Sonnet 29

FIOS was screening a movie in which someone playing Shakespeare was talking to someone playing his patron and king. Shakespeare was laying on the praise pretty thick, and the king knew full well we was being lathered up, but they were both enjoying the game.

Shakespeare topped off his praise with some lines that ran:

When, in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes,
I all alone beweep my outcast state,
And trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,
And look upon myself and curse my fate,
Wishing me like to one more rich in hope,
Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,
Desiring this man’s art and that man’s scope,
With what I most enjoy contented least;
Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising,
Haply I think on thee, and then my state,
(Like to the lark at break of day arising
From sullen earth) sings hymns at heaven’s gate;
For thy sweet love remembered such wealth brings
That then I scorn to change my state with kings.

That’s Sonnet 29 he was reciting, one line of which I particularly like and want to use the next time a friend of mine has something I want, like friends to go out with on a weeknight:

Featured like him, like him with friends possessed,

The double “like him, like him” slays me. OK, so maybe I get a little carried away. But, hey, it’s Shakespeare.

Today I wanted to share something with you from that sonnet, and by accident, I ran across this, which is what I’ve decided to share:

It’s going to make Shakespeare a lot easier to memorize. There’s a Rhetoric lesson in there for those who can find it. Enjoy the song. [The last lines slay me now. Thank you, Rufus.]

Long Live Drummers

Of all the ways to extend and increase the quality of one’s life, few would’ve guessed that drumming would help in doing just that. Drummers are typically stereotyped as the wild card or animal of every band- with little help from the muppets. They’re the one that’s in the clouds more than on the ground, and more often than not making questionable and risky life choices. However, compared to other members of a band such as guitar players and vocalists, the drummer is the healthiest of all. Comparable to the likes of cycling and swimming, drumming is a great means of physical exercise. It is also a great mental workout when it comes to coordination, and a perfect social amplifier and medium when it comes to the community of performing music. Assisting in all aspects of health, drumming is a great choice to lead a healthy, long lasting life.

Everyone knows that to be healthy, you must exercise regularly. So it would make sense that being healthy enough to live longer can be attributed to exercise or vigorous physical activity. Through a study performed by the University of Gloucestershire led by S De La Rue and others, drumming- specifically of the rock and pop genres- has been found to have the same physical demands as activities such as “running, cycling, ice and field hockey, and competitive volleyball.” The study took several drummers and gave them a specific beat to play while measuring their heart rates. They found that the peak heart rate of the drummers was around 186bpm, which qualifies drumming as a vigorous physical activity and therefore exercise. “The time spent engaged in vigorous activity is sufficient that there are likely to be long-term health benefits from prolonged participation,” and while the life span of drummers specifically has never been researched, it’s clear that this abundant amount of exercise is only helping their health. Exercise through drumming provides enough METs, which is a measurement of the amount of energy it requires to sit (otherwise known as a metabolic equivalent), to where these individuals that were studied “have a significantly reduced risk of mortality from cardiovascular diseases.” From this study it’s clear as to what the physical benefits of drumming are, but physical health isn’t all that attributes to a long lasting life.

Emotional health is just as important, and being immersed in the musical experience of drumming has been proven to assist in this aspect as well. Of course it’s clear to everyone how drumming can be a form of anger management, however it is also a means of meditation. Drumming presents a way for people struggling emotionally to increase the quality of their mood as well as alleviate anxiety. In her article, “Making Music for Mental Health,” Rosie Perkins describes how the act of drumming requires immense concentration, “which can prevent worrying,” it causes “deep breathing, which can counteract anxiety, social support which can reduce feelings of isolation, learning which keeps the mind active, and regular commitment that motivates people to remain active.” For mental health to flourish, it’s understood that five elements are required to do so; positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, and a sense of accomplishment, and drumming- even the world of music as a whole- satisfies all aspects. The drumming community alone provides immense support and a sensation of belonging, and the act of creating music through rhythmic drumming is perfect training for the mind. This sense of belonging and meaning through creating music is ideal for those who feel as though they don’t have a place or purpose- emotions that can lead to and cause a variety of mental health issues as well as the possibility of taking one’s own life. Of course there’s not a direct correlation stating that drumming prevents suicide, however those who have outlets and a means of dealing with stress ultimately have more positive thoughts and healthier lives.

