My Hypothesis- Thecommoncase

  1. The legalization of medical marijuana could lower the number of opioid mortality rates and reduce the amount of people prescribed opioids for pain management.
  2. The legalization of medical marijuana could lower the number of innocent lives lost by being an alternative substance to help aid struggling addicts and reduce the need of prescription opioids.
  3. The legalization of medical marijuana could lower the number of innocent people killed by these drugs by being an alternative substance to help aid struggling addicts and could replace prescription opioids in the pharmaceutical industries altogether.
  4. The legalization of medical marijuana in the United States could stop the opioid crisis in its tracks by lowering the number of innocent people killed due to overdose by replacing prescription opioids in the pharmaceutical industry with medical cannabis altogether and using it to aid struggling addicts in a safe environment.

CommonCase, as you know, I am deeply skeptical of and antagonistic toward “legalize marijuana” hypotheses for several good reasons (both of which you acknowledged in our conference), but your case is less common, more specific, more personal, more genuine.

I got the real sense during our conference that you would find this topic (much narrowed, more personalized) energizing, empowering, actually motivating. I want that for you and for all of my students. Not everyone will choose to do so, but for those who can and do, researching and defending a thesis they HAVE A STAKE IN will be the first time my students actually feel the relevance of college work. I’m excited for you that you get to spend a college course pursuing something righteous. I’ll be your enthusiastic partner all the way.

Reset your Hypothesis. Turn your current #6 into a new #1 and get specific. And if you want to substitute human language such as “kill fewer innocent victims” for “lower the number of opioid mortality rates,” that might get you started.

Maintain your objectivity. (That will be hard.) Stay open to finding out you’re wrong. But go straight at the evidence and make it yield whatever truths it contains. Reach out often. I want to be in on this.
