Visual Rhetoric Rewrite

0:01 The ad starts with an Asian man maybe 20-25 years old. He is on his phone about to sit on the couch alone. This indicates that he is still on his phone even when walking, so he is distracted. He seems to spend a lot of time texting. The phone is an iPhone 6 which means the ad is recent, maybe made a few years back. This can be his parents’ house considering there is an old-looking picture of a couple on the wall. Right behind him there is a picture on the wall of some type of building. There are little American flags in a vase full of flowers so it may be Independence Day or some sort of holiday. Even though he’s an Asian man, this indicates he lives in America. By the expression on his face, he looks upset at his phone. Maybe he received news that upset him. He is dressed in sweats probably because he’s chilling at home and doesn’t have anywhere to be.

0:02 He is still on his phone, but the background has changed. He is what looks like a library because there are books on shelves with labels on the binding of each book, yet he is not reading any of them since his phone is his distraction. His expression on his face remains the same. The position of the man’s face and head are in the same position for both the previous scene and this scene. His thumbs are both on the screen of his phone so he may be texting someone. He is probably in school because he is dressed in a more casual outfit than the first scene. He has books on the side of him, but fails to pay attention to them. He may be in a high school or college library, but that is besides the point. The important part in this scene is that it is targeting a younger audience.

0:03 Background change. He is once again alone still on his phone. I am starting to think that something really important is on his phone because the scene has switched to him working out doing sit-ups at the gym. He is wearing a workout outfit with a yellow-colored headband. He may be at a public gym or his school gym. The equipment behind him are colored red and yellow which leads me to think this can be a school gym that is represented with those colors since his headband matches. He still has the same face as all the other seconds.

0:04 Background change. Now he is in what seems like a food court. He is not eating. He is sitting next to someone that looks around the same age as him even though we can’t see the face. This shows the viewer that the man in all the other scenes is the main focus. It may be his friend. There are other people in the scene except they seem unimportant in the background. I guess what the director is trying to say that even in social situations this man doesn’t interact besides being on his phone. Again, he still has the same face expression. It seems that having people in the background adds more of an effect to his isolation, and the significant distraction his phone is causing.

0:05 Background change. He is still positioned at the middle of the screen. There is a cupcake with a candle on it signifying that it is his birthday, but he still on his phone (no surprise here). His face is the same as in all the other scenes. He seems to be at a kitchen table in a house. Now there are other people in the scene. To the left of him, there are two girls. Maybe his friends or one of them can be his girlfriend. One of their faces is shown. Maybe that is important for a later scene in the video. She is caught glancing at his phone. To the right of him, it looks like they can be his parents just because they are right next to him while they sing “Happy Birthday.” He can be taking a picture of the cupcake, but it seems like he is still texting. This just shows that even though he has friends and family looking at him, he remains on his phone. Even at big events in his life like a birthday, it seems that whatever is on his phone is more important.

0:06 Background change. This scene is kind of random and out of place. He is on a carousel, still on his phone and still with the same expression. Now I’m starting to wonder if maybe whatever is on his phone is just the same thing because his face hasn’t changed at all since the beginning. He’s the only person in this scene, but the carousel most likely represents the world and the people moving around him, yet he is still distracted on whatever is on his phone.

0:07 Background change. Now he is sitting on a couch, but a different one from the first second. The house may be different too. The girl that had her face shown in the birthday scene is next to him with her arm on his shoulder. You can see her glancing at his phone. This is probably his girlfriend considering she is wondering what is on his phone. I now think he may be a little younger than 20 since she looks pretty young. It looks like she is saying something, but he is just ignoring her while he still looks at his phone. The director probably chose to make the girl speak to show that he doesn’t even notice or acknowledge that she is there. So whatever is on his phone must be more important than what she is saying. There are plants, a box that says “24 Bars” and balls or what look like ornaments either on top or in it. Based on my personal experience, this can be an Asian household since stereotypically, Asians have a lot of plants in their house. So this may still be his house.

0:08 Background change. It is just him in the scene. The viewpoint is from the inside of a fridge. The man looks like he is closing it. But you can see him still on his phone.

0:09 Background change. The scene is kind of dark. It looks like he is in bed. I think the director did this on purpose to show that he is still on his phone because you can see the light reflecting off his face. So far, the point of view looking at the man is the same in each second. Although he is laying on his side, his body is still in the same position and alignment as the other scenes. The light from the phone sort of makes a spotlight on the boy because everywhere around him is dark.

