0:00-0:01- The video opens on a wide shot of a house, looking at it from the backyard. The house is modest but neat. It has one story and the lawn and plants are well-kept. This appeals to middle class viewers and also gets the audience to keep a more open mind toward the homeowner we are seemingly about to meet; if this person keeps his lawn looking so neat, how bad could he be? The house is in a wooded area. There is a patio set with a small grill that again speaks to the potential character of the homeowner. Maybe he’s the sort of person to invite people over for a cookout. All in all, the house looks like it is in a suburban and likely middle-class area because of its modern architecture, wooded surroundings, and upkeep. A light turns on inside the house. The sky is gray but not totally dark and the house is in shadow, so it is either dusk or dawn. Either that or there is a storm coming. It isn’t immediately clear what kind of production this is, but the video quality is professional and high definition.
0:01-0:04- Inside the house, a Black man opens his fridge. It’s hard to tell just how old he is, but judging by his face he’s probably in his 30s or 40s. He has a beard and glasses, and is wearing a robe. The robe further contributes to the idea that it is either the morning or evening. He doesn’t look disheveled, but he doesn’t look immaculately groomed. He looks tired, as if he just woke up, so the video probably takes place in the morning. The fridge looks pretty well stocked. Inside we see milk, orange juice, grapes, bananas, various condiments, jam, and more that is harder to make out. This man is likely not poor. A middle class viewer could recognize and relate to him. By the way he moves his mouth, the man appears to sigh as he picks up the milk. When his body moves slightly to the side as he picks up the milk, a young boy is revealed to be standing behind him. The boy appears to be his son as they are in the same house and generally look alike. The house’s interior can be seen behind them. There is a dark wood cabinet in the kitchen and farther behind that is a room with a bright green wall and a window with sheer curtains. The color scheme evokes 60s style, but the man’s glasses are modern, so it’s likely that this takes place in the present day and the house’s interior is outdated. This further contributes to the idea of this being a middle/upper-middle class house. It was probably built around the 60s, and while it’s a nice, neat house, refurbishment was too high an expense. The aesthetic makes the setting and characters relatable to middle class viewers.
0:04-0:05- The man hands the milk backward to his son, but does it in a way that looks like a dance move. Drawings are taped on the fridge, presumably the son’s. We get the idea that this man cares about his son and likes to have fun with him. He seems like a good dad, and the audience is being encouraged to like him. Outside the window, the sky is brighter, solidifying that it is morning. The milk and the corn flake box on the counter behind the son imply breakfast. Both the boy and the father are wearing pajamas. The dad is wearing a robe, sweatpants, and a T-shirt, and the son is wearing flannel pants and a shirt with a sports pattern, so they’re not wearing anything fancy nor slovenly. They just look like regular, everyday people. The father’s playful attitude makes it seem like they aren’t in a rush. It appears to be a laid-back morning, maybe a weekend, and the dad and son are going to make breakfast together. The dad seems considerably less tired now that he’s started dancing.
0:06-0:08- The dad opens a silverware drawer and takes out a spoon, which he throws behind his back to the son who catches it. The son’s expression doesn’t look particularly enthused but he doesn’t look annoyed or upset either, so we can assume that the father and son are having fun together even if the son maybe thinks he’s too cool to be hanging out with Dad. This seems to be a loving father-son relationship that viewers will be endeared to. The dad is also able to toss the spoon over his shoulder without looking and the son catches it without fumbling, so this might be something they do often. It also shows that the father and son are a good team and have a good relationship since they smoothly accomplish a trick that could have been difficult. It’s reasonable to assume that this is practiced or routine because of how easily they carried out the trick.
0:08-0:10- The father’s feet slide across the floor as he dances. He picks up the corn flakes and takes them over to the kitchen table where the son is sitting with a bowl in front of him. The mood remains playful and fun as the father keeps doing something as silly as dancing around the kitchen. He is clearly trying to create fun, positive memories with his son. The audience likes him for that because he’s being a good dad. This appeals to any parents watching because he’s doing what most parents would want to do for their kids. It’s also admirable because it is the morning and at first the dad looked tired, but now he is energetic and putting effort into creating a special moment with his son despite being tired.
0:10-0:15- The father stops mid-dance and gives his son an expectant look with his hand held out. He looks expectant because of the way he cocks his head and how his eyes are wider. Clearly, the father won’t pour the corn flakes until the son does something that evidently known between the two of them. The son shakes his head and smirks before tapping his father’s hand and ending the pause in the dance. The son’s face gives the idea that he thinks his dad is silly but he appreciates the fun they’re having together. The father waves his arms as he continues his dance and pours the corn flakes in a bowl for the son. On the wall behind them, there are juvenile drawings in crayon or colored pencil that depict a dinosaur, space, and a rocket ship. These appear to be the son’s drawings, so the father hung his son’s drawings not only on the fridge but on the wall, too. The audience understands that he is proud of his son and loves him. This moment is very sweet and heartwarming. The dad isn’t afraid to act silly to create a special memory with his son and the son even plays along. It’s a scene that parents would wish for in their own lives and something that most parents would want to imitate if they love their children like the dad in this video.
0:16-0:24- The dad dances around the back of his son’s chair and does a dance move where he puts his hand on his chest and pops his chest forward and back. He does something that appears to be a moonwalk behind the son’s chair and into the kitchen, but it’s hard to tell because the shot doesn’t show his feet. As his dad passes behind him, the son follows with his head. He’s pretty expressionless and he’s not smiling, so he could be a little embarrassed by his dad’s antics. He doesn’t have a resentful expression though, it’s a pleasant neutral, so even if his dad is acting strange, the son likes his father. The dad’s energy is high and he’s clearly very committed to this moment, even though his son isn’t too enthusiastic. At this point it’s also notable that a second parent has not appeared in the video, and while that doesn’t confirm that this man is a single father, it’s a reasonable assumption. The father is so upbeat as he tries to create a happy moment, and he likely does this often, even if he is potentially doing it alone. It conveys the idea that even if there are parts of life that cause struggles, it’s the parents’ obligation to make their kids happy.
0:24-0:25- The dad moonwalks backward off screen and pours cereal from the box into his mouth. He made sure his son had food before getting food for himself. The phrase “make a moment” appears. At this point it becomes clear that this is a commercial. This is a message to parents, advising them to put effort into making happy memories with their kids. The son sits at the table in the background, looking at where his dad just was, and now he is smiling.
