Thesis: College athletes are tested more physically and mentally then Professional athletes

  1. Professional athletes are tested more physically and mentally then college athletes
  2. Pro athletes play the biggest and strongest guys in the world
  3. They may not be the biggest but they are the hardest physically to play against
  4. Not to include, they leave their families for periods of time to play games
  5. When they get traded they now have to pick up everything and move
  6. If they even have a family, this does seve mental damage to them. Just picking up and moving on a drop of a dime
  7. They have to play the best in the world and move around just as much, possibly more

Coverage: Master of Nothing

Nobody takes a deeper look at the educational system in today’s society. Everyone just seems to be alright with what they have in place and no questions are raised because the results produced are fine. We’ve all heard the quote “if it isn’t broke, why fix it”, so why should we implement a new reformed education style if the current techniques work? I would like to think of this in a sense of, yes, it may work, but can it be better, or, is this the true potential the educational system can reach? Are we really alright with our education now? Each student takes the same courses, gets taught all the general concepts of said courses, and is off to college or wherever they may go after their schooling ends. But can these students really say that they have mastered these courses? What students receive today in schooling is the outline, not the full picture, and this needs to be changed.

In the article Can Depth Replace Coverage in the High School Curriculum?, the author, Fred W. Newmann, talks about, as mentioned in the title, two different factors to look at in teaching: depth and coverage. “We expose students to broad surveys of the disciplines and to endless sets of skills and competencies”. Coverage endorses quantity over quality. Classes are set up in a way so every single topic is covered to a broad extent instead of important topics being practiced and mastered. To master something, you must practice it and continue to use and build off of it, so if something is taught one day and the next day an entirely new topic is forced onto you with no relevance to the prior topic. If this pattern stays true, how is someone supposed to master something? “They passively allow teachers and textbooks to pour materials into their heads, where they will store it for future use in educational exercise. However, the press to “cover” offers little opportunity to develop that material in ways that will help students meet more authentic intellectual challenges.” Think of it like so, there is only so much water each day to water plants. Adding more plants means there is less water for each plant and overall a more unhealthy growth on each plant. There may be a lot of plants but they aren’t the best they can possibly be. Whereas, say there are a few important plants to water and look after. Water is even distributed and the plants are each being developed evenly. Inevitably, much better results will be produced from this group.

Now, we can look at the quality side, or what we call here: depth. As I have stated before, you cannot expect someone to master all aspects of a topic at once and instead need to focus and build upon certain elements to fully master them. “Depth has been summarized as “less is more.” Now I know how this sounds, less knowledge is more? That makes no sense. What Newmann means by less in this sense is the majority of surface level information. Whereas information taught with much more depth has a greater tendency to be retained and used more beneficially. Greater remembrance of the information typically also makes understanding of similar information easier than it would have been prior.

If this knowledge is so great then why isn’t it applied to all classes then by now? Obviously, the implementation of more in depth teaching will come with complications. “We must recognize that the point of education is, in a sense, to cover material — that is, to expose students to and make them familiar with new information”. That is the whole point behind school, to expose us to these ideas and things and as an end goal to truly “be educated”. In today’s society what really is it to “be educated”. To master multiple subjects and topics letting us be able to apply them to our daily lives. We are under the illusion that because the teaching works, then it doesn’t need to be changed. One cannot possibly learn all there is to learn about subjects in their time in school so they get taught the basics and move on. They feel as if this is fine and fall into the trap of general education. If this implementation were to go through, other problems would be uprooted among students as well. More in depth learning leads to more in depth work which may be a complete change of pace from what each student is used to and content with, which could cause complications in learning such as burnout and even the possibility of dropping out.

With these problems, comes solutions. If the curriculum is to be changed then aspects of it need to be changed to accommodate it. Newmann states these aspects as “assessments, textbook selection, state curriculum requirements, school improvement programs, and teacher education. First of all, assessments need change. Multiple choice memorization questions don’t actually show the use of knowledge if someone can just remember a quote from a textbook or teacher. All the small surface level information questions can be removed and replaced with questions that can demonstrate the example of the students mastery of the topics. Second, textbook selection should be focused on in depth details and not just a data dump aimed just for basic exposure of the topics. Third, state curriculum requirements need to work together to create a system for students to get more in depth learning with less redundant electives and unnecessary, useless work. Fourth, schools must be willing to help the students in need and provide them services able to help them if they are having trouble working in depth. Someone can’t just fully comprehend a subject by reading quotes in a book but must be actively engaging in the material. Finally, teachers need to be teaching what is useful and not just what is on the table of contents. Degrees can be earned by just reciting information read once before where instead it should be the teachers job to fully grasp the students and devote great portions of their teaching to the in-depth studies of their respective academic areas.

