Visual Rhetoric Rewrite – BabyGoat

0:00 – 0:01 – The film starts off with a small wood table that has a cup filled with pens and a clear cup on top. The environment around the table seems to look like a messy living room. Partially under the left side of the table there is a green stuffed dinosaur with its back to the screen. To the right of the table we have a blue foam football and a jar of bugs. More towards the middle but still to the right, we can see a pair of blue shoes, which are flipped around. And on the far right of the screen we can see a window with white curtains that are open. In the far back of the setting, we can see some sort of artificial light that illuminates over a gray chair and footrest combination. This may imply that it is very early in the day or becoming night time. To the left of the screen we can see the family’s TV, which sits on a shelf with many miscellaneous items. These items include vases, which are on the side, and books and movies, which are centered at the bottom. In front of the shelf, we can see tan and green pillows which are flipped around like the shoes. And in front of the pillows we can see a wooden coffee table that has a white top, which sits on top of a red patterned rug.

0:02-0:03 – As the camera pans to the left of the setting, we see a man on the ground, in what seems like a push up position. The male seems to be Caucasian with a beard and well maintained hair. He is wearing a dark shirt.

0:03-0:04 – The camera continues to pan to the left of the setting, but this time the man launches into the air. He takes the left side of the screen. We see the words “Looking to entertain the kids?” As the words pop up, the man lands on his chest without using his arms to brace the fall. At this point, we can see more of the middle of the living room. We can now clearly see the little white lamp that illuminated the gray chair on the right side of the screen. And we also see a new lamp, which has a clear base, and earthy tan lamp shade.

0:05 – 0:06 – We can now see that the man is doing the worm dance. He has on a maroon shirt with deep blue jeans. But now, he is in the middle of the screen, as we are introduced to a child in a yellow shirt with white stripes. The child looks to also be Caucasian in the higher elementary grades. The boy seems to be following the adult’s actions, as the words disappear off the screen. Both people seem to have focused faces. We can now predict that the messy living room was a result of the two having fun.

0:07 – 0:10 – The camera continues to pan left, with only the legs of the adult visible and the whole body of the child in the frame. With both people doing the worm, on the screen pops up “Show ‘em your best moves.” To the far left of the screen we can see a gray wall with pictures and a dog that looks bored laying with its head down. The dog has long brown ears and a white snout.

0:11 – 0:15 – There are no humans in sight with the camera now zoomed and focused on the dog. The dog is now raising its head with its nose pointing out. Its big droopy ears are still down, but it seems interested in the behavior of the humans.

0:16 – 0:18 – The camera is back in the wide view and everything seems to be in reverse. The camera is now panning to the right. The dog puts his head back down. We are now met with the boy doing the worm, he is in the same direction, but going backwards instead of forwards. As the boy takes up the whole screen, there is no sign of the adult, but the scenery still looks the same as before

0:19 – 0:22 – Since the camera is still moving right, the legs of the child are now off screen. He now takes up only the left side of the screen, but the adult’s legs now enter the frame from the right of the screen. He too is doing the reverse worm. And a new sentence pops up on screen, “And then show us!”

0:23 – 0:26  The child is now out of the frame, while both continue the worm. The adult looks back at him every time the adult hit the ground with his chest. This gesture seems to show that the adult figure is checking on the little one. With the camera continuing the movement to the right, the adult is also getting close to being out of frame.

0:27 – 0:30 – The camera continues to pan to the starting point and the adult is now out of frame, but we see “#DanceLikeaDad,” as the video comes to an end. This last part confirms that the adult is the father of the child. We also see many logos and the fatherhood.gov website.

The video starts off like a disaster to the viewer, but as the video progresses the sense of tension is immediately released.

00:00-00:02

In the first second of the video you see a beaten-up van pull into the driveway. The van is blue, has a tree through the back window, broken taillights, a mirror that is falling off, multiple dents and many scratches throughout the whole body.  The house the van is pulling into is a dark brown home, with white shutters. It seems as though it has been taken well care of by the looks of the fresh cut lawn and the flowers in planter boxes. We also see a woman standing in the front lawn with a watering can, watering a flowerpot. When further investigated though, you can see that the woman is watering a dead plant. This seems like an odd interaction and sends the subtle hint that the house actually isn’t in the best shape as it first appears to be. The trees are bare and there is wreath hanging outside telling viewers its late fall and could be around the holidays. As the van pulls in farther the woman looks up, implying she must know the person pulling in. So far, we cannot get a feel what the intended message is or what it is appealing to, but it could ethos to build trust with the audience that this is a normal household.

00:03-00:04

During this scene when the van has finally pulled into the driveway and parked, a woman with dark hair steps out. Now we can see the front of the van as well and it looks like it has been into a bad accident due to the hood of the car being bent upward and barley holding on. As the girl steps out of the car we cannot see her face, only her grey boots stepping down onto the concrete driveway and jean jacket. The blonde woman who was once watering the flowerpot has her back to the camera facing the dark-haired young woman.

00:04-00:05

In this scene we see the blonde woman is a little older, you can tell by her the wrinkles in her face. She stands with one hand on her hip which could be intended to show she is annoyed. Again, we know it is winter since she is wearing two warm fuzzy jackets. The blonde older woman looks at the brunette younger woman (who could very well be her daughter based on the age gap) as if she has something important to say.

00:06-00:09

The camera pans back to the brunette who then gets out of the car letting the door slam fast and hard. The blonde woman stays facing her and raises a hand as if she is saying something to her. At this point the brunette girl faces her and stops in her tracks looking concerned by the way her eyebrows are raised. The shot zooms all the way closer on the brunette girl, who we are for sure now assuming is the daughter based on all the body language. She points to a scratch on the car and shakes her head back and forth as if she is saying no to whatever question was asked about the scratch. The daughter seems to pay no attention and shrug at the fact the van has shrubbery protruding from the back, among all of the other scratches on the vehicle. This scene points to the fact that this kind of thing must happen often by the way the reaction is coming off. Now that the audience has seen both people, you can see the clothes they are dressed in is modern and new, along with their hair and makeup being kept up. From this we can gather they are a pretty average suburban family. The only thing that still doesn’t make sense is why they would own such a trashed, beat up car. This would appeal to pathos because it is a middle-class American family that looks relatable.

00:10-00:11

The camera flips back over to the blonde mother figure who still holds her hand on her hip. She has a look of disappointment with a slight frown in her eyes and lips. She appears to be asking another question. The background is blurred out, so we know the focus is supposed to be solely on her and what she is saying.

00:11-00:12

The camera then flips again back over to the brunette daughter. She is still pointing at the scratch on the blue car, this time though she starts to move back and forth in place like she is contemplating something. When she responds to the question she looks back at her mother and then places her eyes toward the ground which gives off a look of disappointment. The creator’s purpose could have been pathos in order to bring emotion to the scene.

00:12-00:13

As this scene starts, the camera angle switches to the front of the vehicle. You can see a white tractor looking vehicle, with a bucket on the front of it heading toward the van. You cannot make out who is inside the tractor or why it is headed toward the van. Then at the end of the clip, the tractor hits the van with enough force to knock a part of the bumper off and send it flying onto the ground.