Mentally, the drums are heavily reliant on coordination and focus, which are a must have for drummers. This vast amount of cognitive refinement that accompanies drumming is perfect for people who suffer from anxiety, depression, ADD, you name it. Focusing and committing to the drums requires a great deal of concentration and commitment as well, which for many aides in alleviating these irritating and sometimes maddening mental disorders. Maria Kopp discusses in her study, “Where Psychology Meets Physiology,” that high amounts of stress as well as mental turmoil, such as a sense of hopelessness, affect the lifespan of those who suffer, even affecting cardiovascular health. With drumming helping to reduce this stress and help mentally, it can act as a medium in reaching an extended life. Patients suffering from depression and other disorders are often introduced to a drum circle, and following the circle one patient said that “I would go away and I had them [rhythms] in my head… the sound we produced was amazing. I focus on a sort of driving, repetitive thing that I just liked,” which provided an escape. It allows the busy and crowded minds of these individuals to fixate on one task, a task that requires so much concentration that the negatives are drowned out- like meditation.

To live a long healthy life, all aspects of health must reach a high level of adequacy- physical, mental, and emotional. Drumming, as a medium, assists in all of these aspects. Having an outlet and activity as mentally demanding as drumming assists in cognitive strength and mental health, and being a part of its community and having a sense of purpose through the instrument provides emotional support. The physical benefits are clear as well, comparable to several high intensive activities. Overall, drumming satisfies all necessary subcategories of health, and can lead to a longer, healthier life.

WHY IS SLEEP NECESSARY

Why is sleep necessary? Sleep is undoubtedly one of the most important requirements for efficient human functioning. It plays a very vital role in ensuring the wellness of the human body, both physically and mentally. Not only does it help you maintain your physical and mental health, it also helps in maintaining a healthy lifestyle along with ensuring safety from a number of fatal diseases. It is usually said that the mood in which you wake up is largely dependent on the type of sleep you have been in. This, in itself, is proof of the importance of sleep in our lives. While sleeping, our body finally gets its share of rest, and it also gets sufficient time to rejuvenate from all the wear and tear that it went through during the entire day. Sleep aids in the proper functioning of the human brain, and its deficiency can cause several different health issues in people. There are several chronic health issues which arise when the human body is not getting its desired rest and sleep. This, in turn, affects the way an individual’s body works and also affects their entire personal as well as professional life cycles.

It has been proposed, by some, that humans do not really need to sleep, and that we do so only out of habit. However, much research would suggest otherwise. It is true that some individuals, such as people who suffer with insomnia etc, are able to live on very small amounts of sleep, but nevertheless, they do need some. Although there is evidence that some can go extensive amounts of time without sleep, studies of sleep deprivation have found that there may be severe consequences of not sleeping at. Randy Gardner, for example, went without sleep for 11 nights. By the end of this period, he suffered severe hallucinations and paranoia. He found interacting with other people difficult and even lost some of his sense of personal identity. Sleep deprivation is one of the biggest factors in children’s behavior. There are a number of reasons for children to get a good night sleep. It is not only important to adults but it is crucial in kids. Physical activity and cognitive thinking do well together when a child gets enough sleep. The effects on a child’s sleeping habits can be profound in a negative or positive way. People show sleepiness in different ways and children have an even bigger spectrum on signs of theirs. It is up to parents, guardians, and teachers to really understand the importance of sleeping habits and the benefits of a child that is well rested.

When you fall asleep your body releases a hormone called, melatonin, that stimulates your body preparing it to fall asleep, giving you the sensation of feeling drowsy. When we get a good night’s rest we usually wake up feeling great and rested. Not receiving proper sleep may make you late to school, forget about important tasks, or even make you feel irritated. Sleep affects our appearance, attitude, as well as our performance on daily activities. Even with children it is most times obvious how to tell when a child is sleepy. In older kids, an appearance and attitude can be good indicators they do not have proper sleeping habits. We can better detect a teen having sleep deprivation. If a teen has dark circles under their eyes, pale face, and becomes agitated over something small we can assume they haven’t had a good night sleep.