0:26- Now there is a bust shot of the son looking at where his dad just was and nodding, with a satisfied and appreciative look on his face as if to say “yeah, my dad’s a pretty good guy.” The dad doesn’t see this reaction. This conveys a key part of the message, which is that a parent might not always know if they’re making a difference in their kids’ lives or if their kids appreciate them, but they have to keep putting effort in because their kids could be privately appreciative like the son in this video.
0:27-0:30- An overlay goes over a shot of the son eating at the table. The phrase “#DanceLikeaDad” is in the center of the screen with “fatherhood.gov” below it. Now the audience knows that this ad is targeted specifically at fathers. The phrase “dance like a dad” is catchy and also clever because it encourages the upheaval of the stereotype that fathers should be serious and give tough love. The tough stereotype and the deadbeat dad stereotype are especially applied to Black men, so this commercial discourages that harmful stereotype as well.
0:00 ~ 0:02 – Two girls are sitting as far away from each as possible on a couch in a very large archaic looking room. The room seems to be completely silent as neither of the two girls are moving or talking and there is nothing in sight that looks like it would be actively making noise. We can safely assume that this room is a basement based off the placement of the windows. The windows in the top right are at what seems to be almost the ceiling of the room but the blinds are closed so we cannot be 100% certain. The windows are very long and take up about half of the scene in length but height wise are much shorter, maybe about 2.5 feet. In the back left hand side of the room there is a slightly visible fireplace with numerous vases on top of it, a cylindrical head shaped lamp with a tall, thin rod body is next to a large brown piano with what seems to be a stuffed possum sitting on top of it and a nice picture depicting some flowers above it. Closer to us, still on the left side, is an old-looking green chair with a yellow pillow on its left side and an orange blanket slung over the top right of it. The chair looks to be able to fit a maximum of one person in it at a time. In the back right hand side of the room is what looks like a dresser with a lamp similar to the one on the left side of the room standing atop it but this one is much shorter than the one on the left side. About 4 books are on the dresser going from the largest to the smallest in size from bottom to top and a small ceramic duck sitting atop those. A vase shaped sort of like a 1 liter milk jug sits next to the books and is still on the dresser. The vase is dark blue, white, and orange with different thickness stripes of those colors going up and down in the order dark blue, white, orange, white, dark blue. To the right of that dresser the left side of a chair is visible. This chair, much like the one on the left hand side, seems to be older and is stubby and short. The chair is yellow and looks to possibly be leather, and a pillow designed with squares of different sizes and colors is placed in the middle of it. Closer to us on the right side we can see another chair but only the left armrest of it. This one looks to be a little bigger than the rest and is a dull green color. Now, in the center of the room is a short wooden table with several books on the right side of its surface and a cup or two on the left hand side. Right behind the table in the direct center of the room is a brown couch that looks like it could sit three people comfortably. Two girls are sitting on the couch, one on the furthest left hand side of the couch, the other on the furthest ride hand side, creating a large gap in the middle of the couch enough to comfortably fit said third person in between, a yellow pillow on the side of the girl on the left and a white pillow on the side of the girl on the right. The girl on the left is wearing light blue jeans, a t-shirt with some graphic on it, and a pink sweater. She has long, curly, brown hair, she is holding her hands in a way that seems as if she is uncomfortable and doesn’t look like she knows what to do with them so is just messing with her fingers. She is blank-faced and looking to the left but we cannot see what she is really looking at. She looks very uneasy or sad by her body language. The girl on the right is wearing blue overalls and a white t-shirt. She has medium length, straight blond hair parted in the middle and going behind both of her ears. Her legs are crossed and she seems to be doing the same thing with her fingers as the girl on the left. She also is blank-faced but is slightly looking to the left almost in the direction of the other girl. She doesn’t look as uneasy as the girl on the left but looks as if she wants to say something but hesitates after opening her mouth a little bit. The camera pans to an up close side-shot of the girl on the left side of the couch. When closer up the girl on the left looks much more uneasy and sad, she is looking down with a blank stare and kind of shakes a little. Then the camera pans to the girl on the right side with a close up side-shot angle as well. The girl on the right now looks to make an attempt to speak it seems as she opens her mouth looking to the left, which we know this is where the other girl is sitting, but hesitates and does not say anything proceeding to close her mouth. The girl on the right is wearing an earring on her right ear but we can only see the right ear and do not know anything about the left. From this scene, we might now know that the girl on the right possibly wants to say something to the person sitting on the couch with her but we don’t exactly know what she wants to say.
0:03 ~ 0:06 – The camera focuses back to the original direction with the two girls sitting on the couch in the middle of the room. The left girl is now looking at her hands unsettlingly with a blank stare. The girl on the right is now looking slightly more to the right than she had been before with gritting teeth, legs are still crossed. The camera pans closer to the girls at a moderate rate. Suddenly, the upper half of a man who looks to be maybe about 20-23 years old with a smaller body build appears in between the two girls from between the couch cushions. He is wearing a lighter brown turtleneck, has neat dark brown hair pushed to the right side of his head, our perception is his left hand side. His fingers are locked into each other and pushed right up against his chest at around belly button level. He stares at the camera and states something, maybe assessing the situation between the two girls but we cannot be entirely certain. The two girls have the same expressions as before and seem entirely unphased from the man who has just appeared from the couch.
0:07 ~ 0:08 – The camera frame is now entirely focused on the man in the turtleneck. You can still see the two girls but only about ¾ of the right hand side of the left girl’s face is visible and about ¾ of the left hand side of the right girl’s face is visible. The girl on the left starts off looking up to the left but then quickly darts her eyes downward towards her hands. Now her mouth is open slightly gritting her teeth. The girl on the rights cheeks are puffed up a little bit and it almost looks like she has a stomachache and is about to throw up as she blinks and looks around the room. From this frame we can see that the girl on the left has brown eyes, the man in the middle with the turtleneck has what looks to be gray-ish eyes but I might just be in bad lighting, and the girl on the right has blue eyes. The man once again states something and the two girls don’t take any notice of it.