00:13-00:14

In this short second of a scene we see the blonde mother figure jump back from the driveway she is facing. She holds her hand to her chest as though she is startled with her mouth gasping open. She also has a wedding ring on her finger telling us she is married. We also have a better picture of the yard showing us how the leaves have all been raked which could conclude a male figure might have been helping her out. This was also intended to show pathos for vivid language and emotions.

00:14-00:19

During this scene the man in the work tractor pushes the door open with his left hand. In his right hand it is revealed he has a cell phone in it. As the door opens you can see he looks unphased by the accident that just occurred when he crashed into the van. The man continues to sit in the tractor and text on his phone. The tractor is very dirty as though it is used often. Soon after he completes texting on his phone the camera shows him look toward the young brunette girl and smile. It is obvious at this point that the man is just as oblivious to texting and driving as the daughter figure.  The young girl has her arms crossed and replies to him as in an annoyed stance. Again, the man says something to the girl, and we can see he is wearing a construction outfit. From this angle we can also see that the entire front bumper has fallen onto the driveway. In the background their appears to be a shop of other cars and work vehicles, this could imply across the street is some sort of workshop. The creator most likely intended to put a message of pathos again in order to show the relationship and energy between the two in the scene.

00:19-00:20

A close up zoom in of the young daughter’s face shows her role her eyes and laugh to whatever the older man said. You then see her pick up her right hand which has a phone in it and laugh. She starts to stare at the screen and type. This is clearly a regular occurrence due to the laughing and smiling and still picking up the cell phones. The mother figure is clearly the one trying to keep everything together but that is hard to do when dealing with her husband and daughter who are constantly putting themselves at risk due to their cell phones.

00:21-00:22

The camera flashes back to the older man in the tractor. He is smiling ear to ear and also wearing a wedding ring, so its safe to assume he is the father. The man continues to smile and grip onto his phone and then begin typing again as if the event never even happened. Seems like these events occur often based on their body language and could explain why the van is so banged up. This could be the logos part of the add which gives reason to why the vehicle looks the way it does and creates a solid comparison.

00:22-00:24

The words “Distracted Driving is No Joke” appear on a black screen. The font is solid and has an effect the brings it closer and closer to the viewer.

00:24-00:37

The black screen then changes to display a “STOPTEXTSSTOPWRECKS.ORG” website. It also contains the name of a project and couple ad agency’s that worked on the piece. This concludes the ad and wraps it up. The director put this slide in to get the message across and used ethos to do so by citing sources and creating branding.

Visual Rewrite – l8tersk8ter

0:01 The video starts up-close on a person holding what appears to be a scrapbook. The shirt being worn is baby blue with buttons and some ruffles, like a blouse. The hands are on the smaller side, the nails are well groomed, and we see part of a ring on one of her fingers. These are indicators that this person is most likely a woman (not a young girl due to the blouse). It is also possible the ring is a wedding ring, it appears to be just a band but it is possible the diamond is out of frame, so she could be married now or was married at one point (which means a spouse would have died if she was still wearing it, that is unlikely to happen in a divorce). It seems to be an indoor setting because the lighting is dim and the person is sitting on some kind of furniture. It appears to be a couch because there is room next to her that would allow someone else to sit and there is also one visible pillow. She could have purposely left enough space next to her because she is waiting for someone to join her, maybe even her husband indicated by the ring. Or if she was married (or even if she wasn’t) she could have a child/children that she’s waiting for to join her. She has opened the cover of the scrapbook to reveal the first page. The page is a white background with a protective sleeve, which is probably what allows the pictures to be slid in and held in place. The pictures are not arranged in any particular order bur rather were just placed in so that they are visible but slightly overlapping at some parts. There are 5 pictures. There are also two other things in the page which look like flowers that come in scrapbooking kits to add some decoration. One of the pictures is in the shape of a square and a close up of someone’s face. which means it could have be a polaroid. The other four pictures all have multiple people in them, their ages unidentifiable, and are the rectangles that are common from a digital camera or film camera. The pages are well worn and the plastic seems to be warped along the edges of the pages so the scrapbook is likely old. This is probably a book of photos of the woman’s family from holidays, parties, or maybe just everyday life. It could have been from her childhood or possibly one she made for her own family years ago, which would mean she is older now since scrapbooks are less common in current times with everything stored on smartphones or computers. She could be looking at this because she lost a family member and is reminiscing on memories, or maybe there is a celebration such as a birthday or wedding that she wants to gather some pictures for.

0:02 The scene is now zoomed out and it is confirmed that there is a woman sitting inside on a sofa. It is now seen that she is wearing gray slacks with her blouse. She has one leg tucked under her and the other on the ground. This position suggests she is planning on being settled in there for a little bit to relax and go through the scrapbook. She has blonde hair about shoulder length with wispy straight across bangs. She looks to be in her fifties or sixties. The light gray/beige couch is a three-cushion wide sofa with the last one extended out as a lounger. There are 5 decorative pillows of varying sizes, one of which her arm is rests against. The room is lit a little better than the first shot with light coming in through a glass paned door from the right. The door has long shutter blinds that are open to light the room. There is something in the back corner of the room that sort of looks like a coat rack, but it is hard to clearly see what is on it. Next to that is a cabinet with glass panes, the contents are not visible due to the reflection of the door. Next to that the wall slightly protrudes out and just over the coach on this wall the top of a fireplace is seen. Further to the left there is a tall potted plant in a brown vase with white flowers. This room is likely the living room of a home, probably the woman’s home considering she is alone and comfortably relaxed on the couch. In front of the couch there is a dark leather ottoman. On top of the ottoman is a glass of water and two more scrapbooks. The woman is planning on looking through those scrapbooks as well if she has not already. Her expression is neither one of joy nor sadness, but she rather just looks content as she looks down at the scrapbook she is holding. She is now multiple pages into the book, whether it’s the same one as before or a new one, so some time has passed since the last shot. She must not be in a rush because time has passed and she is still in a relaxed position on the couch.

0:03 The scene is the same as before but this time she has turned her head and focus from the left page to the right. Her mouth seems to be slightly more upturned than before into a small smile. Her left hand is moving across the book towards the right side. She either going to touch a picture, point to one, or turn the page. When she moves her head it is more visible that her hair is wavy and her bangs are fuller than they first appeared to be. Considering her presumed age her hair is probably died to be the blonde color that it is.

0:04 The view is now a close up of the scrapbook that the woman was seen looking at. There is a white background. One central picture is the main focus, but there are the edges of two other pictures on either side. One of the picture edges seems to feature the side of a toilet with either a bucket or trashcan next to it. The other edge of a different picture is what seems to be the pattern of the same couch in the main picture. These pictures were probably all taken in a house and its highly likely all in the same house. The main picture is of a baby, or maybe young toddler probably between one and two years old. The baby is sitting in the corner of a brown and beige plaid patterned couch. This couch reminds you of something you would see in your grandparents house when you were younger, one that isn’t the most fashionable and kind of out of style so the picture is probably older. Next to the couch in the corner of the room is a house plant. The walls are white. The baby is wearing light blue or white pants and a bright blue winter coat. The coat has matching mittens hanging off of the sleeves. The hood is up and it can be seen that the inside is lined with red. It is unclear if the baby is a boy or girl, but it the blue outfit suggests more so a boy. A pair of big black sunglasses are on the baby’s face, which are almost the size of his face so they probably belong to a parent or other adult that was present during the picture. The baby is making no expression so he was probably just placed in that position and told to sit still. He may have been told to smile but can probably not comprehend what that means at his age (or her, it is not confidently determined). Since its more suggested the baby is a boy, he could be the woman’s son which would mean she probably made the scrapbook. It could also possibly be the husband she had/has, or maybe a sibling, but the photo does not seemed aged enough for the picture to be that old. So it can be assumed this child is a son (or daughter). Whoever the child is, the photo was likely taken by their parent, maybe grandparent, when they got a new winter coat or maybe were about to go play in the snow.

