Reflective Statement-G90

Core Value I: Understand that writing is a practice that involves a multi-stage, recursive, and social process. (In particular, students should address how they have engaged in self-directed revision.)

The way this core value was understood and used in my writing this semester was through revision and the constant implementation of advice from friends and peers. The way I edited these papers was through the help of friends and peers. This process of getting other people’s eyes on my writing really helped in finding errors within my writing. Whether that be sentences that didn’t make sense or just general grammatical errors I was able to fix and create better papers through this process. Doing self revisions on my papers allowed me to fix the flow of the paper and fundamental errors within creating a stronger paper. I was able to best

Core Value II. Understand that close and critical reading/analysis allows writers to understand how and why texts create meaning.

Being able to critically read and analyze any given text allows for the ability to create strong arguments within a paper. I did this through carefully reading and taking notes on sources. This allowed me to successfully convey my ideas within my writing and to explain and simplify for readers who won’t be informed on the topic I write on.

Core Value III. Understand that writing is shaped by audience, purpose, and context.

All writing is shaped by the audience, its purpose, and its context. With my writing trying to make the argument for shifting the wealth of a population can be very hard to make. I had to find a way to make a UBI digestible to the average human being. I gave my argument a purpose by showing its coming necessity and its practicality. I gave my argument context by using the sources I had researched. Giving the context of the research and the changing economic climate also helped the audience understand the purpose of the paper as well.

Core Value IV. Understand the role of information literacy in the practice of writing.

Knowing the information from which you are using is critical in creating a strong paper. If you don’t know what information is within your sources how can you create a strong argument to convince an audience to support your argument?

Core Value V. Understand the ethical dimensions of writing.

Being ethical within an argument is one of the most important value. This value constitutes that you don’t plagiarize and to create arguments in good faith. Plagiarizing is extremely unethical as you are presenting someone else’s ideas as your own. This is disingenuous to not just your audience, but yourself as well. Creating an argument in good faith is essential in having an argument. If an argument has merit than the argument itself and the sources to back it up will be all you need. Arguing in bad faith can win you an argument, however it is extremely unethical and morally wrong.

Rebuttal Rewrite-G90

A Universal Basic Income (UBI) is a radical idea for the current major political ideologies. Both Democrats and Republicans oppose a UBI. Opposition to a UBI is no different when it comes to the U.S political machine. Republicans will say its too expensive and that handouts don’t work, while the democrats won’t support it in fear of losing their base and the next election cycle. This system for the U.S political machine is a large problem for the everyone within the U.S. Republicans can get their bills and laws pushed through while democrats can’t get much done on a federal level. A UBI would be no different if it entered the congressional floor, but taking a look at the capitalistic arguments against a UBI one can see the flaws within their points.

One of the first arguments against a UBI is that it’s too expensive. This is true, funding a UBI would require a raise in taxes/change in government expenditure and a rise in the U.S deficit, however this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. A raise in the U.S deficit can in many ways be beneficial. Many countries invest money and provide loans that make up the U.S deficit. Those countries want the best in the U.S as if the U.S defaults on these loans then the other countries will lose money on their investment. This is what keeps the U.S and many countries at peace and afloat. Most countries have invested within the debts of other countries. This encourages trade as a prosperous economy increases the purchasing power of that economies currency. This, in turn, increases the worth of the loan held by the foreign country. This enclosed system is one of the best ways of keeping peace. You wouldn’t want to attack a country that holds a lot of your loans. That would be a loss for you. So claiming that a UBI would be expensive is very true, but this does not mean that it wouldn’t be worth it for the betterment of humanity. This is the fundamental flaw within republican ideology. This tunnel vision on the idea of the individual is extremely toxic for anyone thats not in the upper middle class or beyond. You can’t pull yourself up by your bootstraps if you’re living paycheck to paycheck. It is unrealistic to believe that will ever be possible.