0:10 Background change. He is on an elevator going up, and is now wearing a jacket. So maybe this indicates the season change. He is still on his phone after all this time has passed. His thumbs are still on the screen so he is still texting someone. The brand of his hat is blurred out to maybe focus the viewer’s attention to only the boy to eliminate minor details like the brand. He is still positioned in the middle of the screen.

0:11 Background change and still in the middle of the screen in the same position as the previous scenes. He is at a party it looks like because of the lights and people around him. He is in fact still on his phone. This shows that even in the most social place to talk to people, he still has his face in his phone. There is a guy to the right of him and it looks like he is having a good time with a smile on his face.

0:12 Background change and still positioned in the middle. He is back at the same gym he was earlier. He is still on his phone, but now he is not the one doing the workout. He’s not in the same outfit as the other gym scene because he doesn’t have the yellow headband. Maybe he is too distracted on his phone to even put on the headband. It seems that he is supposed to be the spotter for the person lifting weights on the bench in from of him. The face of the person in the front of him is not shown, again to focus the attention on the boy. He isn’t paying attention at all because his attention is somewhere else, his phone.

0:13 Background change and still in the middle of the screen. He is back in the same mall he was at earlier. This looks like the same exact scene because he is wearing the same exact outfit and the people in the background are the same. Also, his friend next to him is wearing the same thing. He is still on his phone.

0:14-0:15 It is a fast compilation of all the previous seconds of the boy on his phone and in the different settings. The purpose of this little part of the video was probably to go through all the different backgrounds, yet the boy remains the same. He is still in the middle of the screen, while looking down at his phone, texting.

0:16 He’s in his car now, but it looks like he’s about to do something with his phone. He has it in one hand. It looks like it was a transfer from one hand to the other. Now that he’s about to drive, I guess he realizes that this is the time for him to get off his phone. The camera angle has changed positions now. It is a side view of the boy. His face isn’t shown just the neck down. He is in front of a house. It can be his house or someone else’s. But he is definitely in a neighborhood because there’s a house right next to the other one, and what appears to be the house number. It may be the holiday season because there is a wreath hanging on the door, but that may just be a decoration.

0:17-0:18 This scene is of a closeup of his phone. The phone is on a seat, which means it’s not in his hands. He may have thrown it there to show that he doesn’t text and drive. It shows a conversation in his text messages. The whole text conversation is blurred out except for two messages. The other person sending a message to him goes “Alright come over.” He ends the conversation with “Ok. Driving now so I’ll ttyl.” The phone is not turned off purposefully so that viewers can read the message that the video is trying to convey and the literal messages on the phone. When not looking at the video in real time on TV, you can read the messages of the conversation by pausing the video. The other person is talking about a video, which maybe the one we’re watching now considering they included a traffic light emoji with their text, which means it has something to do with driving. Instead of the man saying “I’ll ttyl”, he also includes “driving now” to shift the focus of the meaning of this video. The message is most likely not to text and drive.

0:19-0:20 The car is kind of blurry meaning that the it is in motion. It is probably his car because the last scene was him in the car. The words “NOT HERE” appears in white.

0:21 The words “Never here” appear in a text message format right underneath the “NOT HERE.” I guess this is to remind to not to TEXT and drive since the message is in a bubble like an iPhone message. The background is of the boy’s car driving away out of a neighborhood.

0:22-0:23 Then the message is finally revealed “Don’t text and drive” with the word text in blue to show the importance of that word. Again, the same background as the last scene except he has just moved farther along the road.

0:24 The video fades to a black screen to indicate the ending of the video.

Afterword The fact that the boy was at the center of every screen was a good idea. It put the focus all on him to show he was the main character of this video. It also helped that he was doing the same exact thing with the same exact expressions, which was texting on his phone with a neutral face. I feel like the audio wouldn’t have been needed because the message of the video was pretty clear without it. After re-watching the ad with volume, I realized it was mostly just clicking of the keyboard on the phone, which I already heard in my head without the audio the first time.