0:05-0:06  Now a different photo in the book is shown. There is the same white background has before and once again a centrally focused photo. To the top left there is an edge of another picture, but it is mostly white, kind of resembling a floor, but nothing can be clearly distinguished. To the top right there is the very bottom of a different photo and the only thing that can be identified is some wood surface, either a floor or table probably. The main photo is a little boy, around three to five years old, in a boat. He has dark hair, medium length for a boy, and some hair at the top is sticking up. It is either being blown by just wind or the boat is moving and that is what is causing the wind. He seems to be of an Asian ethnicity due to the shape of his eyes and his slightly darker complexion, but he could also just be squinting due to his smile or being outside. It is warm out where he is, even though the sky seems a little gray, because he is wearing a red t-shirt. He is also wearing a life vest that is lifted off of his shoulders and pressed under his chin, so it is probably a little too big on him. His right hand is holding a lollipop and rested against the boat steering wheel and his other hand is holding the bottom of the wheel. He is smiling but not looking at the camera so the smile is genuine and not forced. He is looking at someone else in front of him or just at wherever the boat is going. In the background there is a small mountain, seemingly green so covered with either trees or grass. There is also a lighter strip along the bottom of the mountains, maybe where they drop off or a small beach. Between the boat and the mountains is a stretch of water. It is likely a lake because there are not waves characteristic of the ocean and it is definitely larger than a pond because the mountains are a good distance away. The boat has a short plastic covering assumed to be the windshield in front of the boy. The boat is a brown color, but the exterior is only slightly seen by the windshield. The seat behind the boy is a white/beige color. There is also a dark spot in the bottom right corner but it is unclear what it is, maybe another shield like the windshield because it is similar in color. The boy is most likely not actually driving the boat because he is so young, so he is just standing there for a picture which was probably taken by a parent. The water must be open with nothing in the way for them to trust only the little boy standing at the steering wheel, or the boat is stopped. The boat does not seem to be anything fancy. It could be owned by the little boys family, a family friend, or maybe even just rented for the day. This little boy is probably the baby in the previous photo.

0:07-0:08 The focus shifts to a new picture so the woman has turned the scrapbook page once again. The centrally focused picture takes up more of the screen than before. The picture is all the way to the right of the page because the end of the plastic is seen out of focus to the right. The white background is less visible, either because this page is more crowded with pictures or because it is closer up than before. To the left the edge of a picture is seen but all that can be told is that it is dark. Overlapping the main photo in the top right corner is another image but not enough is seen to identify anything in it. One person in the photo is a boy around ten years old. His darker complexion, dark eyebrows (his hair is covered with a hat), and his eye shape suggest he is the same boy as the previous photo and most likely as the baby photo. He is wearing a white hat with a black or navy-blue rim and the word “FINALS” in red font across the front. This could be from a sporting event, a team he plays for, or maybe a team he likes. He is wearing a yellow short-sleeve polo and dark pants. Something is on his wrist, it’s a dark band maybe of a watch or just a bracelet. He is smiling, (it looks like a genuine smile but it could also have been just for the photo) and looking at the camera. He is crouched down to match the height of a little girl standing next to him. She is around five or six years old and standing erect with her hands in front of her, one hand grasping the opposite wrist. She is also smiling, but a bit more forced like she is posing, and looking in the direction of the camera, but slightly to the side so maybe someone else was also taking a photo or something else just caught her attention. She is wearing a blue long t-shirt, or maybe it’s a t-shirt dress, with pink flowers all over it in a random pattern. She has blonde shoulder length hair with straight across bangs and has paler skin. This little girl looks more similar to the woman from the begging of the video. They have the same haircut and appear to be the same ethnicity. If they boy is the woman’s son possibly these two kids are siblings and the boy could be adopted, or they could have different dads, or maybe they are just cousins through the moms side. Maybe this little girl was the baby from the first close up picture and there are two children being focused on. Behind them there is a green garland with red berries, like holly, and what seems to be miniature Christmas stockings hanging down, which means the photo was taken in the winter, maybe at a family holiday party. The room behind them is relatively dark, but there is also a visible table blocked mainly by the boy. On it is a red and white tablecloth, also hinting towards Christmas. There are things on the table but they cannot be identified because they are blocked by the boy as well as the overlapping picture. This is an indoor setting because of objects commonly found in a house. This photo further confirms the scrapbook is a family gallery from holidays, gatherings, and everyday life.

0:09 The scene shifts back to the woman from the beginning of the video. It is closer up on her face than any shot before as we see from just below her shoulders and then the top of her head is cut off. She is in the same location, indicated by the fireplace, couch, and so-called coat rack still visible behind and to the sides of her. She is also wearing the same blue blouse and her hair is styled the same as before. She is once again looking down at the scrapbook she has been looking through. Her eyebrows seem darker from this close up, so maybe her hair is not naturally blonde, which would make sense if the young boy that has been in the photos is her son with the dark hair. The corners of her mouth are now definitely upturned into a soft smile. Her nose is slightly crinkled and so are her eyes and around her mouth, which are also indicators of a smiling expression. From this close we can more clearly see the wrinkles on her face and that her skin is aged, confirming that she is older. She looks happy, whatever photo she is looking at brought her joy and reminded her of a good memory, or maybe she is just happy to see a photo of her younger self or someone else that she cares about.

0:10-0:11 The scene shifts to a completely new setting, which is now a classroom. There are three visible rows of chairs, the third (back) one shorter than the other two, that are curved in a semi-circle all facing the same direction. The view is from the side, so the back of the chairs closest to the camera are seen and as the rows curve the front of the chairs become visible. Some chairs are metal bars with blue plastic seats and circular backs. Other chairs are metal bars with tan plastic seats and rectangular/square backs. The floor is blue carpet that from this view appears clean and the walls are white. The room is very dim. The only light is coming in from a large window that is probably floor to ceiling, but the ceiling is not visible so it is taller than in an average room. There is also some light coming in from a set of doors in the far back corner. The lighting being shown in shows that it is daytime. The empty room with lights off means this classroom is not occupied, so school is out of session or this class just doesn’t happen during the current period. There is a feeling of stark emptiness, which with is exaggerated with watching without sound. There is nothing in site making any movement. It seems to suggest something is missing, classrooms are usually bustling with students, and in a music room filled with sound. Through the window there are trees and another building in the distance. Above the doorway is an exit sign and a circular clock that is common to classrooms. In the front of the room, which is the direction the chairs are facing, there is a tall music stand with nothing on it. This is a musical classroom, which makes sense with the ensemble like arrangement of the chairs, and the raised stand is for the teacher/conductor. There are no visible instruments or music stands in front of the rows of chairs so it could be a choir room, or maybe the instruments are stored out of frame, in a different room, or taken home. The ceiling is likely tall for better acoustics. There are multiple bookshelves against the walls semi-filled. They are too far away to clearly identify what the books are or if there are things other than books on the shelves, such as binders common for holding music. There is a long white board along most of the side wall that is in the frame. There is nothing written on it but a paper does appear to be taped up. On the wall above there is a long poster, but it is too far away to read. There are also posters along the back wall which cannot be clearly read either, but a few symbols resembles music notes. There are two more music stands that are at a lower height in the back of the room. There are also two cabinet like things that have no visible shelves. The back wall has long and wide beige jut outs running vertically with little wall space between them. This might be another feature to help with acoustics. There is a cart in front of the whiteboard that has a projector on it, and another cart at the front of the room, but it is not visible what is on this second one. The lack of color in the posters, because they are all mainly white, suggests a music room for older kids, such as in a middle school or high school. This could be where the woman from the beginning teaches, or maybe where the young boy and/or girl from the photographs attended school when they got older.

