Stand Your Ground is a law that states that in the act of self-defense it is acceptable to kill someone. The law can create a culture of violence. Under the “shoot first” laws, violent behavior can be engaged in the name of self defense and people basically have a license to kill. Conflicts such as road rage, neighborly disputes, and suspicion of other races, are now resolved with guns. More killing will occur because people will use the self-defense excuse. The reason I believe these laws will increase the number of murders in Florida is that “justifiable” killings have tripled since the Stand Your Ground law passed in 2005. When a person is allowed to take the law into their own hands, they endanger everyone around them. My rights come first if I have a gun and you don’t you’re out of luck.
This can affect the safety of the neighborhood if people do not know about their neighbors. There is already more violence than ever before and it will continue to get worse if these laws are passed. The passing of these laws increases the risk to of injuries. In short, it seems as if Stand Your Ground creates more trouble than it’s worth. The repeal will determine whether we respect our citizens’ lives, not repealing will respect the criminal.