Another talking points that those along the capitalistic thought process is that a UBI is a handout rather than an incentive. This a strawman plain and simple. A UBI is never meant to be a permanent solution for a permanent future. No one can predict how the future will turn out. This is impossible. If we look to what was predicted for today one hundred years ago everyone would laugh. A whale bus for underwater travel is ridiculous in the lense of today. If you look at a UBI in what studies have been conducted you can see that this isn’t enough money to live off of. The ideology behind a UBI is to allow for more economic freedom within a changing landscape with the rise of automation. Most participants in these studies anyway are also on welfare programs. To keep taxes lowered it would be logical to change where taxes are spent. Whether that be taking from the military and/or welfare programs a change in spending would be made. A UBI is a complex issue to just write off as a handout especially when it isn’t meant to be a handout. It is meant to allow for the economic freedom to better themselves. If you look at the trial in Canada that was cut due to regime change you can see just how little they were actually getting. Participants received $12,600 to live on in a year. Now yes you could live off of $12,600, but the life that you would have would be disingenuous. You would just be living above the poverty line. To maintain a healthy life would be impossible to achieve. This money is just a cushion. Not to live off of, but to allow for the creation of mistakes in economic ventures. The strawman built by those of the capitalistic mindset would be impossible given the current economic system.

The final point to be brought up is that welfare, as it is right now, isn’t going anywhere and this is the strongest of the three points. With automation on the rise the biggest challenge to solve is the older population. The older population will have a harder time adapting to the new economic landscape. Specialization training into fields such as computer science and many public service jobs are extremely difficult and mentally taxing. For a large part of the trucking business the truckers don’t have high school diplomas. This is a large obstacle to overcome and a UBI would not solve this. This isn’t what a UBI was meant for and these obstacles won’t be easy to defeat. This is what the future holds in store for us. These challenges will be the forefront of policy making in the given future. There are solutions to these problems however. One could be that we halt the technological advancement of mankind and this is unlikely. Doing so would require state violence and this would not be put up with. The most likely situation would be for some people would fall through the cracks while politicians try to figure out what to do to fix it.

With all these we can only see that one has any real merit. How to solve that problem will require great effort and sacrifice. Whether that be moving towards a more socialistic/communistic economic system or the halt of technological advancement we won’t know. Only the future can provide answers as we move towards further automation. Although a UBI isn’t a permanent fix it is a great step towards the imminent future. The sands of time stop for no one.

Definition Rewrite-G90

How shall we battle income inequality? According to Emmanuel Saez, of UC Berkeley, The top .1% took in as much as 188 times as the bottom 99%. This is a ghastly statistic that almost seems unbelievable. Automation plays a huge roll into why this is happening at an accelerated rate. Cheaper labor equals larger profits. So when a corporation can find a way to cut costs they will. Whether that be lowering wages or turning to automation. Profits over people hurt people every time with fighting a wageless machine for work. Having to compete with machines by taking lowered or stifled wages make living comfortably extremely difficult and/or impossible.

According to the EPI (Economic Policy Institute) the incomes of the top .1% has gone up by 157% since 1979 while the bottom 90% has only grown by 22.2%. Which if just looking at the percentage for the bottom 90% looks great, however comparing it to the top .1% you can see just how outrageous it really is. In 1979 the average income for the bottom 90% was $29,608 while the top .1% earned $622,018. In 2017 on average the bottom 90% made $36,182 while the top .1% made $2,756,865. This ridiculous growth within nearly half a century has created more problems for the average U.S citizen with stifled wages, unemployment and cuts to menial labor and the requirement of heavy specialization to find work.

When corporations find ways to cut costs through stifling wages creates a huge benefit for consumers. Lowered prices on goods and services allow for consumers to have a surplus of income. This is great from the consumer’s point of view, however from the worker’s point of view, the view from beneath the boot starts looking quite bleak. For the worker, stifled wages has made it quite difficult to live a comfortable life like the well off consumer.

Now A UBI (or a Universal Basic Income) would help redistribute the money from the very top to the very bottom. How does a UBI work? How a UBI works is that it gives every citizen within a country a certain amount of money for people under a certain wage line. This (in theory) would help those who are on the bottom survive and thrive in the ever growing economy. This extra income could be used for food, gas, public services, etc. This extra income would help those on the bottom more economically free to invest and better themselves while the job market changes. A UBI could be used to help put one through college or through a trade school. A UBI could be extremely useful for those on the bottom of the income ladder.