Needs a Real Title

The United States is the developed, richest, and sophisticated nation in the world and is what the rest of the world views as a role model. Even though mass incarceration is happening in the United States without a reasonable doubt. The United States still leads the world in the most incarcerated people the United States has a total of 2.121 million people in prison and a population of 325.7 million people. With the nation thriving economically and being the face of freedom it is deceptive to outside nations to what is actually occuring within the United States. Prisons are disproportionately black and hispanic in the United States most of the prison population are apart of minority groups. Although the root of the argument could simply be diffused by saying, “criminals commit the crime; therefore, they were incarcerated” but it is not that simple. It is because of the lack of money and knowledge that low-income areas receive without proper education and money the cycle of poverty and mass incarceration will continue.

Those who believe that mass incarceration is caused of compromise couldn’t be more correct. Throughout  early history in America when both ends of the aisle did not agree the two sides would meet in the middle and come up with some sort of compromise. Now there is this political debate about which party is correct about very essential problems that are occuring in the United States. To others criminals are the bottom of the bucket and don’t deserve rights. This ideology is inherently evil and go against the fundamentals that they wish to preserve. Though most of the country should agree that people convinced of violent crimes need to be punish to full extent of the law but saying nonviolent drug crimes should receive the same punish is preposterous. Prison’s are something that should be taken seriously and with the government expanding the federal prison system needs reform. Though ignoring the problem of prison reform seemly protects our country from people that want to do harm in the future it doesn’t protect the rights that prisoners are entitled to. According to the 8th amendment cruel and unusual punishment are not allowed in prisons and the 8th amendment is among the 10 amendments that make up the bill of right in the United States. The bill of rights are the founding concepts that were founded back with the constitution in 1787.

The fight to conserve the traditional style of a small federal government roots from a greater argument to avoid tyranny, corruption, and economic downfall. Conserving tradition is not a bad thing and it should be encouraged nationwide and globally. The point is that the government is an entirely different entity from the belief of their country the United States was founded of this new ideology of freedom and the “pursuit of happiness”. The founding fathers knew any government that based their practice on traditions, cultural value, and/or monarchy would inevitably fail. Conserving tradition can be done individually and should not be implemented into any of our laws because it is systemically unfair.

The government has a job to protect its citizens and enforce the law. The government has expanded so much that it is becoming an increasing concern for many people. This concern is coming from a just point of view that should be apart of conversation when it comes to controversial law, precedent, or election if that matters. Prison reform is not as important as health care, gun control, or abortion because criminals are not as important as the americans that are able to keep their freedom. Like conditions and unhealthy life that prisoners have to endure are not already bad. The United States is beacon of freedom yet the United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. Meaning any person is more likely to be arrested in United States than any other country in the world. Which is ironic because the beacon of freedom is throwing the most people into prison hence removing their freedom. The government cannot run away from this problem much longer. The more time that goes on, people become more informed and therefore this will become an even larger problem than it already is.

Expanding on the idea that as time goes on this problem would only get worse. The longer the United States waits on prison reform it makes the country that is supposed to be the beacon of freedom a weak position on incarceration on the world stage. The country that has been so influential over the last 50 years should have the equipment, brainstorm, and the budget to execute the obvious flaws in their justice system. Which raises the questions of  “Why don’t they fix the justice system?” but it is not to easy to get 535 people to agree on prison reform and not to mention the review to see if the law is constitutional. The process is tedious without a doubt but legislators in past have made compromises with a bipartisan agreement and made laws and other programs to help the people of the United States. All in all lawmakers today do not make the same effort as the lawmakers of the past. People are more driven by ideology rather than compromise. In conclusion, minorities are still the most affected by the United States justice system. Ignoring the problem of racial injustice is flat out wrong and the government should be ashamed that they’re silencing people that minor nonviolent offenses. According to Prison Reform “47% of the prison population is nonviolent crimes and about half of those are considered “petty crimes” such as small traces of heroine in clothing, marijuana offenses, and even tax evasion. This problem is large and when the government starts paying attention to prison reform the faster the people can heal as a country. Prisoners are people too and they deserve their right to be not be treated cruelly and/or unusually.

Visual Rewrite–Daphne Blake

The Signs | Friendship & Mental Health | Ad Council

0:00

The initial image on the screen is some sort of small animal, appearing to be a possum on a branch. It seems to be just for decoration. The owners might like to hunt or just like possums. The animal is in a house next to a lamp and you can see half of picture frame with a little boy holding up a mug. Maybe the son of a family? There’s a frame above the animal and a chimney that has assorted vases and statues. So far we have a moderately decorated house with a possible child and family.

