The Real Cost

Trendy clothes purchased online everyday for $15 or less has detrimental effects on the environment. There is little thought going into the decision to purchase clothes on fast fashion websites because of their low prices. The focus is on how inexpensive the clothes are and that they are up to date with the trends. No one thinks about what happens to the garments after they are worn a few times and have served their purpose; to show that the wearer is fashionable. When those clothes are tossed after they’ve served their short lived purpose they take years to breakdown in landfills. The importance of clothes must shift from fashionable to durable. There are other ways to get less expensive clothes that are timeless pieces of fashion that have a long service life.

Fatale Fast Fashion Fads

Websites have started to emerge in recent years that grab consumer’s attention by offering the lowest price for the current clothing trends. The clothes are cheaply made and aren’t worn more than a handful of times before they are thrown away because they are out of style or damaged. The garments from these fast fashion websites are pilling up in landfills and take years to break down. The build of of clothes contributes to increased pollution leading to the destruction of the environment. The focus of clothes needs to be on the longevity of being able to wear them instead of just how well they fit into the current trends. There are ways to get less expensive clothes that are still fashionable and long-lasting.

Bosch estimates that it should take a minute to reboot the system if it is falsely tripped. This is an example of a causal claim. The claim is that if something occurs (the system being falsely tripped) then something will happen (the system will take a minute to reboot) because of the occurance.

Customers

The saw weighs 79 pounds and retails for $1299, compared to other benchtop table saws of similar size, weight and features, (but for the injury mitigation system) selling for $500 – $600. This is an evaluation claim that analyzes the difference between the two types of saw.

Industry Spokesperson

The estimated population of all table saws on the market in the US for 2001/2002 was 8.0 million and for 2007/2008 was 9.5 million. This is a numerical claim and tells the reader how popular tables saws are in the US.

Consumer Safety Advocate

The CPSC predicts switching to the safer saw design will save society $1,500 to $4,000 per saw sold by reducing medical bills and lost work. This is a casual claim informing the reader that if the switch was made to a safer saw design, then medical bills would be lower.

If this safety mechanism had been included in the table saw, Osorio’s injuries would have been limited to a 1/8-inch cut on only one finger… This is a causal claim and is telling the reader that if Osorio had been able to use Safety Saw, then he would not have any of his injuries.

Government Officials

The CPSC predicts switching to the safer saw design will save society $1,500 to $4,000 per saw sold by reducing medical bills and lost work. This is a consequential claim that tells the reader hanging and switching to safer saw design is shown to be reasonable in the claim.

Vancouver suffers from a drug epidemic where heroin addicts are committing crimes to feed their addiction, so a program called “free heroin for addicts” attempt’s to stop this. Heroin addicts are responsible for a large portion of the crime rate in Vancouver and have a hard time getting through their day-to-day lives. Daily activities such as jobs, interactions, and relationships are hard to maintain due to their addiction. These heroin addicts will do whatever possible including breaking and entering, and stealing. The flaw with the program may be that it doesn’t help addicts get off heroin. The program’s main goal seems to be just to save the city from rising crime rates related to heroin-related crime. Although the pros of providing heroin to addicts would result in addicts being off the streets, and no need for them to commit petty crimes. Providing heroin also would in turn keep users out of the hospital. Hospitals continuously deal with addicts who suffer from their own infliction and do not have enough money to afford the bill. By giving people heroin in the cleanest way possible the program keeps addicts out of hospitals. The program will fix the crime that takes place in the city, but will not fix the addicts who live in it.

