 Breeding for looks, not Health.

As a certain standard for breeds become more selective, it’s evident that some breeders may abuse their powers to make the perfect dog. In all seriousness, these dogs are far from perfect and will suffer from many conditions that could’ve been prevented. This is due to the new norm, petface. These unprecedented standards have recently been set by the American Kennel Club. Petface is the youthful puppy features that breeders intentionally breed for. These traits include big bulging eyes, smushed faces, and larger than average heads. The breeds that are commonly bred for this are Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, Pugs, and the Boston Terrier.  Unfortunately, due to petface, these breeds tend to have odd shaped ears, wide and flat skulls, wrinkles over the nose, many other wrinkles on the face, resulting in the dogs inability to exercise, withstand heat, stress, and the dogs ability to breathe to decrease.

A tactic breeders commonly use to get the perfect dog is inbreeding direct relatives, such as a father and a daughter, or mother and son. This then results in the exact traits they want, but with many problems. For example, the bulldog is commonly inbreed, and tends to suffer from a certain squat with shortened legs, and large heads with a flat muzzle. Bulldogs typically undergo artificial insemination, which could just lead to the breed’s demise. Another poorly bred dog is the pug, who also has to undergo artificial insemination. Pugs also suffer from exposed eyes, which are very vulnerable to sustain injuries. An investigation concluded that the genetic variation in these breeds showed little to no diversity on the mothers and fathers side.

Another problem with these breeds is that the mothers cannot give natural birth. Due to the size of the pups heads, mothers tend to give birth by C- sections. The Boston Terrier, also known as the American Gentleman, is most known for this, since they are bred purposely for a deformed structure. Out of 675 Boston liters, 86% were a C- section, sadly 9% will die at birth, and 14% will be born with birth defects. Another survey found out that out of 109 Boston pups, only 9 died of old age. These statistics are horrible for such a popular breed.

One of the most troubled breed is the French Bulldog. This breed is perfect for city life, since they barely require any exercise due to their breathing problems. This breed happens to be one of the most common breeds, yet one of the most problematic breeds. Frenchies have such trouble breathing, and most airlines actually have them banned from even flying in cargo. This relatively new breed has one of the lowest life expectancy, where their median age was 1.3 years, where most dogs are typically 4.5 years. Out of 300 vet clinics, and 2228 Frenchies, 72% have disorders. While some disorders are typical diarrhea and ear infections, others are mostly wrinkle infections, corneal ulcers, and upper respiratory disorders.

To conclude, the impact of this poor breeding results in high populations of dogs in veterinary clinics, more expensive vet bills, and breeders breeding with no concerns for the animals health. Overheating, exercise intolerance, and sleep apnoea are the least of concerns for the Pug, Bulldog, French Bulldog, and Boston. Eye problems, skin problems (rashes between the skin rolls, mostly yeast and bacterial infections ), orthopedic problems, heart diseases, inherited deafness, and upper respiratory conditions are these dogs most prone conditions. In a study, it was found that outbreeding, introducing dogs from outside breeders registers, by breeding back to normal head shape and less excessive skin rolls would help their disease problems. Breeders tend to reject introducing genes outside of their breed though, since they fear their breed will then “be contaminated”, and the breed would lose its character, be introduced to new diseases, and change in temperament. Breeding practices are negatively impacted by the ignorance of these genetic issues, since people see a cute dog and are instantly sold. Breeding these dogs seems to be a double sided sword; the desirable traits that customers want are met, but at a cost of many inherited genetic diseases.

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

The work I chose to represent core value 1 is my rebuttal argument/ rewrite. I feel this rebuttal paper represents this value since this essay showed how diverse I could be by exploring and discovering points and claims that could falsify my research paper on a topic I’m very passionate about. I used articles that pained me to read, and quite frankly were hard hard to understand, and used it to make a coherent paper of slander against work I’m very happy with. This definitely helped me develop as a writer since it is such a challenging essay to form. Also, the rewrite itself helped me to make this paper better all around. From this paper, it will help me in future papers since I know how to look at my claims from another point of view, therefore having to make me work harder to get my statements across to convince my reader.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

For core value 2, I picked my Stone money essay to represent this value. Before writing this essay, I listened to a podcast and critically read articles. This shows how I used ideas and claims that I have never even thought about from communities that believe money is fake to form my essay Cash, or Crap? which is about how the creation of money started, and how it can appear to be quite fake in the grand scheme of things. By using multiple sources, I was able to create meaning to my paper, and hopefully was able to convince readers I not only understood my topic, but believed in it as well. This essay was fun to write, since it was such a complicated and mind boggling topic to first read and listen to, then be able to write about. From this paper, it bettered my use of sources since I was able to write a whole paper on a whole topic I just learned about.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