0:12 The camera switches from looking at one side wall to the other, so it has just moved to the opposite side of the room. The tan and blue chairs are in the semi-circle formation. There is another window seen and it is revealed it does not go all the way to the ceiling but is still very large. The top was likely just barely cut off in the last shot. The shot is from right next to the row of chairs that was originally facing the camera, so now only half of the semi-circle is seen. The jut outs on the back walls are the same posters with the music notes as the last shot. There are two identical closed cabinets, maybe there are instruments stored inside. There is a smaller white board that flips sides and is on wheels instead of attached to the wall. On it are three rows of music staff lines, maybe four or five but the bottom is blocked by the chairs. On the lines are drawn music notes. The lines are not completely filled so it was probably an exercise and not an actual song that was being played or sung. At the very top there is a vent in the wall. The lighting is the same, only coming in from the window, so this shot was taken probably right after the last shot.

0:13 This scene is in a different room, which still seems to be a classroom, but this time bigger. There are chairs that are the same exact ones as the tan chairs in the first classroom, so this is probably the same school or at the very least the same school district. The only lighting is once again coming through an even larger window than in the other room, showing it is still daytime. The room is unoccupied with the lights off. This window appears to have sticky notes sporadically on the lower portions. The top of the windows cannot be seen once again but it is very likely they go almost to the ceiling. Along the back wall there are the same jut outs as before, but they look a little thicker. On them are large letters (one on each) “C-H-O-I” and there is one more that is not fully visible. This room is for choir. The letters are made of multiple colors of paper. Between each jut out are small square windows. There are trees seen out of all of the windows. The chairs are arranged in three sets of rooms forming a version of a semi-circle. The back rows are elevated on stands/risers, it looks like three levels, and then some are also just on the ground in front of the risers, and these chairs have light shining directly on them. The sun is at an angle that suggest it is either still rising or starting to set. In front and to both sides are rows of chairs that are facing each other with empty space in between. Some chairs between the back and side rows are turned to ease the flow between sections. At the front of the room between the side rows of chairs is a semi large empty table. It is just four metal legs with a rectangular top. To the right of the large window there is a clock, identical to the one in the other classroom, as well as papers/posters but they are too far away to be read. There is also a row of cabinets, maybe filing cabinets holding sheet music, with four frames hanging above the row, which contents are not clearly seen. There is one music stand to the left of the table. All the way to the left of the screen, which is the front of the room, the floor looks slightly elevated and what seems to be the very edge of a grand piano. This is likely played in accompaniment with the choir. Next to the risers is another cabinet with shelves of colorful paper on top, which was probably the paper used to create the large letters that spell out “CHOIR.”

0:14-0:15 The video now introduces a new location. This location is immediately identified from the big sign taking up most of the right side of the screen. The sign is circular and raised on a red and yellow thick pole. On the sign in red fond along the edge of the top half is “One Man Band” with blue starts in between each word, and in blue font along the edge of the bottom half is “Diner.” In the middle of these words is a yellow circle with a man dressed in a marching band uniform (single colored long tailed coat, square-ish hat with a feather, and long pants with black shoes) holding a vertical bass drum and drum stick, a trombone by his mouth, a tambourine strapped to the outside ankle, and what seems to be a tambourine on the other outside ankle as well. He is representative of the one-man band from the name of the diner. To the right and slightly lower, but behind, the sign, is a yellow traffic light, and the metal pole of either another traffic light or a streetlight because the pole bends almost 90 degrees and continues out of frame. Also behind the sign is a telephone pole. It is brown and has wires running in one direction out of frame and in the other direction disappearing behind the building in frame. Behind the sign and to the left is an American Flag all the way up a skinny silver flagpole. It is slightly folded at the top right corner and by the left side, so there is probably some wind making it blow. In the distance at the bottom of the screen is the top of a small tree with spread out branches and not overgrown with leaves. In the left frame is the building previously mentioned, which is the diner the sign is advertising. It is white with red trim and a red awning, which appears to have 5 small yellow starts along the edge. This could wither be a rating or just decoration tying in with the stars on the sign. Above the awning on the building is a large clock. The time reads around 5:08, and the sky is pretty well lit so this is in the evening. The left side of the building is slightly cover by the side of tree resembling the other tree, with spread out branches and small leaves. There are no other visible building, so this diner is likely in a rural or suburban location and not in some city.

0:16 The shot has moved inside the diner. The tables all have booths that are double sided she they connect between all of the tables. They are blue and gray sections that are padded and in a vertical ribbed pattern. The first three booths are normal white tables with a booth on each side. To the left of the booths the wall is completely made of windows, as well as the other wall in the frame. It is light outside and this appears to be the main source of lighting. This is likely just following the previous shot, so it is still around five o’clock in the evening. In the far windows there appears to be the back of neon light signs that are characteristically seen in diner windows, usually saying things like “Open” or “Eat,” although the outside of these signs with the phrases are not visible. The furthest visible booth is in the corner, so it has a rounded booth with one opening. There is one visible light that hangs low a few feet above the table and has a wide circular casing. On the booth that connects the last booth seat to the corner booth seat there is something red sticking up. It appears there are purple flowers with long stems sticking out of the this so it is probably a box. Or it could be a divider and the flowers are coming from a pot on the windowsill. It is hard to tell. The corner booth is occupied by two older people with gray hair. The one facing the camera is a woman with long hair disappearing behind her back and wearing a shite shirt or jacket, below her chest disappears behind the table. She appears to be wearing glasses and is smiling looking at the person across from her. She is entertained by her conversation with the other person or maybe is just happy to be there. The other person is a man with his back to the camera and just below his shoulders and down is covered by the booth. He is wearing a red and gray plaid shirt, and it looks like maybe the side of glasses are seen on the side of his head. He appears to be glancing out the window to his left. They are probably an old married couple, or maybe old friends catching up for dinner (based on the time). Along the windowsill in the booth connected to the corner booth, which is unoccupied, is a stack of menus. This, along with the booths and general setup of the restaurant, is an indicator of this being the same diner as advertised before. In the booth closest to the camera, at the left of the screen (the corner booth is the right of the screen) is the upper body and bottom right face of the man sitting in the booth. He is wearing a blue and white plaid shirt with sunglasses hooked at the collar. He seems to have some light gray scruffy hair on his on his face, bug that is all that can really be seen. His arm is positioned to be on the unseen table in front of him, maybe already eating, just resting it there, or holding a menu. In the middle booth of the three standard booths is an older woman sitting in the booth facing the camera. This is the woman from before who was looking at the scrapbook on the couch inside the house. Her blonde hair is now loosely clipped back with her bangs still hanging in front of her forehead. She is glancing out the window to her right. Her expression is unreadable as before but she just seems content, not happy nor sad. She has one visible gold dangling earring and is probably wearing one in the ear we cannot see as well. She is now wearing a red and white plaid shirt, so this is probably not the same day as she was looking at the scrapbooks, because the lighting suggests similar times of the day. Her elbows are on the table, which appears to be empty of any food or drink, and her hands are clasped in front of her just under her face. She is once again alone, unless there is a person across from her blocked by the man in the blue plaid shirt. She is probably looking out the window because she is waiting for someone to show up, maybe the little boy from the photos who is probably no longer a little boy. The other people in the shot may be there to help create the feeling of a public place. This could suggest that whoever she is waiting to meet is not someone she wants to be alone with.