A huge problem exists in Vancouver with heroin addicts committing crimes to support their habits. The “free heroin for addicts” program exists only to help addicts live comfortably and productively. However, Drug addicts are responsible for a high rate of crimes in the area. It is obvious that addicts have a hard time getting through their day to day lives. Daily activities such as jobs, interactions, and relationships are hard to maintain. A heroin addict is willing to do anything(especially criminally) to get their fix. Addicts will break, enter, and steal with no remorse. They will search high and low to feed their addiction. Through this program, however, addicts will receive no support in transitioning off of the drug. The program only serves to reduce heroin related crime. If patients are given heroin, they won’t have to source it through illegal or dangerous means. Hospital visits from heroin overdose will consequently be reduced. Hospitals shouldn’t be forced to take patients that come off the streets dying from their choice to use heroin, and can’t even pay for their treatment. By giving these addicted individuals free heroin, it might reduce the crime rate, but the addicts in question will not reach the catharsis of freeing oneself from the prison that is addiction.

Treating addicts is not an easy task for doctors, and yet thousands of doctors around the world continue to prescribe opioids to patients. The pharmaceutical industry heavily relies on opioids because it has large profit in the United States, which means that the opioid epidemic can only be stopped is if another drug with the same treatment power as opioids, without the high risk of addiction. Researchers have been looking into the idea of harm reduction using medical cannabis to help with patients manage their opioid cravings. By replacing opioids with another drug like cannabis within the pharmaceutical industry, it would ensure that the industry still profits and that the patients are less likely to have their lives ruins by prescription opioid use. The legalization of medical marijuana in the United States could stop the opioid crisis in its tracks by lowering the number of innocent people killed due to overdose by gradually replacing prescription opioids with medical cannabis and using it as a harm reduction strategy for opioid dependents.

The opioid crisis has been killing tens of thousands of people each year, and yet very little is being done to decrease the damage opioid use causes. Over the past few decades, there has been a changing consensus surrounding drug use. With more technology and resources than ever before, the United States is more than capable of making significant progress with modern medicine prescription. But opioids have been used and abused to decades, and the pharmaceutical industry does not seem to be interested in finding a new drug to replace addictive opioids. The pharmaceutical industry benefits from opioid use, since it is incredibly effective at treating pain and it is widely studied. Researchers have been attempting to test drugs like marijuana and many of these tests hold promising results against the same diseases where opioids are often used. Unfortunately, there is very little funding from the United State’s government to allow researchers to gather more data. If more funding from the government was going to research, then medical marijuana can be considered a realistic option as a type of pain treatment that would replace marijuana in the pharmaceutical industry.

Causal Rewrite—RowanRat

Communication is Key

Humans not only desire, but require communication. Close your eyes and imagine the following scenario. You have built up anger and you feel it weighing on your chest. Seconds…minutes…hours…days pass by, and your emotions continue to pile up. Until one moment your body can no longer take it and you snap. You let go of all of your bottled up feelings. All of a sudden those emotions leave your body. Did you feel light? Did you sigh of relief? Communicating your feelings results in improved mental health. Because of this, you are able to process and deal with those feelings without being so overwhelmed.

Communication comes in many forms whether it be verbal or nonverbal. Take a look at musicians for example. The songwriter uses nonverbal communication to create the lyrics of their song. By doing so, they’re letting out their emotions and putting it into a musical piece. A singer will use verbal communication by singing. While the audience is listening to a song that may have some deep content, they are listening to the musicians’ work of personal therapy. By creating their music, they were communicating their feelings which improved their mental health in some type of way.

What is mental health? According to mentalhealth.gov, “Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act.” Having good mental health will enable you to perform well in day-to-day life. I conducted an interview with a student at Rowan University who suffers from anxiety and depression. Because of her poor mental health, it affects her academic performance, sleep, and bodily health. Her anxiety causes her to procrastinate and because of this procrastination, her grades suffer. Further, my participant experiences issues regarding sleep. She states, “When I get anxious about grades, if I’m failing or something like that, my brain will just move a thousand miles per minute and it’s just bad…” Her mind is consumed with stress and anxiety about her classes which is keeping her up at night. Sleep is essential to mental and physical health. Due to her poor sleeping habits, she’s developed severe migraines.