There are many ways to battle income inequality. Whether it be through a larger welfare state like the scandinavian countries or a UBI like Finland. Finland at this moment has a study on a UBI using a lottery and randomly selecting individuals to be apart of this trial. This trial has concluded and the results for the first year have been published. These results show that those who received the money have become less stressed, more confident in finding work, and healthier in life according to Finland’s Labour Institute for Economic Research. Now only the first half of the study has been published so nothing can be confirmed. With the second half of the research not being published until 2020 we have to look at what was published and the results aren’t the best results. Though they aren’t the worst results.

These findings show partially what was thought what a UBI would do. It did increase happiness. This could be for a multitude of reasons. It could be because they had a little more financial freedom, as in, they could pay bills they were worrying about, repay debts, eat healthier, etc. This is great in a democratic sense that these people were able to feel less hopeless and hopeful and confident for the future, but in a capitalistic sense it would be seen as a negative as the participants of the study’s job prospects didn’t really improve. According to Finland’s Labour Institute for Economic Research compared to the control group those who did receive money they worked on average .4 days more in 2017 and earned $24 less. This would show that nothing has changed in a capitalistic sense, but we also have to remember that this is just a one year chunk of a two year study. We won’t know until 2020 for the full results.

Now those who align their thinking among the right wing will say that income inequality isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Right wing ideology aligns itself among a hierarchy, while left wing ideology aligns itself among an egalitarian mode of thinking. Right wingers generally believe that billionaires are on top and those who are impoverished are on bottom is the correct way because of how hard those billionaires worked. However, this can easily be dismissed as those who have more money have a much easier time making money than those who have less. Fixing income inequality is scary for those on the right wing because those on the right wing tend to be richer, older, white men who would be affected by this. A UBI, no matter how scary it may be, does make it easier for those who are more impoverished and allow for more financial freedom to compound wealth. Although an egalitarian mode of thinking may clash with those who align their thinking to that of a capitalist mode of thinking it still is a benefit to fight income inequality because it would be beneficial to the market. From a simple supply and demand thinking we can see that if more people have more money to spend within a country’s market than the richest hoarding wealth then the market would be less active.

Fighting income inequality is a very difficult task within the United States. With many challenges to get past within the United States government we will be able to combat income inequality. A UBI would be the best way to do so as it would level the playing field and create a diverse market of an increased amount of consumers. A UBI is the first step towards fixing the problems in today’s economy.

biggarz-Definition essay

It seems counterintuitive that many people talk about minimum wage and their pay. However, do they actually know what they are talking about. Minimum wage has been around for decades fluctuating at different prices over the years, but it has not changed its purpose. We’re going to be looking at the term minimum wage to see exactly what it entails. Clearly, if one were to separate the term to two words ‘minimum’ and ‘wage’ it can be easier to get a better understanding.

Let’s take the term minimum for example, this term meaning, one, “smallest or lowest” or even, “required.” Yes it is a simple term, but when you look into it a word that means small doesn’t seem that small anymore. This is only the literal meaning for the word, now we will go one step further into the real world. Some jobs have quotas to meet whether it is shipping or sales in a certain amount of time, there are things that need to be done. Again that would be considered the bare ‘minimum’ to be exact. Talking about it in business terms the word can have a different meaning. When putting money involved businesses main goal is to make the most profit they can. Which in theory is simple, however there are always small factors to take into account. Look around the world, the word ‘minimum’ is all over and used in so many ways clearly showing its importance. Also every place has a different understanding of what it actually means. However, most of the time it could have a bad connotation for example when talking about workloads, one would get judged for doing the bare ‘minimum’ at work. Not only this, but now take the term ‘wage’. Most thrive for this and usually this is what motivates people like you and I so to say. The correct definition for the term is, “a fixed regular payment, typically paid on a daily or weekly basis, made by an employer to an employee, especially to a manual or unskilled worker.” Another meaning could be wage is looked at as a salary for inexperienced workers. Pretty much money is the simplest term to get from a word like wage. Take the example of how the word ‘minimum’ has multiple meaning all over the world, it is the same for ‘wage’ as well. We see why the debate of these two words separated are an issue now the phrase ‘minimum wage’ is even worse.