0:01

The next shot shows a headline that says, “awkward silence presents” so that may just be the name of the people who produced it or it may contribute to the video and how it’s so awkward. Then a guy appears with his right leg crossed over his left and his hands are folded. He’s wearing buissiness casual clothing with white sneakers and black ankle socks. I think he’s trying to look sophisticated. To me he looks like the kid in the picture all grown up, but that’s just a guess. The guy looks to be on another side of the house because now we see a fish tank, lots of books, a figurine duck, some paintings of nature, and some more animal figurines. For me the animal figurines and nature paintings adds to the hunting idea. There is also a yellow letter “H” on the screen so I’m assuming the guy is about to say something that starts with an h.

0:02

The scene is the same except the yellow words now say, “How to know if you should”. The guy’s mouth is moving as the words appear so I’m assuming he’s saying it.

0:03

The scene is the same except the yellow words now read out,”How to know if you should reach out to a friend.” Maybe a video on friends going hunting together and knowing when to call the other for help.

0:04

Now the scene cuts to a close up of the guy and his facial expression has changed from calm and collected to the face your mother gives you when you had too much candy before dinner. The look is of warning and he looks like he’s about to give advice. His facial expression changed maybe because he is about to say something important, hence the close up of his face.

0:05

The guy continues to talk in the close up with the cautious expression until another extreme close up of a beautiful African American woman appears. The scene is no longer in the house and the background is all white. Maybe a bed she’s laying on? She does seem to be laying down, but all you can see is her face and up to the top her shoulders. Her hair is down and curly, maybe she’s taking a photoshoot? You can’t tell if she’s wearing clothes or not from the scene, and she’s staring at the camera as if she’s about to tell a story. Maybe this is the friend the guy from the first scene is trying to contact or the reason he needs to contact a friend. The close up could mean the director wanted something to be hidden and revealed later. This is the second close up shot so far in 5 seconds.

0:06

In this short second, two more people appear very fast back to back. The first is an African American man who appears to be sweating and you can’t tell if he has on clothes either. It’s another close up so I can infer these close ups are meaningful to the video. The guy’s expression looks of concern and his background is blurred but looks red, white, and tan. Maybe a basketball court? The second person who appears is a white woman who looks to be sitting down on a comfy chair. Again, the background is blurred and the shot is a close up, similar to the last three. Both people are on the screen for a split second and i think these close ups are going to be continued. I’m having trouble trying to connect the close ups to the original scene.

0:07

The second starts with another close up of a girl who looks like a teenager. The background also is blurred like the other closeups, but I can make-out balloons. I can see a gold “P”, and a gold “R” together, does it spell out Prom? The girl has straightened hair and lip gloss on which also may contribute to the prom theme. Her expression seems very nonchalant. There are two more closeups in this second. One is of a white boy laying in a bed\, similar to the second close up of the video. His lips looks chapped and he also has a nonchalant look on his face. Maybe the morning after a one night stand?

0:08

The next second shows another closeup. The next close up is of another white man who looks to be older and the background is the same as the African american man, with the red, white, and tan colors blurred. He also appears to be sweating. But I can make out flowers in the background, so I no longer think it’s a basketball court.

0:09

The next closeup in this second correlates with the teenage girl from an earlier second. I can make out the top of a suit and the balloons from the background are of a gold “M”, and a gold question mark. This adds to the prom spelling question I had. The next closeup is of another girl who has another similar background to one of the people in an earlier second.

0:10

The same African american woman from the second close-up of the video is seen again, and the white man from the scene with the flowers is also seen again in this scene.

0:11-0:13

More closeups from the beginning of the video are seen in these seconds.

0:14-0:16

The same guy from the beginning of the commercial who was sitting with his legs crossed appears again, but this time it isn’t a close-up. He stays like this for a few seconds.

0:16-0:21

These seconds still show the guy talking but now it’s a close-up of him again. He seems to be wondering about something the way his head shifts to one side. He continues to talk like this for quite some time.

0:21-0:27

The scene shifts to the fish tank with the words “Find out how you can help a friend with their mental health at seizetheawkward.org” written in small yellow font. The words “Seize the awkward” stays on the screen for the rest of the video.