How Can A Child Be At Blame?

Though obesity is the specified issue, the suggested solution also covers a wide variety of other issues that play a factor in obesity and that’s how I see this best handled. Each and every one of these has a different side of the argument but my goal is to convince that there is logical reasoning with my words and that implementing some of these covered ideas can have positive effects not only on your children, but your siblings, cousins or friends, but also your life as well because it creates some independence for your kid.

It’s no secret that businesses target children for their advertisements even if they claim they don’t. Mcdonalds sold ridiculously unhealthy apples with caramel to entice kids into begging their parents and keeping them there with their small jungle areas that the kids love to play in. Kids are learning every single day from their experience and though they may not fully understand right away it is something they can come to understand if you talk to them. They won’t understand that businesses are targeting them or if they do they won’t care because the product being displayed to them is what they want; what is important is to teach them that they don’t need the newest device or the cheesiest pizza to fulfill their wants and that a little resolve can lead to better things.

It’s human nature to pick what stimulates more and this applies to some adults too. The lack of impulse control is expected in a child and I don’t expect them to make the right choice every time, but it’s important that they understand that some things are either good for them or better than others. It’s important for them to go outside and play over sitting at home watching a YouTube video because it’s easier for them to make friends and keep active. A good friend keeps you in a good state of mind and if they like to play together then it will also keep them both physically active. There is the aspect of online games that they can play with their friends on but young children shouldn’t spend all of their time on here as it does help the mind but it is also important to care for the body. A child would much rather play outside if they had the tools to do it over playing a game. If a child enjoyed playing a game where you build things then they would be more inclined to building forts outside and creating their own games with them, which are fantastic memories for young kids.

The parents are to blame not the kids. It is true, and irrefutable that parents have sway in how their kids act and turn out, but the parents aren’t the determinant. The child has to take these things into account when they make choices because they affect their future in ways that they would never imagine. Parents can’t always be around with work or present with the kids while they’re at school but when the parents play as much of an active role as they can for their child then it’s clear that the child doesn’t want to help themself despite knowing the consequences. No good parent would force a kid to do something they absolutely don’t want to do unless the child was required to do it because that creates the issue of the kid not wanting to do it again.

Businesses advertise to children to get them to drag their parents there because the kids really liked what they saw and feel that they need to have it or something will happen, but a parent can’t always give them what they want or have the time to take them. It is important to note that a child won’t understand the issues with obesity because they either can’t fathom the consequences or that if they are overweight they don’t see or experience the issues down the line like a lack of mobility and energy. A child is a precious thing that should be cared for but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have their own thoughts and will to do what they please.

Man vs Computer

Self driving cars will be inputted with algorithms that help the car drive safely and keep the car on the road, but when buying the self driving car should you be given the choice to decide what decisions your car makes? It depends on what kind of decisions we’re talking about, the decisions like where is the car going to take me and what roads the car should take are some of the decisions that the driver should have. When faced with the decision to make ethical choices is one that is very tough and should not be made by the driver. The car is built to keep the car safe and the occupant safe. You should not be able to choose if you should hit a dog or swerve off and hit a pole, those choices should be made by the algorithms, and if you do not believe that is not fair then you should not buy a self driving car.

Everyone drives differently no driver is the same and it would make it very difficult for the manufacturers to come up with so many different algorithms to satisfy each persons moral choices. A Computer Scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Iyad Rahwan says “People who think about machine ethics make it sound like you can come up with a perfect set of rules for robots, and what we show here with data is that there are no universal rules”. It is not possible for the companies to make such algorithms that follow everyones moral choices. There are so many different choices that the car will have to make like will it limit damage to the car or will it limit damage to the occupants or will it limit the damage to other things around the car like animals, pedestrians and cause harm to the occupants and the car. These choices are just to complex and the buyer of the car should not be given the option to choose what the car does in these ethical situation.