For years the value of minimum wage has gone up and down like a rollercoaster. The economy cannot decide the exact price range of where it should stay. It seems counterintuitive that taking both definitions and putting them together that finding the “smallest” amount of “money required” to pay these people should not be such a hard task. Again such simple terms, but to make it even clearer, “Minimum wage is meant for small business.” Not only does the word small show up, but there is too much complication for something that is meant to be small. What this means is the term minimum wage has gone up and gone down throughout history, don’t you think it should be time to actually set up an actual ‘minimum wage’ where there is little to none increase. Or even set it to a price where one making minimum wage is required to get paid the right amount for the effort they put into the work. Having set wages for different degrees of work has been working for years with salaries, why not use that knowledge to go into minimum wage and work it from the ground up. Clearly, one can understand that having a phrase that means ‘small’ or ‘least’ is the complete opposite of what it means politically. In certain parts of the world there are laws where one can not be paid below a certain amount of money, which we see here in the U.S. However it seems odd since wouldn’t this technically be called ‘minimum wage’ since it is the lowest point where it would be illegal for workers to get paid that. Isn’t the whole meaning of minimum wage. Many questions could be asked from that however that is just a guideline mark and for most if not all times the wages that workers get paid are way above that price level. The laws state that the actual definition of minimum wage “ as the minimum amount of financial reward that a worker receives for working a specified period of time” meaning as one works a specific time you get paid per time you work. It is truly crazy that a phrase so small and simple could have such a big impact overtime in the world.

Reflective Statement- NYAJ32

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

Being recursive is a very important skill that I have learned in this class this semester. As the semester began I questioned this theory, but as I went on in the cource I realized that my writing was not up to par. Rewriting is extremely important. Below I have attached my definition essay rewrite that shows how I demonstrated my rewriting skills.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

During my time is this class I learned to properly cite my sources and how to incorperate them into my writing. Before this class, I did not know how to cite my sources without citing the author each time with the page number. This class taught me how to properly fix this issue. Then I learned how to synthesize my ideas based on my sources. My ideas came from the source and not the other way around. Below I attached my causal rewrite where I demonstrated this.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

Throughout the semester I have learned that it is extremely important to revise my work. As the semester goes on we learn ,,,,,,,,,,,,,l techniques on how to make our writing better than it already is. This is why we do rewrites. Attached below is my visual rhetoric rewrite. My first one, which I thought was good at the time, turned out to be not so great. I realized I did not have much detail. As the semester went on I figured out how to improve my visual rhetoric so I rewrote it.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

Throughout my essays I incorporated many sources into my writing. I did not even use them all in my texts because some of them just gave me ideas to work with in my writing. Once I had all my sources from all my essays I was able to put them all together in my final paper. It was a skill taught in class how to transition my ideas and converge them into one. Below I attached my Final Paper that proves this.

Research- NYAJ32

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

Appropriate citation is extremely evident when writing an essay. When I first wrote my essays in the class, I cited my sources but not properly. We had a workshop in class on how to cite in APA format and then also how to do the annotated bibliography. I am very happy at how mine turned out because of the workshop in class. Attached below is my annotated Bibliography.

White Paper-biggarz

Hypothesis:

  1. Minimum wage in the U.S should not be raised because of the negative impact it would have on the economy.

https://www.nber.org/papers/w0846.pdf

Brown, Charles; Gilroy, Curtis; and Kohen, Andrew. “The Effect of the Minimum Wage on Employment and Unemployment.” Journal of Economic Literature, Vol. 20, No. 2 (June 1982), pp. 487-528.

It seems counterintuitive that out of the bigger reasons to this topic, the one reason that I did not think could go into much detail is the complete opposite. The main focus is the employment and unemployment factors. In the first section microeconomics is looked at as we see the simple supply and demand curves. Not only that, but it is looked at in a single market. In addition to this, but not limited to, more and more models are looked at getting complicated as one goes on.

https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-319-74448-3#about

It seems counter intuitive that there are many different problems too minimum wage and people don’t know that increases here and there are a threat to their own selves.