0:17-0:18 It has zoomed in on the blonde woman’s face. The background is blurry and contains just the windows and booths that were previously described and behind her. Her head is either blocking the two people that were in the corner booth or they have left at some point between these two shots. She is still looking in the direction of the window. The shot is from shoulders to the middle of her forehead and then cut off. She is wearing some eye liner and/or mascara. Her eyes are blue. The wrinkles on her face are much more prominent and visible than previously seen. They are especially there around her mouth and on her upper lip. She looks older in this shot than she did before. Her mouth is slightly turned down, but it appears to just be the natural, relaxed position of her mouth. Her expression does seem to be slightly distressed though. She may be nervous about whoever she is waiting for or just has things going on that are stressing her out.

0:19  The view is of the woman’s hands, which can be concluded because the plaid red sleeves from the shirt she is wearing are blurry but visible. Her fingernails are still well-groomed like in the beginning. Her hands are also wrinkly which is expected with age. The hands are in focus and everything surrounding is blurry. In the blurry background there seems to be a black napkin dispenser. She is twiddling her thumbs, which is often a sign of being nervous. The view is from the direction of her looking at them herself, but from her side rather than her eye level. She is definitely nervous anticipating who she is waiting for.

0:20-0:22 Out of focus on the right of the screen is the black of the woman’s head (her blonde pulled back hair) and the top of her red plaid shirt. She is now faced forward at someone moving into frame in front of her. Over these three seconds a male figure comes into the frame, who must have entered from a door out of shot, as he sits down across from her. Behind him is another red box/divider as seen in the corner booth, so it is probably the opposite side of the dinner and another corner booth. The man has dark hair, dark bushy eyebrows and a mustache. His eyes are scrunched as he smiles wide showing almost all the teeth possible to show in a smile. He is wearing a purple button up collared shirt with the top two bottoms undone creating a casual look. He appears to be in his early thirties. His face does not have wrinkles like the woman’s. This is the boy from the pictures with the dark hair, darker complexion, and distinct eye shape. The woman either looked at the pictures and decided to meet up with him, or he reached out to meet up which led her to looking at the pictures. His wide smile shows he is happy to see her, suggesting a positive healthy relationship between the two. They must be people that care for each other. It is likely this is his mom.

0:23 The scene is the exact same as before, but the man has stopped moving and is now fully seated in the booth, still looking at the woman, assumed to be his mom, sitting across from him.

0:24 The shot shifts to a table in the diner. In the background a glass sugar dispenser is seen. The red plaid shirt is in the shot, so it is still the woman that is also now accompanied by the man. They are both reaching halfway across the table and grasping hands. This is an intimate touch that expresses love for the other person. Next to the woman’s hands is a coffee mug with a string hanging over the side, which is probably a tea bag. She has been in the diner waiting for the man long enough to have ordered tea. There is no visible steam so it has also probably been long enough for the tea to cool. Maybe she was getting anxious and looked nervous because she had to wait and was worried he was not going to show up. This could suggest they haven’t seen each other in a while and maybe left off on bad terms. If that is the case the man’s smile and the embrace of their hands definitely tells that all is forgiven and they are happy to be reunited. Maybe the woman was upset with the man prior to this so he looked happy to see her because he was glad that she wanted to see him. It is not clear why they are meeting, but considering it is almost positive it is a mother son relationship they could just be catching up.

0:25 It is once again close up on the woman face, shoulders to forehead. This time she is looking straight forward at the young man sitting across from her. Her eyes are squinted as she has a huge smile on her face. Her cheeks are also lifted as usually happens when someone smiles big. Any nerves she had are gone and she has pure bliss. She is just has happen to see this young man as he is to see her. The corner booth behind her is once again visible and we can see that the couple is still there, so not so much time has passed that other people ate and left while she was still there. She must have been looking at the scrapbooks to recall fond memories in anticipation of seeing this man (it has to be her son, right? It is not confirmed but he will be referred to as that from now on). She may not have seen her son for a while, or they just have a really close relationship, both of which are reasons she would be so happy to see him.

0:26-0:27 The mother and son are now seen from across the diner with the windows to their side now as the background. A new man is brought into frame. He is sitting in a booth across the aisle from the booths that have previously been seen. He has gray hair and is looking down at a menu. He may be there to remind the viewer that they are still in public during the intimate moment they are sharing. The mother and son are still embraced at their hands and are also still looking at each other, she is still smiling, and the side of his mouth seems to be parted, so he is either still smiling or speaking. Through the windows is the pole the holds up the diner sign, which the very bottom of the circle can be seen, but the pole is now yellow and blue striped so this is a different angle than the pole was first shown. This confirms they are in the One Man Band Diner. In the middle of the screen (directly over the bodies of the mom and son, just below their heads/faces) there is a sentence split into two lines of white text. It says, “In 30 states it’s legal to fire, evict, or deny service to LGBT people.” Since the mother and son have been the primary focus of the video, it can be assumed that one of them (or possibly both) is part of the LGBT community. It can also be assumed that one of them has been discriminated against and either fired or evicted due to their sexual orientation. Since the woman has had a child and was wearing what was possibly a wedding band in the beginning, it is safe to assume that she is probably not the one that is LGBT (although it is a possibility, there are many factors that show otherwise). This means the man is probably the one that was discriminated against because of his sexual orientation. Since a classroom was shown earlier, it can be concluded that he was fired from being a choir teacher. Him no longer being welcomed in that classroom explains the uncomfortable emptiness that was felt while the rooms were being shown. This could be the reason they are meeting up, for comfort or guidance or both. The mom could have been looking at the scrapbooks to reminisce on a time when her son did not have to face injustices such as the one he is currently dealing with. She could have been looking distressed earlier because she was thinking about the situation and worried about if he was okay, which is why she looked happy after seeing that he was happy and okay. She is obviously accepting of his sexual orientation and loves him regardless because she is there for him in his time of struggling.

0:28-0:30 The last thing in this video is a grey screen with white font that says “Get the facts at Beyond I Do.org” in the center. The “Beyond I Do.org” is in bolder font than the beginning of the sentence and the “Beyond I Do” is underlined in yellow. At the bottom right there is a symbol, it appears to be a logo, with the words “GillFoundation” to the right of it. At the bottom left there is a white symbol that says, “ad council,” which is who made the video. This as was about LGBT awareness and against the injustices that those in the community face. Their message that acts such as firing, evicted, or discriminating due to sexuality/sexual orientation is effective. They give small peaks into the life of a little boy as he gets older. He is a happy little boy that seems to have a normal, family orientated life. It is somewhat applied that his life was filled with love and happiness growing up. Then it reveals that he is going through a hardship because of people not supporting who he chooses to love and find happiness with. It creates a humanity and empathy for this man who is human just like everyone else. One flaw in this short clip is the classroom appearing randomly with no indicating connection to woman or the kids in the picture is a little random. However, the video with sound could make more sense of those scenes.