The essay I picked to represent core value 3 is my visual rhetoric/ rewrite piece. During this piece, I chose a 30 second video and dissected and analyzed almost every second of the video. By doing this, you can see all the small intentional things the producer adds to get the point across that you usually wouldn’t even think twice about. This represents core value 3 since I was able to rhetorically analyze a visual argument in the form of a short 30 second video posted by Ad council. By doing this, you start to notice small things in movies in videos that are not so obvious, yet add so much to the movie or video as a whole. Also, when revising my piece, I feel I was able to summarize better and improve my analysis of the producers intentions of the small things that mean so much to the video.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

To demonstrate my completion of core value 4, I chose my research paper called Breeding for Looks, Not Health. I find this paper to represent this core value since this is definitely my best academic paper. In this paper, I emphasize the importance of proper breeding, and show the side effects of improper breeding and how terribly it can affect dogs and owners. I found this essay to be one of my favorite essays ever since it was an easy topic for me since I am so passionate about this topic and animals in general. This paper goes above and beyond with evidence and statistics that I have researched to therefore support my thesis and ideas. I also find this topic to not be talked about as much as it should, so I hope this essay can raise awareness by the facts I have stated in my paper.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

I chose my White paper as a good representation of core value 5 since used sources to make purposeful summaries. During this assignment, I used 5 sources for my research paper and cited them appropriately. From this, I feel I was able to use ethical claims from scholarly sources to drive my point home in Breeding for Looks, Not Health. I feel my research paper was a complex topic and not talked about nearly as much as it should be. My white paper really helped me significantly when starting my paper since I already had 5 summaries of my sources. Without having my white paper done, it definitely would have been harder to jump into this complex topic without previous knowledge. I do feel accomplished with this core value since I do feel I did meet the requirements of showing I can summarize complex topics and cite them correctly.

Appreciation: The New Appropriation

Musicians and producers find enjoyment in arguing about cultural appropriation. They accuse Korean pop artists of stealing hip hop style from Black artists and “claiming it” as their own without any appreciation for the lyrics, the apparel, and the dance moves they mindlessly copy. Nevertheless, these stolen elements in hip hop must be an offering as a gift. Black artists write songs for the world to educate us about their experiences through rhythms, words, and gestures. When Korean artists reflect those elements, they show us that they have been paying attention to the significance of music’s cultural relevance.

Western music artists, especially Black artists, have become familiar with the concept and have actively stopped participating in writing music for Korean pop artists. Korean pop artists have suggested that Black music and their appropriated culture are a misunderstood concept. Some Korean artists have indicated that it is the producers that promote Black artists’ music and that the music career promotes the use of Black music as a basis  of economic opportunity. In addition, Korean pop artists have also indicated that they are not appropriating someone else’s music culture because they have used different genres, infuse their own artistic creativity and illustrate their appreciation for the culture they emulate.

Korean artists are producing pop music, historically derived from western pop artists attracting an international fan base. Their music utilizes music elements obtained from multiple music genres. In particular, the primary genre used is pop music. Most of South Korea’s music artists have labeled their music under the Korean pop genre. One of the reasons Korean pop artists have been attracted to hip hop and other Western music genres is that Western pop music provides a greater chance of being recognized by the public and increases financial gain. Knowing that the audience of Korean pop music has expressed interest in Western music, Korean pop artists use upbeat, rhythmic, soft, and catchy soundbites to gain appeal from many listeners. However, these artists are incorporating Western music qualities with elements from Black hip hop culture. Korean artists imitate the style and dark themes often portrayed in Black Western videos and music themes. Korean music has capitalized on its opportunities economically despite the ever-growing concerns of cultural appropriation, whether the novelty of Western music or the contrasting rhythmic and distinct style.

On the other hand, some staunch supporters claim that Korean artists continue to deliberately borrow with no attribution and respect for cultural norms. According to the author of the article, “Three Cheers for Cultural Appropriation,” Bari Weiss states that “few of us doubt that stealing is wrong, especially from the poor. The accusation of cultural appropriation is overwhelmingly being used as an objection to syncretism. The mixing of culture and thoughts and ethnicities often ends in creating new subsets of thoughts and culture. Thus, creating a melting pot.” Korean artists use a different music genre as a reliability for their popularity. They still exploit black culture in their music videos and promotions as an aesthetic for their pop songs. Two elements in hip hop that Korean pop artists commonly benefit significantly from are dressing and acting like gangsters.

In contrast, actual Black hip hop artists struggle to have their artistry and their work be recognized in the music industry. Black artists’ themes benefit other countries and inspire other racially different artists, yet black artists do not receive credit and feel exploited. Bari Weiss also states that “the impulse is one of homage and not derision, borrowing should be encouraged. Culture should be shared, not hoarded.” Korean artists are continuing to steal from Black hip hop artists even without producing hip hop music. Hip hop artists’ culture significantly influences numerous other artists, sharing new and unique ideas. However, attribution is not responsibly attributed and cultural values are not respected.

