It seems counterintuitive that the city of Vancouver is providing the city’s worst heroin addicts with free heroin, even though the addicts themselves know that this will not help them to get off the drug.

The intention of providing the heroin for the addicts is at this point viewed as keeping the addicts from becoming violent, instead of trying to get them off of the heroin. It seems as if they have lost the original purpose of the program.

It comes off as being extremely odd that the city would give the addicts more heroin, instead of finding them a new treatment plan that doesn’t involve the drug that they are trying to break away from.

Even the addicts on the program realize that this is not working to help them get off the drug, and it seems that they are using the program as a way to get free heroin. It is also extremely concerning that the executive director of a addiction recovery society, Jim O’Rourke describes this program as a way of “killing addicts with kindness”.

It seems counterintuitive that people in Pakistan would carry out an attack, murdering five people who were simply trying to help to protect the people of Pakistan from the polio endemic present in their country.

As Pakistan is one of three nations that still have a serious issue with polio, there are some groups of people in Pakistan, and in the other two nations, who are against the vaccinations in fear of negative effects. The opposition of these groups makes it seemingly impossible to ever eradicate polio. It seems very contradictory to the point of public safety and health, that even with the increase in polio cases in Pakistan in 2012, many people still decided not to get vaccinated and that people would carry out these attacks.

With these killings it will cause people to not want to help with the prevention efforts, in fear that they will be harmed in some way. Less people helping would make the prevention much more difficult and more than likely much less effective.

It seems counterintuitive that someone would complain about there being a Pizza Hut and a KFC near the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx. Although, it is surprising to many how close businesses and other buildings are to these ancient monuments.

Even though they may seem like an eyesore, these restaurants would more than likely help the economy. The tourists traveling through the area would like to get something to eat, and having a type of food they are familiar with could make them feel more comfortable in a new place. Also, the restaurants are not the only buildings across from the pyramids and sphinx, so if there is an issue, it should not only be with the restaurants, but with the surrounding buildings as well.

It is much better to look at these restaurants as an economic advancement for the hungry people after walking all day rather than as an eyesore.

Practice Opening Rewrite- cardinal

The public’s resistance to vaccination efforts will stop polio from being eradicated. In Nigeria, vaccination efforts were derailed by mere rumors. Anti-polio vaccination groups spread false information about vaccines containing AIDS or harmful drugs, creating defiance toward vaccination. Resistance is furthered by poor Nigerian communities who are frustrated that polio workers will only help with one of their many problems. The opposition even took a violent turn when anti-vaccination terrorists attacked polio workers, killing ten. The failure to vaccinate all children in Nigeria that resulted from this resistance led to an outbreak across the Horn of Africa. If people resist in one place, they will resist elsewhere. Thus, the Horn of Africa’s fate will befall the rest of the world, and polio will never be eradicated.

A Practice Opening – SmilingDogTheProfWants

No entity can eradicate Polio from the world. The world is a place of much distrust regardless of religion, politics, or favorite football team. Humans can be naturally greedy, and as such, we can be deceiving, which leads to an endless loop of distrust among a world that was slowly colonized & advanced both it’s technology and hatred for one another. Polio in Nigeria is a perfect example, distrust is built on rumors and fear that may even turn out to be true; it cannot be said that if people are accepting of the vaccine that their “rivals” would not begin to taint the supply.

The new development of the polio vaccine is causing chaos despite health care workers effort to protect the citizens of this world. Rumors have been spreading about the polio vaccine by people who are living in fear of what this vaccine could really do to humans. These false rumors have caused violence and terrorism in different countries as well. Many people believe that the vaccine is being used to decimate certain populations. The polio virus will be impossible to completely eradicate if people around the world keep fearing that the vaccine will eventually harm them more than actually help them.

Due to opposition of vaccines in places like Nigeria, it will be nearly impossible to eradicate Polio. The country has had leadership who does not seem to have the citizens best interest in mind at times, and that makes them weary of taking a vaccine administered by them. In addition to this, fear of Western interference in the vaccine also contributes to the lack of people taking the vaccine. This makes it close to impossible to rid the world of the disease because for that to happen, everyone would need to get the vaccine.

The eradication of polio seems near impossible after countless attempts to defeat it. The first known outbreaks of polio rooted from Europe in the 1800s. This disease has been around long enough, disabling, and also taking several lives. Nigeria is a well-known hotspot for the virus and cannot seem to find a solution due to the country’s suspicions and concerns with the government and the vaccine provided. There is a vaccine for the disease but there needs to be trust within the system. The vaccine raises flags with some people because of what it is said to contain. If Nigeria wants to control, and hopefully, eliminate the poliovirus, there needs to be a stand and awareness raised in order to build a trusting relationship with the government and the people.

Polio can be eradicated. The World Health Organization identifies three types of wild poliovirus; none can survive outside the human body. Research shows that if the poliovirus cannot find an unvaccinated person to infect, it will die out. The virus doesn’t even have an outbreak because we’re so heavily protected against it. Also, as devastating disease polio is, it’s limited because it only affects humans. According to Polioeradication.org, No poliovirus has been found to exist and spread among animals; therefore, it can’t spread as vastly as other diseases that affect humans and other animals. Lastly, we have a vaccine.

Practice Opening – gooferious

The people of Nigeria are too skeptical to trust their unreliable and deceitful government when it comes to a Polio vaccine. Violence and terrorism is nothing but common in the corrupt country of Nigeria. Rumors go around that the Polio vaccine being offered to children is contaminated with substances that could potentially lead to other diseases, such as AIDS or infertility drugs. Who could blame the community for distrusting the government when murders occur to clinic workers and schoolchildren with no one to take responsibility. Nigeria may simply be too wrapped up in ruthlessness to worry about Polio at this point in time.