My patient has confessed that she doesn’t talk to anybody about her issues. She feels that she is a burden by talking to friends or family members so she deals with it on her own. This is a common reason why people choose not to get help. Using my patient as an example, she experiences a great amount of issues as a result of poor mental health and not communicating it. This interview was more of a therapeutic conversation for my patient. She spoke about a lot of her issues and what has been bothering her. Through this short 30 minute conversation we also put together a list of things she can do to help her deal with her anxiety and depression. She even stated at the end of the interview how it felt good to get it off her chest. This proves how communication is key, and by communicating, it can better one’s mental health. After this interview, she is going to reach out to one of our school’s psychologists and get the help that she needs.

The power of talking is immense when it comes to catharsis. According to Value Options, “Talking leads to a catharsis, which means a feeling of relief. The charged feelings within us become less charged. Nothing has changed that caused the suffering in our lives, but talking has drained off some of the pain and this brings relief.” If somebody is experiencing mental illness, they are already experiencing a great deal of negative emotion. By keeping those feelings inside, those emotions continue to get stronger and create more stress. As stated by Mental Health Research, “Chronic stress increases the risk of developing depression and anxiety in some people.” This can easily be treated through the use of communication.

Further, you can take that communication and share with others. An excellent source is therapy. By going to therapy, you can let out all of your feelings and what has been bothering you. A therapist is there to listen and help you. Without communicating, you are unable to properly process what is going on in your mind. This will cause you to develop mental illness that could be detrimental. Good Therapy states, “Therapy can help improve symptoms of many mental health conditions. In therapy, people also learn to cope with symptoms that may not respond to treatment right away.” By using communication and speaking to a therapist, you are putting yourself on the right track for self improvement. It is essential to understand that you are not alone and you should not be dealing with all of your issues on your own. By letting these feelings remain in your mind, they will eat away at your brain and body and pull you under.

Mental illness is a significant issue in today’s society. At Rowan University, 50% of all students felt severely depressed to the point that it had a negative impact on their ability to function. 15% of students at Rowan met the criteria for major depression. Moreover, 20% of all students have been diagnosed or treated with some form of mental illness. These students need to communicate and talk to somebody. Rowan University offers therapy and counseling, however, it is not well known. I myself suffer from anxiety and depression. I never used to talk to anybody and decided to keep it all inside until I exploded. I spoke with one of our school psychologists and from the first session, I felt instant relief. I also didn’t realize how bad it was until I said it aloud. Once I did, I not only felt the satisfaction of letting it all off my chest, but continuing to communicate with my psychologist enabled me to work on my issues. There is a direct cause and effect of communication on mental health, and it should be enforced for our wellbeing.

What Is Going On Inside of Their Brain?

Have you ever heard a song that made you wonder, what is going on inside that brain of theirs? Is the artist okay? More times than not, they are not okay and are suffering from some sort of mental illness. There is a common link between creativity and mental illness. By examining an artist’s work, a professional is able to notice psychological and developmental processes where they may have not been able to notice in other ways. Being that lyrics are typically written from experience, if there is a noticeable dark theme, there is a good chance that the artist is in fact going through something. Therefore, songs consisting of dark or emotional tones and themes may be a result of mental illness among the musicians creating the lyrics.

Behind The Scenes

There are many ways of noticing that someone is experiencing mental illness other than simply stating the fact. There is a common link between creativity and mental illness. Because of this, songs consisting of dark or emotional tones and themes may be a result of mental illness among the musicians creating the lyrics. Emotion processing is activated through creative activities such as writing, singing, etc… The most common musical genre displaying such themes is rock, and many classic artists including Kurt Cobain and Eminem have diagnosed psychological disorders which are apparent in their music. With that being said, if one is suffering from some sort of mental illness, it will more often than not reflect in their music.

I have an idea of what I want my argument to be, but I’m sure a little assistance to make it better wouldn’t hurt.

My thought:

A single player taking up most of a team’s salary cap does not give the team the best chance to build a successful roster, making it harder to win championships.