0.00 Camera opens to an empty 4 way intersection with no cars or people. The light is red. you can see store signs on the right. Trees are in frame on the left. We are looking at road as if we can drive straight on it. The hand not allowing pedestrians is red implying people cannot walk through intersection. These lights and signs run regardless of amount of people since they are always on.

0.01 pans to an empty parking lot. Within the first 2 seconds, the video implies that roads are a ghost town which we can infer is due to the stay at home orders that were given from the states from the CDC’s advise. This parking lot is huge, and you can visibly see that every spot is empty, which we can see about 30 total spots. The trees in the shot as well as the shot before are green, which we can imply this video was taken about the start of the pandemic in spring or summer.

0.02 A yellow sign that reads “face masks and gloves may be temporarily unavailable due to high demand” implies that no masks or gloves will be given out for free due to high demand of them, which we know were a priority for hospitals at the beginning of the pandemic. This then adds conflict and panic that sanitary supplies are low for the everyday person and that it would be easier to stay home then go with out these safety products.

0.03 pans to empty shelves assuming the grocery store is sold out of food due to high volume of people stocking up to stay at home. We know these shortages happened in stores, especially with toilet paper. You can see in background not all shelves are empty, but you cannot visibly see what exact products these are. Using background knowledge from my own experience at stores during this time, many shelves were in-fact empty, due to people stocking up and being fearful of leaving home because of the virus.

0.04-0.05 A woman is doing research on the computer and shows a multi colored pie chart able to be seen in the reflection of her glasses. She is typing and moving the mouse which means she is probably doing research on the pandemic, or just reading about it in general. The windows are open in in shot as well as a desk lamp causing the scene to be very bright since it appears to be day time, which we can also see in the reflections in her glasses as well.

0.05 In the next second, the camera pans to a huge cargo ship with red and blue cases sailing over a bright blue ocean with lots of cargo. We can take from this that people are hard at work to deliver safety products such as gloves and masks to not only America, but through out the world. On the ship, we can see at least 80 of these red and blue cargo bins.

0.06 – 0.09 We can see a plane with almost like a conveyer belt machines loading cargo and boxes onto the plane. The video then pans to the same plane in the sky now flying in a bright blue sky with clouds. Again we can take from this is that the supply and demand of these products were so increased, people are working many hours to make and deliver products.

0.09- 0.15 various short clips of people making homemade masks (made of handkerchiefs and various other fabrics that can be bought and made into a mask.) this can be due to the lack of masks that we see on the yellow sign at .02 seconds leaving people to create their own.

0.15- 0.17 shows an abundance of masks in boxes at factories (this relieves the worry that was inflicted by the no mask sign portraying that everything is under control and masks will be able to be distributed)

0.017-0.20 a man in a dark room alone looking concerned and is rubbing his face like he is uncomfortable (no mask on) and looks conflicted ( To mask up, or to not? That is the question.) This could be a sign of distrust whether he should believe the news and media or not.

0.20 two men loading jugs of water into trunk of car from a cart at grocery store both properly masked but body language is positive .two men are probably engaged a in conversation

0.21 a child on monkey bars and an older adult supervising at park both wearing masks. The body language is positive showing they are able to still have fun while still using precaution. Two other people are blurry in the background but you are still able to see that they are wearing masks as well.

0.21 a barber performing a haircut on a man both masked up. 4 other people are barely able to see in the background but they are also wearing masks. By this point, we can assume the video is now if not weeks, then months after since barbershops were deemed not essential.

0.22 a man in vegetable section of grocery store browsing and also wearing a mask.

0.23 a woman in a kitchen restaurant setting making food with 4 other people (everyone is wearing a mask) you can tell they are busy in the kitchen, but are safely distanced apart. There is no signs of negative body language.

0.24- 0.26 a little boy in what seems like a living room with both hands on hip like a brave superhero while wearing a blue cape, a red and white shirt with a star on it, a red eye mask, and a mask which you can infer they are implying that by wearing a mask and being cautious you can save lives.

0.26- remainder of video screen turns black and flashes “Mask up America” on screen

#MaskUpAmerica was located at the bottom right hand corner throughout the whole video.

After watching this video, you can tell the Ad council is stressing the importance of masks and how we can save lives by wearing a mask. This is useful to show the mass that regardless of the rumors and conspiracy theories, to stop this pandemic we need to each individually do our part. We can also learn that people are working hard to supply these sanitary products for us Americans.

Visual Rewrite – clementine

[0:00-0:001] What we see on the screen in the first second of the video is the backyard of an average middle-class home. We can tell that it is a middle class home because it is not too big nor too small and it also looks very modern. The video quality is really crisp and clear so the video is most likely scripted. In the backyard, there is a table with four chairs surrounding it with a grill right near it. The fact that the table has more than two chairs could lead us to believe that there’s a family is living in this home. The grass and the trees around the house look very green with tints of orange in them too. We could assume that it is the beginning or end of summer based on the color of the leaves and grass. Then, someone appears to have turned a light on inside the house. When we turn a light on in the house when the house is completely black, usually it means that it is either night time or early in the morning. Since the sky is cloudy and it is light outside, it is most likely the morning. This scene sets the tone of being in a comfortable and normal home which many middle class citizens can relate to.

[0:02-0:04] The camera is now inside a refrigerator pointed towards the refrigerator doors. In the refrigerator we can see there is fruit, orange juice, and milk. The refrigerator seems to be fully stocked which lets the viewers know that this family has a steady income and can support themselves. Next, a man opens the refrigerator doors and scans what is inside the refrigerator. By his actions, he seems to be looking for something to eat. The man looking into the refrigerator looks like he is in his mid thirties or forties. He also looks like he is wearing a loose top and a robe which possibly could be pajamas. Behind the young man is a boy who looks like he is around ten or eleven years old. This leads us to the question – is this his son?

[0:05-0:08] In this scene, the camera is now in the kitchen showing the boy standing behind the man in front of the refrigerator. The boy is wearing comfortable clothes like the man, so this lets us believe that they live in the same house, therefore, the man could possibly be the boy’s dad. More evidence suggesting their relationship is that the boy is relying on the man to get whatever he needs in the fridge. Young boys usually rely on their dad to do most things. Since the boy is standing behind the man while the man is looking in the refrigerator, this tells us the man is probably looking to feed the boy. The director of this video purposefully made the boy be behind his father so that it created a sense of reliance on what the man was going to pick out of the refrigerator. The father grabs milk out of the refrigerator and quickly passes the milk behind him to his kid. The father then playfully throws a spoon in the air behind him and the son catches it. Since the son was just standing there and was prepared to catch everything his father threw at him, this tells us that this might be an every morning fun routine for them. All of the food items the father threw at his son were breakfast items which can confirm our prediction that it is morning. Interestingly, a mother figure is absent in these clips. This raises the question if their is a mother absent in their family or if she is the provider of the family and at work. The boy looked very comfortable while the dad was throwing things at him which can lead us to think that his father feeds him breakfast every morning and takes care of him well. The father being playful in these couple of seconds is for the viewers to feel comfortable with the father-son relationship that they have.