Lee, C. E. (2014, Oct 02). Obama outlines economic case ahead of midterms; president calls for policies such as raising minimum wage, extending unemployment benefits. Wall Street Journal (Online) Retrieved from http://ezproxy.rowan.edu/login?url=https://search.proquest.com/docview/1566929754?accountid=13605

This is for the rebuttal. Saying that raising the minimum wage will be beneficial, plus it will help unemployed find jobs.

Sawchuk, J. (2015, Mar 31). Minimum wage increase creates unemployment.Alberni Valley Times

It seems counter intuitive as one would think raising something will benefit ones around each other. However that always is not the case just like for minimum wage for example. When one raises the minimum wage there are going to be opportunity costs for it.

My Reflection

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development. C

In this class I used the blog as an interactive and social resource to connect with my instructor, to correct my mistakes and to ask any questions. I used this best in my Definition essay, I thought my essay sounded too much like a causal argument, so I added it into feed back please and was able to make the essay fit tin the definition category and made many changes in it. His responses were never a straight forward text to put into my work, so I had to research and work for it as well as change most of my original work. The best part about the blog was that I was able to then put my work in for more feedback and have some more feedback, and the feedback was usually a conversation between both of us.

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

Throughout the semester I have been researching in depth and have been studying pieces in order to improve my critical reading skills. In my rebuttal Rewrite essay you can see clearly how I compared pieces of writing and came to conclusions on some of those arguments. I used two different pieces to create a conversation and with the help of the blog and other activities that were on it, I was able to read others work and make my own thoughts based off of ones of others.

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

This core value means that I know who I am writing to and that I am consistent throughout the whole essay with this purpose and audience. This is most clearly seen in my rebuttal essay because I tried to write it as if I was an executive of NCAA defending myself and I tried to write the other parts as if I was the athlete because I am an athlete and I understand the pain of not getting something that you truly deserve. It also means that my visual arguments have a purpose, and that I understand their purpose.

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

This core value is about how or if I grew as a writer and critical thinker. Throughout this class we had to read and write things in depth. With all three arguments we had to have 1000 meaningful words and no fillers. Also in the purposeful summaries assignment we had to break down what a summary is as well as the hypothesis white paper where we had our paper broken down and had to change it continuously. In my whit paper I would change my hypothesis and ask questions. I also got to read many articles in depth to meet the expectations of this core value.

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

This core value represents academic integrity and that I did not use any information without proper citing and did not steal any ones’ idea. All of my arguments including my bibliography prove that I have upheld my ethical responsibility to be completely original and to not plagiarize. In my annotated bibliography I state cite each source and have a paragraph of how I used that source in my essay. This core value is to uphold the integrity of others work.

Reflective Statement- HazelnutLatte

Core Value 1. My work demonstrates that I used a variety of social and interactive practices that involve recursive stages of exploration, discovery, conceptualization, and development.

I made sure to use, to my full ability, every source possible in order to edit my papers in the efficient amount of stages that they required. A perfect piece of writing is never crafted on the first draft, and must be revised multiple times to make sure that it is in the best shape that I could have made it to be in. In order to meet this goal I had to make sure that I was constantly looking for feedback in my writing, and making changes as I received feedback. I revised my essays multiple times on the day that I wrote them, and then went back and revised them again when writing my rewrites. I met this goal by working on my rewrites for the mini essays, for example, the causal essay. I read over my causal argument multiple times, editing, and perfecting my work with each revision. https://rucomp2.com/2019/04/29/causal-argument-rewrite-hazelnutlatte/

Core Value 2. My work demonstrates that I read critically, and that I placed texts into conversation with one another to create meaning by synthesizing ideas from various discourse communities.