Korean artists are trying to become a commercial success since the music industry is still a business. When it comes to the topic of business, the top priority is financial gain in order to remain successful. Any industry would take advantage of any possible resource that could be useful to make a profit. The Korean music industry is no different from how they would try to adapt to widespread economic gains independent of cultural appropriation ramifications. According to the author of the article, “What is (the wrong of) cultural appropriation,” Patti Lenard states that “cultural appropriation can be defined as the taking of a valuable, yet reusable or non-exhaustible aspect, of another individual’s culture for one’s use, where the taker knows what they are doing, and where the context of this taking is contested.”

The continuous barrage of arguments on both sides of the spectrum of cultural appropriation and its impact on fashion, media, and music will continue to impact the value of attribution significantly. Political correctness outweighs the popularity and revenue that is afforded by Western pop and hip hop influences. Patti Lenard also states that “cultural appropriation appears to be additionally defined by the existence of underlying power structures which support or permit those with more power to take from those with less.” One example that Patti Lenard used was Kylie Jenner wearing cornrows in an Instagram post. Kylie Jenner may not be wearing a predominantly Black hairstyle with the intent to exploit the culture; however, she is still receiving high praise and profits off of it. No matter what kind of intentions artists would have, their main objective is to make money at no cost, whether they are culturally appropriating or not.

Society tends to mistake what it means to appropriate culture, which brings debates about whether a celebrity is exploiting that culture or not. There is nothing wrong with opposing whether Korean artists are unethical in promoting and producing their music. However, the lack of consideration for an oppressed culture should not be justified by a business standpoint or whether the hip hop genre in songs. An artist should be successful without exploiting a different culture and showing respect towards it from behind the scenes. Nonetheless, artists continue to seek increasing popularity and wealth regardless of political culture and social appropriateness.

Does Music Really Affect Us?

Sounds… No. Music… Yes! Better yet, we can still feel their music. Music has this weird magical ability to send a message to our brain and  make us react, whether we know the words or not. Is music some type of witchcraft? Should we be worried about the control music has over the human body?

Tunes. Jam. Bop. Banger. All similes for the collection of sounds we call music. Hearing is the ability to perceive sound. In the world, we have disturbing sounds and we have pleasing sounds. According to Oxford Languages, music is “vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.” Music is a language that can connect people from all over. Even if we can’t quite understand the words of a foreigner, we can still hear them. But isn’t it weird how music can cause most of our senses to react? We obviously can hear and listen to music, but have you heard a song and seen a movie in your head? Has a song brought you back to a happy place where you can feel the energy, raise those hair on your arms? Well, maybe you haven’t smelled or tasted something from a song unless it brings back a specific memory. If so, then music most likely has affected all of your senses before. Maybe the emotional and cognitive effects of music are truly overlooked.

Do different types of music have different effects? We have slow music. We have fast music. We have dark music. We have bright music. With research published back in 1998, we have insight on whether the question at hand may be true. In Alternative Therapies Volume 4, Number 1, the test results stated, “With grunge rock music, significant increases were found in hostility, sadness, tension, and fatigue…” also stated, “…after listening to the designer music (music designed to have specific effects on the listener), significant increases in caring, relaxation, mental clarity, and vigor were measured…” We could speculate that this may be because of various variables. Usually grunge music has a darker tone with harsher instrumentation. And this designer music has brighter instrumentation with a happy tone. Think of grunge music as motocross. Loud sounds of motorcycles, dirty images. A very dirty setting, with a very strong sense of risk taking. The term grunge even means dirt.

Now let’s think of designer music. Maybe a skating rink and arcade would picture this perfectly. The fast paced, happy people in the middle, while there are still some people chilling out the side. The programmed drums and synth sounds are very inviting.

While rap music gets a bad rep for the explicitness, we have to wonder, what benefits come from such music? Well, if you think about the image of a rapper, it is one of hard work and success. Most people associate the rapper image with nice cars, a lot of women, and a lot of jewelry. So what might the listener think about? Exactly! Rap music can help promote confidence. Maybe the rawness and flashy music isn’t so negative after all.

But what about sad music? Why do people like listening to sad music if sadness is associated with pain? With research done by a group of Japanese collectives, they pronounce that, “the results revealed that although sad music was perceived to be more tragic, listening to sad music actually induced participants to feel more romantic, blither, and less tragic. Thus, the participants seemed to experience ambivalent emotions when listening to sad music. This is possibly because the emotion induced by music is indirect, that is, not induced by personal events, which somehow induces participants to feel pleasure as well.” For something to make us feel more romantic, blither, and ambivalent, we must feel vulnerable. And maybe the feeling of vulnerability in a safe place is what can make us happy. In a society with pressure and expectations, we have the need to be strong. But you can’t be strong 24/7. And maybe this when the need to feel vulnerable comes into play. When you feel vulnerable, you want to be comforted. To feel comforted, you would want someone to be by your side who can understand your pain and will listen to you. Most people would not go out to a party to feel comforted, most people would call that avoiding the issue. So we can think of sad music as an emotional connection. We have the singer as the friend by your side and the instrumentation telling you that it’s human to feel weak.