0:08 ~ 0:09 – An entirely new scene appears. There is a hot tub in the middle of the room with the jets going as we see the bubbles at the top of the water. On the left side of the room is some sort of house plant which seems to go wherever it wants and is growing all different ways. It is leaning much more towards the right side. In the back of the room is a window with half closed blinds and a windowsill. In front of the open portion of the window on the left of the windowsill are two exotic looking shells from some sea creatures next to each other. One is vertical and you can see the full length of it and the other is only showing us the front of it. To the right of those shells on the ride side of the open window and still on the windowsill are three varying sizes of succulents. They look like mini cactuses arranged from left to right by size of medium, small, and then large. All the way to the right is what looks like it could be some sort of highly decorative piece, maybe a lamp or a vase. It has a design on it like squiggly lines on top of each other. It seems like there is a set of red tinted lights out of sight but we can see the light created from them behind the hot tub on all sides. Closest to us are the faucets for the hot tub. There are two faucets each with two knobs. Both faucets are next to each other outside on the edge of the hot tub closest to us in the camera view. There are two men sitting in the hot tub, both shirtless. One african american man, maybe around 20 years old, and short afro-like hair, is sitting on the back left hand side of the hot tub with both arms up on the edges of the hot tub with hands dangling into the water. The other person is around the same age as the man on the left but this man is caucasian with red hair (ginger not actually red). He is also shirtless with his arms up on the edges of the hot tub like the man on the left. This man is sitting on the far right hand corner of the hot tub. Neither of the men are looking at each other or speaking. They are both focused on something on the left side of the screen but they do not seem to be very interested in it based on their facial expressions. Either that, or they are just blankly staring off towards the left hand side of the scene. In the space between the two men, the man in the turtleneck appears from the water while still wearing the turtleneck. He slowly slides up from the water to reveal his face soaking wet obviously as he had just come from the water. At this point we can infer that this man is supposed to represent something for certain. He has only appeared so far between two pairs of people in what seems like very quiet or even silent rooms and nobody takes notice of him.
0:10 ~ 0:11 – Now we have moved to an entirely new scene. It looks to be a high school gym locker room bathroom. We can assume this based on the two people in the bathroom using the urinals. They are bigger kids with typical football gear on and jerseys that have numbers on them. The person on the left has number 65 on the back of his jersey and the one on the right has the number 77. I am assuming this is high school because there are no names on the back of the jerseys and to my knowledge there are names of either the school or the player on the back of college football jerseys. The ones these people are wearing seem too plain to be college football players. There are 8 urinals in the room, or that is as many as we can see, placed evenly between each other in the camera’s field of view. The kid with jersey number 65 is using urinal number 4 from the left, and the kid with jersey number 77 is using urinal number 5 from the left. These are the urinals placed directly in the middle of the camera view. In between the two people is the man in the turtleneck. He is facing towards the man in the 77 jersey and we can see now he is wearing light brown jeans and a dark brown or black belt. His arms are by his sides and he is standing up straight. He starts off looking directly at the man on the right but turns his head gradually to look at the camera and smiling. Once he is looking fully at the camera, the scene switches once again. Now the camera is focused on a bed from the top angle. There are two people in the bed. On the fully left hand side is a boy about 18-20 years old by the looks of it, wearing nothing that we can see in our immediate view. His upper body is exposed from about his torso upwards. A blanket sprawled across the entire bed covers the region slightly above his belly button and below we presume but we can only see his upper half. He has dark brown messy hair and what looks like brown eyes. He is laying his head on a large white pillow and looking immediately to his left (our right). What he is looking at is the girl on the other side of the bed. An african american girl with medium length curly black hair down to about a little past her shoulders. She, as well, does not seem to be wearing any clothing and the blanket is also sprawled across her chest but is higher up on her body than it was on the man. She is holding her arm outside the blanket and pressing it up against her upper chest to not expose herself as the man is. She is, as well, lying on a different pillow then the man but is of very similar variety. She is looking back at the man with a facial expression like she is stunned by what she has seen and doesn’t know what to say. The man has the same facial expression as the woman. Both of them then turn their eyes to look away from each other, the man looks to the left and the woman looks to the right (their right and left respectively). Both still have not made any notion that they are going to speak and just sit there seemingly astonished or maybe even slightly scared you may think. All while this is happening, the man in the turtle neck is laying in between the two. He is slightly lower on the bed compared to the man and woman and is laying in between the two pillows that the other two people accompanying him are using. Only his shoulders and above are visible but you can still see that he is wearing the turtleneck. He has a very straight face. Neither of the other people in the bed acknowledge him at any point.
0:12 ~ 0:14 – We are now back on the scene of the men in the hot tub but this time the camera is zoomed in much more to only show the turtleneck man’s head coming out of the water. To his left and right you can see half of the bodies of the two other men that were in the hot tub with him before. By the looks of it neither of the two of them are looking at each other still or talking and both are looking directly forward seemingly at nothing maybe and just thinking. The turtleneck man, still between the two other men, has his head completely soaked as we can presume he just came out of the hot tub as we saw in the earlier scene. The turtleneck man then states something.
0:15 ~ 0:16 – Now we once again go back to the scene at the beginning with the two girls on the couch. The camera is again focused like it was for the last scene. The turtleneck man is the main focus of this scene and you can see half of each of the girls bodies on either side of him. Both of the girls still look quite sad or uneasy and are still looking blankly forwards and down. The turtleneck man is again back in the center of the couch with only his upper chest and above visible in the camera view. His hair is no longer wet from the scene in the hot tub and is once again back to what it was in the original scene he appeared in. He points to the right, at the girl in the overalls still sitting quietly, and says something. Possibly, this girl on the right is going to do something or maybe the girl on the left will do something to her.
0:17 ~ 0:18 – The camera angle has backed up since the last scene and we can now see the full bodies of those on the couch. But now, the turtleneck man is not there. The room is still the same as it was in the first scene and the expressions on the two girls are still the same. The girl on the right still has her legs crossed even. She begins to look at the girl on the left and opens her mouth and sort of takes a deep breath and then proceeds to look down at her hands. All the while, the girl on the left looks just as she did in the first few scenes and is still looking down at her hands and messing around with them.
0:19 ~ 0:20 – The camera is now entirely focused on the right girl from a side angle. The angle looks as if we are sitting right in front of the two on a different couch and looking at the girl on the right. The background behind the girl is completely blurred but everything in the immediate scene such as the girl and the couch, are clear as day. She begins to speak and is looking directly at the girl sitting across from her as we presume because she is very focused on the left side of the couch. She looks very worried so we can assume that something may not be fine with the girl across from her. Now thinking, this is the first time someone has spoken, and the turtleneck man is no longer in the scene or anywhere that we are aware of. Maybe he represents some sort of awkward situation or silence and now that the girl on the right has spoken, he has no reason to be there.