To achieve this goal I made sure to have multiple sources intertwine with one another throughout my research paper. In order to ensure that all of my research demonstrated that I read critically, I made sure to go through each source carefully and pull the most important information from each text, and cited them throughout my work. This helped me support my reasonings, connect different ideas together, and further explain my hypothesis in more detail. Without doing this, my sources and evidence would have no significant meaning to the reader. The texts from my sources were explained in order to give the reader a better understanding of what my paper was really about, and how every piece of evidence related to one another. https://rucomp2.com/2019/04/20/research-hazelnutlatte/

Core Value 3. My work demonstrates that I rhetorically analyzed the purpose, audience, and contexts of my own writing and other texts and visual arguments.

Throughout all my pieces, especially the research assignment, I connected other author’s ideas to my own by citing the sources within my text. I achieved this goal by making sure that my ideas could be supported or argued by another’s and explained their purpose by comparing the two ideas. Using in text citations allowed me to show how my evidence either backs up my argument or how it refutes my argument, and allowed my readers to see an insight into the ideas and theories of other researchers. Without these in text citations and further evidence, my paper would have had no point to it other than to give my opinion. The purpose was to create a hypothesis and research to discuss the issue at hand, and give the readers the facts of what I have found, and not just an opinion that I had created. https://rucomp2.com/2019/04/20/research-hazelnutlatte/

Core Value 4: My work demonstrates that I have met the expectations of academic writing by locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations.

I demonstrated this core value by pulling together my resources and evaluating each one of them in every one of my pieces. By evaluating each source that I have gathered, I was able to support and back up my own ideas throughout my research assignment. I have especially met this goal in my visual rhetoric assignment where I have evaluated each scene, every second, to support what I believed was happening in each scene. By evaluating the illustrations I was able to give evidence as to what was happening without the audio being on. The interpretations that I wrote about, based on the visual evidence of the video that I was watching were correct when I went back and watched the video with sound. This showed that I had met my goal of effectively locating, evaluating, and incorporating illustrations and evidence to support my own ideas and interpretations. https://rucomp2.com/2019/04/14/visual-rewrite-hazelnutlatte/

Core Value 5. My work demonstrates that I respect my ethical responsibility to represent complex ideas fairly and to the sources of my information with appropriate citation.

I achieved the goal of meeting this core value because even when my evidence and sources refuted my hypothesis, I made sure to give credit where credit is due through citations, and I explained the other author’s ideas with respect. Even if I did not agree with what an author from one of my sources wrote, I still included their opinion to ensure that my paper was the best research paper that it could be. In my rebuttal essay, there were many cases that involved the study of schizophrenics involved in homicide. One study refuted my argument that schizophrenia alone causes violence in people, but I made sure to properly and fairly represent the ideas in the source and give a citation where needed. https://rucomp2.com/2019/04/30/rebuttal-rewrite-hazelnutlatte/

Broke Scholarships

The accomplishments of male athletes in the division 1 football and basket basketball level is outstanding. These athletes are the best in the world at what they do. There are only a select few that can perform at the level they do. While they make insane plays, millions of people stand in awe and throw their money towards these players and these teams. The problem with this is that they do not receive any of that money. Athletes are “paid” with scholarships, not cash. Scholarships are ways college can make an athlete think they are getting paid, when they are not.

With the NCAA making well over a billion dollars on athletes success, it should make sense for the NCAA to pay their “Workers”. College football coaches get contracts worth tens of millions, while their counterparts get scholarships worth virtually nothing. With the athletes generating nearly 1 trillion dollars in the last 40 years, getting a degree and a well paying job would only account for 5% of their contribution. The word your looking for is slavery. although no one is being forced to do anything, they are enticed to work hard every year just to have the smallest chance to go pro. While all the executives and coaches are banking off of them.

College is supposed to be about getting an education, but for these big schools that make 8-9 figures on athletics they put pressure on the athletes to perform and the athletes wind up taking easy classes. Most of the time they pass classes they would normally fail. The world we live in today is all about money. But as Americans we stand up for freedom and having someone else get paid for a job you do is not freedom. It is communism. Imagine someone working at a job. They have all the benefits an average job would offer. They always work to the best of their ability and constantly make huge sacrifices for their job. Then when pay day comes they have to give 100% of their check to their boss, because they have benefits and do not need the pay. This is what college athletes in the big division 1 schools experience. Greedy businessmen and women take advantage of their power to make themselves rich off of others talent, and is something that I thought we ousted in this world centuries ago.