But obviously, if you’re someone who doesn’t like a certain type of music, you would be affected differently. You may be annoyed by grunge if you’re someone who likes RnB Music. But if you do like that certain genre of music, the effects should remain.

Now that we know music definitely has an effect, maybe we can figure out how and why it does. Hearing these instruments and people have an affect on us but what is this weird science behind it all?

The Battle of Two Sides

If we ask different people their opinion on music, they may all most likely say that they like listening to music. Some may not like certain types of music, or no music at all. If we ask them if they think listening to music all day could help them in regular tasks, some may agree and some may say it’s a distraction. Or, some people may say music is just noise and has no effect on mood, and that people are responsible for their own mood.

Now, some people actually do not feel a connection to music, which makes them not hear music the same as others. Divya Abhat, from TheAtlantic.com says, “…in the brains of people with specific musical anhedonia, researchers found that the auditory and reward regions of the brain simply didn’t interact in response to music. As a control, to make sure that musical anhedonics responded to other stimuli, researchers also had participants play a gambling game and found that winning money activated the brain’s reward system just fine.” With knowing this information, it is reasonable to see why the effects of music may seem overrated to them. This is the same type of thing for people who don’t appreciate painted art.

But, there’s a group of people that specifically dislike new music and bash it. The people are likely to say “music isn’t like it used to be.” Others could argue that the content of certain music can have a negative impact on the youth. It is very normal nowadays for The older, experienced, humans to say that pop music is glorifying sex. Rap is glorifying drugs and violence. And others may argue that everything mainstream is pushing these images because it sells.

Others may even say that some of the same ideas were in past music, but people now just can’t seem to accept something new. And others may argue that if you dive deeper into the music, you can actually find good substance. Music is all subjective, just taste. I can understand parents wanting to protect their children from the explicit content. Six year olds should not be singing along with the song WAP, which is an adult song made by Cardi B and Meg The Stallion. But, that same parent should not shame someone else from listening to this song, that isn’t her responsibility. This song may not be good to one mom, but it may make another mom feel a special feeling. But, as a society, it is kind of weird that, for the most part, we can agree on what is a bad or good song. It’s like we evolved to have a standard. Special elements can help us agree, in general. The elements are instrumentation, voice of the singer, lyrics, rhythm, flow, and how the words flow over the instrumentation. All of these elements have evolved as we evolved as humans.

Some people may even say that music has no psychological effect and is a placebo. Sadly, it is proven that listening to music does have its benefits. Music can help while doing fast tasks like cleaning the house, driving to work, writing a quick paper, or even constructing other arts like painting. According to Dogra Shim, “Other important benefits include: Learning creative thinking, Learning to express feelings and emotions, Improving language and reasoning skills. Some studies show music programs can raise intelligence. Music can also improve something called spatial intelligence. This important ability helps with seeing the world and making sense out of what is seen. children who took music increased their IQ. It may be because of the focused attention, memorization, and concentration skills needed to study music.” Sure, for kids exposure to music has a wide spectrum of long term benefits. But even adults can experience effects along these lines. This is evident in many different ways. Sporting event stadiums use uptempo music  to get the fans in the mood for some action. The rhythm of music makes it easier to remember something because it is essentially a repeating pattern. You may not know the lyrics, but you can mumble the melody until you remember. Or, you do not know the words, but you can get a feel with the drums on a song.

Even for depressed musicians, musical therapy is said to decrease the feeling. According to The British Journal of Psychiatry, “…the act of playing musical instruments requires purposeful physical movement. The role of physical activity in averting depression and alleviating its effects is well recognised.” Even though it is making music, it is still related to the concept as the musician making the music will still have to listen and be satisfied with what they are hearing.

But also, what about the people who say people curse too much in music, but they’re the same people who curse a lot in real life? I understand you can control what you listen to, but that kind of makes you a hypocrite. You can curse up a storm, but you get mad when people curse in their own music?

In the end, the emotional and cognitive effects of music are overlooked. Music does help please our senses. It creates a feeling. The sound waves enter the ears, which sends signals to our brain, which then tells us how to react. Different music affects us differently. Uptempo music can motivate us, while slow music can help us relax. Rap music can bring confidence, while R&B could make us feel in love. But, before bashing something, realize that people have different relationships to different things. Certain types of music makes more people more comfortable in certain situations. Different music affects different people differently.