With the building and manufacturing of self driving cars the decisions should be made by the manufacturers and the specialized teams they have in place to make the car as safe as possible. These teams that these big manufacturers have are some of the smartest people in the world and they know what they are talking about. In an article posted on Towards data science, Andy Lau stats this ” The intent of the inventors is to create a better society for drivers and the planet. In addition, self-driving cars have proven to be significantly safer than having an actual driver; this has been shown by numerous studies and data collected from them. In the long run, autonomous cars will increase efficiency and productivity for people around the world. For more people to feel at ease with self-driving cars, companies, and self-driving car owners should understand they are responsible for the safety of all stakeholders. Risk management techniques can be used to quantify probabilistic risk in a way that is transparent and flexible. To create ethical vehicles, developers should continue to learn from past experiences in risk management and morally challenging situations.” Why should we let the buyer of the self driving car make the decisions of what the car should do in different ethical situations, when scientist and many years of research is put in to building these self driving cars to make the road safe and prevent crashes. We should believe in the choices that the manufactures they would not make a car that does not value the people, they would not make a car that is not safe and won’t protect the consumer. They will put the right algorithms together to allow for a safer road and more efficient world. The owners of the car should leave the decisions making of what the car should do to the people who make the cars and if they do not like that choice then they can drive the car them selves and make the choices on their own.

Waymo is another big competitor in the self driving car world and their teams has put together the first self driving car on the road. The team at Waymo has designed the car to be fully autonomous and are training the car to drive like a human, they are not giving the choice of what the car should do to the buyer. Waymo is working everyday to make the car able to share the road with human drivers, they are trying to fix small things that will allow their car to drive smoothly snd freely on the road. Waymo is the leading manufacturers for self driving car in an article from the verge it said that, ” Waymo already has a huge lead over its competitors in the field of autonomous driving. It has driven the most miles — 6 million on public roads, and 5 billion in simulation — and has collected vast stores of valuable data in the process.”

Another big topic that could be a major issue in the case of letting the owner of the car choosing what choice the car makes is legal issues. If the owner of the car tells the car what to do in a situation does that make them responsible and not the car, because the car is doing what the human said. If the owner does not tell the car what to do then only the manufactures could be at fault for legal issues that happen with the car.

While you would love to know what your car will do in any situation and you wish you could have a say in what it does, but that right now just doesn’t seem to be in the playing field. It is much safer for the people who studied most of their life to and put hours of work into these algorithms to be the ones who say what the car should do. They know what’s best for them and what’s best for their consumers.

Money seems to have a big role in our society; you can’t do much or get far if you don’t have any. Money is valuable in different ways, even when you don’t see it physically. In today’s society you must have faith in the government and in the banking system that your money is being handled in the proper manner; if not, then you would have to hide all of your money under your mattress or around your house. I have no clue what happens in the banks, or how they take care of your money. I always thought money was simple; you either have some or you don’t—that’s it. However, being introduced to this assignment, the Yap Fei, US gold, French francs, Brazilian cruzeros, and debit accounts now seem similar. You don’t actually see your money being transferred. When you get paid, you aren’t handed cash, you don’t receive a physical check, the money’s all directly transferred to your bank account, and you just have to trust that you got more money.

Revised:

Money is the modern day catalyze for success and it’s uses are beyond payments. The modern day has built a reliance upon the government and banks to handle all of the circulating money. Yet, the average person believes that one has money or doesn’t. That same average person also wont know what the banks do with it. Works like the Yap Fei, US gold, French francs, Brazilian cruzeros, and debit accounts are great enlightening tools for the average person to learn. Paychecks are not tangible. One must trust that the bank will back the promised amount with their word.

False Crash Rate Predictions by Opponents

Opponents of increasing the speed limit are quick to jump to the conclusion that increasing the speed limit would simply lead to an increase in crash rates. While this may be true for certain types of roads such as local roads, this is untrue for major highways. It has been found that increasing the speed on major highways does not increase accident rate, but it might actually decrease accident rate. Increasing the speed limit on major highways would also come with some positive effects such as an increased flow of traffic, quicker travel times, and a higher level of concentration.

In the article “Dangers of Increasing Highway Speed Limits,” the author quoted Russ Rader from USA Today who stated, “Higher speeds mean more crashes and more severe ones.” Although it is true that crashes that occur at higher rates of speeds result in higher fatality rates, it is not true that increasing the speed limit on highways leads to higher crash rates. The author of this article provides no evidence to prove that crash rates increase from a higher speed limit. He/she only cited that the increase in speed limit increased the fatality rate. Based on the article “The paradox of driving speed: Two adverse effects on highway accident rate,” it has been proven that an increase of speed limit on highways actually leads to a lower API rate, which in turn leads to a lower crash rate. The faster two cars travel past each other, the less time they are next to each other. This is true for all types of API interactions. It is simple, the lower the amount of time two vehicles spend next to each other, the lower the crash rate.