Scholarships have become increasingly worthless due to all these money savages, who are crazed on being rich and have no emotion to the hard working contributors of this booming business. Corporations banking on these players such as Nike and Under Armour, are not even allowed to endorse them. Which I do not think they care about that rule because it saves them a ton of money and they are not taking any of the fall during this controversy if things were to go right and players are paid, only University’s will pay them and businesses won’t give huge contracts. Big businesses are in the wrong as they brand the players with their logo, and support the argument that they receive scholarships, so they don’t need to pay them. These are the Same companies that market their business as being for the players. Players show off their shoes and market their brand and in return big corporations don’t even pay them. There have also been scandals where big companies like Nike will pay an athletes family for them to go to a Nike sponsored school, for their own self interest. They give people with no money and extremely poor living conditions an offer for a lot of money and with out question the athletes take it not even thinking or choosing the school that they would like to attend. These sharks steal from the poor to make themselves richer and they do it on a promise of a contract if they go pro. The big key word is If. Most college athletes in the top earning sports do not make it to the pro level, but they still put in just as much time and energy as the ones that do make it. These are the guys that no one seems to care about. After 4 years of grinding and generating your school millions, your left with a degree that is worth virtually nothing. No Special talent was developed because these schools pushed these kids through classes and pass them without them learning anything. Saquon Barkley of the New York Giants is a prime example of this. He would never go to class but then show up once for the exam and magically finish off with an A. (my sister attends Penn State and she is the same age as him so she had a general education seminar with him) Now most of these guys are extremely un- educated. I think that’s what the university’s want just so no one is smart enough to speak out against them, and it may have worked for years in the past, but this is a new era people are getting smarter and sticking up for themselves more than ever. This situation is almost identical to the situation in the catholic church, when they would charge you so you don’t have to go to purgatory. Then came along Martin Luther and just like Luther, players today are breaking away from the norm and standing up for what they believe. They will not let the rich and powerful university’s take advantage of them anymore and in the future we could very well see a shift in power. power to the people.

Its hard to argue that scholarships are moral . They were originally intended to give free education and housing to reward students for their effort. Now they are a fraudulent contract skillfully planned to look like they are doing the players a favor. These scholarships in relation to how valuable the players are to the school are worthless. The money flows toward the top and the bottom feeder players get nothing but a free education that most do not use and a 500$ stipend.

Reflective Statement-MysteryLimbo

  • Core Value I: After taking Comp 2 my skill in identifying problems such as grammar, sources, and other mecanics have improved drastically. The way we were taught throughout the semester was though conversation more than anything and it helps you see writing/literature from different points of view. Learning in this way allowed me to learn writing isn’t linear and there’s a case to be made about anything in writing. Writing is an argument and understanding that is important for this writing course and any other writing course.  The rewrite mechanic that we used throughout the semester is another example showing how writing isn’t linear, it should be taken in steps.
  • Core Value II. Texts create meaning and spark the initial conversation of any paper. For example for anyone trying to make a point throughout their paper. A good way to start would be by introducing the article or book and providing a quote. The quote will give the paper a good foundation to provide the meaning of the argument of your paper. Although quotes are information meaning can be presented in many ways like even introducing an author is a way of creating meaning.
  • Core Value III. Writing is shaped by its audience. The audience matter is so much because it helps the reader connect with your writing. The writing style is solely based off of its audience. For example, for an educated audience, the writer would use very formal writing because with the audience being educated there would be no need to explain simple things. Your audience is very critical to the delivery of your paper.
  • Core Value IV. Information is the most thing about a paper arguably because it gives your paper validity. Without proper sources a paper could have little to no meaning. If a paper has good reliable academic sources it not only makes that paper credible it also makes your paper a good sources of an argument. Information is very important when writing a paper and it is important to gather multiple academic texts.
  • Core Value V. Writing is about providing information and the ethical part of it is being able to provide correct information. Misleading readers through propaganda is rising problem in the United States media. It is the job of the writer to provide the necessary information so that they don’t mislead their reader. Misleading your reader and making them believe propaganda is unethical on the writers part.