Sleep deprivation is serious and without sleep your body won’t function to its full potential. Having a thrown off sleep schedule can really mess up your cognitive functions and can potentially ruin your perception of time. Tips to help sleep would be to make sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive. The one you have been using for years may have exceeded its life expectancy about 9 or 10 years for most good quality mattresses. Have comfortable pillows and make the room attractive and inviting for sleep but also free of allergens that might affect you and objects that might cause you to slip or fall if you have to get up. There are many factors that fall into sleep deprivation. Getting good amounts of sleep can help. There are several benefits of getting a good sleep at night. It helps you maintain your body weight so that you do not become obese and add to this; there’s also the fact that people who sleep well at night often eat less than those who don’t, which also helps with the weight. Getting adequate sleep also increases your productivity by making you feel more energetic and giving you the time you need to rest. It also helps our lives be in a good mood, and good sleep puts a person in a good mood. Sleeping enough also allows our minds to function correctly and in a better way therefore we can think better, and we also have a better memory power upon sleeping enough.

Getting good amounts of sleep is incredibly vital to our mental health and physical well-being. If we do not get enough sleep, we might get burnt out and not be able to carry out our lives in the way that we should be able to. Without the ability to do this, life can become painful and full of difficulties that may become complex over time therefore we must all take the initiative in our own lives to sleep on time and wake up on time to avoid any mental or physical blockages.

Not periodically checking your skin before wrestling is a bad habit for a lot of wrestlers. Skin disease rates skyrocket due to not taking care of your skin after you wrestle. Wrestlers will do whatever they have to do to make sure they take care of their body and check it periodically for the beginning of skin disease for wrestlers. The Skin checks from the Athletic Trainers before any form of competition wether it would be wrestling practice or a wrestling match to reduce wrestlers from getting skin diseases. Providing wrestlers some tips on how to reduce skin disease while wrestling will help other wrestlers not get it. It is pointless that wrestlers who don’t take care of their skin have to hurt others wrestlers ability to compete due to some wrestlers not taking it seriously about trying their best to help reduce skin disease. But the wrestlers’s only concern is trying not to get skin diseases from other wrestlers that are careless about taking care of their skin after and before wrestling. Most wrestlers have a hard time getting through their day sometimes without checking their body for any sign that they may have skin a disease from wrestling. Wrestling skin disease rates will drop if the wrestlers do their part to stop the spread of skin diseases within a group of wrestlers. So make sure to check your skin before and after wrestling practice to reduce getting skin diseases from wrestling.

America Runs on Prescription Drugs

The United States of America heavily relies on prescription drug use. In fact, over 131 million adults take some type of prescription drug, which means that there is a high demand and high profit within the pharmaceutical industry. Opioids are a popular drug that makes pharmacies large sums of money, and even though the damage from the opioid crisis has been catastrophic, some doctors prescribe opioids irresponsibly because they are influenced by opioid manufacturers. The pharmaceutical industry believes that no alternative drug can compete with opioids, so for them, the benefits outweigh the deadly cost. The response from the government about the opioid epidemic has been ineffective, since the crisis has only worsened with the past three decades. With Big Pharma lobbyists within the government, no research is being funded by the government to find a solution. The pharmaceutical industry refuses to consider other types of pain medication and the government’s neglect towards medical research funding caused the opioid crisis.

Opioids are used as pain-relievers, and can be prescribed by doctors for many types of physical ailments. But the United States is facing an opioid epidemic, so the number of opioid prescriptions should be decreasing or at least be heavily discouraged, but that is not the case. In 2017, CNN and Harvard T.H. Chan  released a study titled Physicians’ opioid prescribing patterns linked to patient’s risk of long term drug use where they compared databases that tracked how much pharmaceutical companies paid doctors and the number of prescriptions doctors wrote, which revealed that, “among doctors in the top 25th percentile of opioid prescribers by volume, 72% received payments,” and that “among the very biggest prescribers — those in the top 10th of 1% — 95% received payments.” The article explained how drug manufacturers can pay doctors to consult and provide other services, but doctors cannot accept more payment for prescribing more. The loophole around this law is that opioid manufacturers will have doctors who are frequent prescribers consult with them rather than doctors that don’t prescribe opioids as frequently. The pharmaceutical industry believes that opioids are the most effective pain killer available, and manufacturers do anything to ensure that opioid use never ends. The doctors are just as corrupt in this situation, and are just as responsible as the opioid manufacturers for causing the opioid epidemic.