0:21 ~ 0:23 – The camera angle changes from the right to the left and is now focused on the girl sitting on the left side of the couch. Again the background is blurred and all the focus is on the girl and the couch. The girl on the left is looking at the person across from her, seeming to be listening. She then shakes her head to respond to whatever question or comment the other girl has made. Her head then turns to look downwards again and she starts to mess around with her hands again. The camera switches back to the right side and the girl state’s something once again. She still looks very worrisome.
0:24 – The camera view switches entirely and now the turtleneck man is once again back and the entire focus of the scene. He is sitting in a chair of the same style as the others in the room the two girls were in and it is also presumed that he is in the basement based on this fact and all the other items surrounding him. On the left hand side of the room we can see a dresser, but only the right half of it, with a decorative lamp, several books and a ceramic duck on top of it. There is also another item on the dresser but I am not too sure what it is, maybe some piece of artwork that sort of looks like an embroidered egg on display. Behind the man is a picture of a dog standing next to some duckweed in front of a pond with a duck flying over the dog’s head. In the back right of the room there is an aquarium with a blue tinted light and an area that looks like it holds what look to be records but no record player to be seen. Above the aquarium is a landscape picture of what looks like the side of a mountain and some body of water next to it. Right next to the man on the right is a small arm table with another ceramic duck or other bird piece as well as a small ceramic white unicorn. The man in the seat has his left leg crossed over top of his right leg and we can now see he is wearing neat, white sneakers with shoelaces tied nicely. The man is holding two thumbs up in a way of approval to show that whatever the girl must have said was a good thing. He is making a face like he is impressed and gives a small nod then puts both thumbs down.
0:25 ~ 0:30 – This is the end of the advertisement and where all the links to the companies and informatory pieces happen. On the screen is yellow text stating “Find out how you can help a friend with their mental health at SeizeTheAwkward.org” and the website link is underlined. Under this quote is an area for different logos for I would have to presume mental health awareness organizations based off the ad. These logos are for Ad Council, who were the people behind this ad, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and JED. The main focus of the scene is the text but we can still see the background even though it is blurred. The background is the scene with the two girls, and they are now actively talking to each other with the girl on the right having her full body turned completely towards the other girl with one leg up on the couch. The girl on the left is now smiling as the two are. The girl on the right seems happy as well based on her expression in which she looks content as well with a little smile. A second rectangular text box looking object now replaces the previous lines of text and in it says “SEIZE THE AWKWARD” in all capital letters. The words “SEIZE THE” move away from the word “AWKWARD” in the text box to create a space between them confirming that the turtleneck man represented an awkward situation or an awkward silence which these two girls broke and seemed to resolve their issue or make a step towards the right direction to some degree.
0:00-0:01 The video begins with a low-angle camera shot of a gray SUV parked in the driveway, of what seems to be, an average suburban house because there are trees surrounding the house meaning it is most likely not in the city. The property itself seems to be well kept but not completely perfect, with some stains on the siding of the house and leaves on the roof, again to convey the feeling of an average suburban house. There is also a basketball net in the driveway which likely means the family living there has children. The branding is removed from the car most likely to help give the impression that this is not an advertisement for a vehicle company. Also, the background of the license plate on the car is blacked out, giving a sense of universality as at a first glance, one would not be able to tell specifically where in the world the advertisement is set. The two front doors as well as the back left door of the car start off as open, but are then shut by the end of the first second to show that multiple people have entered the car, presumably the family that lives there with the parents in the front and the children in the back. This 1 second from the beginning of the video appeals to the pathos of the viewer by setting up a relatable scene to most people.
0:01-0:04 The camera now transitions to the inside of the car where three kids are seen in the back of the vehicle, one in the very back row of seats and two in the middle row of seats. Based on the fact that only the driver side back door was seen closing at the start of the video, it can be assumed that the child in the very back row as well as the one in the passenger side back seat were already in the vehicle at the very start of the video. The camera starts off focused on two boys in the middle row of seats who appear to be maybe 10-13 years old. The boy on the right is seen to be wearing a blue t-shirt with a soccer ball on it, while the boy on the left is wearing a gray t-shirt shirt with two blue rings on each sleeve. It can be assumed that the two boys are into sports, but maybe not a specific sport as they have a basketball net in their driveway but are seen wearing a soccer shirt. Based on their facial expressions, the two boys seem to be screaming at each other while fighting over something in their hands that cannot yet be seen, tugging it back and forth. Since this tug of war between the two boys started happening the instant the boy on the right entered the vehicle, it can be presumed that the boy entered the vehicle holding something that triggered an immediate battle to own whatever it is. The camera now pans to a girl in the back row of seats who is presumably the older sister of the two boys. She is wearing pink headphones with which once again, no branding, while listening to music, indicated by her dance-like motions. Appearances wise, the children all have relatively dark skin and hair, and look to be maybe of Asian or Middle Eastern descent. This gives the advertisement a feeling of diversity, possibly to help appeal to more people. The children also look like they are well cared for healthy kids. This again appeals to the pathos of the viewer showing a relatable normal family with a familiar scene of kids fighting in the car.
0:04-0:05 The camera transitions to a middle aged man who is sitting in the driver’s seat of the car. He looks to be the same ethnicity as the children, making it reasonable to assume that he is their father. He is wearing a plaid, collared shirt with a white undershirt, indicative of casual “going out” attire. The man is seen staring straight ahead with lips pressed together, nostrils flared, and a facial expression that looks like he knows what is going on in the backseat but is trying his best to ignore it.
0:06-0:08 The camera now transitions back to the girl in the backseat who is blowing a big bubble of gum that looks like it is about to burst. It then pans over to the boys who are continuing to scream at each other while fighting over something, still not yet seen, in their hands. This scene is likely created to show how loud the inside of the car must be with the bubble of gum about to burst and the boys screaming. This once again appeals to pathos, creating the scene of a noisy car that most families with more than 1 child can relate to.