[0:09-0:11] The father starts moonwalking and dancing while the son is sitting down waiting for breakfast to be served. The son’s facial expression is pretty bland and unbothered by his father’s silly actions, so this tells us that the kid is used to his father acting silly in the morning. The father grabs a cereal box and before he pours it into his son’s cereal bowl, he waits for his son to touch his hand before he continues his dancing. This shows us that the father wants his son to be happy even though his son is used to his father’s craziness. This routine could help the father and the son wake up hence why the father wanted the son to interact with his dancing. Every parent wants their child to feel comfortable and have fun in their own home, so this scene speaks to parents. There is also drawings and paintings on the walls of the kitchen so that tells us that this family really cares about their kid/kids hard work.

[0:12-0:23] By the son hitting the father’s hand, the son indicates that he wants his father to give him cereal but to also continue dancing. When the son hits his hand, the son smiles and shakes his head. This tells the viewers that the father is silly normally and the son is used to this behavior. Again, this indicates that the father wants to be involved with his son in the morning. The father continues to dance around the kid with the cereal box in his hand. He slowly dances away from the son and moonwalks out of the kitchen. The kid is visibly seen smiling while the father is doing this. By the kid smiling and facial expressions, we can tell that he doesn’t find his dad annoying, but he appreciates him dancing and makes him happy. It is also interesting that the father is dancing away from his son and not eating with him. This could be because the father might go to work at home or needs to get ready for the day himself. He is putting his child first before himself which shows us that he sacrifices time for his son to have a great morning.

[0:24:-0:30] As the father dances out of the kitchen, a text appears on the screen that states, “Make a moment.” This implies that since the father was dancing and making his kid happy, he made a difference in his son’s morning and also created a memory for the him. The camera pans to the son’s face and he is smirking while looking where his father danced away. His facial expression looked like he wanted to communicate that he really appreciates his dad and how loving he is. This creates a persuasion to the viewers who have good parents because this ad shows that they should appreciate their dads more. Then, the screen displays a hashtag that says “#DancelikeaDad.” This hashtag encourages dads watching this ad to be more loving or continue to love their children just as much as the dad loved his kid in this ad. Showing no mother figure in this ad was purposeful because the ad wanted to highlight how great dads are whether they are single dads or not. This ad also tells dads that their kids appreciate the little things that they do more than dads think.

Visual Rewrite-Hailthegreat8

0:01-0:03 The video begins with the camera zoomed in on a half-eaten plate with a fork and a knife on top of it. It seems someone is eating breakfast. The food looks good. There is a half glass of milk behind the plate and bowls on the table, and I believe a blue napkin behind the milk. The camera then cuts to a man with a nice haircut in a blue suit with a tie picking up a piece of his food. He’s probably eating before heading off to work. He then starts looking upstairs while taking a brief sigh. Looking at his facial expression, he seems a little annoyed about what’s going on up there. You then see a fridge with multiple pictures taped on it. It appears that a child drew those pictures. You can also see background tissue papers, bananas, a trash can, and a sink. He is eating his food in the kitchen

0:04-0:08  The camera now shows where the man is at. He is in the kitchen; you can see the fridge and other objects behind him; you can also see another room on the right of him. It appears to be the living room. This is the man on the screen house. You see him eating his food; he is most like eating breakfast or dinner; you can’t tell what time it is because of their no clock and their no window on the screen. The man then starts moving, trying to get back into a comfortable position. His facial expression tells me he is still a little annoyed about what’s happing upstairs in his house; you don’t know what or who is upstairs. He suddenly jumps a bit from his seat; something upstairs startled him. Then he starts looking up again; you see his eyes start moving left and right while looking up. He’s thinking about what the person is doing upstairs.

0:09-0:15 The man does a mad sigh while continue to look up. You then start to hear footsteps upstairs; someone is walking up there. He then breaths out in relief. While still looking to the right of him. Then he shouts the words, “I love you.” out of nowhere while always looking up.

0:16-0:23 The camera starts to zoom in while the words “Never Stop Being A Dad” slowly appears as the color white on the screen. The man continues to look up, and he then looks down on the table; you hear his breath, and then there a sudden ding sound, and the words “Never Stop Being A Dad” disappears from the screen. The man looks to the right of himself, grabs his phone, unlocks it, and looks at it. The camera suddenly cuts to the screen of his cellphone. See, he gets a text from “J” at 7:44 pm, so we find out he was eating dinner, not breakfast, as I thought during the beginning of the video. The text he got is a heart emoji with “U2” next to it. The camera stays focused on the phone for a second.

0:24-0:37 The camera then cuts to the man face, and he a quick breath in, he shakes his head a little, and you see a small smile on his face while he puts his cellphone back on the table, then the words “Dadication” pops up fast on the screen in the color white. He picks up a piece of his food, closes his eyes and places it in his mouth, and starts chewing as the couple adds, and the words “fatherhood.gov” pops up in white on the bottom of the screen. You begin to make some slight noises from eating while he shakes his head and the top right of himself. The screen then freezes on what I briefly mentioned during my previous sentences until the videos time reaches the end 0:37

0:00-0:01: As the commercial begins, we see a hand writing on a piece of paper that seems to be on top on a notebook. The paper looks to contain fractions, so we can make the assumption that this assignment is related to math. The hand is seen holding a pencil and making marks on the paper. A hair tie is on the wrist of the girl. We can assume the person attached to the hand is a girl because, strands of long hair are also present in this initial shot. The brightness of the image conveys that the girl is working under a bright light most likely at her kitchen table and since this light is on it’s safe to assume that it is nighttime. The other surroundings that help further prove this girl is a student include: a nearby folder and what seems a math workbook in the upper side of the frame.

0:02-0:04: The camera then shifts to showing us the student herself. The girl has on a ring and her somewhat long hair appears. The girl is also seen wearing a watch that appears to tell the time of either 8 or 9pm. At first glance, she seems bored. The work she is trying to complete appears to not interest her and to take a step further it seems she appears frustrated. In the same frame, the girl pushes her hair back in a way that conveys stress. We can assume that the work that is being done is either stressful and/or difficult. Her facial expressions give us the assumption that she would rather be doing anything right now then the work in front of her.

0:05-0:08: The very next shot of this commercial shows a man wearing glasses with his hand on his head while seated next to the girl working on the math problems. The man appears to be struggling as well as when he lifts his head up, he brings his attention back onto the girl as he was previously looking down at either the table or the math book. This inferences that the man is trying to help the girl with her homework. The duo are seated at a table in what appears to be a dining room as we can see a mug and a sandwich on a plate on the table, a lamp, curtains, set of windows and a small portion of a portrait. It’s indeed nighttime because outside of the windows nighttime is clearly visible.

0:09-0:15: The man suddenly looks up at the girl and then quickly turns to his phone that reveals he is using a calculator. We see a shot of the phone and the man is calculating the equations that the girl is trying to do. We can make the inference that the man does not know what he is doing and is simply trying to help the girl in anyway he can. As the image then goes back to the man, he is seen not even looking at the phone rather at the girl. It then appears the man is pointing something out in the book.