Third Trimester Abortion Serious Effects

Both childbirth and abortion radically change a woman’s quality of life. According to Understanding Abortion: From Mixed Feelings to Rational Thought, women who have no moral objection to abortion go through with their procedure to avoid the trauma of bearing and delivering an unwanted child. But a third-trimester abortion is gruesome, and the trauma can last a lifetime. Whether physical or phycological, there are serious consequences to having a late term abortion.

For some woman, abortion works out for them in the long run, but you cannot deny the fact the possible trauma woman will have to endure. Abortions that are performed after 20 weeks of being in the womb, when not done by induction of labor (which leads to fetal death due to prematurity), are performed by having the woman go through the “Dilation and Evacuation” procedure. The article “The Reality of Late-Term Abortion Procedures” says that this horrid surgical technique includes crushing, removal, and dismantlement of the fetus from a woman’s uterus, weeks before, or after the fetus reaches the developmental age where they could survive without the mother. This procedure can be done whether the fetus has complications or not. In some cases, especially when the fetus is past the stage of being healthy enough to live on its own, late term abortion may involve the lethal injection into the fetus’ heart to ensure that the fetus is alive when it is pulled out or has the ability to survive. That means that without a lethal injection, when the baby is taken out of the woman’s vagina, it has a possibility of surviving. However, according to E. Johnson, that is very rare. This means that when the fetus is extracted, there could be developed parts of the baby that the mother herself could see. This particular procedure is displayed by the story of a woman named Elizabeth, who needed a third trimester abortion by going under the Dilation and Evacuation procedure.

Elizabeth’s third trimester abortion really paints the picture of how traumatic this type of procedure can be. In Brooklyn, NY, Elizabeth had to go through an abortion at 32 weeks because her baby had complications. One week before the procedure, she found out that the baby boy she was carrying for nine months wouldn’t be able to breathe outside of the womb. In the interview reported by Jezebel, she explained that since the fetus was so developed, the doctors had to inject a lethal injection inside the baby. She flew from Colorado to New York to get this shot and had to come back a second time to finish. Since the baby was almost developed, Elizabeth had to get the baby out by natural delivery. Fully knowing you are giving “birth” when the baby has no life was petrifying for her. Once the abortion-doctor had helped her deliver, she had contractions and had to push what was left of the baby out of her vagina.

“It was a delivery. I felt every body part coming out. I felt the whole thing.”

She also states in the interview that it was horrific for her to do go under this procedure since she knew she was giving birth to a dead child. She said it was painful not just physically, but mentally. Elizabeth states in the article that she felt emotionally numb for a very long time. Doctors even used different code word names so that they could mask what they were actually looking for inside of Elizabeth’s uterus. Elizabeth states at the end of her interview that having a late term abortion is traumatic and no where near being “easy”.

Elizabeth’s story is just the start of the physical and phycological damage woman forcefully endure going through a third trimester procedure. Even when the fetus has no complications at all, woman still go through physical and emotional stress when having an abortion; complications on the fetus just leaves the woman with more pain. Woman are informed on the matter of physical trauma by having a late-term abortion, but what they don’t tell woman is the serious mental health issues they can contract. A mental health syndrome that woman are left with after having a third trimester abortion is PTSS, also known as Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Having the fetus’ body parts ripped out of your uterus according to Elizabeth’s story seemed so real and gruesome that it is so hard not to picture. No woman going into an abortion should think that the process is easy and will be fast.

The effects of an abortion out run the procedure itself. Woman go through phycological shock, stress, anxiety, and depression after having a third trimester abortion. They go through this shock because the mother creates a phycological connection with the baby whether they want to or not. Surprisingly, there is a psychological connection between the mother and the fetus as well. The longer a woman is pregnant, the mother-fetus relationship grows. Like normal relationships, the more you put into the relationship, the more you are likely to grow and become more attached to it. For example, a woman who treats her body well by eating healthy is subconsciously demonstrating care and commitment for the fetus without her ever having the intentions to care and commit for it. Being able to physically feel the fetus move around their stomach creates intimacy between the two.

Doctors ripping something out of a woman that subconsciously had intimacy with obviously will produce phycological suffering. This goes to show us that even if a fetus had complications or not, the pregnant woman would still suffer from a third trimester abortion and still end up with PTSS. PTSS is not conditional when it comes to third trimester abortions because whether pregnant woman realizes it or not, they create a relationship with the baby before it is even born. Based on this information, woman will have no choice but to not think about the consequences and experience of this procedure. Third trimester abortions are not easy, and woman suffer major physical and mental consequences because of it.

The Lifeblood of Social Media

Social media platforms can fill users minds with false realities. The way society is expected to look, expected to act, and what material goods people should yearn for, are all a big influence from social media sites. Having all these expectations to live up to at the touch of a button make it easy to get discouraged when reflecting on their own life. With this comes a lower self-esteem and self-worth.  Suicide is too often the tragic result when insecure users compare their actual lives to the supposedly glamorous lives of the people, they follow on social media.