0:08-0:14 The camera now transitions, for the first time, to the front passenger seat of the car where you can see a middle aged woman wearing glasses, presumably the mother of the family. This woman has dark hair just like the rest of the people in the car, but has more of a pale skin tone, possibly indicating a different ethnicity. This again gives off the feeling of diversity in the advertisement. She is seen looking up into the rearview mirror, looking back at the kids in the back seats of the car. You can see her start to open her mouth and based on her facial expression, it seems as if she is about to yell at the kids for misbehaving. You can then also see the father look back at the kids through the rearview mirror as if to see their reaction to what the mother is about to say. The camera now focuses on the girl who’s gum bubble finally pops. At the same time the bubble pops, the camera pans out to the boys where it is revealed that the object they were fighting over was a bag of cheese puffs that now explodes all over the car due to them tugging it back and forth.
0:14-0:19 With cheese puffs still flying through the air, some even making their way up to the driver and passenger seats, the camera transitions to the dad’s face. He is once again staring straight forward looking like he is waiting for something to happen with a face that says, “can you please just stop already.” The camera now shows the two boys continuing to yell at each other with the mother in the foreground starting to say something. The two boys immediately stop arguing and look at their mother whose lips can be made out to be saying “now” with a stern look on her face.
0:19-0:22 The camera transitions to the kids in the back seat who all have the look of someone who just got scolded. They all can be seen to immediately reach for their seatbelts and plug them in. From this it can be inferred that the mother was telling them to “put their seatbelts on now.” This again appeals to pathos as we all can relate to the emotions felt when being yelled at by our parents.
0:22-0:25 The camera now transitions to the dad who is now looking back at the kids. After now having watched the kids buckle up, he gives a little smile followed by a sigh of relief showing his deep gratitude to his “wife” for playing the bad guy and getting the kids to finally buckle up. As all of that happens, the “mom” can be seen brushing a cheese puff off her shoulder with an annoyed look on her face. The “dad” then looks forward and puts his hand on the steering wheel showing that he is now ready to drive away. It is also worth noting that there is a wedding band seen on his hand on the steering wheel, further adding to the assumption that the two in the front seat are “mom” and “dad.” This too appeals to the pathos of the viewers as it conveys the relatable value of the importance of seatbelts as the father waited for his kids to buckle up before pulling out of the driveway.
0:26-0:30 The remainder of the video shows the car pulling out of the driveway into the street of what is now confirmed, a suburban neighborhood. The car is seen pulling into the right hand side of the road which along with all the other visuals described so far, makes it seem like the advertisement takes place somewhere in the United States. As the car starts pulling away a logo for the NHTSA, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, appears on screen along with a little slogan that reads, “Never give up until they buckle up.” This now reveals that the ad was about safe driving habits, sending the message to make sure everyone is buckled up before getting on the road. This final 4 seconds of the video appeals to ethos by showing the branding of the credible NHTSA.
We first see an African American man and what seems to be his daughter or someone to play the part of his daughter. I can tell that she is his daughter from the way that he is lifting her in the air. The little girl seems to be about 4 or 5 years old. She is wearing a yellow long-sleeve shirt, gray leggings, and sneakers. The father is wearing a white tee shirt and blue jeans. It looks like they are in some kind of video recording studio. The room is all white and the only contrast against the color is the father and his daughter. He is spinning his daughter around in the air. He is holding her under her armpits. They both seem to be very happy because they are smiling.A black microphone makes its way into the scene through the first 5 seconds. At this point we realize that this video is completely staged. We have to wonder if this really his daughter. We wonder many things like does he act like this in real life, or is he just following the stage directions? A bit of text pops up on the screen that shows the man’s name and profession “Keenan Allen. Wide Receiver, Los Angeles Chargers.” At this point I begin to wonder what the point of this video is and why they chose Keenan Allen to be in this video. Is it to show that if even a busy man like Keenan Allen has time to spend with his daughter, you should too?
0:06-0:10
The scene switches to Keenan Allen and a little boy. The boy is very young, maybe about a year old. The little boy is wearing a blue shirt with light khaki shorts and no shoes. Keenan is holding this little boy. Based on the way that he is holding him very closely and bouncing him around, I am going to draw the conclusion that this is his son. Keenan was dancing with his son and they both seemed to be pretty content. Keenan was smiling while his son was making what I would consider to be happy baby faces, not crying. The baby also looks to be very comfortable with Keenan, which also leads me to believe that Keenan is his father and they have a good relationship.
0:11-0:13
The scene switches to just Keenan’s fingers playing piano and some of his torso. I can tell that it is Keenan still based off of the clothes he is wearing and the tattoos on his arms. He seems to be pretty good at playing piano. His fingers look like they are all hitting the right notes, but I am not too sure because I have the video muted. I see a blur of someone or something to his left side. I see yellow so I am wondering if it is his daughter. I wonder if he is playing piano for his kids or to display his talents/interests?
0:14-0:16
The frame pans out and now we can see that Keenan is playing for his kids. He has one daughter on one side of him, leaned up against him. She is wearing a gray short sleeve shirt. She seems to be about 2 or 3 years old. I cannot tell her emotion too well because I don’t really see her face, but she seems to be content. I can also see the blur of someone else right next to them. I am assuming that the other person is his son. All three of them are sitting on the bench next to the piano. His other daughter in yellow is playing on her drum set. The drum set is clearly child sized because it is perfect size for his daughter. She seems to be very excited based on the way that she is banging on the drums. It looks like they have their own mini family band formed. We also now have a fuller view of the piano. It is made out of wood and it is painted either dark brown or black. The back of the piano is open and the wood is unpainted. We can also now see that Keenan has blue sneakers on.
0:17-0:19
The next scene is of the inner workings of the piano while someone (probably still Kennan) is playing it. There is a great contrast between the light colored inner workings of the piano and the dark colored outside. The piano is shiny and you can see some form of reflection on it. This is a truly beautiful scene, maybe trying to represent the beauty in the relationship between Keenan and his children or maybe just trying to take up time in the video to make more money on YouTube. If they were trying t represent the beauty it would be through all of the parts of the piano working together to make a beautiful sound, like how Keenan and his family together is beautiful.