0:16-0:24: The girl then suddenly notices the man is on his phone and looks up at him. The man then quickly throws his phone back on the table and puts his hand on his chin as to appear that he was not on it. The girl quickly then crosses her arms and gives him a slight smirk, from that we can assume that the girl was in a way judging or mocking the man for using his calculator. The man tries to play it off by appearing shocked she looked in his direction. Simultaneously during the interaction, text appears on the screen reading: “If you love them enough to re-learn math so you can teach them math, then surely you’ll check NHTSA.gov/TheRightSeat”. As the video comes to an end we have learned that the man and girl are most likely father and daughter and that the video was trying to get the message across about checking children’s car seats. At first we do not understand the comparison but after seeing the video multiple times we can draw the conclusion that they are trying to convey if you care enough to try to reteach yourself something so you can then teach that to your child, then surely you care enough to see if they are buckled in when they are in a moving vehicle.

0:01-0:02 The video begins with a close up of  a dinner-size plate that appears to be only half finished. We can assume the meal being eaten is dinner since the plate has peas, macaroni and possibly chicken on it. The food also appears to be rather homemade and not too elaborate in its presentation. It seems that someone had eaten half the contents of the plate; leaving the other half scattered about the plate. The silverware had been left on the plate with the handles outward, away from the contents of the plate. This obvious attempt to keep the handles of the silverware clean implies that the person eating the meal will return to continue eating. A single fly lingers on the plate giving off the impression that whoever was dining has been absent for a significant amount of time. The room is very dim, implying that it’s later in the day. The half-drank glass of milk next to the plate shakes just slightly as if a door was just slammed. A crumpled up napkin sits alongside the plate as if someone had thrown it down in a hurry. It appears that this plate is not located in a restaurant, rather a home. The worn, wooden table, simplistic silverware, and smorgasbord of foods on the plate imply this is a casual home cooked meal. This scene automatically appeals to the pathos of the viewer since it’s a comfortable, familiar setting. The unexplained contrast between the careful placement of the silverware and the lengthy absence of the individual targets the viewers’ logos.

0:03- 0:13 The camera pans to a middle aged man sitting across from the unattended plate. He appears to be a working man, dressed in a shirt and tie. The fridge behind him is covered with cards, calendars, sticky notes, and artwork, implying that this man most likely has children. The lines in his forehead suggest stress or perhaps are just the result of age. No other parental figure is featured in the clip and since dinner is commonly eaten together as a family, it’s implied that this man is a single father. He glances upward with an irritated, tired expression on his face. The direction of his gaze seems to point to the ceiling or top corner of the room. He then glances back down at his plate only before quickly glancing back upwards towards what perhaps could be the upstairs of his house. The man winces as if a loud or startling sound just occurred. He clenches his jaw and looks away with a distressed expression. He looks off into the upward direction of the room one more time and lets out a deep sigh as if reflecting on what had just happened. By creating this visual of a working class man raising children on his own, they are appealing to the viewer’s ethos. Who’s more trustworthy than a hard working single father? The upset expression on the mans face appeals to pathos.

0:14- 0:21 The camera pans backwards revealing the entire table the man is sitting at and more of the room. We see that the man is in what appears to be a middle class home; no lavish furniture or appliances. The man is again looking up at what we assume to be the upstairs of the house. He utters only a couple words while still looking in this direction. At 0:16 the words “Never stop being a dad.” appear on the screen, implying the other individual is his child. He then slowly lowers his gaze until a notification on his phone pulls his attention back to the table and he grabs his phone. The careful selection of scenery adds to the ethos appeal. By demonstrating that this man lives an average, middle class lifestyle, he is instantly more relatable and seems credible. The pathos of the viewer are also targeted through the text on screen. A vast majority of viewers either are a father figure to someone else or have a father figure in their lives. The impact of “never stop being a dad” is that the viewer is forced to imagine either not having their father figure in their lives or no longer being that figure to someone else.

0:22-0:23 The screen pans to a close up of a text message conversation. The most recent incoming text message reads: *heart icon* U 2. This response indicates that the man was previously telling his child he loved them.  The heavily abbreviated text reflects the youth of the individual; perhaps a tween or teen. Once the viewer understands the age of this man’s child, the confrontation from earlier comes without surprise. This short frame of the phone screen automatically appeals to pathos by demonstrating the bond between a father and child.

0:24-31 The camera pans back to the man’s face. After reading this heartfelt text message, he appears to look relieved, much different than the beginning of the clip. He shakes his head as a subtle smirk creeps across his face. He pops what appears to be a french fry in his mouth and continues to shake his head as he chews. Finally he glances back up to the upstairs of the house, where we assume his child has been residing. This scene is relatable for parents, as well as children, since it is common for parents and teens to have disputes. The ad suggests that although being a father isn’t always easy, it’s well worth it.

0:00-0:01-
In this image we see a young man at the bar. He appears to be in his late 20’a to early 30’s. He appears to be with a group of people. A man who looks a little younger and more cleaned up is talking to someone, it appears to be female. We take a look at the table and it seems to be that there are alcoholic beverages on the table. It looks like they are at a fancy bar if we look behind them we can see all the different types of alcohol and fancy light. The man in the middle seems to be drinking a beer, while the other gentleman is drinking a martini and the female is drinking a glass of wine. This indicates that they have been drinking.

0:01-0:02– The man gets up from the table and he puts his jacket on. We can see the buttons pressed against his stomach, the shirt may be a little too small. We can also get from this that he drinks a lot and has a beer belly. He appears to be getting ready to leave. The camera pans to the table where his phone and keys are at. He stares down and grabs his keys but his phone is still on the table. He then waves to the two other people at the table and begins to walk away.

0:03-0:09- The man makes a quick turn back to the table where he grabs a glass of water and chugs the water. He did not turn around because he forgot his phone he wanted to drink more water to try and sober up.This indicates that he was attempting to sober up so he could drive home. Once he is finished drinking the water he puts the glass down on the table and realizes his phone is still on the table. He reaches for his phone that is on the table and he picks it up. He then gets a text from his sober self in the text we can see that it says ” Ehem we both know what you’re doing”. He looks at the text and gives a smirk like who cares.

0:10-0:12- He smiles at his cell phone then puts it back into his pockets. He turns very quickly to the bar where he picks up another glass of water and begins chugging it. He is really trying to sober up so he can drive him self home. Once he finishes the water his phone rings again. He reaches in and pulls his phone out with another text from his sober self saying ” water isn’t some magic cure man”. Now we can conclude that he was indeed trying to chug water so he could try and sober up and drive home. From this text we can see that it is very early in the night it is only 6:45 pm. We can maybe get from this that he started drinking earlier in the day.

0:13-0:24– The man turns and walks quickly into the restroom. He looks at him self in the mirror. He looks very out of it his face looks pale. He reaches down and turns the cold water on and begins to splash water onto his face. After he finishes putting water onto his face he takes a deep breathe and looks up from the sink and looks back at himself in the mirror. The phone laying on the sink buzzes, he looks down to see another text from his sober self saying “So, you calling the ride or should I?” He looks down at the phone and then looks back in the mirror. You can tell right here that he realizes that he should just call for a ride. He looks back at the mirror one last time and smiles and begins typing on his phone. We can get that he was calling or texting someone for a ride home. The video ends off with a voice saying ” if you need to do something to feel okay to drive then your not okay to drive.” this whole videos was showing signs of someone attempting to drink and drive and it should you what you should do if you drank and you need to call a ride.