Sites like Instagram and Facebook rely on heavy traffic to keep afloat. Users of the site use likes and comments to keep their profiles on the sites popular and attract other users. Most users fall in the age range of 17-28 years old and are the generation to be most influenced by others. Social media sites now even have people they call “Influencers” who are basically advertisers of products just on a third-party site. These influencer users wear or talk about a certain product and make it look good in order for the general public to want that same thing. In turn online shoppers and users of the particular site think the influencer actually relies on the product in their daily life, when in fact it’s just an ad. These posts just like others receive likes, and with enough likes, it makes the page more popular and generates more users to that page. Many people have started to aspire to be influencers and believe getting a lot of likes on their page the main way to become one. If likes didn’t exist and capture the audience’s eye, there would be no competition online amongst users. People wouldn’t bother to post if there was nothing to compete with making them the lifeblood of the platform. If likes diminished, would the competitive nature of posting content molding themselves into someone they aren’t stop as well?

Since likes and comments are what users strive for, self-esteem will obviously be the first thing effected. Some users are prone to need more attention, positive feedback and affirmation from friends. If these type of people aren’t getting as many likes as they see fit it could tear down their self-confidence. Even with positive feedback and lots of likes, a person will never be satisfied because there will always be a user with more than them.  It’s a never-ending cycle of not feeling good enough. In these situations, it can be easy to see that people who rely on online affirmation to fulfill them could become depressed and anxiety stricken.

According to Igor Pantic’s online article called “Online Social Networking and Mental Health,” anxiety, depression, psychotic disorders and low self-esteem are all the likely results of social networking sites, especially Facebook. These sites have high probability for cyber bullying and the ability to spread rumors and inappropriate pictures. Social media sites have also been seen to be used to try and combat loneliness but often lead to becoming more dissatisfied. All social networking platforms where self-presentation is the principal user activity cause or at least promote narcissistic behavior among users. This toxic mix that social media creates among users give insight to why a impressable teen may take their life because of it.

The type of satisfaction that social media brings users is an addiction similar to one of drugs. Highs and lows of the platform keep people returning to the site. Users get hooked on the feeling of being recognized through social media. Jen Hillard, who wrote an article about social media addiction on the Addiction Center website states “Similar to drug addicts, excessive social networking site (SNS) users display a preoccupation with social media platforms when they are not using them, mood modification when they access these sites, and tolerance to the social rewards obtained on these sites from interactions.” This can be attributed to the standard society has set. Social media sites themselves also have no incentive to decrease the amount of people coming to their sites or want to take away being able to view the interactions that take place. They are in the business to encourage users to become addicted to their site. They do not care about each individual, only their sites success. Therefore, taking likes away would not be something on their horizon, even if it would benefit the welfare of society.

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in youth aged 10–24 years old globally. Many of these people have never even met with mental health services or showed any signs. Many questions were asked to figure out the cause. Research showed that there was an association between increased social media/internet use and suicide in this age group particularly. It seems to be that social media sites have potential to both suggest and reinforce negative thoughts and behaviors. Social media’s influence on suicide is a public health problem that was created and needs addressing. Many organizations are trying to make that a reality from the internet. Seems very counterintuitive.

Many social media sites have teamed up with agencies to try and prevent suicide and increase the self-worth that society and social media platforms destroyed in the first place. The American Academy of Pediatrics warned that social media use can cause depression. Since many negative claims about social media have come to fruition, they are trying to now flip the script. Several social sites are teaming with suicide watch hotlines to create a difference. Facebook even made a new feature which allows users to flag posts that seem suicidal. Mental health researchers are also increasingly analyzing tweets and Facebook messages to find out who is suicidal and try to take steps to better understand suicide prevention.  Social media sites will not be going away anytime soon, so it only makes sense to take this as an opportunity to learn about it and improve.

How social sites effect the world is a multi-level structure. There are several outcomes that differ upon the individual. Not all people are negatively affected by social media or feel the need to receive likes to be validated.  Paid influencers of these sites changed the social media game and made receiving likes popular and the goal. Young social media users that aspire to be influencers and need constant affirmation, can find themselves in a lonely place when not receiving the reactions they expect. Social media can become drug like and addicting because of these needs and therefor result in lower self-worth. Lower self-worth then turns into anxiety, depression, and has even been seen in the worst of cases, result in suicide. Social sites will never stop the amount of likes they get because that would be counterintuitive to their mission, so instead they team with suicide prevention to keep the sites popular. These issues will lead to further problems and the cycle will continue on. Social media and its “likes” cease to see an end, so for now the vicious effects will continue on.

How Can A Child Be At Blame?