0:20-0:26
The last bit of the scene with Allen is him and his daughter dancing. She is on the standing on the floor and he is holding her hands. They are jumping around and dancing. They still look very happy. As they were dancing, the director’s clapperboard moves into the scene as the director shuts it to signify the end of the scene. When the focus was on the clapperboard, Keenan and his daughter dancing in the background became blurry, but for the last couple seconds of the scene, the dancing became clear again when the clapperboard exited the scene. At this point we are once again reminded that this entire interaction was staged. Although the relationship between Keenan and his “children” seemed to be genuine, we can never really know the truth because we know that the whole video was staged. Is he really like that in real life, or is it just for the video?
0:27-0:37
The last bit of the clip shows a black screen with “Make a Moment” and “#DanceLikeADad.” It is now made clear that the point of the video is father involvement in the life of their children. They want fathers to spend time with their children. The director used a lot of ethos and pathos to get their point across. The director used ethos by getting Keenan Allen to be in the video and promote the concept of fatherhood involvement. Many people view Keenan Allen as a role model and would take the message to heart if they heard it from Keenan Allen. Pathos was also widely used because display of emotion was apparent all throughout the video. The smiling and laughing displays the idea that if you spend time with your kids, maybe you would be happy too. At the bottom of the screen there is a link to a website fatherhood.gov and when I looked it up, it seems to be a bunch of resources on how to be a better father. Also on the bottom of the screen there are a list of logos which could have either been involved with the production the video or are just sponsors.
After watching the entirety of this video, I have come to the conclusion that it was ineffective at conveying the message. We are left to wonder if the interactions between Keenan and his children, if they really even are his children, are genuine. Especially from seeing the microphone and the clapperboard come in the scene, I get the reminder that all of this could simply be staged. I could be led to believe something that is not reality. Although the video seemed to be upbeat and positive, I don’t think that this was the best way to convey their message. Maybe if they made a video of recording fathers and daughters out in public and had a message saying something like “these are all true interactions” it would have been more effective. If I were able to evaluate the sound behind the video, I may have a different feeling about it, but the video alone does not make a strong enough argument.
Cultural appropriation has become an issue within the music industry that has arisen in discussions among music artists and producers. As the concept continues to be spoken in relation to Korean pop artists taking Black artists’ music and making it their own without understanding the cultural association of the lyrics, dance, apparel, and racial background, the idea that it is one-sided has come to be questioned. Many would argue that when someone is supposedly appropriating particular concepts to a specific culture, it should not always be considered controversial. People have noted that Black artists knowingly engage in songwriting for Korean artists to understand that they may be copying dancing styles, gestures, and racial experiences.
Western music artists, especially Black artists, have become familiar with the concept and have actively stopped participating in writing music for Korean pop artists. Korean pop artists have suggested that Black music and the claim that their culture is being appropriated is a misunderstood concept. Some Korean artists have indicated that it is the producers that promote Black artists’ music and that the music career itself promotes the use of Black music as a point of sale. In addition, Korean pop artists have also indicated that they are not appropriating someone else’s music culture because they have used different genres and illustrate their appreciation for the culture.
Korean artists are producing pop music, which has been historically derived from western pop artists. Their music utilizes music elements obtained from multiple music genres. In particular, the primary genre used is pop music. Evidently, the majority of South Korea’s music artists have labeled their music under the Korean pop genre. One of the reasons indicated by Korean pop artists has indicated that the use of western pop music provides a greater chance of being recognized and increasing financial gain. Knowing that the audience of Korean pop music has expressed interest in western music, Korean pop artists use upbeat, rhythmic, soft, and catchy soundbites to gain appeal from many listeners. However, western music qualities used involve elements from black hip hop culture. The Korean artists imitate the style and dark theme often portrayed in Black western videos and music themes.
On the other hand, some staunch supporters claim that Korean artists continue to borrow with no attribution and respect for cultural norms deliberately. According to the author of the article, “Three Cheers for Cultural Appropriation,” Bari Weiss states that “few of us doubt that stealing is wrong, especially from the poor. The accusation of cultural appropriation is overwhelmingly being used as an objection to syncretism. The mixing of culture and thoughts and ethnicities often ends in the creation of new subsets of thoughts and culture. Thus, creating a melting pot.”
Despite Korean artists using a different music genre as their go-to for popularity, they still exploit black culture in their music videos and promotions as an aesthetic for their pop songs. They benefit significantly from dressing and acting like gangsters while actual Black hip hop artists struggle to be acknowledged for their work in the music industry. Black artists’ themes are being used to benefit another country, let alone media inspiration for racially different artists, yet do not receive credit for it. Bari Weiss also states that “the impulse is one of homage and not derision, borrowing should be encouraged. Culture should be shared, not hoarded.” Korean artists are continuing to steal from Black hip hop artists even without producing hip hop music. Hip hop artists’ culture is being shared with numerous other artists for these new, unique ideas; however, their credit and culture are being hoarded.
Korean artists are trying to become a commercial success since the music industry is still a business. When it comes to the topic of business, the top priority is financial gain in order to remain successful. Any industry would take advantage of any possible resource that could be useful to make a profit. The Korean music industry is no different from how they would try to adapt to popular trends for economic gains independent of cultural appropriation ramifications. According to the author of the article, “What is (the wrong of) cultural appropriation,” Patti Lenard states that “cultural appropriation can be defined as the taking of a valuable, yet reusable or non-exhaustible aspect, of another individual’s culture for one’s own use, where the taker knows what they are doing, and where the context of this taking is contested.”
The continuous barrage of arguments on both sides of the spectrum of cultural appropriation and its impact on fashion, media, and music will continue to have a significant impact on whether the value of attribution and political correctness outweighs the popularity and revenue that is afforded by western pop and hip hop influences. Patti Lenard also states that “cultural appropriation appears to be additionally defined by the existence of underlying power structures which support or permit those with more power to take from those with less.” One example that Patti Lenard used was Kylie Jenner wearing cornrows in an Instagram post. Kylie Jenner may not be wearing a predominantly Black hairstyle with the intent to exploit the culture; however, she is still receiving high praise and profits off of it. No matter what kind of intentions artists would have, their main objective is to make money at no cost, whether they are culturally appropriating or not.
Society tends to mistake what it means to appropriate culture, which brings debates about whether a celebrity is exploiting that culture or not. There is nothing wrong with opposing whether Korean artists are unethical with how they promote and produce their music. However, the lack of consideration for a culture that is oppressed should not be justified by a business standpoint or whether the hip hop genre was only used in songs. An artist should be successful without exploiting a different culture and showing respect towards it from behind the scenes. Nonetheless, artists continue to seek modes of increasing popularity and wealth regardless of political culture and social appropriateness.