Critics of increasing the speed limit also like to ignore the multiple advantages that would come along with increasing the speed limit on major highways. One main advantage would be increased traffic flow. In the report from MDPI titled “The Effect of Posted Speed Limit on the Dispersion of Traffic Flow Speed,” they found that an increase in speed limit is directly related to the increase of the speed of traffic flow. Their study found that an increase of posted speed limit by 20 km/h increased the speed of traffic flow by 18 km/h. The increased traffic flow would reduce if not eliminate the hassle from standstill traffic. Increased traffic flow leads to the next advantage of increasing the speed limit: quicker travel times.

It seems to be obvious that an increase in speed limit would lead to a decrease in the amount of time that is spent on the road. Long commutes have been proven to increase stress levels. In an article published by the City Clock Magazine titled “Think driving stress is ruining your life? Apparently it is,” they found that driving leads to people experiencing many indicators of stress like anxiety, high heart rate, and high blood pressure and those who drive more take more sick days and end up in the hospital more often. Each of these effects could lead to more detrimental effects if they continue. The same article also explained that “It has also been found that the longer you spend driving results in lower productivity for your employer.” Low level of productivity could lead to someone losing their job and could be detrimental to their workplace. Driving clearly takes a toll on people and decreasing the amount of time they are driving can lead to many positive effects. Spending less time on the road gives people more time to complete their work and most importantly, more time to spend with their family and friends. The higher level of efficiency, more time spent with loved ones, and lower stress levels would allow people to be happier and even more financially stable.

Increasing the speed limit would also lead drivers to concentrate more on the road. Multiple distractions would be cut out of their commute such as constantly checking the speedometer and surveying the area for police cars. If the driver does not constantly take their eyes off the road to check the speedometer, they are able to be more vigilant to the area around them, instead of having to constantly worry about the speed that they are traveling at. The same effect occurs when drivers are no longer constantly checking all around them for police. Checking for police takes an even greater toll on the concentration of the driver on the road. Drivers check behind themselves, in front of themselves, within the trees, and on the side of the road just in case they catch a glimpse of a Ford Explorer or a Dodge Charger.

Having a speed limit that is higher and more comparable to the speed at which people already drive on the highway would also make people take the speed limit more seriously. For example, the speed limit on the New Jersey Turnpike is 65 miles per hour, but everyone knows that if they go below 80 to 85 miles an hour they are likely to get ran off the road. If the speed limit was 80, maybe people would actually take it seriously. Taking the law seriously also improves the relationship between the people and law enforcement. There would be much less arguing with police officers over tickets if the speed limit actually represented the speed at which most people are actually driving.

The critics of the concept of increasing the speed limit on major highways like to believe that the only effect that would come from doing so would be an increase in accident rate. Not only is that refutation false, they also ignore all of the positive effects that would come from increasing the speed limit. Increasing the speed limit would increase the flow of traffic leading the less stand-still traffic. A higher flow of traffic would lead to quicker commute times. Spending less time on the road is important considering that longer commutes lead to stress and lower productivity. Finally increasing the speed limit would lead to less distractions for the driver, which leads to a higher level of concentration. Critics should consider these points before making the decision of whether or not to support the increase of speed limits on major highways

Favoring the Abuser

Animal abuse is a growing conflict around the world. Animals continue to suffer because of the abuser and are even killed because of it. However, many people believe that the abuser does this because they learn it from growing up in a dysfunctional home but that is not the case. The abuse of an animal is caused from a number of different other things like the abuser’s negative attitude towards animals, the abuser is involved in an organization involved in animal abuse, the abuser could even suffer from mental disorders that causes them to abuse the animal and etc.

One reason the abuser commits animal abuse could simply be that they strongly dislike animals. The abuser doesn’t care what happens and believe animals don’t experience pain the same way humans do. According to Robert Agnew in his article, “The Causes of Animal Abuse: A Social-Psychological Analysis,” he states that “Many individuals believe that animals do not experience pain or, in less extreme forms, that animals have a higher threshold of pain or do not experience pain in response to the same stimuli as humans.” Abusers don’t really think of animals as other living things and take their anger out on them without even thinking. Their dislike of the animals causes them to lash out against the animal. This is not the only cause of animal abuse.