The government’s handle on the opioid epidemic has done little to help victims of reckless prescribing practices . In an article titled, Are Substance-Use Disorders in the USA a Crime or Crisis? Restorative Justice to Reclaim Voting Rights for Disenfranchised Nonviolent Offenders, writer Tyriesa Howell states that “while many states, cities, and counties are initiating lawsuits against prescription opioid producers for their roles in the opioid epidemic, a federally responsive war on pharmaceutical opioid sales has not been initiated and physicians have only been recommended to reduce overprescribing pain medication through the use of prescription drug monitoring programs.” The government has laws in place that punishes those in possession of illegal drugs and frequently acts on those laws, but legal drug dealers like doctors and opioid manufacturers are not being punished by the federal government. The government’s answer to fighting the opioid epidemic has been to put people in jail, but this does not help them with their addiction, and many people relapse once they are released. The opioid epidemic affects more than the health of opioid users, it affects their family, their job, and their reputation. If the government had supported research to find alternatives instead of criminalizing nonviolent drug users, then less people would be in those illegal situations in the first place.

Even though not every person prescribed an opioid becomes addicted, the increase in opioid use inevitably leads to an increased risk of a person succumbing to an opioid addiction. Harvard T.H. Chan’s study also revealed that, “one out of every 48 people newly prescribed an opioid will become a long term user.” Prescription opioid medications are commonly used by people who suffer from chronic pain. Manufacturers capitalize on this, and make opioid medications very expensive since people need it to function throughout the day without pain. The government only helps those who can be covered by medicaid, and has done very little to help the other thousands of people who cannot afford their medications. If people can no longer afford their medications, they might turn to more dangerous options.

The illegal drug market is equally as large as the United States’ pharmaceutical industry, and both profit off people that become addicted to opioids. People who can no longer afford a pharmaceutical medication often replace their medications with an illegal drug. The sole purpose of opioid use in medicine is to treat pain, and since it has shown to be the most effective in doing so, most illegal drugs won’t satisfy opioid users. Heroin is an opioid that is even stronger than prescription pills, so it is likely that people who can’t afford prescription medication will turn to heroin since it is even more effective than opioid pills. Heroin is the most dangerous type of opioid and is considered to be a Schedule I drug, meaning that it is not used in any type of medication and is considered highly addictive according to the DEA. Now these regular people who simply wanted to find affordable treatment are involving themselves in illegal activities with potentially dangerous drug dealers, putting themselves in more desperate situations. Even if opioid users do not turn to illegal drugs, there are other ways they can obtain the drug that will relieve their pain and cravings. Some people injure themselves enough to where they can be given pain relievers in the emergency room. A disturbing act like that shows how disorienting opioid use can be, and what lengths people will reach to relieve their cravings.

Instead of trying to find an alternative drug, the government continues to allow doctors and pharmacies to distribute drugs to people who could be using alternative pain therapy that has less damaging repercussions. Unfortunately, there is little research being done on possible alternatives. There is currently no drug within the pharmaceutical industry that has enough credibility to be a reliable source of profit, and if the industry cannot profit, then they will certainly have no interest in it.

Heroin addicts committing crimes to support their habits is a huge problem in Vancouver. Crime rates skyrocket due to the addicts’ actions, whether it’s breaking and entering or stealing.  Addicts will do whatever they have to do to get their hands on the drug and there are no limits to where they will go to feed their addiction. The “free heroin for addicts’ ‘ program is doing everything they can to stop the addicts by providing free heroin in the cleanest way possible, but it won’t help to wean these addicts off using heroin. By providing the drug, these addicts will be off the streets, which in turn will prevent them from committing minor street crimes as well as keep the heroin users out of the hospital. It is pointless that the hospitals have to deal with people that want to use bad drugs or unsanitary needles to find themselves being unable to afford hospital bills and hard to cope without the drug. But the program’s only concern is trying to save the city from rising crime rates. Most heroin addicts have a hard time getting through their day to day lives, and activities such as jobs, interactions, and relationships are hard to maintain. Crime rates in the city will dwindle, but the addiction that these people face will continue to haunt them.