In the first 5 seconds we see a man a very young girl playing with a ball on a beach. It looks to be a dad and his young daughter. It looks to be earlier in the morning before everyone gets to to the beach or later in the evening after everyone has left the beach for the day. It also looks to be colder since it’s early in the morning or later in the evening because the dad and the daughter look to be wearing some warmer clothing. The dad kicks the ball up in the air very lightly so that the daughter is able to catch it. However, he doesn’t seem to be very athletic because he kicked the ball up so the daughter could catch it but it doesn’t seem to go in the direction he wanted to. It seems very clear that the daughter is very happy. It also looks to be low tide as well because of where the sand is wet. The ball he brought is also a very light ball so the daughter doesn’t get hurt. Something like a soccer ball would be too heavy for the little girl.
0:06-0:10
It then shows another daughter playing with her father. They look to be in a backyard and he is going to check on her with the ball in her hand to make sure she’s okay. It then switches to another father and daughter playing catch in a kitchen. The daughter is wearing a blue oversized dress. It looks like something a princess would wear. It shows another dad throwing a small ball from a driveway and then switches frame to the daughter in the blue dress catching the small ball with no problem at all. It looks to be late evening from where the dad is in the driveway. The daughter inside looks to be around 3 or 4. The different daughters in these 4 seconds all look to be very young.
0:11-0:15
The video then cuts to another clip of a dad playing catch with his daughter. They are out front in what looks to be the late morning or early evening because you can see that the sun is either going down or coming up. The daughter is wearing a purple ballet outfit. They look to be out in the front yard playing catch with a ball that’s almost like a balloon because of how slow it moves in the air. It then switches to another daughter in the middle of a field kicking a soccer ball around. There isn’t a dad in this shot though but some people could assume he may just not be in the shot or maybe even behind the camera. It looks to be late afternoon as well because it looks like the sun is starting to go down. It doesn’t look to be that cold because the daughter is in shorts but high socks and has a light hoodie on. It then cuts to a dad and his daughter hitting a volley ball back and forth to each other. This daughter is a little older than the previous daughters. She looks to be a teenager. They look to be out in the driveway in the very late evening. It’s still pretty dark but you see the light in the sky which means the sun looks to have just gone down for the day. The dad and the daughter are both in shorts so it looks to be the summer time. It looks like they live pretty far off the road because the driveway is so long.
0:16-0:20
It then cuts to a daughter by the pool and jumping in while trying to catch a ball. This looks to be a smaller ball, probably a water ball meant for the pool. The dad most likely is just out of frame throwing the ball to his daughter. She is another older girl. Looks to be in her teen years as well. After she catches the ball in midair and jumps in, it cuts to a shot of her in the pool very happy that she caught the ball. It then cuts to another daughter pitching to her dad. She looks to be a pitcher for a softball team. The daughter looks to have softball pants on and a regular shirt and the dad has on some shorts and a t shirt. He also looks to be wearing catcher pads on the lower part of his legs to protect himself. He points at her and says something after she pitches, most likely trying to help her become a better pitcher.
0:21-0:25
In the final clip it shows an older dad throwing a football pretty far to a younger girl. This looks like a grandfather most likely throwing to his granddaughter. They are in a neighborhood most likely outside their house after dark. They are both wearing shorts and short sleeve t shirts which means it’s probably the summer time. It looks to be very late evening because you can still see a little bit of light in the sky from the sun just going down. The girl looks to be about 10 or 11; a little younger than the girls in the previous clips it seems like. She has red curly hair and has a short sleeve striped shirt on. This game of catch looks to be just for fun unlike the girl in the previous clip training for softball.
0:26-0:30
Finally in the last five seconds, it states that “It only takes a moment to make a moment” which seems to be the directors point of this video. Each of these clips all throughout the video have shown fathers or father figures taking time to spend with their daughters. Some of them just going and having a fun game of catch with them and some of them trying to help their daughters get better at their sport like softball and volley ball. This commercial is supposed to demonstrate that fathers should always take some time to spend with their children and make sure they get that one on one time. The director shows that this is a really important aspect of father hood and it should always be something fathers look to do with their children.
If a primary caretaker has a negative attitude toward their child, it increases the risk that their child will grow up hostile towards others. And it’s not just aggression toward others that results from child abuse; many children raised by abusive parents also harm themselves. This malicious behavior is because the children don’t learn appropriate techniques for handling life’s disappointments. If you aren’t raised with coping skills, you are likely to act ‘inappropriately’ if you have developed more reasonable approaches. As reported by Dr. Geoffrey Dahmer in “The Bully Papers, ” the effect of poor parenting is that everyone gets the child they deserve.
As the most powerful and prominent military force and authority on the Planet, many would be surprised if they heard that the United States is in fact one of the most vulnerable nations on Earth to a very specific kind of attack. That is, an Electromagnetic pulse to wholly cripple the power grid, all electronic devices, and everything else in between which depends on the flow of electricity – one of those being the U.S. economy. There are many factors to consider when contemplating or modelling the likelihood and motivation for an EMP attack. While many would agree direct attacks such as nuclear approach impossibility in their likelihood, an EMP attack is actually a less-direct attack that would in fact disarm the United States from an adequate and defensive response due to the digital nature of our integrated defense systems at present, and is therefore a highly plausible and very possible situation.
It is already well established that America does not have proper preparation for an EMP attack which could disable national electronic and digital devices, of which everything essential running the American system is dependent upon. There also currently exist a plethora of fresh threats to American sovereignty, such as Iran, Russia, and China, among many. Such nations which do posses nuclear weapons thereby may utilize them as EMP’s against America. Many will claim that nuclear attacks against the major nation America is simply not in the realm of possibility. However, the only seed necessary for the possibility to exist is negative dispositions and views of America held by hostile individuals and nations, which we certainly know exist in abundance.
The classic argument of mutual self-destruction due to nuclear weapons usage does not apply to the situation of a potential EMP strike on America. An EMP is not a direct attack such as a warhead is. An EMP is a weapon in that it drastically changes the electromagnetic field over America. While no physical damage will occur, the induced drastic alteration of the EM field over America will instantly disable all electronic devices. The plausibility of such an EMP attack is further supported by the fact that with a fast enough EMP strike, American defensive maneuvers and systems will not be able to function as they are electrically operated as well supplied by an outdated power grid.