Though obesity is the specified issue, the suggested solution also covers a wide variety of other issues that play a factor in obesity and that’s how is a great way to handle the situations presented. Each and every one of these has a different side of the argument but the goal is to convince that there is logical reasoning that children are have control over their decisions and thus their weight as well. Implementing some of these ideas can have positive effects not only on one’s children, but their siblings, cousins, friends, and also their own life because it creates some independence for the child to make the correct decisions.

It’s no secret that businesses target children for their advertisements even if they claim they don’t. Mcdonalds sold ridiculously unhealthy apples with caramel to entice kids into begging their parents and keeping them there with their small jungle areas that the kids love to play in. Kids are learning every single day from their experience and though they may not fully understand right away it is something they can come to understand if their weight gets out of control and they find that they can’t do the things they used to be able to. They won’t understand that businesses are targeting them or if they do they won’t care because the product being displayed to them is what they want. However, they will be able to recognize that kids their own age treat them differently, “Children who were obese were 65 percent more likely to be bullied than their peers of normal weight; overweight kids were 13 percent more likely to be bullied.” That kid will also need larger clothing and notice that they can’t run as fast or for as long as they used to and should be able to understand that eating less unhealthy foods can help. What is important is that they don’t need the newest device or the cheesiest pizza to fulfill their wants and will come to the conclusion that a little resolve can lead to better things and a higher chance at a successful life.

It’s human nature to pick what stimulates more and this applies to some adults too, but once the consequences become apparent it is up to the perpetrator to take responsibility for what they have done. The lack of impulse control is expected in a child and is unexpected of them to make the right choice every time, just like any adult, but to say that they are just children and don’t understand would be implying that a child can’t see that their clothes have grown and that they have gained weight. It’s important for them to go outside and play over sitting at home watching a YouTube video because it’s easier for them to make friends and keep active and for most kids they see a lot of fun in a friend to play with. Mayo Clinic has published an article saying that it is healthy to have a good friend because it keeps you in a good state of mind; if they like to play together then it will also keep them both physically active. There is the aspect of online games that they can play with their friends on but young children don’t want to spend all of their time on a game if their friends are playing outside. The claim that a child would rather play games than go outside is partially true because If a child enjoyed playing a game where you build things they would then be more inclined to building forts outside and creating their own games with them, which are fantastic memories for young kids and want more ideas that video games and Youtube provide them with. Kids can use the things they see on YouTube and in games to boost their imagination, but they do not want to limit themselves to the game.

The parents are to blame not the kids. It is true that parents have sway in how their kids act and turn out, but the parents aren’t the determinant and if their kid sees that the issues the control that the parents have over them will become an obstacle they are willing to climb over. For these children it is much harder for them to identify what is wrong because their parents are telling them wrong is right and right is wrong, but when the child can determine that not everything they’ve been told is true it is up to them to decide how their decisions will affect their future. Parents can’t always be around with work or present with the kids while they’re at school so the child naturally will gain independence and for those working parents who try to have an active role in their child’s life but their kid is still unhealthy it is because that kid doesn’t want to change despite having the tools they need for the change. Most parents would not force their kid to do something they absolutely don’t want to do unless the child needed to do it so a kid that is unhealthy and stays that way is more at fault than the parents who can’t get them to change.

Businessnesses advertise to children to get them to drag their parents there because the kids really liked what they saw and feel that they need to have it, but a parent can’t always give them what they want or have the time to take them and that spawns the independence that allows for a kid to make their own decisions. It is important to note that a child won’t understand the issues with obesity, but they will see the physical changes and if they do nothing they will see that later in life the consequences become more apparent and become deeper entrenched in their daily life. A child is a precious thing that should be cared for but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have their own thoughts and eyes to see a problem they can change.

Causal Argument Rewrite — SmilingDogTheProfWants

Children Make Themselves Fat

Kids make themselves fat. A child from the ages of 4-18 makes the decision to turn on the TV over going outside or picking up a controller to play games over picking up a pencil to do their homework, so why do we think that childhood obesity is a different issue and blame parents for their child’s unhealthy lifestyle? A child is responsible for what they choose to do and for what they want; this means a child that makes poor decisions could end up overweight and won’t choose to do anything about that weight. A kid that wants fast-food everyday, the newest console, watches TV and YouTube constantly will almost always be behind physically when compared to kids who play outside. Children are responsible for their weight issues because they refuse to acknowledge the consequences their actions have on their physical health.

The responsibility of a child wanting to watch YouTube over playing outside falls on the child, not the parent. A child may avoid going outside to watch the newest video of something that peaks their interests like any adult would consider doing, but when that becomes a normality then the child’s health is put at risk. YouTube isn’t to blame as there are always some required after school activities that the school must have for them to do; so there is always something for a kid to do besides sitting around, eating, and watching TV. To get a child a hobby at a young age is beneficial to their health as it keeps them active/busy pursuing a goal rather than indulging in sedentary activities. The health of a child is important and dealing with a major issue like obesity is something they would thank you for.