The Pressure of the Races

As an athlete, there are different parts of the sport that bring a sense of freedom, while also bringing a sense of stress. In swimming, this is very true. A person is affected by their anxiety from the sport in a negative way or in a positive way or not at all. Athletes that usually have an underlying issue are most likely to have been affected by anxiety the most. One swimmer may take this anxiety and use it as fuel to help them improve in and out of the pool, where others are being crushed by the anxiety. For example, if two swimmers are about to race, one may thrive and turn the pressure into fire, where the other swimmer may let the anxiety win and get in their head. This has happened to many swimmers throughout their career. When looking at anxiety, not everyone will experience it, but at some time we have to look at the different levels of anxiety that are caused by the amount of pressure that swimmers are put under by their academic and training schedule. Some swimmers may have underlying issues that lead them to have higher anxiety than others. There are still a large amount that have a small amount of anxiety when it comes to competing.

Swimming is one of those sports where if you are not confident in yourself, then you will not succeed. Anxiety is something that can take away a swimmer’s confidence and belittle them into thinking that they are not good at swimming. This is not true for all athletes; some are not affected by anxiety and they keep their confidence high. But in most swimmers there is a balance that they have with their confidence and anxiety. When you have a bad race, that is something that can affect your confidence and cause you to question yourself. The negative that forms may slowly start to turn into anxiety for that athlete. Some swimmers can turn their negative anxiety into a positive boost to help create their confidence again.

The study done by the Research Quarterly of Exercise and Sport looks at the relationship between competition anxiety and self-confidence. The study states, “The practical implications of this study emphasize that experiencing anxiety symptoms is not necessarily debilitating to performance. In addition, thoughts and feelings viewed as negative can, under certain conditions, have a facilitative effect on performance.” Through the study, there is evidence that shows that even when a swimmer is faced with anxiety, they can either use it to help themself perform better or it can psych them out of their races. Connecting this to self-confidence, a swimmer with a higher level of self-confidence will correlate to their having better performances. Confidence is one thing that when you have it, it will help you out in the long run.  It will keep your nerves and anxiety at bay when you are racing.

When swimming, there are different levels of anxiety that one might experience with the sport. Some may get “before race jitters”, where they get a rush of nerves that washes all over them. A feeling like this usually only lasts a couple of minutes and once they enter the water it goes away. Some will say it literally washes off of you as you dive in. When a person is getting ready to race, their anxiety is so high that if it makes them nauseous, it is only inevitable that they throw up. Then there are some swimmers that do not experience either of these things. Every swimmer is different from one another. With race jitters that correlate to competition anxiety, an athlete is faced with a challenge that is greater than what they expected it to be. This only comes out when they are racing and once they have finished the race,  the anxiety goes away.

According to Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology, there is a relationship between competition anxiety and the outcome of a swimmer’s performances. The study shows that not all of the anxiety that some of the swimmers faced were negative. Some were able to turn the anxiety into a form of motivation to meet their goals. Grahmans Jones and Sheldon Helton states, “add to the growing body of literature which shows that competitive anxiety is not necessarily debilitative to sports performers.” For some athletes, this means that not all of the anxiety that they are faced with is going to affect their competition in a negative way. With taking the power of the anxiety off of a swimmer, they are able to turn some of it into a positive way of emotion to help benefit they’re swimming. The study itself was written to shed a new light onto anxiety to show that anxiety doesn’t always have to be looked at as a negative effect on a swimmer.

Anxiety is something that can either have a positive or negative on a person. A person has to decide if they want to let the anxiety make their decisions and determine the outcome of their race, or if they should take control and turn the anxiety into fuel to win. At some point, swimmers are going to be faced with some type of anxiety, but it is up to them on what kind it will be. As a whole, people need to stop viewing anxiety as only a bad thing because in the end a person can not be successful if they are not put into a challenge. As a swimmer speaking from my own personal experiences, anxiety has not always affected how races turn out. Over the years, you develop different types of strategies that will help you not let anxiety get the better of you. Without my anxiety, my swimming would not be what it is today. Each swimmer is going to have to find a way to let anxiety affect their performance, but remember that anxiety can also have a positive effect.