Impacts of a Worldwide Pandemic

Being locked down and unable to leave our homes is detrimental to our mental health and potentially the people around us. Over this past year, we have seen increased rates of violence and protests firsthand in America that quarantining, and isolation can have on us humans. It wears us down emotionally and it brings the longing desire for changes that must be made to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. We want someone to blame for taking away our freedoms of interacting with others and going out. The Stages of the Denial of Travel supports the idea that people are angry and tend to lash out their anger onto others.

During this Pandemic, it is evident that enforced isolation or quarantine increases the rate of domestic abuse. A study conducted by Sabrine Sediri and others focused on the effects of how two Tunisian Women delt with being isolated for a period. Domestic violence nearly tripled with women being quarantined and isolated with their abusers. This higher rate of the abuse of women is linked to anxiety, depression, and stress because of the lockdowns and people’s inability to leave their houses. We are tired of being required to stay home and isolate from our friends and family. Constantly feeling angry and anxious is not healthy for our mental health and will contribute to irrational behaviors such as hurting a loved one physically or verbally.

Since Covid-19 came from mainland China; more specifically Wuhan, it is evident that people are becoming Xenophobic towards Asians because of the fear of contracting the disease. We tend to act irrationally in these types of situations and do things that any rational person would not do. This is all part of human nature. According to studies done by Angela R. Gover, Shannon B. Harper, and Lynn Langston, there has been a rise of hate crime towards Asian Americans in the United States. Gover and the other contributors state in their research that social media has been a place where Hate Crime towards Asians has spread and where it is exposed. There has always been some sort of Xenophobia towards Asians historically in the United States, but with the Coronavirus originating in China, that hate and violence towards Asians have increased.  An example of such Xenophobia in the United States that was included in this academic journal was when a someone assaulted a Korean woman in midtown Manhattan on March 10th. This person was pulling on her hair and later punched her in the face yelling: “You’ve got coronavirus, you Asian (****)” and “Where’s your (****) mask. These verbal and physical assaults towards Asian Americans are how people are reacting to being isolated. Violence is their way of lashing out and scapegoating others.

This source also discusses the fact that former President Trump kept calling the virus “the Chinese virus”. Trump provoked Xenophobia towards Chinese and Asian Americans and pointed the blame right to China for creating the virus and allowing it to spread all over the world. Also, Trump blamed China for businesses leaving the United States and then he banned all travel to and from China because of the spread of Covid. President Trump’s claims and actions towards China fuels Xenophobia of Asians. He is painting targets on their backs which allows his supporters to point the blame by any means necessary. No one in this situation knows who to blame. Asians are being scapegoated because an authority of power is saying so. To find satisfaction, we listen to anyone that makes us feel any better about the situation, even if they are right or wrong.

People’s wishes for change are more apparent now than ever before. Just alone in 2020, we have seen riots, social movements, constant protests etc. and all during a worldwide Pandemic which isolated people from each other. This year on January 6th, 2021, pro Trump protesters stormed the capital building in Washington, DC for their hopes to overturn the 2020 election. Something like this has never been seen before in modern US history not since the Civil War. This all connects back to the Coronavirus. Because millions of Americans cannot escape to enjoy themselves and that they are socially distant, they want change. The virus is a “straw the broke the camel’s back” in this situation. Many Trump supporters and Republicans alike were outraged when Donald Trump lost the election. All the anxiety and stress they had to endure that past year pushed many to storm the capital that day. They were tired of sitting idle for so long. Sparking a revolution at the capital was a way to let their feelings all out from months of depression and anger.

Depriving a person of travel and the ability live a normal life has devastating effects on a country’s society. Us as humans are not made to sit idle in our homes for months on end. We thrive on social interactions and by taking away that factor, we are contributing to the increased rates of violence not just towards Asian Americans, but towards our loved ones as well. This as a result is why there is a rise of Xenophobia, revolutions, and hate crimes towards Asians. People use Asian Americans and others in positions of power as scapegoats for their terrible lives because they feel like they caused the problem. The truth is that we are all to blame for this disease that created misery upon the world.