As discussed, it is clear that anyone can establish a basis for desiring damage to America, such as the case with hostile powers. Suppose such an actor desired to harm America and find a clever and robust manner in which to accomplish this goal, maximizing damage and leverage while minimizing damage and cost to himself. It is therefore much more logically preferable to disable every mechanism of retaliation and defense (of America), which would also harm all major supply and food lines along with the economy, and to engage in a more direct warfare or attack after said defense capabilities are rendered null. The alternative by definition can only involve confrontation and therefore retaliation. For such actors that wish to cause harm to America, the EMP option is real, smoother, and superior. For the discussed reasons, the threat of retaliation from the U.S. is thereby little danger to a hostile actor. It is certainly true that such an EMP attack has never been attempted on such a large nation. However, this can be due to a variety of factors like globalization, lack of speed in EMP missiles (which may simply be nuclear warheads), and simply lack of necessary tension in order to rigger such a chain of events. Yet we know from history that global tension ebbs and flows like the ocean waves, sometimes violently and spectacularly. A ‘decision tree’ in which one follows through with an EMP has been identified and certainly exists, as our government fears. The vulnerability is recognized and is real by our own government (specifically the Trump administration). The deep and doomsday consequences of an EMP attack are real as described by the laws of physics. The U.S. is therefore not in a high and mighty position and safe or protected as some may boldly, and incorrectly, claim. The U.S. is more akin to a sitting duck. Or more descriptively, like the slow and lazy antelope wading in the obscure and fuzzy field of a looming pounce from a deadly and patient predator.
So no, America is not safe from anything, as everything depends on electricity and our grid. For fast EMP’s which rival nations do have, defense systems would not be able to respond adequately or fast enough. Our retaliation measures would be nonexistent. Every such event in the decision tree of an American downfall and catastrophe has a much greater than zero probability even though others may naively ignore it or claim otherwise. It is merely a matter of seizing the opportunity and time though some may choose to not see.
Money seems to have a big role in our society; you can’t do much or get far if you don’t have any. Money is valuable in different ways, even when you don’t see it physically. In today’s society you must have faith in the government and in the banking system that your money is being handled in the proper manner; if not, then you would have to hide all of your money under your mattress or around your house. I have no clue what happens in the banks, or how they take care of your money. I always thought money was simple; you either have some or you don’t—that’s it. However, being introduced to this assignment, the Yap Fei, US gold, French francs, Brazilian cruzeros, and debit accounts now seem similar. You don’t actually see your money being transferred. When you get paid, you aren’t handed cash, you don’t receive a physical check, the money’s all directly transferred to your bank account, and you just have to trust that you got more money.
New Paragraph
Money is such an important tool that we use every day in our world. Everything we buy required money from food to games we need money to purchase these items. People believe that having faith in our government banking system is good because they hold our money help with our credit so we can continue buying what we need. I know that most of don’t fully know-how are money is handled by our banks, but being introduced to currency the Yap Fei, US gold, French francs, Brazilian cruzeros, and debit accounts now seem similar. We never actually see our money getting transferred though and also where it comes from.
The ad starts off with a cartoon man that has a yellow shirt with a mustace opening a door and since theres a dining room table and a door bell we can assume thats his house. We can assume it is his wife and child since the stick figures in the back have one tall one and one that’s a little smaller pointing out a size difference. We can see his facial expression change quite fast and it seems to surprise him at the door.
3-5 The camera cuts to a cartoon Wildfire that has angry eyes Rolling and burning down his neighborhood when the man opens the door. The next scene the man opens the door again and this time a angry flash flood is rampaging through his neighborhood. The third time the man opens up the door a massive earthquake seems to be Breaking apart the road in front of the house and messing up his fence which leads us to believe the house could be next and his family could be in danger.
6-9 seconds
The dad or man seems to remain calm even with the natural disasters potentially destroying his home. He calmly puts his hand up and shut the door slowly. While the earthquake seems to still be ravaging through the neighborhood once he puts his hand up it all stops. The earthquake doesnt seem to be mad and its eyes kinda look upset. Once he has the ability to shut the door completely environment goes quiet and everything goes back to the way it once was.
10 seconds- What we can presume to be dad is sitting at the kitchen table with his daughter in the middle because of her young looking age. What looks like his mother is sitting next to his daughter. I think its his mother because of her grey hair with glasses. They seem to be looking at a computer screen with a bunch of survival Necessities on the table. a few of them include a first aid kit, a map, a flashlight, a cell phone, a charger for that cell phone and food.
11-12 Seconds- It shows the computer mouse hovering over a website The websiteThat the family clicked on is ready.gov/plan
13-15- We can assume that they clicked on the ready.gov/plan website and it loaded to a government website. Staying home saves lives is the main banner up on this website. it also has a smaller gray box with a tab to learn more which we can presume is about the covid-19 virus. There’s two more mini banners on this website. alerts is one of them which we can presume you will alert that could possibly save your life in the event of a natural disaster / pandemic. The other is a toolkit which could help you plan out in case of natural disaster / pandemic that is affecting your current situation.
16-18 The camera instantly pants back to the family at the kitchen table with all the supplies on the table. The family looks prepared and confident after having access to this website. Then we see that there’s an apparent knock on the door by the lines coming out by the door on a consistent basis as a knock.
18-21 They set up a communication plan For the little girl with three names on it. The dad happens to be first on the calling list. The other is the grandmother from earlier, followed by an out-of-state number just in case she gets separated from both of them and they don’t have access to their phone. They zip up an emergency bag and head towards the door as they are confident and prepared to face anything coming their way. They go over to the door and finally start to open it.
22-25 -We see the person who opens the door isn’t a natural disaster it is a pizza guy but he’s wearing his mask to prevent the family from being exposed to the covid-19 virus while also preventing himself from getting the virus. The dad looks relieved to see it just the pizza man, why the daughter seems really excited that she’s getting pizza. the entire family is wearing a mask as well to prevent them from getting the covid virus 19.
25-30 seconds
The last bit of it is more just telling you to make a plan again and stressing how important it is and where to go so you can make that plan. It gives the website information again, plus States what other organizations back it. So at this point you know it’s an ad and why It is important.