Animal abuse is also caused by the abuser being involved in some sort of organization that contains animal abuse. Hunters, slaughterhouse workers and cockfighters are some examples of this. Robert Agnew has stated in his article, “The Causes of Animal Abuse: A Social-Psychological Analysis,” that “Cockfighters, for example, often claim that it is in the animals’ nature to fight and die: God placed them on earth for this reason and the birds are voluntary and enthusiastic participants in the fighting activity.” The abusers involved in cockfighting believe the birds are on this earth to fight, however this still isn’t the right attitude to have towards these creatures. It still continues to increase the conflict of animal abuse.

Suffering from a mental disorder is also a reason for the abuse of an animal. Antisocial behavior is the main disorder that causes the abuse. According to Elleonora Gullone, in her article “Conceptualising Animal Abuse with an Antisocial Behaviour Framework,” she states, “Further, both animal abuse and bullying have been related to later antisocial behaviours and antisocial personality disorder.” People being antisocial has also increased as well with all the technology we have now in today’s age. The more antisocial people the more there is a chance for those people to turn into animal abusers. According to Lorine Hughes, in her article, “The Crime of Animal Abuse in Two Nonwestern Cities: Prevalence, Perpetrators, and Pathways,” she states that, “In addition, animal abuse appears to be associated with a host of antisocial behaviors among perpetrators.” Antisocial behavior is proven to almost always be in relation to animal abuse and continues to convey the problem.

Another reason the abuse on animals continues is that the abusers believe they are benefitting from abusing the animal. The abusers try to show off by abusing the animals trying to demonstrate that they are tougher than they really are. For example, Lorine Hughes talks a lot about Robert Agnew’s article, “The Causes of Animal Abuse: A Social-Psychological Analysis,” to further her points in her article. She states in her article, “The Crime of Animal Abuse in Two Nonwestern Cities: Prevalence, Perpetrators, and Pathways,” that In addition to material benefits, Agnew (1998, p. 192) argues that animal abuse may produce psychic rewards and be a source of status and prestige, such as would be the case if perpetrators feel they are impressing others by harming animals violently.” A crime being committed for something like this just isn’t worth it at all. Not only is it a felony but it’s just wrong. This is another living thing that is being abused and even killed in some circumstances.

One other reason is that the abuser doesn’t believe the animal doesn’t feel the same kind of pain a human can feel. They don’t think of these living things as feeling the same pain as humans just because they’re different. According to Lorine Hughes, she sates in her article, “The Crime of Animal Abuse in Two Nonwestern Cities: Prevalence, Perpetrators, and Pathways,” that “Singling out empathy and self-control, he argues that less empathic individuals are likely to have trouble understanding the pain and suffering experienced by animals and that individuals with low self-control are ‘more likely to take advantage of the benefits of animal abuse’ and to be ‘less aware of the abusive consequences of their actions for animals, less willing to grant animals moral consideration, and less aware of and concerned about the negative personal consequences of their actions’ (Agnew 1998, p. 194).” The abusers don’t think about what they’re doing before they abuse the animal and don’t consider what will happen to them if the behavior continues.

The number of cases of the abuse on animals continues to grow and it is a problem that is really ignored throughout the world. Their are a number of different causes such as the abuser having mental disorders, the abuser thinking the abuser can’t feel the same pain as humans, or even the abusers believing they are benefitting from creating pain and suffering towards the animal. The abusers being involved in some sort of organization involving animal abuse is another cause of this. Hunters don’t see it as a problem even though they are ending that animal’s life. Cockfighters as well see it as a show. They don’t care what happens to the animal either. They can say that the animals are put there for them to be killed just to make it seem like it’s okay. This problem can’t be ignored any longer. It comes from all these different things just keeps conveying the problem.

Revised:

It is very difficult thrive in today’s society without money. Currency effects more aspects of life than most individuals ever realize. Americans are forced to have faith in the banking system that their money is being properly handled and holds its said value. Money is much more complex than its physical exchange for goods; it does not need to be seen or felt to be transferred. By understanding the this deeper complexity, the Yap Fei, US gold, French francs, Brazilian cruzeros, and debit accounts are all similar in function.
