My Hypothesis. – halizzle

  1. Abortion.
  2. Deciding factors of abortions should be limited to the mother.
  3. Effects of rape, postpartum depression and being in the foster system.
  4. Women being the only decision maker would lower the amount of children in foster systems.
  5. By allowing women to be the sole decider whether or not to have an abortion would lower rates of postpartum depression and children in the foster care system.
  6. Allowing private abortions and giving ONLY the mother the option would greatly decrease the negative effects of having an unwanted child.

    1. Abortion.
I get nervous when I see this topic, halizzle, because it’s been written about by literally millions of students, is usually presented as a FOR/AGAINST proposal, and, given the ready availability of papers-for-sale, has tempted countless young academics into plagiarism. That doesn’t mean you can’t do credible original research on the topic, but you’ll have to sell me on the idea.

Here’s how one student handled my objections in the fall 2018 semester:

    2. Deciding factors of abortions should be limited to the mother.
So far, this is just a “Right to Choose” position.

    3. Effects of rape, postpartum depression and being in the foster system.
This is a messy collection of causes and effects. Pregnancy is the RESULT of rape. Unwanted pregnancy is the CAUSE of postpartum depression. Unwanted pregnancy is the CAUSE of children being given up to foster care.

    4. Women being the only decision maker would lower the amount of children in foster systems.
This is a re-statement of just one of your list from #3.

    5. By allowing women to be the sole decider whether or not to have an abortion would lower rates of postpartum depression and children in the foster care system.
You’ve dropped rape from your equation, so does that mean you’re BROADENING rather than NARROWING your hypothesis as you proceed? You COULD advance the premise that women should be granted UNLIMITED FREEDOM to abort any pregnancy that results from rape BECAUSE such pregnancies overwhelmingly damage both the child (given to foster care) AND the mother (severe postpartum depression).

    6. Allowing private abortions and giving ONLY the mother the option would greatly decrease the negative effects of having an unwanted child.
Not specific enough to allay my fear that you’ll be “collecting the opinions” of other commentators hazizzle. What research would prove this very broad premise?

Last year’s student researcher make an eloquent plea to end what she considered overt discrimination against poor mothers-to-be who, faced with two unmanageable alternatives, too often chose dangerous unsanctioned abortions and died as a result. She kept it focused.

    Does this help?