My overall experience from the video was at first one of confusion as I attempted to draw the lines together from an old, outdated house and hunting and helping friends. The backgrounds of all the different closeups now seem to me like they have a deeper meaning. To me they symbolize how many people, experiencing different things, can come together to support one powerful cause. Each background symbolized how each person’s lives were different and they all were experiencing their own hardships in their own ways. The man at the beginning in the outdated house somehow connected them all together. But I think the powerful message the director wanted to achieve with the various close-ups is the idea that no matter the place and time, you may need help and the ad portrayed that effectively.

If primary caretakers have a negative attitude towards their child, they are going to end up being hostile to others. This children not only will be aggressive to others but because this children were raised by abusive parents they will end up hurting themselves. This negative behavior leads to not learning the appropriate techniques for handling life disappointments. If you are not raised with respect and love, you will act inappropriate. Dr. Geoffrey Dahmer reported “the effect of poor parenting” calling it “The Bully Papers”. Is a chance that everyone gets to have the child they deserve.

0:00-0:01- The video kicks off with the word “Saturday” in white font and the time 2:51PM in orange font, both on a black background. No music is playing, it’s just a quiet scene.

0:02-0:04- An African-American man, who looks to be in his late 20’s or early 30’s, is laying on the ground in his home with what seems to be his infant daughter, who is 1 or 2 years of age. She’s wearing a blue shirt and a pink hair piece with a flower on it. The man has hazel eyes, a thin mustache with a little goatee, with a ring in his left ring finger and a backpack on. He also is wearing a white sweatshirt and has short hair.

0:05-0:09- The man then begins to crawl on the floor along with the child. The girl continues to crawl with him. This time stamp is important because it shows the two bonding.

0:10-0:16- He and the child continue to crawl. The person who chose to post this photo from the man and child, who more likely than not is his daughter, picked this video because it shows the man being an example of being a good father.

0:17-0:24- A white text appears that says, “It only takes a moment to make a moment.” With the text still on the screen, he looks at the infant and she smiles back at him.

0:25-031- The screen goes black but you can still here the man beatboxing. White text appears on the screen that reads, “Take time to be a dad today.” After that disappears, the hashtag, “#makeamovement” appears. The video was about being a father and being there for your children.

Visual Rewrite-Jets1313

0:00-0:01

Camera Slowly zooming in on a convenience store called Jiffy during the night. There is no one outside or in the frame at all making me think that maybe this convenience store is not very popular or it is extremely late at night. There is a half-lit sign off to the right of a large morbid-looking clown that informs the viewer that the convenience store is open 24/7.

0:01-0:02

A young White woman is standing at the counter of the convenience store wearing a green jacket. In the background are aisles of food and drinks, she also seems to be the only one in the store at this time other than the cashier. The lady asks the cashier for a “Pack of cigarettes?” and seems to aviod eye contact with her which leads me to the idea that maybe she is embarrassed by what she is asking for.

0:03-0:05

The camera angles toward the cashier who is an older African American woman and tells her young customer “you need a little more honey” in reference to the amount of money the customer placed on the counter. The camera then directs towards the money on the counter and that is the main focus.

0:06-0:08

The camera is once again focussed on the young customer who has a look of worry on her face. She seems to look at the money and then look at the cashier. Maybe this woman doesnt have enough money to buy the cigarettes? or maybe shes surprised by the cost of them? It is unclear in this part of the commercial.

0:08-0:10

The focus goes back and forth between the two women neither of them saying a word. The cashier seems to have a carless, blank face while looking at her customer. While the customer just looks concerned.

0:10-0:14

The camera is pointed at the young customers face as she begins to rip at the skin on her cheek as if she is trying to tear it off. The camera then turns and is facing the back of the customers head and cashier is in the background, unfocussed, watching her customer.

0:14-0:15

The cashier is again the prime focus and seems to look disgusts by her customers actions as she beings ripping at her skin. She seems to swallow hardly as if she is scared or worried.

0:15-0:16

the focus shifts again to the customer who is beginning to succeed at pulling the skin from her face. She is opening her mouth while she is doing it as if it is painful, however she does not stop trying to get the skin off of her face.

0:16-0:18

The cashiers eyes widen as she watches what is going on right before her eyes. She then looks away from her young customer as if she cannot watch anymore and looks down.

0:18-0:19

The customer and cashier are both in frame now and we are able to see that the customers face has been tarnished and she is holding a piece of it in her hand. She is looking down at her hands with a sad look on her face.
