button-down shirt and khaki pants, with a medium-length brown hair cut, the average kind of dad haircut.

Was the wardrobe selected for a reason? What would be the implications of choosing to have him be at the desk in pajamas and a robe? Which one would say: Stayed up late, and which one would say: Woke from sleep and had to write this down before I forgot it? Are the khakis and the button-down shirt further indications of “dadness”?

He is leaning forward reading something off of his computer.

Why? To indicate his close attention? To indicate that he needs reading glasses? To indicate that he is not PRODUCING new work but instead CONSUMING someone else’s work product? I know. That seems like a ridiculous amount of detail to expect from the first seconds of a video, but our brains are really quick to draw conclusions. What does your brain tell you?

In the background, there is the corkboard behind the father and there are different pieces of paper on the wall.

“in the background” where “the father” would have to turn around to see them? or “in the background” of the shot but alongside his desk, where any time he wants to refresh his relationship with those papers he needs only to turn his head, or move his eyes? In other words, how crucial are these posted documents?

There are drawings, two photos and some papers on the board.

Our sympathies are immediately engaged by “drawings,” Iced. They’re the quickest way for a visual artist like our director here to indicate the presence of a person who wants to communicate. They indicate “here is how I see things” and “let me share this with you.” If Dad has posted them at his home work space, he not only cares what the artist has to say, he also wants the artist to see that the drawing is meaningful and valuable.

Throw the door, there is a bike in the hallway, you can only see the seat and back wheel.

I haven’t seen it, but I’ll bet you can tell from that seat and wheel (and the portion of the frame that’s visible) whether it’s an adult bike or a kid’s bike. Maybe even if it’s for a boy or a girl. What does it say that the bike is in the hallway? They have to bring them in the house to keep them from being stolen? They don’t have a yard, a garage, or a porch? This is an apartment in the city? All are possible. How does what you see help you decide which is most likely?

This indicates that there must be a child or two that are living in the house with the dad.

    It might.

I hope this helps you understand the process of combining your Visual descriptions with the Rhetorical analysis that makes this a Visual Rhetoric assignment, Iced.