Funding is needed for school programs to alleviate obesity in our youth. Most existing programs warn students of the dangers of obesity (lack of energy, high mortality) for all demographics. Kids ignore these general warnings because they don’t perceive themselves to be at risk. Roughly 5-20% of them are, however, and battling obesity will become harder as they age. Labeling children as obese can get them bullied, and parents object too when their kids are singled out for attention, however well-meaning. The children’s health is paramount, though, and we can’t be deterred from counseling them regardless of the obstacles.

Children are responsible for their grades, their behavior, and their everyday choices, so their weight should be accepted as something they control too. YouTube is a grand distraction as of late but the choice of doing homework over watching a video should at very least be considered similar to the choice of playing outside over watching a YouTube video. Kids also need to be willing to fight against others’ harassments and not succumb to the insults but understand that there is an issue and that it can be solved with some dedication and a little hard work. Obesity is a rising issue for children across the world and the fault doesn’t just lie with the parents, but the kids who choose an unhealthy lifestyle over an active one.

A Fair Trade

I was lucky enough to have a choice here. I had two main options, to attend my local high school or apply for a vocational school in my county, to which I chose the latter. I was entering a new environment that excelled me above the students at my home high school. Comparing the curriculum of those students who went to my local high school with those in my vocational school was like night and day. Students who were in the same courses as me the year prior to high school graduated with about the same amount of courses I took in my freshman and sophomore year. Entering my freshman year of college, I show up in the system as a sophomore because of how many credits I was able to transfer from my highschool. Not only did I receive college credits but I also received a taste of college work ethic before any of my peers. My school was part of a dual enrollment high school program where I was able to take courses at a community college campus for my senior year and truly get a feel for what it was like.  Those who went to my local high school didn’t seem to have as much of an opportunity as me in this regard. Looking back and seeing the disparity between my two choices, I am a firm believer that students who partake in vocational education and or early college options provide major benefits over those who don’t have this option or choose not to pursue it.

Joel Vargas,  the author of the article “Blending high school and college can sharpen the focus of each”, states that “Earning a high school diploma is a necessary but insufficient step toward supporting oneself and one’s family.” This is the complete truth. A high school diploma is no guarantee of a job at an engineering firm or medical center. The blending of high school and college gives graduates a head start on their career. The article compared early college students to regular high school goers. The results were as follows: 90% of early college students graduated high school compared to 78% annually, 30% of early college students earn an associate’s degree or postsecondary certificate with their high school diploma compared to very few nationally, and that early college graduates are more likely to earn a degree than those who did not attend early college.

It is inevitable that students will drop out of high school each year for reasons in and out of our control. So let’s focus on what is in our control. As stated previously, students are dissatisfied with their courses and find them boring, leading them to the end of their school career. How to fix this, give the students a choice. It is highly more likely that a student in a class they are interested in will produce greater results and efforts than a class they are much more dissatisfied with. For example, someone who loves working with computers will most definitely feel more willing to take a class focused around computer software than one where they are not. As stated in College Knowledge by Sarah Hooker and Betsy Brand “High school dropouts report their primary reasons for leaving school were that classes were uninteresting or irrelevant to the world beyond high school.” Each student is different so when what they are interested in isn’t an option, it feels like there is no reason to participate. That is where career academies and early college high schools change the game.

Career academies provide a wide arrangement of different fields to be focused in such as engineering, medical, computer science, and construction just to name a few. No two schools are the same, and the same can be said about these career academies but they typically have the same goal. To give the students a learning environment with concentration focused curriculums for different fields and hands on experience. I can say from personal experience that I am not one who loves the cookie cutter schooling format. That is why I was so fond of this new system that I was introduced to. My courses concentrated towards different parts of the engineering field and other related courses bundled in made me much more intrigued with school in general. I was enjoying what I was doing and much more willing to perform to a higher degree in these classes. And with that, the results showed positively, and I was much more interested in going to school each day to learn something new.

This isn’t only for me as the career academy approach has engaged and encouraged students for multiple decades and still proves to be working. As we see in “High School Career Academies: A 40-Year Proven Model for Improving College and Career Readiness”, the author, Betsy Brand states “career academies are one of the very few educational models that has developed “National Standards of Practice” to encourage continuous improvement.” This is a great point and what we need to start doing more of. Putting someone in a position that they don’t want to be in or don’t feel comfortable with and giving them an objective will not produce results comparable to those in their comfort zone. Schools need to be willing to work with the students and cater to their needs and interests. Students will be much more willing to work with their schools to the highest potential if the effort they put in is being matched by the schooling system. This isn’t a fair trade for the students. Give these kids more variety towards what they want and the results will begin to show. Trying to force the same curriculum onto every student is nowhere near a fair trade for both parties. The students tend to work with the schooling system, so they should expect a fair amount of effort put in on the other end.
