1 Response to My Hypothesis – Jets1313

    Interesting topic, Jets.

It would be tempting to gather a bunch of anecdotes about the “easy” sentences served by a few notorious celebrities and consider your hypothesis proved, so I want to caution you against that approach. If what you surmise is actually true, it should hold true across a wide spectrum of cases and be quantifiable. It may be absolutely factual that celebrity is a mitigating factor in sentencing decisions. On the other hand, you may discover that what matters more than celebrity is wealth. Of course, they often go hand-in-hand, but you’ll be obligated to distinguish between them.

Bill Cosby is certainly a celebrity. Most likely, his fame and power shielded him from accusations for decades. But once he went to trial and was convicted, how does his sentencing compare to the average first-time sexual offender’s?

And now that he’s been in jail for several months, does this new status of joining the general prison population seem like unfair preference?

I haven’t read the articles. I’m just suggesting you do as a first exercise in testing your hypothesis against anecdotes.

Here are sources I gathered with a quick Google Scholar search for
    “lenient sentences” celebrity

Give them a look, Jets, and see how they help you clarify your thinking. Let the research guide your evolving hypothesis until you land on a thesis that is proved by the evidence.

When you decide to revise this Hypothesis, please don’t start a new post. Just open this one in Edit and Update it. If you want another round of critique, just put it back into the Feedback Please category.
